[NTG-context] error with \sc

2024-04-02 Thread Peter Münster
Hi,

With ConTeXt version 2024.04.01, the \sc command produces an error:

fonts > preloading latin modern fonts (second stage)
fonts > 'fallback modern rm 12pt' is loaded
pages   > flushing realpage 1, userpage 1, subpage 1
close source> level 1, order 3, name './test.tex'
backend > xmp > using file
'/opt/context/tex/texmf-context/tex/context/base/mkiv/lpdf-pdx.xml'
mtx-context | fatal error: return code: 1

Test file:
  \starttext
  \sc test
  \stoptext

Is this a bug, or some misconfiguration of my installation?

TIA for any hints,

Hi,

I got an error message as following:

Control sequence expected instead of undefined

If I comment out the “\externalfigure[][]” line, then there is no error message.

I don’t know what is wrong in the sample code.
Please check the code.

Thank you for reading.

If you enable \setuplayout[grid=yes], lines get placed correctly.
Also floats work well (here and top).

But some columnsetspans still disappear, and footnotes get overwritten.
(I know, that tricky inset stuff…)

[NTG-context] error in column sets

2023-06-19 Thread Henning Hraban Ramm via ntg-context

In a minimal example like this:

\setuppapersize[A5]
\definecolumnset[TwoColumns][n=2]

\starttext
\startcolumnset [TwoColumns]
   \dorecurse{10}{\samplefile{knuth}}
\stopcolumnset

An extended example (nearly the same as in the manual) shows that some
column set spans don’t appear:

\showgrid\showframe

\definecolumnset[Beispiel][n=3]
\definecolumnsetspan[Zwei][n=2,color=blue]
\definecolumnsetspan[Drei][n=3,color=red]

\starttext
\startcolumnset[Beispiel]
\startcolumnsetspan[Drei]% this works

\stopcolumnsetspan

\startcolumnsetspan[Zwei]% This never shows up!
Zwei: \dorecurse{2}{#1: \samplefile{lorem}\par}
\stopcolumnsetspan

Nach: \dorecurse{15}{#1: \samplefile{knuth}\par}
\stopcolumnset
\stoptext

Also I seem to remember that column sets would enforce grid mode, but
they clearly don’t.

(BTW the old \startcolumns mode works better than I remembered.)

Re: [NTG-context] error with sbl bibliography on latest LMTX

2022-07-09 Thread Joey McCollum via ntg-context
Sorry, these are definitely errors on my part. The first one ("invalid
parent sbl:list:title:unpublished for sbl:list:title:thesis,
sbl:list:title:unpublished defined too") was thankfully an easy fix; I just
had to move \definebtx[sbl:\s!list:title:unpublished] before
\definebtx[sbl:\s!list:title:thesis]. I've now pushed this change to the
repo at https://github.com/jjmccollum/context-sbl.

The second error ("Undefined control sequence \currentbtxloctext") is
unfortunately more puzzling. In an effort to preserve backward
compatibility with biblatex usage, I focused on implementing citations in
the SBL style using \autocite, \inlinecite, \parencite, and \footcite
commands, and I neglected to see if the ConTeXt \cite command would work as
expected.

The \currentbtxloctext macro is used for handling more complicated
situations regarding volume, part, page number, etc. citations; for the
purposes of your MWE (and for most citations) a righttext with the page
number citation should also work just fine, so the lack of a loctext
parameter in the \cite command shouldn't be a problem. The
\currentbtxloctext macro is defined in most of the btx:sbl:cite setups in
publ-imp-sbl.mkvi, always via the command

```
\def\currentbtxloctext{\btxparameter{loctext}}
```

The default value of this parameter and similar ones should be \empty, per
the \definebtx[sbl] command in publ-imp-sbl.mkvi:

```
\definebtx
  [sbl]
  [
  ...
  lefttext=\empty, % empty by default
  altloctext=\empty, %empty by default
  loctext=\empty, %empty by default
  righttext=\empty, % empty by default
  punct=\empty, % trailing punctuation (empty by default)
  ...
  ]
```

If I've coded this correctly, then the loctext parameter should default to
\empty when you do not specify it for your \cite command. This seems to be
the case when you first invoke the \cite command (i.e., in the
btx:sbl:cite:footnote setup).

