NPNY: Prince moves out leaves 300k behind
Taken from TMZ.com Only Prince can rent a home for $150,000 a month, leave behind a security deposit -- and the landlord doesn't know who to give it to. According to a lawsuit filed in June, when Prince moved out of the home he rented in Beverly Hills, he left behind a $300,000 security deposit. 3121 Rep Inc., the company that claimed to have brokered the lease for Prince, has sued the owners to get the money back. But the owners say Prince made all the payments himself -- 3121 was just an intermediary -- so the money should go straight to him. Now the two sides are suing each other, with Prince caught in the middle -- 3121 wants the money they says is theirs, the owners just want their attorney's fees paid. Meanwhile, Prince is probably sitting somewhere composing ballads, with no idea any of this is going on. http://www.tmz.com/2009/08/10/prince-moves-out-leaves-300k-behind/ - NewPowerNewYork Mailing List website: Www.NPNY.Org - Unsubscribe? NPNY: FW: Prince Concert Review c/o Variety Online
Prince (LA Live: Nokia Theater 7,100 seats; The Conga Room 1,000 capacity; Club Nokia 2,300 capacity; $77 per show) Presented by AEG Live and Goldenvoice. Reviewed March 28, 2009 Bands: NT: Joshua Dunham, C.C. Dunham, Morris Hayes, Shelby J., Liv Warfield, Elisa Fiorello; CR: Michael Bland, Sonny T.; CN: Renato Neto, John Blackwell, Rhonda Smith. Guests: NT: Sheila E; CN: Chaka Khan. By STEVEN MIRKIN http://www.variety.com/index.asp?layout=biopeopleID=1530 If energy and ambition were the only criteria used to judge concerts, Prince's run of shows Saturday at the L.A. Live entertainment complex would have been an unqualified success. The three consecutive shows (at the 7,100-seat Nokia Theater, the 1,000-capacity Conga Room and the 2,300- capacity Club Nokia, respectively), each featuring a different band and wildly divergent moods, offered five hours of music over an eight-hour period -- an undertaking impressive in scope, an attempt to make good on Prince's boast late in the first show that I am music. But bedeviled by sound problems, logistical hiccups that kept fans waiting in interminable lines (the Club Nokia show started while the aud was still filing in) and snowballing delays that pushed the final show until 1 a.m. (an hour after the announced starting time), the evening ended up as mixed bag. The event mirrored the tripartite nature of Prince's latest release, a three-CD set released on his NPG label, and available since Tuesday on his Lotusflow3r.com website and on-sale Sunday at Target stores (which were incessantly hyped on the video screens prior to the Nokia Theater show). The shows could be seen as roughly analogous to the three CDs: the lean, hit-heavy grooves of the Nokia Theater to the retro-Prince funk of MPLSoUND, the Hendrix-inspired power trio at the Conga Room to the guitar-rocking Lotusflow3r, and the leaden fusion and bedroom ballads performed at Club Nokia to the uninspired seductions of Elixer (credited to Bria Valente, Prince's latest breathy-voiced female protege). But the shows also turned progressively more self-indulgent, so much so that if a fourth show were scheduled, it might have featured Prince showing slides from the family's trip to Mt. Rushmore, accompanied by a ukulele solo. The Nokia Theater set was Prince's roadshow: a standard performance, a default run-though of hits with a few covers tossed in for good measure. Backed by a four-piece band (and three backing singers) that included a sinewy rhythm section and a bluesy harmonica flitting in and out of the grooves, and lots of room for guitar solos, he opened the show with Old Skool Company. One of the highlights from MLPSoUND, it's a lanky groove that posits music as a balm against hard times. And the rest of the 90-minute set tried to set a party mood: 1999, Kiss, If I Was Your Girlfriend, covers of Tommy James and the Shondell's Crimson and Clover (with a bit of the Troggs' Wild Thing tossed in), Wild Cherry's Play That Funky Music (with the vocal handled by a member of the aud), Kool and the Gang's Hollywood Swinging and the Beatles Come Together. But, in what would prove to be the evening's recurring theme, the