Hi, Just a quick note on logo design: The ConTeXt logo could just as well be a set of tulips or some (TeX-styled) lion or a dutch cow or a windmill or some variation off the Pragma-ADE logo (see pragma-ade.com). There is no real need to display the letters “context”. In fact, having a pictograph instead of / along with textual content is probably a good idea. For use in actual text we already have \CONTEXT. Re: [NTG-context] New logo proposal
Hi, While this discussion is going on, it is still the case that Paul’s new unofficial logo is better than the old green one, so I did in fact replace the wiki logo. It will stay up until someone comes up with a proposal with a higher level of consensus. Thanks Paul! Taco PS I tried replacing the favicon as well, but the image does not want to scale down that much, so the favicon is still Patrick’s tulips. > On 30 Jan 2019, at 10:15, Floris van Manen wrote: > > If TeX and Context are about typesetting beautiful readable typography, > the logos as presented do not reflect that thought per se. > At first glance is is a pile of incoherent letters and colours. > e.g. difficult to read and memorise. ___ If your question is of interest to others as well, please add an entry to the Wiki! maillist : ntg-context@ntg.nl / http://www.ntg.nl/mailman/listinfo/ntg-context webpage : http://www.pragma-ade.nl / http://context.aanhet.net archive : https://bitbucket.org/phg/context-mirror/commits/ wiki : http://contextgarden.net ___

[NTG-context] New logo proposal
Hello, thanks for your feedback. Again, I don't want to impose or dismiss anything. I wanted to share this because I believed somebody else in the ConTeXt community could be interested. @Taco: Actually, I stumbled upon the nice ConTeXt group logo recently and was wondering who made it. To answer your questions: I tried to avoid any logic or rainbow-type color sequence to create something more unique. The first square had to be in blue and the middle area in a warm color. (I played around a lot with the color combinations.) Regarding the outside circle: I tried different variations, with and without a surrounding circle or round background, with and without rounded squares, and was most pleased with this solution. It's true, "clean and simple" can easily lead to "too informal". @Clyde J: Valid point. I use the logotype with the subscript 'E' whenever I can in inline text. @Floris vM: Font, spacing, overall appealingness. No Helvetica/Nimbus Sans, which has less meaning to me for ConTeXt than a DIN-ish/technical one. Colors are fun. If you don't see it this way, it's perfectly fine. @Alan B: I've uploaded MetaPost files of the main version. Yes, the horizontal version is not very exciting nor very TeX-aware. I made this one primarily because I wanted something small for a little GUI script. Now I think it's just superfluous. Greetings! I tend to define RGB colors in my print documents so that the colors of the included SVG files match the defined colors I use elsewhere in the document. Eg. the Corporate-Blue of the Logo (SVG) will match the Blue of the headlines. I could as well define CMYK colors in the document but then I have two different color models in one document and I fear that the colors are printed in different hues. What would you do? rgb for screen and cmyk for print You can use rgb and in the print version enable cmyk and disable rgb in which case context will convert for you. For most color setups the result is ok (the end users often don't know what colors were meant anyway) as long as relative coloring is ok (the wierder the colors, the more sensitive for colro spaces). Hi juh, you can define colors in several color models at once; CMYK makes most sense for professional printing. e.g. \definecolor[CompanyBlue][r=0,g=0,b=1,c=1,m=1,y=0,k=0] and see https://wiki.contextgarden.net/Command/setupcolors (I would activate rgb or cmyk colors via modes, if you produce different media) CMYK colors in SVG are difficult (I needed them in 2005, nowadays there’s a hardly supported standard for icc profile based colors). e.g. https://stackoverflow.com/questions/3405689/svg-image-with-cmyk-colours-is-it-possible https://www.w3.org/TR/SVGColor12/#icc-colors Something about color profile handling in ConTeXt: https://wiki.contextgarden.net/PDFX Now you must decide if you want to go the PDF/X-1a route (device dependent CYMK values) or PDF/X-3 (profiled colors). Luckily I never had to match corporate colors of different models in ConTeXt... [NTG-context] Which color model shall I use