Here is the problem: if you invoke the btx:sbl:cite:inline setup from
inside the btx:sbl:cite:footnote setup, it seems that the loctext parameter
is no longer accessible, and thus, it does not get defined. If I patch the
btx:sbl:cite:footnote setup as follows, then I no longer get the "Undefined
control sequence \currentbtxloctext" error:

```
% Inline footnote citation setup (with intelligent trailing punctuation
replacement)
\startsetups btx:sbl:cite:footnote
  \removeunwantedspaces
\doifinstring{\btxparameter{punct}}{\btxparameter{autopunctuation}}{\btxparameter{punct}}
  \begingroup
  \letbtxparameter{punct}\empty % don't pass the trailing punctuation down
to the inline setup
  \let\doifendswithpunctelse\btx_sbl_doifendswithpunctelse % why is this
necessary? For some reason, \btx_sbl_doifendswithpunctelse is not
recognized within the footnote environment...
  \def\currentbtxcitealternative{footnote}
  \def\currentbtxcategory{\btxfield{category}}
  \def\currentbtxloctext{\btxparameter{loctext}}
  \def\currentbtxaltloctext{\btxparameter{altloctext}}
  \startfootnote
\Word{\fastsetup{btx:sbl:cite:inline}}% capitalize the first word in
the footnote (needed to render "Ibid." and "Idem" correctly)
% Add a closing period if there is no righttext
\doif{\btxparameter{righttext}}{\empty} {
  \btxperiod
}
  \stopfootnote
  \endgroup
\doifnotinstring{\btxparameter{punct}}{\btxparameter{autopunctuation}}{\btxparameter{punct}}
\stopsetups
```

But I still get errors involving other macros that now appear to be
undefined—specifically, the \btxsblshorthandbeforeloctext macro (and,
likely, the \btxsblvolumebeforeloctext macro, as well). These are initially
defined as "no" in the SBL style module outside of the various citation
alternative setups, but they are conditionally redefined as "yes" in these
setups based on specific information in the bibliographic entry.

This pattern suggests a bigger problem. Do these variables and the \cite
parameters fall out of scope when we enter a footnote environment inside a
setup? In my code, I noticed that a macro defined outside of the
btx:sbl:cite:footnote setup was unrecognized within the footnote
environment unless I freshly redefined it:

```
\let\doifendswithpunctelse\btx_sbl_doifendswithpunctelse % why is this
necessary? For some reason, \btx_sbl_doifendswithpunctelse is not
recognized within the footnote environment...
```

Meanwhile, if I change the default citation alternative to "inline" or
"paren", then everything works:

```
\usebtxdataset[default][references.bib]
\setupbtx[dataset=default]
\usebtxdefinitions[sbl]
\setupbtx[sbl:cite][alternative=paren] % or alternative=inline
\setupinteraction[state=start]
\starttext
superior typographic output \cite[lefttext={e.g.}][taraborelli:beauty].
Therefore, the {\TEX}book mentions that the word
\quotation{shel\noligature{ff}ul} should indeed be rendered without the
ff-ligature \cite[righttext={p.~19}][knuth:texbook].
\placelistofpublications%[numbering=yes]
\stoptext
```

I realize that the above "fix" does not truly solve the

[NTG-context] error with sbl bibliography on latest LMTX

2022-07-08 Thread Henning Hraban Ramm via ntg-context

Hi Joel (et al.),

I tried the SBL bibliography setup with the latest LMTX; the example and
bib database are from Dennis’ article on ligatures in the upcoming CG
journal:

I think that LaTeX extracted some parts out of ConTeXt for use with LuaTeX only
for font loading, and that is why I have it, not remembering the details. I
think I saw that LuaTeX a few years had more font loading stuff, but that was
moved to ConTeXt, but you show know better, as it would then would have been
you did it. :-)

It is line 97-105 in
/usr/local/texlive/2021/texmf-dist/tex/generic/context/luatex/luatex-math.tex

I have not done anything to that part, just adding some support for the STIX
font.

I may have not used it right, just copying it in right above line 97.

