 Solution:

Judging by your email address, your ISP is FreeServe. When I had an

Freeserve is now Wanadoo - or, judging by their service, Wanadon't!
I use the same number for dialup, and queried this with them - they

H, here's the result of a search for 1470 on BeeTee's Web site:
A customer with Permanent Number Withhold on their line can release

person they are calling will be able to see the caller's number on

Heres wanadoo's technical support reply to my email last night,

Dear John,
Thank you for your email.
The 1470 is only needed if your caller identity is witheld - it usually
will not cause any problem whether the number is witheld or not.

Can some kind soul give me clear concise instructions how to set this up.

Not sure of what kppp prints since I don't use it, but V90 and older
modems use the Hayes command set (i.e. AT commands), you can find
explanation for example here:

Much obliged Raffaele, that was what I'm looking for, though I still have
a few lines unexplained, this is what I'm getting after a particular
recurrence like this, kppp logs on and emails download,
then halfway through the process my ISP seems to cut me off,
I doubt if it's your ISP that's cutting you off, it's more than likely
that your modem's timing out.

this causes kppp to redial with this error message,
It's not actually an error message, it's a report generated by the V1
command.

What modem is it?
ATZ

Try either F or F2 instead of F1.
Drop the V1 altogether.
The V1 command isn't designed to be included in an init string, it's
designed to be used after the connection has terminated to generate a
report such as you have below:

NO CARRIER
Question is why no carrier ?
At this point in time, sorry, dunno.
See my suggestions at the end.
Immediately I redial she logs on as usual.
This has now become a pattern.
I don't understand the scale of report in the F's and the numbers,
like Line QUALITY.. 255, is that good bad or indifferent.
Ignore 'em :-)
All my searches in google have come up with no detailed explanation, and
although your suggestion is very helpful it isn't complete, as far as I
can see.
The basic questions I need answering are,
Am I being cut off because my ISP is overloaded and needs to make room
for others,
I wouldn't have thought so.
It's more than likely a modem init/config problem.
Am I being cut off because of line quality or modem config.
Am I being cut off because of software like guarddog(don't think so, but
I'm not sure) etc.
Or what ?
I suspect you have a Rockwell chipped modem, similar to mine.
If so, fire up KPPP, click the Configure button and then click the
Device tab.
Things to look for here are:
Flow control should be set at Hardware(CRTSCTS)
Line termination should be set at CR
Connection speed should be 115200
Modem timeout should be set at 60 seconds or greater.

Now click on the Modem tab.
Wait for dialtone before dialing should be X'd.
Now click on the Modem commands button.
For starters, try ATZ in the Initialisation 1 box.
Leave the Initialisation 2 box empty.
No dialtone detection should be ATX3
Now try it again and see what happens.
Best of luck :-)
Hope this helps.

What do I need to do so as a media change will be detected?

[newbie] LS120/Zip drive woes

2004-01-21 Per discussione Martin Foster
Greetings!

I've recently installed MDK 9.2 and I'm having no end of problems with my
LS120 and my parallel port Zip drive:

I use the LS120 floppy drive as both a 1.44Mb and 120Mb floppy drive and I
do not have a seperate 1.44Mb floppy drive installed.

The Zip drive is connected to LPT1 and my printer is attached to the Zip
drive.

Here's my /etc/fstab file which was created for me during the installation
process:

-- 8 --
/dev/hda1 / ext3 defaults 1 1
none /dev/pts devpts mode=0620 0 0
/dev/hda6 /home ext3 defaults 1 2

none /mnt/floppy supermount dev=/dev/
hdd,fs=ext2:vfat,--,codepage=850,iocharset=iso8859-15,sync,umask=0 0 0
none /mnt/zip supermount dev=/dev/
sda4,fs=ext2:vfat,--,codepage=850,iocharset=iso8859-15,umask=0 0 0
none /proc proc defaults 0 0
/dev/hda5 swap swap defaults 0 0
-- 8 --

If I insert a floppy disk in my LS120 and click on the LS120 icon on my
KDE desktop, Konqeror pops up and the /mnt/floppy directory is completely
empty.

If I insert a Zip disk in my Zip drive and click on the Zip drive icon on
my KDE desktop, Konqeror pops up and the /mnt/zip directory is empty.

The strange thing is, I don't have any problems with my CD-ROM drive.

Any/all help in sorting this out would be very much appreciated.

All the previous Mandrake versions I used had a handful of icons there for
things like 'Home', 'CD Rom' etc in the top left hand corner of the screen.

Also when the KDE loads, the mouse pointer changes to an egg-timer type

The menus and taskbar are available and work OK.

Right clicking somewhere in the middle of the desktop does nothing, whereas
there used to be a context menu appeared for things like desktop

Gnome loads with the icons OK, just nothing for KDE.

Has anybody else experienced this ??

Yes, I experienced this the first time I installed 9.1

In my haste to install it, I overlooked adding a user and so therefore I was
running as root. The solution that worked for me was to create a user and
then login as that user. As you should know, the root desktop is different to
a user desktop :-)

third (and you probably got this right to get the error message),
the form of the mount command is

 mount -t fat /dev/hdd4 /mnt/zip
or
 mount -t msdos /dev/hdc4 /mnt/zip

Fourth, a simpler way to do this is to use DrakConf/linuxconf to
set up the filesystem and let it do the work for the options and
 the mounting.

Just having spent a couple of days installing and configuring Mandrake, I find
that I can access all my drives *except* my internal ATAPI Zip drive. Can
someone please tell me if it's possible to access it and if so, how?

Regards,
Martin

Yes but naturally, I didn't spend the whole of each day doing it :-)

How did you get the other drives to show?

During the installation, I "told" it to start KDE automatically and when KDE
starts, all my DOS logical drives are iconised on the desktop. Neat, eh?

I'm tying to get at the IBM Lotus.

Sorry, can't help there.

Martin