Hi, I would like to know, how to define colors to have a good printing quality. I am currently producing print materials for a company where all colors were defined for online usage first, so we started with defining RGB colors and then derived CMYK colors. What is the best approach for defining colors in print materials? What color model shall I use? RGB or CMYK? For the background. We have some SVG graphics we use on the website. They are defined in RGB color model. And we use them in the print materials as well. Re: [NTG-context] ConTeXt ignores crop in some pdf graphics
Hello Pablo, thank you for digging up all of that. What I found out today is that while a graphic outputted from an old Corel (output e.g. pdf 1.3) has all that extra whitespace, a graphic outputted from my newish Corel 2017 (pdf 1.7) seems to have a working cropbox as does the old graphic recropped with Acrobat as Hraban's Save As trick). I've included an old graphic (fm.pdf), the same outputted today (fm_corel_2017) and the old one after recropping it (I reset old cropbox and cropped again) (fm_cropped), if somebody feels like investigating further. While the cropbox problem meant that I had to spend a few hours today fixing problematic graphics in my big old file, the fact that output from my current Corel works means that any future graphics will be fine and I don't have to change my workflows. This reduces the problem into the level of minor annoyance, assuming it can't be fixed. Hi Pablo, Hans investigated and could trace my problem to an Acrobat bug (or at least it doesn't adhere to the PDF specs): I had my logo exported from Illustrator and changed the boxes in Acrobat Pro 9, then saved. But if you don't "save as", Acrobat creates a XForm inside a page, but doesn't set the boxes correctly for the page (CropBox missing, Artbox was what I needed). While all(?) viewers work around this, ConTeXt's new PDF handler, the ppl library, adheres strictly to the PDF specs and falls back to MediaBox if CropBox is missing. I tried size=artbox and box=artbox, but size=art actually does what I need - thanks for the hint! You have to use the correct margin width, i.e. \rightmarginwidth in the right margin and vice versa in the left margin. You should also scale the margins to fit in the backspace/cutspace because by default they don't and run off the paper. \showframe \useMPlibrary[dum] \setuplayout [height=middle, width=middle, backspace=2cm, topspace=10mm, bottomspace=10mm, header=10mm, footer=10mm, footerdistance=10mm, headerdistance=10mm, leftmargin=\dimexpr\layoutparameter{backspace}-\layoutparameter{leftmargindistance}\relax, cutspace=\dimexpr\layoutparameter{rightmargin}+\layoutparameter{rightmargindistance}\relax] \setupfooter[margin][strut=no] \setupfootertexts [margin] [] [{\externalfigure[dummy][width=\rightmarginwidth,height=\footerheight]}] [] [{\externalfigure[dummy][width=\leftmarginwidth,height=\footerheight]}] \starttext \dorecurse{10}{\page[dummy]} \stoptext On 14/08/18 22:50, Fabrice Couvreur wrote: Hi Henri, Thank you for your suggestion. Thank you Thomas and Wolfgang, About startletter / starttext: the contents of my test file reflect a moment. I have made numerous tests with and without starttext/stoptext. The state of the test file is one in an endless row of tests. I am not without total experience in programing. I more or less understand program scripts when they are not too complicated and I like tweaking them, yet I cannot think up a new program from scratch. But anyway, I will go ahead with your suggestions! Thank you very much again! OK, I see your desperation, and I take your analogy (I’m a scholar myself, not a programmer): if someone came to you with the Iliad and explained that he doesn’t know a word of Kazakh but wants all of Homer’s poem, every line, every word, every nuance, expressed in Kazakh with the help of a grammar and a dictionary, you’d reply that this is not how learning languages works. You begin with simple sentences and work your way up. You have shown us several times examples that don’t work, and I have expressed my suspicion that this may be due to using the correspondence module. You weren’t sure whether you need it or not; which is something only you can know. What does this module offer that can’t be accomplished otherwise? If you look at the documentation of the module, you see that the \startletter … \stopletter pair starts an environment within a \starttext … \stoptext context document. When you look at your setup, you will see that you have a \startletter … \stopletter, then a few setups, and then a \starttext … \stoptext document. I’m not a programmer, but I see that this will not work. So for some simple rules: when you process an xml buffer (or document), you define xmlsetups for the different xml elements. When you write \xmlprocessbuffer, that’s when these elements will be processed - which means: that’s when your document will be built. You can’t go through