I first made a texinfo file, and then translated it into a context file, and it
turns out that the latter much simpler to create indexes and such: in the
texinfo format, one has to keep track of them in various parts because of TeX's
limited ability to do such things. In addition, GNU has policy of enforcing
original TeX with limited Unicode support, making it suitable for simpler types
of manuals only. There is no requirement to use this format or produce 'info'
documentation, but it would be nice to produce an HTML. Personally, I prefer
the PDF format.

Has not stuff been moved from LuaTeX to ConTeXt? —If so, I thought it might
have something with that to do.

luatex is just a tex engine and context is a macro package where context
mkiv is geared for luatex; the context fontloader has a generic core so
it can be used in plain and for latex some write a wrapper around that
font hndler for latex that evolved over years

it looks like you load a latex style so I suppose that 'arguments' is no longer

It does not contain it; it a copy in the same directory that has never changed.

\directlua {for k, v in pairs(_G) do print(k,v) end}

This will show you what is in the global namespace, maybe 'arg'?

If I put this code in right before the \ifdefined\directlua it prints a lot of
"nil".

print(k,v) should print two values, key and value

I'm not familiar with texinfo but in the context distribution are some
luatex-* files that show how to load the generic context font loader (in
plain tex). One can make a format with:

  mtxrun --script plain --make

an dprocess a plain file with:

  mtxrun --script plain foo.tex

I suppose that texinfo is close to plain so doable too.

However, it has been decided that the Info format should be extended with HTML,
probably HTML5 then. So one might generate that directly with ConTeXt. —This
was the reason for the other post.

Has not stuff been moved from LuaTeX to ConTeXt? —If so, I thought it might
have something with that to do.

It does not contain it; it a copy in the same directory that has never changed.

It works here ... can you try with the top line removed? Otherwise we
need to zoom in on where it fails (some path split issue).

Yes, it's the runpath directive not working.

ok, so can you track that down in mtx-context.lua? (i know you can)

The problem is that the argument "one" is nil, but the function
file.join checks only for one=="".

Lines 4541--4548:

4541  function file.join(one,two,three,...)
4542   if not two then
4543return one=="" and one or lpegmatch(reslasher,one)
4544   end
4545   if one=="" then
4546return lpegmatch(stripper,three and concat({ two,three,...
},"/") or two)

4547   end
4548   if lpegmatch(isnetwork,one) then

At line 4545 you check only for one being an empty string, but it
happens to be nil, so the program fails at line 4548.

Patching line 4545 like this:

4545 if not one or one=="" then

removes the error.

I leave to you whether the "one" argument should arrive nil to that
line, or it should be normalized to an empty string before entering
file.join.

Yes, it's the runpath directive not working.

Since I learned about *, I used it extensively, but then I recognized, I can’t
refer to the component filename with \currentcomponent any more. (I use it for
filter-generated contents like LilyPond music.)
Just as a warning, in case you stumble upon that.

You can have a filename with a space use

\startproduct [foo bar]

but you don't even need the filename when you replace it with *, e.g.

\startproduct *

or

  These messages come from the middle of the file luat-fmt.lua (lines
180 and 183, respectively, on my system) when ConTeXt tries to change
the working directory (that’s what “change” means in this context, just
moving to another directory, as in cd or chdir). The relevant extract
is

report_format("changing to format path %a",validformatpath)
lfs.chdir(validformatpath)
if dir.current() ~= validformatpath then
return fatalerror(startupdir,"unable to change to format path
%a",validformatpath)
end

  In your case validformatpath is a subdirectory of $TMPDIR, under
/var/folders/. However, if your Mac is anything like mine, /var is
actually a symbolic link to /private/var, so that dir.current() reports
a path starting with /private and the test fails.

The directory name luatex-cache suggests it's used for caching. I
interpret the output like „something happens during the generation of
the format file and therefore the file never gets generated“. I don't
know much about the internals.

I don't really have any reason for using MacTeX over texlive; I was once
told that this is the thing I want to use on a Mac when I was a student,
and have used it ever since.
I could switch over and try texlive if nothing else helps, though I
think it would be good to pin down the cause of this error and tell the
MacTeX folks about it.

