RE: Win2000Server Terminal Services Licensing Problem

2001-08-31 Thread Joe L. Casale

Support WebCast: Microsoft Windows 2000 Terminal Server Licensing
Description and Troubleshooting
March 15, 2001

"...A frequent question that we're asked is where exactly do I need to
install the Terminal Server licensing (slide 6)? And the answer for that
depends on the environment that our customers are in. If there's a
Windows 2000 Terminal Server in a Windows NT 4.0 domain, then the
Terminal Server Licensing service can be installed on a Windows 2000
member server. In fact, that would be required, because if you have a
Windows 2000 domain controller, then you are in a Windows 2000 domain.

In a Windows 2000 domain, this is required to be installed on a Windows
2000 domain controller. There's no restriction in the installation
Terminal Services License services themselves, but the service will fail
to start unless the machine is the domain controller in a Windows 2000
domain..."

Eval versions offer a slightly relaxed license model until you go into
production/expire @ 90 days.

Where did you install the license server?
What do your logs say?
More info...

On a win2k server, the TS Cals must be installed on a DC I believe. Even
still, this shouldn't be the case, because you can connect 15 pcs for 90
days from temporary licenses. Sounds like something else is wrong. Check
that the users can connect with TS in AD, and check configuration for
ports etc etc. I havent seen that before

RE: Number of files in a directory

2001-08-31 Thread Andrew S. Baker

There are ways to improve the performance of NTFS partition which have
many files in a directory.

Besides, you don't have to add it at the GUI. The CLI would be
immensely faster.

Hello!

This is the problem, we have an application here that requires 4 unique
mail profiles be setup under Outlook 2000 for each person that uses it.
And of course that person requires their own personal profile so they
can use email.

So basically we end up with every person needing the following profiles:

John Doe <- their personal one, set to default
Profile1
Profile2
Profile3
Profile4

We've been using an outlook.prf file placed in the WINNT folder of a
Win2K Professional Ghost image when we deploy the machines. Software
installation of Office 2000 is via Group Policy. This way when a person
logs in their personal profile gets setup automatically. We then have
to manually add the other 4 profiles.

Inevitably, we end up forgetting 1 or more of the profiles and the
application misbehaves. I need to figure out some mechanism to have
those 4 profiles added when the person first logs in. I hope to build
this into the Ghost image so we can just forget about it. Is there
anyway to do this?

We're using Exchange 2000 in an AD domain.

Thanks.

Instead of rebooting the server. Check the route table. If those users are
on another subnet, their route is most likely gone. So just recreate the
route to their subnet and you will be able to ping their machine and they'll
be able to get their mail.

Hi there,

On our NT4, sp6a, Exch 5.5 sp4, server, at times we get users who can not
access the server and we can not ping them from the server. Most of these
users are in other cites and connect via wan thru our routers. The solution
seems to be rebooting the server and like magic, we can ping them and they
have access to there mail. We have Win95, 2nd edit,Outlook 2000, clients.
The other users in the same office can access, thru same route and have no
problem. The event logs are clear as to locking out a address, or at least I
can't,(or don't knowwhat to look for), see it. TIA

RE: NT 4.0 Scripting dilemma

2001-08-31 Thread ntsysadmin

Here is something even more optimized (this is of course if the file names
are like you displayed!):

Dim bFound, i
bFound = False

For i = 1 To 3
If Len(Dir("c:\dir\file." & i)) = 0 Then
bFound = True

If MsgBox("Prompt", vbYesNo, "title") = vbYes Then
FileCopy "Source", "Destination"
Else
FileCopy "c:\dir\file." & i, "c:\dir\file." & i + 1
Kill "c:\dir\file." & i
End If

Exit For
End If
Next

If Not bFound Then MsgBox "message to user that they must request the
file.", vbInformation, "title"

Is this VBScript or what?

I would do this, because it's easy to get confused with nested IF
statements.