sound was terrible. The vocals were distorted and staticky, like an old album played by a dusty stylus, his guitar kept feeding back and the drums lacked punch. Prince, who looked to be in a good mood, proved his mettle as an entertainer, gamely playing through the glitches. But about a half-hour in, he demanded the monitors cut, which dissipated what little energy the show had built up, and Prince was forced to fall back on his old school RB moves: leading the aud in call and response vocals, demanding hands to clap and bodies to sway, and repeating Hollywood for an easy cheer. Not even a surprise appearance by Sheila E for Glamorous Life could raise the show out of the ordinary. Matters improved markedly for the Conga Room show. Playing to the smallest aud of the evening, he opted to front a Band of Gypsys-inspired power trio. Backed by longtime friends Sonny T. on bass and the enormous, volcanic Michael Bland on drums, Prince played an ecstatically powerful, hourlong set of funk-inflected classic rock and blues, running through a rocking All Shook Up, a greasy With A Little Help From My Friends, a flinty When You Were Mine and two of Lotusflow3r's more political songs, Colonized Mind and Dreamer. He soloed extensively, playing with a chunky, overdriven tone that recalled Hendrix (an influence he acknowledged with a cover of Spanish Castle Magic). It was the kind of set you could imagine the young Prince playing at some dingy roadhouse 30 years ago, and the musicians played with the kind the relaxed familiarity that only comes with time (that familiarity may also have helped them to play through the problems with the stage sound). It might have been indulgent, but the music was played with such joy and warmth, it transcended it. That, unfortunately, was not to be the case at Club Nokia.

It's marketing also. Who would buy an unknown artist without first hearing at least a couple of tunes on the radio or online somewhere and maybe on a talk show or video? This way at least the fan base buys her album and get 2 Prince cd's with it. I think Tamars Milk and Honey album could've done respectable numbers on its own. NPNY: FW: [TheFloridaNPG] Fwd: HOUSEQUAKE CLOSING INFO UPDATE
Taken from TheFloridaNPG Thanks Judy for the update... From Gav A housequake moderator Firstly, the simple reason that nothing's been said is that as many of you know, I look after the Prince liaison and legal statements for Housequake and I've been snowed under with my day job - in fact I only found out HQ was closed by email from one of the other mods this morning. As some have noticed, relations with official sources have been very good of late, however mostly because we've been playing the game and trying our best to not offend P. An example of this is how we've had a header that doesn't even mention Prince's name nor shows his photo. A couple of weeks ago, one member put together some excellent lotusflower inspired banners that used a symbol that looked a bit like Prince's but with a flower modification. As they didn't infringe copyright, we took the decision to put these live, along with the official banners we were supplied directly by P. Roughly 24 hours later, we got a very blunt email saying this must be removed from one of his team. We tried to discuss this explaining that it's very difficult to have a fan website that doesn't have a picture of Prince or even show his symbol, however P was adamant that we don't imply official status. As someone else noticed on this thread, this was quite frankly the straw that broke the camels back and Aaron came to the belief that this really isn't a fun thing to do any more. Please remember that this is just a hobby for Aaron. It costs him money to run (we can't take donations any more as it changes our legal status and this was used by Prince's legal representation to claim we were a commercial organisation - nice huh ?) and take up a great deal of his time. Would you spend time and money on something you didn't enjoy ? Is HQ over ? I personally don't know but I've spent a great deal of time playing united nations to repair relationships between Prince and all the PFU members (I brokered the ceasefire between the PFU and Prince) so I'm not about to give up yet. It Ain't Over ! ps - thanks for the notes of support for HQ. This isn't about Prince.org vs Housequake, this is purely about fans rights to support an artist in a reasonable manner. - Peace Love and Music, judy [demime 1.01d removed an attachment of type application/x-pkcs7-signature which had a name of smime.p7s] - NewPowerNewYork Mailing List website: Www.NPNY.Org - Unsubscribe? NPNY: JUST WONDER-FUL
