[newbie] untarring a backup of windows partition - permission with fat32
I want to backup my boss's fresh install of XP to a gzip (on a mandrake partition) on his dell, then be able to ghost his XP back onto the fat32 partition. I have been experimenting in preparation for this and have gotten some errors that I believe may be related to fat32 not having any permissions system (Cannot utime: Operation not permitted), yet the files are all extracted (apparently) correctly. I know people on the list have suggested using this method before. Could someone provide more explicit instructions for me? TIA Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [newbie] anyone here had success using ltsp with mdk9.1?
I am trying to set up a diskless workstation using ltsp. Last time I tried to install ltsp (and set up dhcp for it), something happened that really messed up my favorite OS. Had to reinstall due to the many things that went wrong after running the installation script. Now I am a little afraid of it. Can anyone give me some pointers? TIA Joe. [snip] Revolt: Somewhere on the Store site there is a way of tracking orders -- I'd try that first. It's possible that DHL lost his DVDs. However, if the order hasn't been shipped, a firm, but polite, e-mail to M. Demoulin might work. Eight weeks is way too long -- hell, 9.1 was released in April. How long does it take to burn the disks? Key point: Is your friend still recommending to his other friends that they buy Mandrake from the store? -- cmg Thanks for the suggestions Carroll. He used his tracking number and it had shipped, but it's progress toward canada seems to have stopped at heathrow shortly after it began it's journey (weeks ago). I guess I should tell him to talk to the shipping company (DHL i presume) ? As for recommending it to friends, I am guessing that he hasn't exactly been praising the virtues of the store lately. [newbie] internet problem
This box (running mdk 9.1) gets IP from other (mdk 8.2) box, this always worked well until I decided to try using this box as a ppp host (tried to configure it from mandrake control center, which installed bind and some other things I think) Now every time I reboot this box I have to go into mandrake control center, start up the internet connection sharing utility, and disable connection sharing. It shuts down servers (which ones I dont' know, but I already removed bind) for me and everything works again. How can I permanently disable these servers? TIA for advice. Joe. [newbie] ppp hosting
I want to be able to have a friend dial-up my box and share my connection. I have no idea where to start, except I am now working on getting my (win)modem working. During startup it wasn't noticed during hardware detection (I will root around in the bios to see if I can fix anything in there) Assuming I am able to get a modem working, what would be the next step? Hope it works well for you, it has for me on the few occassions i wanted to use it. I was never able to follow your instructions using urpmi - I tried : urpmi.addmedia texstar ftp://ftp.bahcesehir.edu.tr/pub/texstar/mandrake/9.1/rpms with hdlist.cz many times and never got it to work. I then tried another suggestion by someone else and the file was available and was downloading for a couple of hours until I gave up - it never finished. That is odd, perhaps my (or your) email program messed up the syntax of that line (extra space in there maybe?) because it worked for me, just seconds before I emailed you. Then I went to the texstar ftp site , downloaded the file in a couple of minutes and clicked on the file and it installed in another couple of minutes - all by itself - Question is why is this not the preferred method of installing new software - ? Am I missing something ? Ralph URPMI is usually preferred because it will find dependencies for you, a process that can be extremely tedious for programs that have many dependencies, unlike this one. To become the root user open a terminal/console window and type: su when prompted give your password for the root user/super user (su) then copy and paste this line into your command line: urpmi.addmedia texstar ftp://ftp.bahcesehir.edu.tr/pub/texstar/mandrake/9.1/rpms with hdlist.cz hit enter... wait till texstar is setup as a source for urpmi then type: urpmi gaim After downloading, you will be told that: the following packages have bad signatures: ...gaim-0.64-1tex.i586.rpm You DO want to continue installation, type y and enter, the signature is only bad because you don't have urpmi set up with the proper gpg signatures for this source. Now assuming that works you should have the updated version of gaim ready to use, including the MSN protocol. HTH, joe I use a program called gaim to chat with people on MSN, it comes with MDK9.1 but i found it easier to install a newer version that had the msn plug-in installed (rather than mess around with the version that comes with mandrake 9.1). make sure you have urpmi set up properly with texstar as a source, this page can help with that: http://plf.zarb.org/~nanardon/urpmiweb.php then (as root) type into a console: urpmi gaim then (using the updated version of gaim you will find under networking/instant messaging in the kde menu) it is pretty fool proof to set up an account and chat with people on MSN (click on accounts, select add, choose msn as protocol, put in a user name and password, and viola!) It's too bad he ditched it already because there is a way to maintain all your old Outlook emails - but it requires installing Netscape or Mozilla on the Windows machine, importing all the email into Netscape or Mozilla, then locating the folder with the imported email, copying that folder to the linux side of life, then using Evo to import from that folder - saves all the emails, attachments - all of it...then you can wipe out Outlook/Windows... Thanks Stephen, this is just the info i was looking for. I think he hasn't wiped the HD yet.
