RE: Domain Admins missing

Why not use restricted groups if you want Domain Admins to be the only member?

The script below will only add the Domain admins btw. It won't remove the
possible other members.

My google-fu is lacking again, these late nights are getting to me. I found a
script that I was able to procure and drop on the gpo for anyone who is
interested..

Dim WSHShell, WshSysEnv
Set WshShell = WScript.CreateObject(WScript.Shell)
Set WshSysEnv = WshShell.Environment(PROCESS)
On Error Resume Next

UserString = WshSysEnv(COMPUTERNAME)

GroupString = Administrators
Set GroupObj = GetObject(WinNT:// UserString / GroupString)
GroupObj.Add (WinNT://DOMAINNAME/Domain Admins)
Set GroupObj = Nothing

Set WshShell = Nothing
Set WshSysEnv = Nothing
Wscript.Quit

I just noticed today at one client that Domain Admins is missing from it seems
like every workstation in the company. We have a script that runs that makes
sure only Domain Admins is in the local Administrators group, and has been
running for about 6-7 months without change. Im guessing something happened
with it and its now removed Domain Admins. Is there an easy way to add that
back in through policy or similar?

Thanks

Since this is the NT list you don't say what email application. If
exchange you might want to check out Ninja from the list sponsor.
You could do this and still allow them to send attachments within the
company just not out and they could also still receive attachments from
the outside or not. Very flexible.

Is there a way to allow users to use an excel or word document but
prevent them from emailing it (even in zipped format) outside the

User Password Reset Software

2007-12-28 Thread Andy
Hi we are looking for a password reset program that users can use to unlock
there accounts.

What we want it to do is:

* Have a Windows logon GUI that can be deployed via AD

* When user unlocks there account they have to answer set questions

* If user calls up the helpdesk to unlock account, the helpdesk has to answer
them a question to get them to unlock it

* Allows it to be setup so when a Windows password is reset it can also rest
SQL databases and also UNIX passwords

Can anyone recommend a product?

Hi all!

I'm having a slight problem with my Active Directory integrated DNS. I have a
laptop with both wired and wireless. The wired interface has a DHCP
Reservation, and the wireless just grabs any address when it is used. The
problem that I am having is that I keep getting a duplicate A record in DNS. I
have deleted the entry, but within a few hours, the A record for the wireless
interface keeps getting re-added and then I can't get to the laptop.

What am I missing here with regards to eliminating that record.

Thanks in advance.

Oh sure. I've had this ability on just about any laptop I've owned. Just
set the screen size to be larger than the max pixels of the physical
display. Voila: Windows lets your scroll.

This always seemed to be device manufacturer specific, but perhaps I'm
mistaken on that point.

I've got a friend that just picked up one of those UMPCs (a Sony) with a

utility that will let him configure a larger 'virtual screen' and let him
use the 4.5 display to scroll around this larger screen ?

Thanks in advance

(I explained that I did it because then we'd get to be able to get updates
for the other applications that Microsoft Update provides - SQL updates,
etc. And he doesn't want that; he wants to manually go and get those updates
and install them. I suggested just not choosing those updates, and he said
he'd rather not chance having someone forget and install a SQL service pack,
as an example, that might break something in production).

I haven't found anything that says you can do this. I imagine, if you
could, you'd have to uninstall the ActiveX control, and re-install the older
Windows Update control. But I haven't found out if it's even possible.

 Anybody know?

RE: Websense question

2007-12-28 Thread Joe Heaton
Thanks for the response Jim. We haven’t implemented the Watchguards yet. This
Websense thing is a “gotcha” that I just thought about a few days ago, and need
to research. If I understand what you’re saying, I’m not going to be able to
use Websense anymore, if I put in Watchguard firewalls? That may end up
putting the kibosh on ordering that brand of firewall after all. I don’t think
the management is going to want to get rid of Websense.

The reason you’re having this issue is that the way Watchguard uses Websense.
I’m not sure you could actually integrate the Watchguard into your current
Websense plan as it expects to see it as part of a Watchguard Management Server
and not separately. Any Watchguard firewalls you plan to implement would need
to have their web control managed separately from your Checkpoints. It’s been
a *LONG* while since I was a Checkpoint guy, but as a Watchguard guy I can tell
you, in this fashion, they aren’t compatible.

Dennis,

Kind of, but not fully. We currently have Checkpoint firewall, and we have
Websense Enterprise, a separate product. Websense, internally, has some type
of integration with Checkpoint. I’m not sure how that works, as I was not here
when they implemented it. However, there is a list on Websense’s website, of
supported firewall devices, and Watchguard is not included. So I’m wondering
what I’m going to have to do to make the two products work together. I’m
probably going to end up calling Websense, if I can find a good number, and get
the information from them, but I was hoping to get some real world info first…

Joe,

Watchguard integrates SurfControl (owned by Websense) into some of their
products and then call it WebBlocker. We have it licensed but are only using
it on a couple of categories and don't pay much attention to it on a daily
basis. Not sure if that's what you're asking about but could probably come up
with some documentation on it for you if necessary.

RE: screen scroll utility ???

