[newbie] USB 2.0 PCMCIA

2004-04-01 Per discussione Matthew Harrison
Hi all,
I have an STLab PCMCIA USB 2.0 card that I believe is detected by
Mandrake 10. The only problem is that my external hard drive isn't
picked up when I have it plugged into the 2.0 card. If I plug it in to
the 1.1 ports, it detects as /dev/sda1 and mounts to /mnt/windows as I
specified. Is there no support yet for 2.0 or am I missing something
that I should have configured. Thanks.

Nevermind folks. I tried it again and sure enough it popped right up on
the desktop as /mnt/removeable and now it is transfering at superfast
speed. Gotta love Linux! :)

[newbie] Printer Problem

2004-03-22 Per discussione Matthew Harrison
Hi all,
On my 9.2 box, I am trying to print to a network printer. I go
through the MCC and try and set up the printer. When it tries to
configure the printer, it comes back and tells me that it Failed to
Configure the printer. I am at a loss, because I have had this printer
set up before on different MDK machines with no problem, and there
should be no difference in the way I set mine up with the way I set
others up. Any ideas would be welcome.

Thanks,
Matt

[newbie] Power Off

2004-03-18 Per discussione Matthew Harrison
Ok, I recently took my laptop to 100% Linux for the OS, and I do run
Windows, but I run it the way it should be...with the ability to
minimize it when it gets in the way (via Win4Lin). My problem is that
when I tell KDE to power off my computer, it gets through the shutdown
screen and the screen will go black, but the computer won't turn off. I
have to hold the power button down to get it to completely shut off. Is
there possibly a setting that could need tweaking? Oh, I am running 9.2
btw.

[newbie] Modem Ethernet

2002-11-14 Per discussione Matthew Harrison
Hi all,
I was just wondering if it is possible to use both my modem and my
ethernet for internet connectivity. I have a Toshiba Laptop (Satellite
1800-S204) and at work I use the built in ethernet card to get on the
internet via windows, but I want to start using linux. At home I have
dial-up and I have a modem card installed and it is detected and will
connect, but I cannot do anything on the net. I guess the question is can
linux be set up to know to use either/or for the net? Thanks.

[newbie] 8.2 Beta 2

2002-02-11 Per discussione Matthew Harrison

Ok, after a few tries I got Software Manager to work in Beta 1, but in Beta
2, I can update the list of mirrors just fine out of the box, but no matter
what mirror I use, I always get an error telling me it was unable to add
selected mirror. Is there a workaround for this problem yet? I can't even
manually add a source. Thanks for any help that can be provided.

You will need to set this as an ftp site

Source name ftp.ciril (or any name you wish)

 url:
ftp://ftp.ciril.fr/pub/linux/mandrake-devel/cooker/i586/Mandrake/RPMS/

 relative path: synthesis.hdlist.cz

click OK and the source will load.

[newbie] Everybuddy Sound

2002-02-07 Per discussione Matthew Harrison

Hi,
The sounds in everybuddy were playing really crappy for me. When it
would start to play a sound, it would give me a loud beep, then play the .au
file all distorted...so I thought I would try some custom .wav files. They
did the same thing, but...when I play them by opening the wav file from my
home directory, they play just fine. Is this just a bug in everybuddy or
maybe just problems with my soundcard driver. Every other program plays
sounds just fine. My soundcard is a VIA Technologies VT82C686 (Apollo Super
AC97/Audio) as it is listed in HardDrake. Any ideas? Thanks.

first. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

[newbie] Apache and Frontpage

2002-02-04 Per discussione Matthew Harrison

Hi all,
I was wondering if there was any way to get FrontPage 2000 server
extensions on an Apache web server (not sure what version). Also, if there
is a way, I think I remember hearing about a frontpage module for apache, is
there any major security risks besides the fact it is Microsoft? Thanks in
advance.

[newbie] No Sound for CD

2001-08-25 Per discussione Matthew Harrison

Hey Gang,
Slight problem. When I try to play a cd using CD Player, I get no sound
from the cd even though it says its playing. But, I get sound from KDE
themes and whatnot. I have a SoundBlaster Live! Platinum 5.1 running on a
700 Celeron, 392 mb ram, a 20 gig HD running Win2k Pro, and a 15 gig
partitioned into a 10 gig from backup of the win2k part, and 5 gigs for
Linux, Mandrake 8.0 btw. Now the computer is a Blaster PC from
Tigerdirect.com incase anyone is familiar with that PC, and the DVD Drive's
audio cable is hooked into a digital port and I am thinking myself that my
problem lies there. Any help?

2001-04-25 Per discussione Matthew Harrison

Hi All,
I am doing a report on Linux for a final in my college comp class
and I am having a little trouble finding any documentation on the
Kernel. I am mainly looking for any text that would describe the
history of the kernel and also if anyone has any good links the history
of linux and all of the stuff such as GUI's and the distributions that
explains its development since 1991. Thanks in advance for whatever