Try to delete the luatex cache (i.e. all of
/var/folders/rj/hfjmjx796q102y4v23vh038cgp/T/luatex-cache) and try again.

[NTG-context] Error setting up ConTeXt in MacTeX 2020

2020-09-18 Thread Felix Krause

Hi all,

with MacTeX 2020 on a newly installed Mac, I have the problem that
ConTeXt doesn't work anymore:

$ context file.tex
mtx-context | warning: no format found, forcing remake
(commandline driven)

[…] snip lots of lines
resolvers | formats | changing to format path
'/var/folders/rj/hfjmjx796q102y4v23vh038cgp/T/luatex-cache/context/a86c089b384a3076dc514ba966a1fac9/formats/luatex'
resolvers | formats | unable to change to format path
'/var/folders/rj/hfjmjx796q102y4v23vh038cgp/T/luatex-cache/context/a86c089b384a3076dc514ba966a1fac9/formats/luatex'
mtx-context | error, no format found with name: cont-en,
aborting

system | total runtime: 5.315 seconds

The [ConTeXt docs][1] say that I should run `mtxrun --generate`, which
seems to run successfully, and `context --make`, which finishes with the
same „unable to change format path“ error (I believe this is what
context automatically does when compiling my file, hinted by the „no
format found. forcing remake“ message). I tried explicitly running
`context --make cont-en` which yields the same result. The given path
does exist on my hard drive.

I don't even know if the „unable to change format path“ message is
actually an error, but I have no other indicator of what goes wrong. The
only line that explicitly says „error“ is the one I get when trying
to process the file.

Interestingly, I have another Mac where I upgraded from MacTeX 2019 to
MacTeX 2020 and everything works there.

I made sure that everything is up-to-date with the TeX Live Utility.

How can I fix this problem?

Regards,
Felix

Hi,

It is possible that the Mint upgrade changed something in your environment that
affects ConTeXt.

Check for (new) env settings that start with TEXMF.

Re: [NTG-context] error after Linux upgrade

2020-07-10 Thread Jairo A. del Rio
Hi, jbf

If your path is set correctly (as well as TEXROOT and OSFONTDIR), you
probably need to do the following first:

mtxrun --generate
context --make

using either the TeXLive option or a standalone installation. AFAIK you
only need to do manual setting if you want to use the standalone; TeXLive's
ConTeXt scheme should work just fine.

Jairo

[NTG-context] error after Linux upgrade

2020-07-10 Thread jbf

Hi,

After upgrading from Linux Mint 19.3 to 20, when attempting to run the
context mydoc.tex command, I get the following messages:

jel@mycomputer:~/Documents/Context_docs$ context mydoc.tex
resolvers   | caches | path '/home/jel/.texlive2019/texmf-var' created
mtxrun  | unknown script 'context.lua' or 'mtx-context.lua'

Obviously it needed to resolve a path issue and appears to have done so,
but why did it choose .texlive2019/texmf-var? If I run 'locate
context.lua' I get
/home/jel/context/tex/texmf-context/scripts/context/lua/context.lua so
how might I get Context to resolve to this latter?

i'll add a catch there but the issue is likely that you enable synctex
while at the same time enable page imposition which reshuffles pages in
ways that can interfere

you can try to add

\setupsynctex[state=stop]

I’m not sure the full command sequence that runs by vim, anyone else who knows

but not when I run

Then I issued the regular context command via terminal inside vim

The two PATHs are not the same, so it is possible that one of the two
uses a different mtxrun, context and/or luatex that is elsewhere in the PATH:

test-by-shell-context.log:ENV >
PATH=/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/Users/janneman/context-osx-64/bin:/Users/janneman/context-osx-64/tex/texmf-osx-64/bin:/Users/janneman/scripts

but other than that, nothing stands out to me in that log.

An interesting experiment would be to run the macvim-generated commandline (for
the file with the error) in Terminal, and then that same commandline but with
the PATH set as in macvim.