your xml buffer/document and then add further text (well you can, but that’s more complicated), so what you have to do is add your text (for the sake of this example: \input knuth) WITHING THESE SETUPS. So let’s start with a simple document that will work: \startbuffer[participants] Hendriks Karel mr. K. Arnhem Mr. K. Hendriks Grotestraat 5 1234 BB Arnhem 1234bb5 Janssen Piet P. mr. Nijmegen Mr. P. Janssen Kortestraat 8 1234 AA Nijmegen 1234aa8 \stopbuffer \startxmlsetups xml:setups \xmlsetsetup{#1}{contacts|contact|formalname|informalname|prefix|initials|address|city|text|kix|p}{xml:*} \stopxmlsetups \xmlregistersetup{xml:setups} \startxmlsetups xml:contacts \xmlflush{#1} \stopxmlsetups \startxmlsetups xml:p \xmlflush{#1}\par \stopxmlsetups \startxmlsetups xml:contact \xmltext{#1}{/address} \blank [3*line] Subject: your life in \xmltext{#1}{/city} \blank [2*line] Dear \xmltext{#1}{/prefix} \xmltext{#1}{/formalname}, \blank [line] \input knuth \relax Kind regards \blank [line] X \page \stopxmlsetups \setuppagenumbering [state=stop] \starttext \xmlprocessbuffer{main}{participants}{} \stoptext So you see what I’m doing here: I process every simple element, and I add all the stuff that will go into the letter for every single contact. Start with this document and then find out what you need in addition: a logo, some fancy lines across the letters, a special placement for the address and the subject, etc.? I’m guessing that it would be easier to do this with simple setup commands rather than using the correspondence module, but we have no idea what you need to accomplish. Once you find out what’s missing, you can modify the example and ask additional questions. But, to take your analogy: don’t start with irregular verbs and special cases that will complicate the picture. How is this line \setuplanguage[nl][date={year, –, mm, –, dd}] % ISO 8601 date from your original example relevant to your problem? And again: please don’t give me the “I’m not a programmer” response; I’m not a programmer either, but I know that you have to reduce the complexity in problems to find a solution. You’re adding extra complexity. The way I describe above is the easiest path. There are other approaches, of course: you can combine elements from several xml documents, or you can process the xml data with Lua. All of this may be unnecessary in your case, but nobody will be able to help unless we understand what you need. And to explain this, you will have to start with simple examples, not with a complex document. Sorry for being somewhat stern, but I’m sure you would give similar advice to your students… All best Thomas _

You can see a scaled- down version of the final result on the meeting website: http://meeting.contextgarden.net/ == Excursion == An excursion day in Mainz is planned for Friday the 15th, including a guided tour and workshop at the Gutenberg Museum. == Registration discounts == Besides general sponsorship, DANTE e.V. also offer an extra discount for any Dante members that will attend our meeting. And that is on top of the discount we offer to our ConTeXt Group members, so we managed to keep the conference fees quite low. The deadline for early-bird discount is July 11, only six days from now! == Registration == The meeting will host ConTeXt and LuaTeX developers and users and gives you the opportunity to present your results, experiences and ideas on future development. The presentations will be accompanied by tutorials on different ConTeXt and LuaTeX techniques. Registration is now open. Re: [NTG-context] Interlining in a TwoColumns set
Hi Pablo, Many thanks to be patient. I apologize to be a little bit slow minded : I presume that the \setupexternalfigure[location=default] command would say that the figure is in the same directory than ConTeXt documents (i.e. 'default'). I have requested an external figure in *.svg format (Logo.svg), but the print on the top right shows only these informations : name : Logo.svg file : Logo.svg state : unknown By the way, even if my images are loaded in a ConTeXt subdirectory (as context\ConTeXt-Documents\Images), in place of default directory, the parsing doesn't load the image. [NTG-context] Wiki maintenance
Hi all, Today I copied the ConTeXt wiki to a new server, in preparation for the decommissioning the current old server, which should happen within a week or so. I’ve disabled wiki page editing at the old location for now, while we wait for everybody’s DNS entries to catch up. You will know that you are accessing the new location because: * you can edit pages again :) * there is a “powered by Semantic MediaWiki” logo at the bottom of the page. If there is a problem at the new location, please warn me. I’ve tried to install all the prerequisites on the new server, but chances are I missed something. Best wishes, Taco ___ If your question is of interest to others as well, please add an entry to the Wiki! maillist : ntg-context@ntg.nl / http://www.ntg.nl/mailman/listinfo/ntg-context webpage : http://www.pragma-ade.nl / http://tex.aanhet.net archive : http://foundry.supelec.fr/projects/contextrev/ wiki : http://contextgarden.net ___