multipart/alternative Sender: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Precedence: bulk Reply-To: npny@lists.panix.com From The New York Post November 19, 2007 -- STEVIE Wonder felt the heat of the spot light on his face. He heard the riotous standing ovation before he even sang a note - he seemed to taste the love. At Saturday's sold-out Madison Square Garden gig, his first proper concert here in 11 years, Wonder beamed an ear-to-ear smile at his fans and said New York, just like I pictured it - half wisecrack, half truth. As for the audience's expectations, this 57-year-old soul survivor lived up to his rep as a musical showman with a performance that signed, sealed and delivered goodness with a set that reached from 1969's My Cherie Amour to the present. What was wonderful about this show was that, despite the concert's most memorable moments coming when Stevie dusted off one of his many No. 1 hits, it wasn't a golden oldie nostalgia show. The iconic singer laid down an awe-inspiring performance, where his vocals were youthful, his arrangements were big enough to fill the Garden and he used his celebrity to draw stars like Prince and Tony Bennett out of their seats to duet with him. Hearing Stevie do For Once in My Life is a thrill - with Mr. Bennett, the piece was inspired. When the pair traded the closing lines: For once, I can say, this is mine, you can't take it, as long as I know I have love, I can make it, For once in my life, I have someone who needs me, it was hard to shake the shivers. For the fan whose favorite Stevie song is Superstition, it couldn't have gotten any better than when Wonder said: Prince? I understand Prince is here. Prince, you can jam with us if you want. His Purpleness high-heeled his way onto stage in wraparound shades and a high collar-jacket, grabbed the first electric six-string in reach (a very non-Prince slime green Stratocaster) and joined the band for a walloping extended cover, complete with an ax solo that would have excited Darling Nikki. While this show ranked high on the concert meter, Wonder spent too much time trying to get audience participation going in the tune Ribbon in the Sky. When an artist has a songbook as outstanding as his, you don't need a concert segment where he rehearses the audience for a sing-along that sounded as off-key and out of time as you'd expect. No doubt there were some inspired by the concert's introductory monologue, where Wonder had a moment of silence for 9/11 victims; spoke about being paralyzed with grief after the death of his mom; offered Kanye West (who just lost his own mother) a shoulder to cry on; and ultimately revealed this show happened because he got a motherly nag from the other side telling him: Get your ass outta bed and back onstage. Heartfelt patter, but it was still an ass-backwards way to begin what would be a rollicking show. Otherwise, there were few transgressions. It was a generous 2½ hours long, Wonder's voice was steady, warm and jazzy and the set was excellent. The top songs included Higher Ground, Living for the City, I Wish and Master Blaster. The exclusion of the loved but insipid I Just Called to Say I Love You, even showed wisdom just might come with age. In the end, when you closed your eyes and listened, it was just the way you'd picture a Stevie Wonder concert. - NewPowerNewYork Mailing List website: Www.NPNY.Org - Unsubscribe? Princes 'response' song seems to have its desired effect. Blind the fans into thinking it's a funky song (can't deny it is) and lose interest in PFU. Don't get duped into thinking its anything but a ploy. He'll probably offer it for download for a fee and sue you for having it on your website if you stream it. RE: NPNY: Planet Earth Anyone Buy It?