I would suspect PATH problems. Try running this bit of code both ways,
and compare the differences:

\starttext
\startluacode
for a,v in pairs(os.env) do
   logs.report('ENV', a .. '=' ..v)
end
\stopluacode
\stoptext

If this is not user error (mine), perhaps this is a win64 build problem?
I can't imagine, as I compile these win binaries here using the mingw
cross compiler under WLS (1). I also compile native binaries (a little
slower than the cross compiled but a smaller file) and clang binaries
(much slower and larger). The farm also has a windows set up now for
luametatex but I just use the ones I make here. So, what gets shipped,
the mingw ones, should work ok. (The native ones are part of the the
backup plan, as on enevrr knows what will happen with mingw, not that
the compilation is demanding.)

Ok, that is not bad (I think on my already old machine one run took some
18 seconds for luatex and of course in mkii with pdftex I could watch a
movie while processing the file.)

The memory footprint also looks ok, especially given all these graphics.
(in most cases lmtx has a smaller memory footprint.)

*about LuaMetaTeX, Version 2.06.02* On Mac OS Catalina 10.15.4 .
Hope this may convey some useful information. On Mac OS Catalina 10.15.4 (
Mac mini late 2012, I5, 16GB RAM), using the current LMTX version just
downloaded from Pragma Ade, I installed Context LMTX and tested the
download by compiling the Metafun manual sources as indicated below:

Please consider that this mac mini is quite old and I am running mac OS
Catalina on an external SSD. This was the first installation on Mac of
Context today. I am quite happy with the results.

I wish to express my appreciation for the outstanding work that Hans and
the entire Context contributors team have carried out with focus and
perseverance through the years. Hello to Otared and Luigi with whom I was
in contact many years ago at the time of MKII .

I also installed the same LMTX Context release on the Linux Subsystem for
Microsoft Windows 10 and on different versions of Arch Linux. with the same
excellent results.

Thanks again for the excellent work,

Giulio

Sorry, I discovered the issue myself

Space between the : and = sign was the origin of error.

Problem solved by itself

Otared and Hans, thank you for your answers and Otared especially for your
sympathy! :-)

In the meantime I could get rid of "! Emergency stop" and "*" by changing
a \def-command which calls a luacode subprogram; see further down in my MWE.

My program run now looks essentially better, but
"--directives="system.showerror"
and "-status.html" still report an error: "! Undefined control
sequence"
without telling which control sequence is undefined. How reliable is this error
message? I don't know of control sequences in luacode or what does this error
message
mean?

Here is a MWE which shows my program structure. Sorry, this MWE works really :-)
During my attempts to find the error I got for a short time the message:
"Invalid
\starttext ... \stoptext structure" which I don't understand.

--- MWE

\def\projectpath{/home/sam/trip-2019/}

\startluacode
   userdata = userdata or {}
   u = userdata

   function u.table_save ( tab, file )
  local tab   = tab
  local file  = file

  dofile ("table_save_u_table_load.lua")
  table.save(tab, file)
   end

   function u.Init ( col )

  local col  = col
  local ppth = tokens.getters.macro("projectpath")
  local xO   = tokens.getters.macro("xO")
  local yO   = tokens.getters.macro("yO")

  local I = {}  -- Table of initial values
  I ["projectpath"] = ppth
  I ["column"]  = {}
  I ["column"][col] = {}
  I ["column"][col]["layerpos"] = {}
  I ["column"][col]["layerpos"] ["xO"] = xO
  I ["column"][col]["layerpos"] ["yO"] = yO

  u.table_save(I,"I-Table.lua")
   end

\stopluacode

%\def\Init #1 {\ctxlua {u.Init ([==[#1]==]) }}% --the blanks produced my "!
Emergency stop"
\def\Init#1{\ctxlua{u.Init([==[#1]==])}}% --in this form the command
works

\starttext
   \def\Column{A}%
   \def\xO{0}%  in pt
   \def\yO{20}% in pt

   \Init{\Column}%%
\stoptext
---
For those possibly interested in running this MWE I append
"table_save_u_table_load.lua",
a lua program to save and reload lua tables, found in the lua homepage. Anyway,
the
resulting flattened table "I" is here:

return {
-- Table: {1}
{
   ["column"]={2},
   ["projectpath"]="/home/sam/trip-2019/",
},
-- Table: {2}
{
   ["A"]={3},
},
-- Table: {3}
{
   ["layerpos"]={4},
},
-- Table: {4}
{
   ["yO"]="20",
   ["xO"]="0",
},
}

I think nobody will be able to help me in this case, I myself have to try again
and
again to finally find the error. If so, this would be the nicest christmas gift
to me :-)

Best regards,

Rudolf

What does this message mean? [1] shows only an empty page.
To this point my programm does all what it should with the exception of creating

Shure, there must be an error in my program. But where should I look for it?