Wolfgang, Your solution seems to work perfectly: I get exactly what I want (I only have to remove frames around cells). I don't understand the possible problems: are you saying that if I use xtables in the body of the document (other than in the header), and those tables split across pages it could give unexpected behaviours? What if I don't use xtables in the body, but other tabular environments that allow splitting, such as TABLE or Linetable (I'm reading from the wiki, I never used that)? Thank you very much! and directory hierarchy. Make reference to section 2.4, or eliminate the somewhat duplicate discussion about searching for files altogether. What would componentonderdeel translate to in English? Introduce Table 2.1 (including the meaning of the stars and parenthetical stars) prior to the table itself. Otherwise people will see the table and need to read the subsequent page, then flip back to understand the table again. The product teacher.tex (a teacher manual) can be defined as shown on the opposite site. What does opposite site mean? In most cases working with only \starttext and \stoptext in combination with \input or \enviroment is sufficient. Sufficient for what? A project structure has advantages when you have to manage a great number of texts. Any project structure, or *this* project structure in particular? it also enables you to process components independently rewrite as: it also enables components to be processed independently. In principal is a mistake; use: In principle. Figures 2.1, 2.2, and 2.3: enlarge the rectangles to avoid hyphenated words. Provide an example of localenvironment -- it is unclear how the command is meant to be used. Section 2.4. Slightly confusing. The manual indicates that only parent directories are scanned for referenced files to include. The example should discuss the relationship between files in subdirectories (e.g., sheets.tex) and how ConTeXt knows to include layout.tex. For example, would you compile sheets.tex inside the otherdoc directory? If so, how does sheets reference layout.tex? What makes the magic happen? Is it the project command? Show a small example of the relevant content for layout.tex and sheets.tex that links the two files together. Section 2.6. Is the texexc command deprecated? That is, is the preferred way to compile a document now the context command? comma’s is commas. low level is low-level. dependant is dependent. the more flexible we are should be rewritten, unless this is a subtle reference to yoga. Section 3.1. makes use of the actual can be: makes use of. In case of a two columned text the \textwidth is somewhat less than half the makeupwidth needs an explanation (likely because of a space between the two columns, but that should be made clear). Also, makeupwidth should have a backslash. What are \dimen registers? How do you use them? Do you need to use \dimen\textwidth? If not, then that should be clarified. In principal is In principle. In figures 3.2 to 3.8 the right and left should be swapped? (That is, put the left page to the left of the right page, and the right page to the right of the left page...) The first three alternatives result in an undesired output. Alternatives to what? Also, why is the output undesired? Why do we want to make the white space stretch? (Probably for aesthetics, but that should be explicitly stated.) Section 3.7. A lot of new concepts are introduced at one time (fonts, figures, frames, logo definition). Perhaps simplify the logo to simply an image, or framed text, or only one of those items. Then use a couple of examples to build on these concepts. Alternatively, introduce all the items used in the logo a little earlier (e.g., setupframed). [NTG-context] [***SPAM***] Simple Context Application to Cards
