[nlug] FCC acts to preserve internet freedom and openness

2011-01-21 Thread Russ Crawford

Is the FCC order a good idea for consumers?

Verizon Sues F.C.C. to Overturn Order on Blocking
Web Sites

What happens if Verizon prevails in its appeal?

Comcast and ATT will likely want the same as Verizon.

Is there a way to go around the giant telecoms to avoid blocking altogether?

[nlug] Photo Editing ... Simplified

2011-01-21 Thread Jack Coats
This is to help my wife out, she is looking at using Picnik for online
picture editing.
The problem is we have between no and very low bandwidth available.

We need a downloadable open source, and simple program that will run on XP.

This will be used in a 2 hour class, only 1 really at the computer, and this is
11 to 18 yr olds.

Suggestions? (offline responses are OK)

2011-01-21 Thread Mark J. Bailey
http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/stable.html

Gimp works pretty good under XP

It is not the easiest necessarily to get started with BUT, there are lots
of resources online (youtube included) and it is open source and free (and
runs on linux too). But, it is quite functional. I have done some
photoshop and, while not photoshop, I have managed some pretty
sophisticated things with GIMP. Another *vector* based free drawing tool
(along the lines, I think, of Adobe Illistrator) is Inkscape
(http://inkscape.org/). GIMP, though, is raster graphics and that is what
you need for photo editing.

Re: [nlug] cloud services/comparisons -- Stopping the thread jacking.

2011-01-21 Thread Michael Chaney
The whole reason for Openstack is because of the need for Eucalyptus to
have copyright assignment to them. Further the fact that they can reject
updates based on it conflicting with the corporate sales and inclusion
 of not openly released code.

Any project can reject updates, anyway. Ultimately, you might have to fork it.

BTW, while I didn't download the code to look for the license in it, the
agreement that you have to sign to contribute code back means it is not
really a fully open project. The assignment of copyrights and patents to
the sponsoring corp means they can take the software in their repo private
at anytime they wish. You get free as in beer but not free as in speech.

Not really. In that case, you still have the software as it was up
until the time it was taken private. It's still forkable from that
point.

[nlug] LinuxFest January 22!!!

2011-01-21 Thread Howard White

Hey guys,

Haven't heard any yellow bellied southerners complaining that they can't
travel around Nashville. I am operating on the assumption that we are
still on for the LinuxFest from 1000 until 1600 at Watkins College of
Art, Design and Film on Rosa Parks Blvd. I just did a quick reconn run
from my house into Springfield and found the roads completely fine.
Okay, my one mile road to the main highway still has patches of stuff
that will be ice by morning but everything else was clean. A day of
sunshine, even at 20F, does a lot for clearing roads.

I've got Turnkey Linux systems to discuss and demonstrate as well as
other opportunities (read stuff I gotta figure out).

Chris, please confirm that WCADF is available Saturday as we had planned.

I've got Turnkey Linux systems to discuss and demonstrate as well as other
opportunities (read stuff I gotta figure out).

Chris, please confirm that WCADF is available Saturday as we had planned.

[nlug] Summary: Photo Editing ... Simplified

2011-01-21 Thread Jack Coats
Ok, I have downloaded both Gimp for Windows and Paint.net (with the MS
.NET 3.5 from M$)
and put them on a CD for my wife to test.

I know Gimp, but it has a learning curve for kids that aren't familiar with it.

I appreciate all the feedback! ... Thanks

You clearly have not read the agreements for contributing code to GNU
projects. You are likewise required to sign over your copyright to the
FSF, and the only reason you have to believe that the FSF won't take its
software private is the reputation of each of its board of directors.
There is similarly nothing legally to prevent FSF from doing so.

Could you elaborate what you believe the ISP's real intentions are?

From what I've seen, the heart of the case is Does the FCC have the
authority to make rules for broadband internet?. There seems to be
continued debate over that. The FCC says existing laws give them the
authority, some congress-critters don't believe they do. The whole
issue has made strange bedfellows of all sorts of groups.

The issue of blocking websites... What I believe the FCC is trying to
say is this: Say Comcast decides that ABC or CBS are bad (because
they own NBC and don't like distributing competing material), so
they block or severely cripple traffic to/from their competitors. Or
ATT, or even block specific pages (like how customers sign up for
competing services).

The EFF leaders were split a few years back (haven't checked
recently). The ones against I believe basically believed though we
like the rules, we don't want to cede the argument whether the FCC has
the authority or not, and new people may be appointed who make rules
we don't like, they aren't elected positions, etc.

The problem is we have between no and very low bandwidth available.

We need a downloadable open source, and simple program that will run on XP.

Thanks to all. I have a list and a few downloads I gave to my wife for her
to evaluate.

Sofar she thinks Gimp is to complicated to teach even the basics in under
an hour. So she is going to work on others.

I was in the process of configuring VMware Server when I found that
VMware Server has been declared end-of-line and VMware will drop
support on June 30... I know it works, and I can get it now, and it
sounds like what I need. I'm just not sure I want to learn on
software that won't be available in the future.

It appears VMware's recommended free version is now VMware Player.
From what I've read it has a quite different modus operandi,
capabilities, etc.

The machine I plan to install it on is an Intel Core2 vPro processor
(E8500). Evidently it has VT, but it must have been one of the early
chips with VT (default is off). That opens possibilities I didn't
think I had.

I don't expect to do a lot in Windows, but there are some Windows
programs I just can't completely get away from...

It will be going over the internet, so security is an issue. I can
tunnel through SSH, etc. as needed.

Does anyone have a favorite VM in this situation (Linux host, with
Windows as guest)?
