little inconsiderate to the many of us out here who are not Americans and
futhermore really couldn't give one hoot about U.S. politics and elections.

I had the same problem with my Matshita CD ROM originally. After tearing my hair
out for a few days I set everything in my bios to default on my Abit
motherboard. Installed without a hitch. Could be sth to do with PnP but it's
hard to say because I had turned that off and it still didn't work.

I used a Nec cdrom and had no problems. Even though Redhat 6.0 is not
compatable with nec drives. Mandrake may be diffrent. Though I did install
mandrake threw it also. If you are getting a erorr on trying to get the buss
to scan there may be a problem with the ide controler it self. The only way
that I know to test that is to unplug every thing except a hard drive and a
disk drive and use the hd ( manufacture's ) drive utilityes to anlise the
disk. Any Ide buss related porblems would show up.

[newbie] network card config problem

2000-08-12 Per discussione Brian King

I should be getting sth like "eth0 Link encap Ethernet HWaddress 00 60
."when I issue: ifconfig eth0 - but I just get an error about an
unknown device.

However HardDrake acknowledges that i have a configured Realtek 8029 and
I also have Apache installed and can access http://127.0.0.1 with
Netscape. But it looks like sth is wrong if ifconfig can't find eth0.
Are there other tests I can carry out to track this down?

BTW, if anyone else is trying to do what I'm trying to do - make my ADSL
cable connection work - no help for people who don't use Windows from
the ISP - I found a wonderful site at
http://www.roaringpenguin.com/pppoe/ Unfortunately, I can't figure out
if my NIC is working ok and so can't get to the next step.

Any suggestions as to what I'm doing wrong would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Brian

Steve,

Are you using Chinese on Mandrake? I tried briefly by choosing GB Simplified
Chinese in the language setting which converted my menus to code. I then tried
selecting a Chinese font but it didn't do anything. There are some How to use
Chinese on Linux docs around but it looks like it will take a bit of time to
wade through it.

Anybody else using Chinese or other languages on Mandrake?

"Let's face it: getting support for Windows is much easier than
getting
support for Linux. That's because there are a few things militating
against
the development of a useful Linux support network.
The first is that Linux is a derivative of Unix, a true programmer's
paradise. Unix has long been the domain which you enter by walking
beneath
banners that say 'Normal humans need not apply' and 'User-friendliness
is
for wimps'. A lot of this attitude has rolled over into the Linux
community.
It expresses itself in newsgroups where flaming is a matter of course,
anyone who can't phrase a question in hexadecimal is torn to bits, and
medals are awarded for answers couched in the most cryptic terms
possible."

It is easy to get support for Windows. You call the tech support and
wait on hold for hours on end. THEN you get to talk to somebody who
really doesn't care about your problem, and probably don't know how to
solve it anyway. To you tech support people out there, I know, your job
sucks, you don't have to tell me heh heh.

  Aside from that...

My experience with the 2 lists I subscribe to (KDE and Mandrake) people
are more than willing to help. And you get anwsers that are to the
point and correct most of the time. And unlike the Windows support, on
the Linux lists (well, on the KDE list) you can get help from the
  developers themselves.

Another example, a few months ago I was trying to compile and install
Ksnuffle so I could have a nice easy to use sniffer program. When I
went to compile it, gcc 2.95 did what it does best and ate itself on a
change from char * to const char *. I e-mailed the developer and 2
weeks later he gave me a place where I could download the sources that
were fixed for use with gcc 2.95. Somehow I doubt that Microsoft would
  be so helpful... :-)