Select Case False
Case Len(Dir("c:\dir\file.1")) = 0
If MsgBox("Prompt", vbYesNo, "title") = vbYes Then
FileCopy "Source", "Destination"
Else
FileCopy "c:\dir\file.1", "c:\dir\file.2"
Kill "c:\dir\file.1"
End If
Case Len(Dir("c:\dir\file.2")) = 0
If MsgBox("Prompt", vbYesNo, "title") = vbYes Then
FileCopy "Source", "Destination"
Else
FileCopy "c:\dir\file.2", "c:\dir\file.3"
Kill "c:\dir\file.2"
End If
Case Len(Dir("c:\dir\file.3")) = 0
If MsgBox("Prompt", vbYesNo, "title") = vbYes Then
FileCopy "Source", "Destination"
Else
FileCopy "c:\dir\file.3", "c:\dir\file.4"
Kill "c:\dir\file.3"
End If
Case Else
MsgBox "message to user that they must request the file.",
vbInformation, "title"
End Select

Subject: NT 4.0 Scripting dilemma

I have coded '0' login scripts, but now must create one per my boss.

Simply stated, we have a file that we want to push down to each client. We
also want to allow the client 3 attempts at getting the file. Reason being
that a lot of them are over dial-up connections and the file is quite
large.

My impression is something like this:

if file.1 exists then
prompt user if they want it.
   if yes then
  copy file to client
   else
  rename file.1 to file.2
   end if
else
   if file.2 exists then
prompt user if they want it.
  if yes then
 copy file to client
  else
 rename file.1 to file.2
  end if
   else
  if file.3 exists then
prompt user if they want it.
 if yes then
copy file to client
 else
rename file.1 to file.2
 end if
  else
message to user that they must request the file.
  end if
   end if
end if

To me this makes sense, but how does one do this in a login-on script?
What script commands can be used to accomplish this?

RE: IP address denied access on Ex5.5.

2001-08-31 Thread Jeff Wilcox

Instead of rebooting the server. Check the route table. If those users are
on another subnet, their route is most likely gone. So just recreate the
route to their subnet and you will be able to ping their machine and they'll
be able to get their mail.

I found some info on Swynk that lets you add an alias to an instance of
SQL2K for apps that cannot access instances such as SMS. I am trying
this out to see if I can get SMS up and running using an instance of
S2K, if not i will re-install and let it create a deault instance.

you may be able to run the setup again but this time leave the default
instance name check on instead of specifying a name. If that does not
work

use 7.0 on this along with 2k the default instance will be 7.0 i
believe. If
you have 7.0 on the box and run the setup with the default check in
place it
should upgrade the server to 2k. Hope this helps.

Yesterday when we found we had the frames problem in IE6, M$ suggested
uninstalling IE6 so that IE5.5 would be active. We did that, but still had
the same problem. Today, M$ suggested that the problem was in the MLANG.DLL
and that it probably didn't get removed. I checked and found it to be true.
I renamed the DLL and copied the MLANG.DLL from one of our IE5.5 machines
and copied it into the Windows/system directory and replaced the IE6
version. That solved the problem, so it's obvious that the problem must be
in that DLL. So, for anyone who wants to revert back to an older IE version,
be sure to copy the MLANG.DLL that is the same version as the IE version
that you revert back to.

I would do this, because it's easy to get confused with nested IF

FileCopy "Source", "Distination"

Subject: NT 4.0 Scripting dilemma

I have coded '0' login scripts, but now must create one per my boss.

Simply stated, we have a file that we want to push down to each client. We
also want to allow the client 3 attempts at getting the file. Reason being
that a lot of them are over dial-up connections and the file is quite
large.

My impression is something like this:

if file.1 exists then
prompt user if they want it.
   if yes then
  copy file to client
   else
  rename file.1 to file.2
   end if
else
   if file.2 exists then
prompt user if they want it.
  if yes then
 copy file to client
  else
 rename file.1 to file.2
  end if
   else
  if file.3 exists then
prompt user if they want it.
 if yes then
copy file to client
 else
rename file.1 to file.2
 end if
  else
message to user that they must request the file.
  end if
   end if
end if

To me this makes sense, but how does one do this in a login-on script?
What script commands can be used to accomplish this?