This is a trivial appliation for Context, but a useful one. I plan on designed some business cards, but am new to Context. My idea to to have a logo image in the upper left hand corner, with the company name to the right of it. This would be two block elements at the top of the card. In the middle will be the name, and below that the address, tel, etc. -- Regarding the two blocks at the top of the card: Something like the below: logo here Company name here .--. | | | o XYZ Printing Company | | o |This top area is the subject of this mail. | oCard Design Services| . | | | | |First_Name Last_Name | All this below the ... line is done. | | | contact information| | | '--' I take this as two blocks aligned horizontally on the 91mm x 55mm card stock. From my reading the Context options for doing this are: The margins are so small that using \inmarge{\externalfigure[company-logo][width=\marginwidth] } can not work. Which option should I pursue? a.) \startcombination ... \externalfigure + text block \stopcombination a.) \placefigurehere[... force] \startcombination ... \externalfigure + text block \stopcombination c.) \startfiguretext ... \stopfiguretext d.) some other Context mechanism. [NTG-context] [***SPAM***] simple business card
I used the \startfiguretext macro to place a logo in the top left and company name to the right of it. This works well. The only problem is a Figure 1 and non show up on the result. The none was from the example in the book. But, space is at a premium on a small card and I don't want any taken up by blank lines where an annotation might be like none. How can I keep the below the image text and their text space from being used? ___ If your question is of interest to others as well, please add an entry to the Wiki! maillist : ntg-context@ntg.nl / http://www.ntg.nl/mailman/listinfo/ntg-context webpage : http://www.pragma-ade.nl / http://tex.aanhet.net archive : http://foundry.supelec.fr/projects/contextrev/ wiki : http://contextgarden.net ___

Unfortunately, there isn't a really good beginners manual for layers, but take a look at http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Layers and http://wiki.contextgarden.net/BusinessCard (and maybe even http://www.pragma-ade.com/general/manuals/details.pdf ). I remember struggling because those examples are a bit complicated to start with, but better than nothing. The nice thing with layers is that once you get it, you can adjust everything by millimeter until it sits just right (and just right for your printer, variations in paper feed may make 1-2 mm differences between printers). And as long as you put each block on a layer of its own, you can move it independently, e.g. move the logo 3mm to the right but keep the text blocks where they are. [NTG-context] How to update context modules; thank you, write-up, and a couple of questions
I asked how to update context modules. Thank you very much to Marco for guidance, and I would like to write up how I used his advice to update a module without first-setup.sh. (I use a ubuntu/PPA installation of context and hence don't use first-setup.sh, which would make updating easy). 1. I downloaded the current version of the module (letter; http://modules.contextgarden.net/dl/t-letter-2013.07.31.zip in this case) from http://modules.contextgarden.net/ 2. I already have a personal /home/me/texmf directory (or would have created it). I put the zipped module update in this directory and unzipped it preserving the subdirectory structure. 3. I set the environment variable TEXMFHOME to my personal texmf directory (export TEXMFHOME=/home/me/texmf) 4. I ran mtxrun --script update --modules=letter to tell context where to look for the new version of the letter module. I could now tell from the output that the updated version of the letter module was installed, and I also confirmed from the log file: resolversmodules 'letter' is loaded interfacemacros processed mkvi file '/home/me/texmf/tex/context/third/letter/base/s-cor-01.mkvi', delta 36 interfacemacros processed mkvi file '/home/me/texmf/tex/context/third/letter/base/s-cor-01.mkvi', delta 0 (before the update, the lines above read /usr/share/texmf... instead of /home/me/texmf...) I hope that this write-up is helpful to others. Please feel free to comment or amend if I've misunderstood. I have several questions: (1) Is it possible to tell which version of a module is installed, i.e., that I am using the 2013.07.31 version of letter? (The version of context appears in the log file but not the version of the module.) (2) After I update of the entire context installation, how will I tell context to again use the /usr/share/texmf version instead of the personal version? (3) Could I have done this installation into /usr/share/texmf and used sudo mtxrun... to make the updated module work on a multi-user system? (4) Where can I put personal files that I would like context to use regularly. For example I have three personal files: env_letter.tex which I include with \environment env_letter; a pdf file with my logo; and a pdf file with a scan of my signature. Is there a standard directory to hold such files, and how do I let context know where to find them, for example, with mtxrun? (It seems like a waste to copy them to a new location every time I want to write a letter). Thank you very much.
