[newbie] OFF Topic: Unix TTY Config Question

2002-03-13 Per discussione Paul Kraus

I know this is off topic but most ppl with linux exp have some
unix.(openserver 5.06). Are server runs a distribution package that
prints to both spooled and direct(/dev/ttyx). I am migrating the
information from the old server to a new. How do I configure a tty port
to the correct settings to match my printers? If i use print manager
then everything works like a champ but if I use the tty port then at
about 2 or 3 pages everything gets garbled. I am assuming this is a
handshaking issue. Thanks.

[newbie] Linux Unix Question

How do you know what /dev/device is your tape drive for using tar?

Linux how do you create as script that will issue a command such as
mount that normally only superuser can use? I want to me able to mount
and dismount network resources without having to switch to SU. The mnt
directorys already contain the correct RWX permmissions for my user
account.

Re: [newbie] LILO substitute?

2002-02-23 Per discussione Paul Kraus

You could use a boot disk to boot linux. That way with out the disk
windows loads with the disk linux loads. If you install windows then
linux/lilo you shouldn't have any problems and if you do all you need to
do is boot to a dos floppy and run fdisk mbr. which will erase lilo.

I have installed win4lin and set it for vnet. But when I booted windows
there was no nic info at all. I added merge nic as the driver and set

for io/irq info for the card. I left it at the default setting. When I

[newbie] smbtar vs tar

why use smbtar over tar? I am backuping a folder on one nt machine to a

on my laptop using samba. I then issue the normal tar command and point
to the respective mount points. Is there some kind of benifit to smbtar?
there seems to be a lot less options.

Is there a way to use a linux machine to backup a windows machine to a
tape drive that is on another windows machine? Just curious.

One of the reasons for switching to unix was the control over the os

another spreads the files out to every single directory on your drive.
How you can possibly maintain backups. Its driving me nuts. I can never

white. Is there a way to do this with the console. I
cant use use the built in telnet app. I dont
why because it is defaulted to xterm just like the linux console but the app display screwed up chars and is
unusable with anything other then ascii.

If you shove a windows formatter floppy,. Linux will see it, recognise

On my gatewaysolo5300 I am running a megahtz pcmcia nic. When I install it
finds this device and installs two drives both for the same card. One on eth0
and one on eth1 both are setup for dhcp. Neither work when I first boot. I
have to go into command center and then I have to go to network, connection,
expert. If i try to activate eth0 nothing. it wont work. If i activate eth1
it instantly comes up with no problems. It gets it's ip and all network
resoures are available. Thanks. I had posted this before but have since
gotten more info to add. I am not trying to repeat my self.

have to play secret agent and spend 3 hours d/l rpm after rpm to find out I

If you have rpmdrake installed, then you can automate this process. You
can access it from the Mandrake Control Center. Since both enlightenment
and eterm are on your CDs, rpmdrake will install al the other necessary
 software as well.

That's the confusion. I am running 196 megs on my laptop so I should

Ok now this is confusing.

4.1.3.1. The most simple
Is where you have just two partitions: one for the swap space,
the
other
for the files1.
Tip: The rule of thumb for the swap partition size is to choose
double
of the size of your RAM memory. However for
large memory configurations (512 MB), this rule is not valid,
and
smaller sizes are preferred.

Says to double your ram to create your swap file then it
contradicts
itself. Can someone explain exactly how this should be done and
maybe
some theory behind it? I don't just like knowing how I like to
now
why.
Thanks.

to access. www.cnet.com (and all child sites www.cnet.com/*.* ) and I
want management to be able to access 5 or 6 more sites. Can I do this
with a Linux box between my network and my dsl router? Can I also set it
up to had out ip addresses? There is windows software (surf control)
that does this same thing but it cost around 2 grand and then you have
to have another win2k server setup so all of a sudden my cost for this

pardon my ignorance but isn't asp pages just html pages with a lot of

Edit with whatever--view by installing Apache and using a browser
pointed to

http://127.0.0.1:80/pagename.asp

And put your pages into /var/www/html (you may need to run a terminal as

root once to

chmod g+rw /var/www/html

and add yourself as user to group apache using userdrake or
linuxconf.)

That way, people outside who stumble across your IP can see the pages
but cannot write to them, and of course as long as you do nothing with
index.shtml they won't see anything but the introductory page unless
they know your filenames.

mandrake rpms load icons or put the programs on menus unless they are
designed to run from console. Other rpms may or may not work, but rpm
protects against installing programs conflicting with those already
installed.

With dozens of vendors and thousands of program writers, it is
surprising that most programs do instll and work.

For MS Office files, you can use StarOffice which will handle them
mostly correctly. Some others will as well, like HAncom Office; however

be advised that license agreements generally prohibit reverse
engineering for the purpose of importing data and as soon as UCITA
passes in Washington State, Microsoft will have the full force and
effect of law in those agreements--probably the end of compatibility
forever.

When you find the executable in the directory (and they should generally

install to /opt/(packagename) if they are compliant with the Filesystem
Huerarchical Standard) You can make that directory path and filename
into a command line for the icon you can create by right-clicking on the

desktop. Further, inn the process of that icon creation, you can link
the application to specific mimetypes (like soffice for .doc files).

The basic primers you seek are right on your system if you elected to
install documentation--

 Paul,

When you log into the Unix Box, what is TERM set to? At the
Unix command prompt: echo $TERM, also run stty and see it
that makes a difference. You could try setting TERM to vt102
 or vt220, e.g. TERM=vt102; export TERM.
