I must admit that I find this a bit frustrating. The tex-gyre font

This type of patch to type-gyr.tex should help:

 -\starttypescript[serif][palatino][ec,texnansi,cs,el,qx,rm,t5,t2a,t2
 b,t2c,l7x]
 +\starttypescript[serif][palatino,pagella][ec,texnansi,cs,el,qx,rm,t

(you can't define a typeface for an undefined typescript).

Hans doesn't like avantgarde, so for you adventor you will have
to create a completely new typescript, as it was never previously
 defined in the core.

 Cheers,

'type-gyr.tex' defines!!! adventor. But the encoding-script is wrong,
 as Thomas has pointed out.

Oops, I should study the files more before replying, sorry.

 I still have some questions:

 - A complete (all gyre-fonts) type-script makes sense. Will 'type-
gyr' be fixed, or should I create my own?

It should get fixed.

 - What are the map-files at the gyre-site for?

The xxx-hh zips you mean? these are absolete.

 - Is the second \loadmapfile entry above redundant?

I _think_ so, but am not completely sure.

 - What is the correct texfont syntax, to install adventors small-caps
 variant?

I do not know, I am not even sure you should run texfont.

 - There are enc-files in the ??dvips?? subdirectory of the font tree:

  'fonts/enc/dvips/tex-gyre/q-encoding-sc.enc

Should I make use from these files? Will they be found there?

The enc files will (should) be found automatically by pdftex, even
if they are in the dvips folder. But this depends on the previous
question somehow.

[NTG-context] update mkiv

2007-08-07 Thread Hans Hagen
Hi,

I'm uploading an update. This fixes the missing texmfstart in the
windows related zips. I also added format generation entries in the
toolsmenu of scite. Because luatex runs from temp paths, you need to
regenerate a format after updating.

I also extended ctxtools --update (not tested).

luatools and mtxrun now accept a --selfupdate flag that will replace the
existing one in the bin path by the one in the script path

Well, not at all is the wisest answer I can give.

But I know for a fact that there are people out there (you know who
you are!) that use luatex for production work already. As long as you
stick to the highlevel context interface, are not interested in the
archivability of documents and do not hit a showstopper bug, it is
somewhat ok to do that.

Luatex is an early beta. I am always happy to hear about bugs, but
it may take a while for them to get fixed (in the next beta), so
don't start anything time-critical in luatex that cannot easily
be handled in another way, just in case.

Does LuaTeX already support OpenType things like

Yes. Best read the magazine has mentioned, and lookup

 regenerate a format after updating.

Something is broken at the garden. It says luatools not found. Luatex

I also extended ctxtools --update (not tested).

Some initial remarks.

* A newline is missing somewhere in luatools. I get

There should be a \n after test.tex

Also

* There is something wrong with typescripts.

\definetypeface[mainface][rm][serif][charter][default][encoding=texnansi]

The above code works fine with pdftex.

* I really like the new pretty printing module. The single quote

is much easier to understand in lua than it was in tex.

I adjusted it to my own situation (AGaramondPro, not the Premier

I declared this, maybe I went wrong here... I tried several different

\usetypescript[AGaramondPro][texnansi]
\setupbodyfont[AGaramondPro]

I also tried 'garamond', 'adobegaramondpro'.

Besides this I also noticed the script didn't support Semibold, which to
me is very essential. The Bold version of AGaramondPro doesn't have any
small caps, and Semibold just looks beter.

And if I understand the script correctly, the font in converted into
static versions supporting OsF and Sc, right? (Ruby isn't very readable,
when you're not a Ruby programmer).

It is nice to have such scripts. But I would like to know what
goes on behind the scene. In principle one has to know all the
steps to do it by hand.

Just use the great otftotfm by hand and you know what is missing.
Then try to read the source code of otfinstall and try to underst
 and what the steps are.

 Patrick

The otftotfm documentation is exemplary!

I would like to volunteer to help writing such docs for texfont or
otfinstall. But it is very difficult to get the information. Not all
of us are able to read sourcecode in perl and ruby and lua.

well, i still use texfont for type 1 fonts, but for open type i
use luatex anyway which can handle it directly (actually, mkiv also
usese afm files instead of tfm when available, so texfont is not
  needed any more)

How stable/reliable is LuaTeX for general use?

Well, not at all is the wisest answer I can give.

Is it possible to run both (mkiv/LuaTeX and mkii/pdfTeX) in parallel?

ok, i will try to create a 'more minimal' example.

Re: [NTG-context] OpenType in ConTeXt

Is it possible to run both (mkiv/LuaTeX and mkii/pdfTeX) in parallel?

And Mark III! That's what ConTeXt Live does

http://live.contextgarden.net/

There are some configuration issues and I haven't solved them all,
but that's mostly because I'm waiting for the steam to disappear after
the explosion of updates since two days.

In a couple of days I should have come up to a definitive solution and
I can document it on the site; I planned on doing that anyway.

Re: [NTG-context] Usage of \setupfootnotedefinition?

2007-08-07 Thread Matt Gushee
Thanks to Albrecht and Steffen for their quick and informative replies.

I guess \setupfootnotedefinition isn't what I am looking for. It seems
to mainly be a way to customize the footnote *numbering*, right? What I
wanted to try was to put footnotes in the margin. My text has a lot of
footnotes, and a few of them are absurdly long (no, I didn't write the
book); the conventional layout results at several points in truly
abominable pages, so I thought I'd try something unconventional. Guess
I'll have to do it some other way.

[NTG-context] Splitting footnotes

2007-08-07 Thread Matt Gushee
Hello, folks--

I am trying to typeset a book that has many footnotes; most of them are
of moderate length, but a few are terribly long[*]. I am trying to use
\setupfootnotes[split=*], but so far haven't got good results. You see,
there is only one footnote that really needs to be split across pages
(it takes up about two-thirds of a page); if I use [split=tolerant],
many footnotes get split, which I would like to avoid, but if I say
[split=strict], the longest one does not get split. I have also tried
numeric values, but that doesn't seem to do anything. So my
questions/comments are:

  1. What does a numeric value represent, and what is the range of useful
values? I first tried fairly small values like 1, 10, 25, thinking
it was the number of lines, then thought it might be a tolerance
value (as in \badness), and tried 1000 and 1. None of these
 numbers had any effect.

  2. It seems there is a very large gap between 'strict' and 'tolerant'.
Might it not be a good idea to have four steps, e.g. 'verystrict',
'strict', 'tolerant', and 'verytolerant'; or 'verystrict', 'strict',
 'medium', and 'tolerant'?

[*] Of course, the ideal solution would be to edit or delete the overly
long ones. However, I'm working with a well-known 19th century
text. Thus, it's in the public domain and I can legally do
whatever I want with it, but I don't feel it would be appropriate
to make substantive alterations to the content.
