Re: [newbie] Fwd: Dual Boot?

I use boot magic as my boot loader. Windows XP must be on the C drive since Boot Magic is a windows application. I just have lilo save to the LINUX partition. Boot Magic locates the windows and LINUX boot loaders. Boot magic is very easy to configure and use.

Re: [newbie] WinGate and Mandrake Linux problem (again, again).

If you still cannot connect after you change your DNS settings try this:

I run Wingate Standard 4.3 with Extended Network Service (ENS). The ENS allows
non-wingate client machines to connect to the network. I dual boot my server and my
workstation. The Linux workstation works seemlessly no matter what service is
running. You do need to ensure ENS is running. Start Gatekeeper, right click on
Extended Networking. Select properties. Then enable Extended Network Driver. Good
Luck!

Re: [newbie] Switching from LM 7.0 to Win2000 Pro

2001-05-04 Per discussione Cyphfer

When your boss decides Windows 2000 is causing more headaches than it is worth. Here
is some advice. Windows 2000 takes over your hard drive. Please ensure you have a
working win95/98 boot diskette somewhere so you can kill the Window 2000 boot loader.

Boot the system from the win95/98 boot diskette. Run the command sys c: without the
quotes...C: assumes the drive Win2000 was loaded on.

Good luck! I have been down this path before. Win2000 has been assigned to the stack
of software I don't use anymore.

My PC can't see the cd either, even though Linux boots up so smooth and

 Failing that,

keep running into is that I cannot get the server to boot from the
Windows install cd. It goes through bios check, spins the cd for a bit,
and then proceeds on with the normal boot. I have even downloaded the 4
install disks and run into a disk I/O error on the first one.

   I talked to Toshiba's support desk (it's a M500 -PIII 500 mHz) and they
said that I need to repartition the disk, then format and install.

Does this mean wiping out the MBR? What should I do?

I know all sorts of good jokes automatically come to mind, but this is
   fairly serious.

I had the same thing happen to me. Thankfully I am only experimenting with Linux. I
had to resort to a fresh install to fix all the problems. Selecting fresh install
will give you the option to format selective partions. Hopefully you have your root

partition(s) that will require a format to accomplish a fresh install.

After the install I had to run sndconfig to get sound running again.

I am relatively happy with 7.2

Hehe. Windoze victim! Most Unix/Linux systems keep their time using Univeral Time or
Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), but Microsoft systems keep their time as local time. When
you set the time in either system, you set the CPU clock to that version of time.
Then when you boot the other system, it interprets what is in the CPU clock
differently and reports a different time.

The fix:

Run timeconf as root

The Configure Timezones dialog box appears. Set your system clock to GMT by selecting
the Hardware Clock Set to GMT option at the top of the screen.

Then Deselect the Hardware Clock Set to GMT option

Close timeconf

Finally reset the time to the proper value using the date command after you reboot.

Good luck!

Re: [newbie] SBLive! and MIDI

2000-11-24 Per discussione Cyphfer

First you might want to check the levels by running xmixer from root.

As a last ditch attempt to get it up, try this command line from root

# modprobe sb io=0x220 dma=1 mpu_io=0x330 irq=5

This loads the SoundBlaster module and all the modules that go with it. If you see a
warning about the sound module already being loaded, you can safely ignore it. If
however, you see an error message about the interrupt number in use the command
cat/proc/interrupts to examine the interrupts being used on your Linux system and
check the documentation for your sound card. Then try the above command again with a
appropriate parameters.

 Subject: [newbie] SBLive! and MIDI

  Hi all:

I'm running the Linux Central Distro of Mandrake 7.2 on a K6II-450. Try
 as I
might, using sndconfig etc, I cannot get the internal(infernal?!) MIDI on
 the
SBLive to work. Finally got system sounds and external MIDI to work, but
 no
joy in Mudville as to internal MIDI. Midi/Karaoke(Japanese for "Tone-deaf
drunk with microphone") player shows external MIDI and four settings for
internal MIDI devices, but the only thing that worrks is external MIDI.
After many tries and much hair-pulling I finally got HardDrake to
 configure
the card and play the test wave, but sndconfig just reports that the
 device
is busy and tries to manually configure, then gives the same report.
Hep! Am I still just expecting more than the system is capable of at
this time? I would really like to ditch Windoze, and this MIDI thing is
 one
of the few stumbling blocks to doing so. Thanks in advance!!

  John Payne

as root run modprobe sb io=0x220 dma=1 mpu_io=0x330 irq=5

if there is an IRQ error run car/proc/interrupt to check where the conflict lies.
Then adjust the values in the command above for new irq

card worked fine there. Used Hard drake, reset the sound
card to the same settings as detected under windblows,

You need to run sndconfig from root. It will set up your WAV and MIDI. I tried the
same stuff you tried...no luck. I am also running an ATI AIW Rage 128, 32 megs...Runs
beautifully.

Give the sndconfig a try. I'm sure you and others will be delighted to here the
penguin Music when KDE starts.

as root, enter the command init 3.

You will need the init command a lot, so I will explain its use:

the init command switched the systems runlevel. The high the runlevel
the more is loaded. level 0 is off, level 1 is single user, level 3 is
text mode, I think level 5 is xwindows.

Re: [newbie] Shut down problem

Try this command from terminal: shutdown -g0 -y

That is -g(zero)

 Hi:
I am having a shut down issue with my machine running Mandrake 7.2. This
is what is happening. After I hit the shut down button, Mandrake begins
a shut down sequence. And the machine actually beeps stating that it's
shutting down but immediately after it shuts down, it auto reboots itself.
This goes on and on. Basically, I cannot shut it down. In order to do
so, I've been having to resort to shutting the box down physically. This
is not good. I've even tried using a term command of init 0 to shut down
but the box keeps doing the auto reboot thing.

Can someone please help me solve this problem? I'm a Linux/Mandrake newbie.
The box on which Mandrake is running on is an E-machines box (X86). Mandrake
is the only OS on it. I have no strange apps running on the box but pure
Mandrake. The only thing I've done is get the box online (aDSL).

 Please help me! Thanks!

Re: [newbie] Optical mouse

2000-11-22 Per discussione Cyphfer

I use a microsoft USB intellimouse explorer. I use it in the USB port. The mouse is
regonized in the BIOS on the TYAN Thunder 100 Dual Pentium II 400 equipped mother
board. Mandrake 7.2 recognized it and set it up as a generic 3 button mouse. It
works, but the wheel function is ignored.

Re: [newbie] Processor question

2000-11-21 Per discussione Cyphfer

Your question should be directed at motherboard support. You never mention what
hardware you have. Will your mother board support a coppermine or katomi? Linux will
not care, but your motherboard may have a problem with it.