RE: SMS 2.0 & SQL 2K

2001-08-31 Thread Lanza Joseph Contr AFRL/IFEB

Has anyone installed SQL 2K with SMS 2.0 yet. I tried about three months
ago but SMS would not install after SQL 2K was loaded. SMS worked fine with
SQL 7. Did I perform the installation backwards (i.e. should I have
installed SMS first then SQL 2K)?

Paul,

With sql2k you can run multiple instances on the same box. This means
that you can have more then one sql server running on the same box. All
you really need is to name each installation a different name. With SMS
you are required to use the default installation or the first
installation as the server that holds the sms databases. Usually the
default installation is the server name and that is probably why it
requires this. Hope this helps.

RE: SMS 2.0 & SQL 2K

2001-08-31 Thread Greg Tupper

Unsure what the real reasons are behind this. I am thinking that it would
be useful in some scenarios where you needed to bring down the sql service
for some reason and it would not effect all of the sites. Also would allow
people to cut out the additional cost of more hardware (downside would be
the resources would have to share so you would hinder the server performance
depending upon the workload). This way also allows you to run sql7 and
sql2k on the same box at the same time. There are probably a bunch of other
reasons but have never had a reason to setup a server in this scenario
because in my current environment it would not work very well.

NT 4.0 Scripting dilemma

2001-08-31 Thread William Rogge

I have coded '0' login scripts, but now must create one per my boss.

Simply stated, we have a file that we want to push down to each client. We
also want to allow the client 3 attempts at getting the file. Reason being
that a lot of them are over dial-up connections and the file is quite
large.

My impression is something like this:

if file.1 exists then
prompt user if they want it.
   if yes then
  copy file to client
   else
  rename file.1 to file.2
   end if
else
   if file.2 exists then
prompt user if they want it.
  if yes then
 copy file to client
  else
 rename file.1 to file.2
  end if
   else
  if file.3 exists then
prompt user if they want it.
 if yes then
copy file to client
 else
rename file.1 to file.2
 end if
  else
message to user that they must request the file.
  end if
   end if
end if

To me this makes sense, but how does one do this in a login-on script?
What script commands can be used to accomplish this?

Win2000Server Terminal Services Licensing Problem

2001-08-31 Thread William Rogge

We have only 1 Win 2K server in house. We have enabled Terminal Services
to prepare in the migration of our NT-4.0 Terminal Server Edition
platforms.

We have installed 60 Cals and 15 TS Cals. The TS Cals have been activated
(at least they show as activated).

In this setup, we can only establish 1 connection for another system. When
the second system attempts to establish a connection, it is refused. Upon
checking Event Log, it states that there are no more Terminal Service
licenses available.

Has anyone seen this, and if so, how can I correct this situation?

Thanks for your expert assistance.

NT Backup Problem

2001-08-31 Thread Gordon Olson

I am using NT Backup and I am getting the following error "There is no
unused media available with the selected type." In TechNet Q269600 is the
only article listed and I tried it even though it is for a different drive.

I have tried several different tapes, same message.

How do you get the device to recognize the media? The device works ok with
Backup Exec.

Any suggestions, I am running NTbackup for exchange on another DLT device
and it works fine.

After I rebooted my NT4.0 SP4 development server today it returned only
the the CTRl-ALT-DEL dialog box. The NT splash banner was not in the
background. I logged in but only received a blank blue screen, no icons
or desktop. No task bar etc.

I can even hit CTRL-ALT-DEL and get the task manager dialog and that all
works, but I cannot get access to the desktop.

Anyone have any idea what the heck is going on? There is no virus, not
connected to Internet or no programs have been installed.

