three questions:
- How can I control horizontal spacing of columns in natural tables?
- What about vertical spacing?
- How can I insert material after/before each cell, something like
\setuptable[row][first][before=bla bla] ?

[NTG-context] MetaPost 0.893 announcement

The MetaPost team is happy to announce the release of a new beta:

MetaPost 0.893 (beta for 0.9)

This is a public beta release for the upcoming version 0.9. The
sources and a win32 package can be downloaded immediately from
  http://sarovar.org/projects/metapost/
The source package should compile normally on all systems that are
capable of compiling a modern web2c-based TeX distribution.
The win32  package is intended for fptex or a similar web2c-based
installation, and has been tested only with TeXLive 2003. The
executables will *not* work for miktex, sorry.
After beta testing, this version will hopefully become the next
official release of MetaPost, at the end of April 2005. That is
roughly two weeks from today, so test reports are very welcome.
Of course, we welcome any comments (either good or bad) that you may
have. Simply replying to this message is fine, but see the bottom of
this message for a more formal way to report bugs and feature requests.
For those of you who have noted the large gap between 0.641 and 0.9:
We have deliberately chosen to step over some minor version numbers,
such that the first major release by the current team (this release
is planned for the autumn of 2005) can become version 1.0 without
causing additional confusion.

What is new in version 0.9:
--
1. There is a new internal quantity called mpversion that reports the
   current metapost version, and the version information is also written
   to the PostScript file.
2. The LaTeX sources of the mpman, mpintro, and mpgraph manuals have
   become part of the distribution package.
3. TEX.mp now has TeX format support through a pair of macros called
   TEXPRE() and TEXPOST(). This llows you to process the contents of
   the TEX() macro with, for example, LaTeX (instead of plain TeX).
   An example is given in the manual.
4. metapost now writes a %%HiReSBoundingBox comment
5. The EPS output no longer contains actual spaces within PostScript
   strings as for example output by label("a space"), but their
   octal escape (\040) instead.
6. The EPS output now also has a %%BeginProlog DSC comment
   as well as %%EndProlog
7. The comments in the Web source have been changed to point out
   that on modern machines, acquiring the random seed has actually
   become a system-dependant operation (a granularity of whole seconds
   is not small enough on new machines).
8. The 'newer' command now accepts more than 2 arguments, testing
   each of the files in turn.

Bugfixes in version 0.9:
--
1. Documentation improvements: all known errata and typos have been
   removed, better explanations of e.g. dash patterns and dotlabel have
   been provided, and a number of omissions has been rectified.
2. The BoundingBox was not computed correctly when a filldraw command
   with a noticeable pen size was used at the edge of the picture.
3. Paths starting with degenerate constructions like (0,0)--(0,0)--(0,0)
   could overflow memory.
4. The PostScript output could accidentally contain 8-bit characters
   within PostScript strings in previous versions because a test was
   shared between terminal printing and PostScript printing.
5. A bug has been found in the assignment of serial numbers to
   independant variables in metafont 2.71828. This bug affected MP as
   well, and the same patch has been applied.
6. The turningnumber was sometimes wrong in unexpected ways. The new
   implementation is still sometimes wrong (when there are strange path
   segments involved), but in a much more predictable way: the new code
   always draws straight lines between the actual points, and calculates
   the turningnumber based on that path instead of the actual path. The
   effect is that cusps and loops within segments are now completely
   ignored. A more thorough fix of turningnumber is planned for the
   next release.
7. There was an 'off by one' error in dvitomp wrt. the interpretation
   of virtual fonts.
8. mpto uses a new TeX macro for the generation of labels, making it
   more robust wrt. strange user code within the actual label text.
9. A missing colon in boxes.mp has been added
10. A missing save in mfplain.mp has been added
11. The generisize in boxes.mp has been fixed so that it now accepts
   [[ as a valid variable name

I've tried to typeset in Russian with utf-8 fonts, like explained at
contextgarden.net/Russian. cm-super-fonts are installed, included tfm-,
enc- and map-files. Running the example

Have I to edit some lines in type-map.tex? Or what could be wrong?

[NTG-context] formatted pagenumbers in registers

I have noticed a strange irregularity in the formatting of pagenumbers 
in one of my registers. Somehow not every pagenumber that should be 
bold has been rendered bold.

 I have defined this register as follows.

Does anyone know how to solve this problem?

some stuff searching the archive, but it doesn't really help me to get
along.

If I add to type-map.tex:
\starttypescript [map] [computer-modern] [t2a]
   \loadmapfile[cm-super-t2a.map]
\stoptypescript

I get russian fonts, but these are not the right ones.

I would be very glad, if anyone could help me to solve the problem.

[NTG-context] bug with \setupsynonyms

Hi,

formatting synonyms with \setupsynonyms does not work when these are
part of e.g. section headers. Example:

\abbreviation{XYZ}{whatever}
\setupabbreviations[textstyle=bold,synonymstyle=slanted]
\starttext
This should be bold/slanted: \XYZ/\infull{XYZ}. And it is.
\section{This ist not: \XYZ/\infull{XYZ}}
\stoptext

I think this is not as it should be.

Hello Albrecht,

Are you sure that you have saved your file in the utf-8 encoding and
not in koi8r or something? The problem of getting the wrong characters
can come from that. Moreover, the example:

from the wiki page works here. (Ok, since I wrote the page it would be
kind of weird if it did not). Have you generated the tmf files?

Have anyone else tried if it works for them?

It might not be as you expected, but it is as it should be. How about this?