Hi,

Since I have also suffered somewhat from the cryptic (and often useless…) error
messages, I understand your frustration :-)
Now, maybe if you do
context --directives="system.showerror" myfile.tex
then you get a file named « myfile-status.html » which is more helpful.

[NTG-context] error, no format found with name: cont-en, aborting

2019-11-13 Thread Joseph
Dear list,

Since a couple of betas (luatex/MkIV, not LMTX) I see the following error when
processing any .tex file:

$ contextjit --noconsole --errors some.tex
mtx-context | warning: no format found, forcing remake (commandline driven)

….. lots of lines of output

error, no format found with name: cont-en, aborting

Any hint on what’s wrong with my local setup by any chance? I use

first-setup.bat --modules=all --engine=luatex

to update standalone ConTeXt.

Thanks in advance,
Best regards

Joseph

ubuntu 64bit is ok on rpi3 & rpi3b+
You can try A64 form olimex, also ok with ubuntu 64bit.
And of course the rpi4.

Having it in TL is usually not sufficient, we should usually be able
to build it ourselves to get the latest version of luatex etc. (But I
could use the binaries from TL as a starting point.)

That's either cross-compiling, but probably easier to simply put some
proper hardware in place, so that we can also run the test suite.

I was thinking of getting hold of another Raspberry and trying to
install a 64-bit system on it. Or maybe dig out my super old Pine64
and build on that one. Nobody ever asked for binaries, so we were not
in a hurry.

Re: [NTG-context] error in LMTX?

2019-06-11 Thread Hans van der Meer
Found the origin of the curious error message containing my name.
Comes from the inclusion of a file named type-loc.mkiv residing in a directory
~/TeX/texmf/tex/context/user/ and containing:

\endinput

Op NTG ConTeXt nieuwsgroep, antwoord van Hans Hagen.

On 1/3/2014 2:33 PM, H. van der Meer wrote: (etc.)

How this got included? I have no idea.
But removing it did not make a difference, even after calling mtxrun --generate.

I did some more research and as a result now wonder what is happening.

The error occurred in this piece of code of mine:

\tabskip=1em\halign{%
\alignmark\hfil\aligntab\alignmark\hfil\cr
fontclass\aligntab\fontclass\cr
Regular\aligntab\truefontname{Regular}\cr
}

\aligntab and \alignmark were advertised as LuaTeX equivalents for & and #
respectively.

Then I took the following example from Victor Eijkhout's book "TeX by Topic",
page 197, last example.
That surely should work, was the idea.

\starttext
\halign{a###\cr 1&2\cr 1\cr}
\stoptext

However this fails! How can such a basic example in pure TeX fail? I wonder and
am curious what is happening here.

This is LuaMetaTeX, Version 2.00.0
tex error > tex error on line 3 in file
/Users/hansm/TeX/texmf/tex/context/user/type-loc.mkiv: ! Only one # is allowed
per tab

l.3 \halign{a##

There should be exactly one # between &'s, when an
\halign or \valign is being set up. In this case you had
more than one, so I'm ignoring all but the first.

mtx-context | fatal error: return code: 256

and using \alignmark and \aligntab this results in:

\starttext
\halign{a\alignmark\aligntab b\alignmark\aligntab c\alignmark\cr 1\aligntab
2\cr 1\cr}
\stoptext

And I am most curious how my name could turn up in the error message produced!

I've put in what seems to be necessary to fix
the current column of the current alignment.
Try to go on, since this might almost work.

mtx-context | fatal error: return code: 256

[NTG-context] error in LMTX?