Thanks,

RE: Internet Explorer 6.0

2001-08-31 Thread RZorz
Title: Message

Got
this from Lockergnome Tech Specialist:
IE6 and McAfee
No less than four readers wrote in to complain about Internet
Explorer 6 and McAfee virus scanning software. While I don't consider this a
Microsoft problem, some might. Norton AV seems to work just fine on one of my
systems, but I can't personally speak for McAfee. Tread lightly around the
issue, as their support has told two of those that wrote in very bluntly that
they should simply reinstall IE 5.5x. That's a complete cop-out in my book.
There was plenty of lead-time on IE6 for McAfee to get their act together, so I
don't think there's any excuse for not having an update available. Just wanted
to warn you.

I can even hit CTRL-ALT-DEL and get the task manager dialog and that all
works, but I cannot get access to the desktop.

Anyone have any idea what the heck is going on? There is no virus, not

It sounds like explorer did not start, hit ctrl alt del and then select task list, and
then run explorer.exe, or of course you could reboot.

Turn off, your life will be the better for it. Create a
spreadsheet/database (your choice) and start tracking your licensing the
old fashion (read better) way. If they can't prove the license exist,
then time to break out the check book. Good luck we just went through
this at the request of Microsoft. Lots of fun!! Jeff

webdav and AD authentication

I am trying to use a webDAV client with a win2k server running IIS. I set
up a virtual folder DAV and gave rights to everyone, domain users,

I set security on the virtual directory to basic authentication and gave it
a default domain of the NT-style domain name.

The problem I have is that only members of group "administrators" can
authenticate no matter what I change AND I was unable to use new AD-style
domain names in the basic authentication field.

Anybody have WebDAV folders set up to work who can give me some pointers?

RE: Installation od second Dc

2001-08-31 Thread Jeff Wilcox

Is the 2nd DC a DNS server. If so, you don't want to be using itself as the
primary DNS server. You should configure DNS to use another DNS server
only. This way dcpromo doesn't try to replicate changes to itself.

Hi,
I have a very basic problem. It may be very simple But I am missing
some thing. When I want to add second controller in a domain I get the
error message that "Assess denied You have no permission to change
account of the "compuername$". A dialog box of new user name and
password is opened. I tried all possible accounts but without success. I
am tha local and domain administrator of these machines and domain.
Just for test purpose I tried to add the same server as sub/child
domain, and it was successful.
But when I tried to remove that sub domain I get reply "Active Directory
Installation failed The operation failed to replicate off the
changes made locally. The DSA operation is unable to proceed because DNS
lookup failure"
Any Help

If your on a really tight budget you can get good reliability with a

Re: NT 4 PDC replacement

The PDC will not accept logons but your BDC's still can, so user can logon
during this process. You cannot add user or computer accounts to the domain
however.

They
have a test to see if you need to update the version to work with IE
6.
I have
3 machines that I have it installed on and none have needed an
update.

David,

Well I guess you could say that I have one leap down. I reestablish a trust
between the 2000 PDC and another PDC on the same network used by our
software control engineer. Of course I had to delete it on both ends and
actually add it back but it works. He is running NT 4.0 with SP 5 on the
machine. For some reason though I am still unable to establish/add a trusts
either way with the PDC in our MIS department. I'm now wondering if possibly
MIS has some type of permissions/security setup that could be preventing the
trust and they simply are over looking it. The other PDC, the one I did
establish Trust with, doesn't have any permissions or security setup on it.
Since I just installed our PDC it doesn't have any security setup either.
Our MIS dept did have to make changes on there side to accommodate the
change in our PDC name and possibly some security needs to be set for the
new PDC name. I'll keep you informed

Mark,

I added my GCS about 3 days ago.
Sounds like I have the same setup as you but my NT 4 domain PDC is running
SP5.
I imported a LMhost file from the WINS console on the W2K server. I then
broke the trust and re-established it again. Now I can use one user account
to admin both domains.>>>BUT
Every now and then I do get the "access denied" message when trying to
access the W2K side from the NT4 side. But, I can view all resources without
a problem.
I am working on finding out why.
Post more of your successful leaps and bounds so I can follow.

David