There is a new beta as well as a new magazine:

concerning the beta, i hope that engine path support is now better in texexec; 
there is also a new version of pstopdf (for the moment called newpdftops); when 
  inkscape is installed (v 0.41) you mag give svg to pdf a try

concerning on the fly conversion ... i need to make a new manual (or magazine) 
explaining it first;

among the new things is 'typescript definitions in your source file' (makes 
sense for small typescripts, not for large ones); see cont-sys.rme for a new 
option (\preloadtypescripts; it burns some memory but it's faster)

[NTG-context] footnote reference mark font switch

Dear cartel,

I need to switch to a different font for the footnote reference markers. First 
attempt failed:

The idea is to print the reference marker, in this case `1', in a different 
font from both the main text and from the footnote text. That is, 
\setupfootnotes should let me transparently distinguish between

1. main text font;
2. reference marker font
3. footnote text font.

Please advise, and I have a nice trick to show you once this is done:-)

[NTG-context] Figures insertion.

Hi all,
Have been looking around in doc, but could not catch a simple way to insert 
an image into my doc.
What is the simplest way to do this ?
My image name is paris.bmp, and i don't have any info about the size (lets 
assume it is a 4cmx4cm).

I am not sure whether ConTeXt supports .bmp. You can try
\placefigure
[]
[figure:label]

{\externalfigure[paris][width=4cm]}
ConTeXt will look for picture files it understands that begin with 
"paris",
starting with the ones that produce best quality. If it doesn't like 
the .bmp extension,
convert your file to .png (lossless compression) or .jpg.
This also will have the advantage that your pdf file will become 
smaller.

[NTG-context] Defining references points

[Nikolai Weibull]

I have tried figuring out how to define a reference point at any given
location in a document, but haven't been able to come to a solution,
so...how do I do it?  What I'd really like to do would be to write:

\placerefpoint[name][description]

and then be able to write

see \about[name], \atpage[name].

with the obvious semantics.

[NTG-context] bi-lingual book

I am thinking in producing a book in two languages.
One language will be in the verso side of the paper sheet,
and the second language will be in the rector side. Trying to
be as mirror images so the reader could (if so desired)
learn one language from the other.

Questions:
1) Is there a way to do it with two files (one for langauge 1, another
for language 2)
or do I have to put all in one file?
2) Would it be easier to write two pdfs file and do a composition afterward?
3) How to control the length of pages in each language individually, to match
the content of the recto/verso pages.
Any general advice?

Use
\pagereference[name] or \textreference[name]{text}
to place a label, and \at{page}[name]  to refer to the page number.

[NTG-context] \definetype[...][option=...] problems

Try running

\setupcolors[state=start]
\definetype[JS][option=JS]
\starttext
\JS{function}\par
\JS{function }\par
\JS{ function}\par
\JS{ function }
\stoptext

The first paragraph will only be the first character, f, the reason is
made clear from the following two paragraphs.

In the second paragraph, function comes out, but it isn't highlighted as
a keyword, as the initial f has been consumed and thus the "unction"
part doesn't match any keywords.  I guess this is due to the
type-handling checking for double characters, like in \type<< ... >>?

In the third paragraph, only the initial space is output.  The rest will
never be output, as \PLsequence never gets a chance to be printed.

Only in the fourth paragraph is "function" output correctly, although it
is now surrounded by two spaces.

Any suggestions on possible solutions, other than removing the
option=JS?,

Don't bracket them, and the blank command parameters also play a role (to
over-ride the \high command, in case you have superior figures, for example).

Also, keep in mind that the particular font switches you chose are not
very visible in LMR with a single '1' character. Try:

\setupfootnotes[style=italic,textcommand=,command=,textstyle=boldslanted]

Is inkscape the beast that gave you so much trouble with the glib
library? I know I tried to install it and gave up after I couldn't
install glib. 

Why did you choose inskscape? I thought inkscape is supposed to be a
great gui svg-editor, but I wonder if you need all of its power just
to do a conversion. I use batik for my conversions, which is part of
the apache project. Of course, it is written in java, which raises
other problems.

Anyway, it is promising that ConTeXt it going to incorporate svg.

Ok, now we're getting somewhere...

The setup you presented was overkill-) but very instructive:

1.

\setupfootnotes[style=italic,textcommand=,command=,textstyle=boldslanted]

i. This changes the footnote marker in the main text (marker1), but also makes 
it a regular numeral aligned with the pre-footnote text.

b. The footnote marker in the note (marker2) also becomes aligned with the 
text of the note.

c. Marker1 is boldit and marker2 is italic.

d. Running text is normal;

2.

\setupfootnotes[style=italic,command=,textstyle=boldslanted]

Marker1 is now super, marker2 is text-aligned, marker1 is boldit and marker2 
is italic.

3.

\setupfootnotes[command=,textstyle=boldslanted]

Marker1 is super, marker2 is text-aligned, marker1 is bold, and marker 2 is 
normal;

4. 
\setupfootnotes[textstyle=boldslanted]

Marker1 is super, marker2 is super, marker1 is bold, marker2 is normal;

5.

\setupfootnotes[style=italic,textstyle=boldslanted]

Both markers are super, marker2 is italic and marker1 is boldit.


This last is the one I was looking for.

\setupfootnotes[style=\it,textstyle=\bs]

also works. This is interesting, because I thought that all options involving 
control sequences had to be surrounded by curly brackets. With curly brackets 
it does not work.

Feature request: I think that using

textcommand=,command=

to override high figures is too cryptic for regular users. It would be better 
to have two options e.g.

for marker1 (pre-note)

\setupfootnotes[textmarklocation=high] % low, or none

for marker2 (in-note)

\setupfootnotes[notemarklocation=high] % low, or none
 
with "high" as the default. This would be much more convenient.

2. Also, could we get the synonyms

`notemarkstyle' (for `style')

and

`textmarkstyle' (for `textstyle'). Much clearer.:-))