I don't think he is trying to make hits, we have been conditioned by the industry to think that older artist with new music are trying to make hits. True in some cases but not for Prince. It only takes 2 brain cells to have a hit (example: this is why I'm hot, beautiful girls/suicidal) I think that Prince is missing a muse, someone or something to inspire him or spark him creatively. But we all know he has it in him to do better, or even dust off some of the jams out of his vault that haven't been released or bootlegged. Shoot, even do a whole cover album, I love to hear his interpretations of EWF's I Write A Song For You or Stevies Superstition. For those of us who were alive when Prince started, we're all around the age where this division of opinion is a good thing. It's just like how there are still people who go to every Rolling Stones and KISS show, knowing that the best days of those bands have long since passed. They're going to relive the good old days. The difference with Prince, I think, is that we all KNOW that he can do better, and there's the question of all this genius unreleased stuff he has just sitting around. Do any of you who say you like this album believe he can't do any better? This is a dude who sold hundreds of thousands of copies of Lovesexy, a one track album. I think Lovesexy has more musical depth than Planet Earth, and if the only reason why is because he's older now, then perhaps he's done. I personally hope not, because there isn't exactly any one else out here challenging the musical (and corporate) status quo like him. On the average, it looks like everyone has 3 or 4 songs that they like from this album. Compared to entire ALBUMS we've liked from him in the past. I think that says something about an artist of Prince's caliber. And what I think it says is that he's trying to make hits, which is a bad move. The 48-year-old, known for hits such as Kiss and Raspberry Beret, has prepared 150 songs to perform on the tour. And he hopes to be joined on stage by soul singer Amy Winehouse, having declared himself a big fan. I love London, he explained at a press launch. I've had some of my favourite shows here. An extended stay had been arranged because during his last tour in London - in October 2002 - a lot of people didn't get to see me. Prince - who famously changed his name to a squiggle symbol in the 1990s after falling out with his record label - added that he would be house-hunting in the British capital. NPNY: Prince halftime news conference
From Philadelphia Daily News: Best Super Bowl halftime advanced news conference ever yesterday. Usually a bleary eyed performer sits and thanks sponsors and such. But Prince, who will headline the Super Bowl XLI extravaganza, apparently did not want to talk. So he sang and played instead. After some yada yada from Pepsi officials, Prince and his entire band , including backup singers, took the stage for three songs. Prince faked out reporters, walking to the mike and saying that contrary to rumor, he was going to answer questions. Then, when somebody tried to ask one, he launched into Johnny B Goode. That was followed by Anotherloverholenyohead and Get On The Boat. It was an unusual scene. Usually, reported don't stand up and dance at news conferences, unless of course, Andy Reid is laying down the groove. -Damon Moderator: I got to see a clip of of that off of hq. We spent a lot of time talking about music, says Miller. We went for iconic music, from having to differentiate between the penguins by giving each one a song specific to themselves. Who's more iconic than Elvis, for example, or Prince? In fact, Miller scored a bit of a coup with the artist formerly known as 'The Artist Formerly Known As ...' The songs Sign Of The Times and Kiss both had their lyrics rewritten, with rare permission by the artist. Prince never changes the lyrics to his songs, and Gary LeMel (from Warner Music) said 'If he ever saw the movie, he'd see it was appropriate.' They went to Minneapolis, showed him the movie, and apparently he picked up his guitar, started strumming and said 'Give me two weeks.' And he not only let us change the lyrics, but he gave us this beautiful song, The Song Of The Heart, for the end. But, this is a good way to weed out the ones who were just there for the joy ride. Even when the club was $100 a year, you knew only the hardcore fans would be crazy enough to join and keep the club alive. Sometimes you just need to clean house and start over. However when Prince cleans house, he REALLY CLEANS, even if he is throwing out the good with the bad. Not like we haven't been here before and we won't go there again. And Again, And Again... Basically he can offer space for advertisements to offset the cost of some things while providing a more substantial content to keep people coming back in. and maybe a monthly fee like 9.99 a month for membership. And for gods sake offer some of the music he has in his vault that hasn't been released at all for downloads. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, July 05, 2006 11:06 AM To: npny@lists.panix.com Subject: Re: NPNY: Happy 4th? - Re: Music Club Hiatus Even I, a person with pretty much no entreprenurial sense whatsoever, knew that the $25 membership was a bad long-term business move.