2019-06-10 Thread Hans van der Meer
This looks to me as an error in the LMTX distribution:

tex error > tex error on line 6 in file
/Users/hansm/TeX/context-lmtx/tex/texmf-context/tex/context/fonts/mkiv/type-imp-dejavu.mkiv:
 ! Missing } inserted

}

\aligntab
l.6 fontclass\aligntab
\fontclass\cr

Because running under my old ConTeXtBeta does not aborts with the error.
system > ConTeXt ver: 2019.06.01 19:11 MKIV beta fmt: 2019.6.4 int:

I looked into that file but could not see what causes the error.

Are you a DANTE member? Then have a look at my German translation of Taco’s
article about installing fonts for ConTeXt in the latest DTK.
(The original is still unpublished – my fault, sorry guys...)

Try \showfont
or

\usemodule[fnt-10]
\starttext
\ShowCompleteFont{name:Unifraktur}{20pt}{1}
\stoptext

There aren’t a lot of good fraktur text fonts around, and most of those are
commercial. (I don’t know and didn’t check if Linotype published their old Dfr
fonts as OpenType at all.)

Unifraktur Maguntia is probably the best (technically) you can get.

Maybe try something from http://www.steffmann.de/wordpress/test-2/, but they
don’t have any OpenType features.

Yes, perhaps. In the next days I will have a look at it. What do you mean with
"even readable"? Of course the font should be readable, not only to me.

During the last days I tried "1. Use the Type1 version of the fonts: [1],
proposed by
Wolfgang. There a pair of .afm and .pfb files is needed by "new" ConTeXt and I
got
an "even unreadable" fraktur with plenty of errors. See appended
"Fraktur-afm-pfb.pdf".

Now, in the meantime, I had also a look into your book [2]
There is to be read:

"Most natural is to use OpenType or Type1 fonts. In the case of Type1 a
matching pair
of afm and pfb files is needed. However, there can be situations where there is
only
a tfm and pfb file (or not even that: just a bitmap file)."

What do you mean with that? Will "new" ConTeXt be capable in mastering a
situation with
"only a tfm and pfb file" as "old" ConTeXt did?
With "old" ConTeXt I had with "yfrak.mf, yfrak.pfb, yfrak.tfm", a wonderfull
Fraktur,
without errors.

 ("Old fuzzy fonts")

In the meantime I had a look at different Fraktur fonts. Both suggested fonts
[1]
and [2] were not acceptable to me for various reasons.

[1] has no gaps between words and many other errors. Horrible.

Afaiks that font is rather bugged indeed. I tried it, even made sure the
space (which is unspecified in the afm) is set to some value but then it
seems to use maybe some ligatures which are also unspecified. Old crap.

[2] is far too fat to be printed in a book. The reason could be that the
developers
wanted to make a font suitable for internet presences where the resolution of
screens
is far below of that of printing machines. The good thing with [2] is that
there is an
extended and interesting set of orthography rules and their changes over various
centuries beginning in 1600 up to today. But unfortunately the internet
presence of [2]
seems to be dead, the newest entry in member's forum I saw has been from
beginning of
2017.

You can tweak it a bit:

\starttext

\definefontfeature[thinned-10][effect={width=-0.10,auto=yes}]

\definefont[ufa][unifrakturmaguntia*default]
\definefont[ufb][unifrakturmaguntia*default,thinned-10]

\ufa test\par
\ufb test\par

\stoptext

I'm a bit puzzled by the 'dead' remark. When a project is finished,
should the author create bogus entries each year to make it look like
something new is done?

[3] I found the Leipzig-Fraktur-Font, a real Easter gift :-) It's comparable to
Yannis
Haralambous' nice fraktur font I used for years, but in ".otf"-format. It has
the slim
high "s" for use at the beginning of words and within words as well as the
small round
"s" at the end of syllabs and words. Ok, there seems to be no "!" (Instead I use "rm
!")
and the sharp "ß" I had to construct by "s\hskip-1pt z". But German umlauts can
be printed,
for instance 'ä' by '\"a', and different ligatures, for instance 'ch', 'st',
'tz', and
others exist.
So, most of my necessary conditions to a Fraktur font in ConTeXt-lmtx are
fulfilled.
As an example is appended "Leipzig-Fraktur-Example.pdf".

ok

I thank Hans and Wolfgang for helping me.

Best make a wiki page for this (summrizing).