2007-12-28 Thread Erik Goldoff
not really popular, they've been around in one form or another for a
while... I remember the Toshiba Libretto back around 1996 to 1998, ran full
Windows, not CE, was about the size of a VCR tape and only a little more
than a pound. Got some of those when I was at the CDC, and the folks that
travelled extensively, especially internationally, REALLY appreciated the
small size.

Much more capable now in the 'official' UMPC form, they're great for mobile
folks, checking email, researching web, referencing documents and
spreadsheets, and some of them can be hooked to external monitors and
keyboards making them much more useful for regular tasks like presentations
and workflow. With a real hard drive, they work pretty well for carting
around your 'storage', but that's a double edged sword for the security
folks. And even as small as a 4.5 screen is, that's MUCH more usable than
any smartphone size screen.

The original goal of the 'Ultra Mobile PC' was to be convenient and less
expensive than a laptop, but oh well...

utility that will let him configure a larger 'virtual screen' and let him
use the 4.5 display to scroll around this larger screen ?

 Thanks in advance

IE has the option of changing the view size, which allows you to scroll
around the screen – if it’s just web browsing that’s a problem.

2 issues...

2007-12-28 Thread Rishi Kumar
Guys,

I have two different issues:

1) I saw something very strange happen to 2 servers on our network.

I went into the TCP/IP properties (this is a Windows 2003 domain), on a
server, just to check the DNS entries...and while just VIEWING the
configuration, I lost connection to the server and the server lost it's
network connection. I had to reboot and then enable the NIC, as it was
disabled when the machine restarted.

This happened on 2 servers on two consecutive days. Has anyone seen
something like this before?

Is it possible that some sort of network observer program would do this?
(I had heard of some people testing it) Or something I need to know
about windows NIC settings? Update drivers?

2) We also had a SQL server go down, but in this case, it fell
out of the domain. IT was no longer listed when looking for it in ADUC.
After re-adding the server to the domain, all SQL replication worked
fine again, but has anyone seen that before? What would cause this?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Rishi

AFAIK:

Each unique namespace is its own DNS zone. Anything between a . is break
in the namespace, and thus makes it unique.

I dunno how ZoneEdit makes its own distinctions for the benefit of their
services, but nested subdomains constitute multiple DNS zones.

OT: Fwd: [ISN] IT security goes Prime Time

December 27, 2007

If the watermark for attaining hip-ness in American culture is landing
on TV or in Hollywood, in addition to the endless video annals of the
Web -- such as YouTube [1] -- then IT security, and penetration testing
in particular, has finally made it.

Yes, we've been seeing some pretty sophisticated hi-tech gadgetry in
films since before the Sean Connery era of James Bond, and some truly
awful attempts to flesh out the perils that exist in the electronic
environment, but now things have gotten so absolutely wild in the real
world that security gamesmanship has gone reality TV.

Last week, CourtTV began running a new series dubbed Tiger Team in
which experts in IT and physical security engage in a pre-planned game
of cat-and-mouse pitting them against high-priced protection systems put
in place by actual businesses.

The initial results aren't pretty. That is, for those companies who
think that they've invested sufficient time and energy in trying to
defend their physical and informational assets.

In the show's initial episode, available for viewing here [2] in four
clips offered via official the CourtTV site (with minimal advertising
inter-dispersed I might add), the Tiger Team experts take on San Diego's
famed Symbolic Motors, a dealer of the ultimate forms of motor vehicular
expression -- Lamborghinis, Lotuses and Bentleys, yum.

Without ruining all the details for you, the team makes it perilously
clear that they can and will defeat expensive IT security, video
monitoring, motion detection and physical defenses with a little
easily-pulled off reconnaissance (including a free test drive in a new
Lotus Elise, nice bonus dudes!) and virtually no resistance.

One of the most shocking aspects of the exercise is when after doing
some rudimentary dumpster diving, the team uncovers details of the
dealer's IT services provider (hi there LANSolutions! We provide
comprehensive, impenetrable safeguards for your business! Hahaha!), and
merely pose as one of its employees to gain access to Symbolic's server
room and all the data therein.

Having nearly fully compromised the organization's entire perimeter
defenses beforehand, the team carries out its plan and breaks in during
the night and has its way with another free test drive.

And oh yeah, they also find a sales contract with all the personal
information of an individual who appears to be well-known Hollywood car
aficionado Nicholas Cage, and the records of a lot of other celebrity
customers. So if they get tired of driving their free Lambo Murcielagos,
Tiger Team can carry out some uber-targeted identity theft (if Cage has
any money left from all those divorces, that is) whenever they feel like
it (perhaps his next role should be All my career earnings gone in 60
seconds).

Not detailed in the CourtTV show, but fed to Zero Day blog, is the
information that the Tiger Team utilized automated penetration testing
tools made by vendor Core Security as part of its arsenal for finding
ways to crack the dealership's IT systems.

Nice product placement, but the usage also points out, as recently
described to me by Symantec security research guru Carey Nachenberg, how
bad guys are using the same commercially-produced tools as used for
protection by the white hats to find ways to get inside company
perimeters.

The high-price of such products is clearly no longer an issue for people
backed by a billion-dollar cyber-crime industry it would seem.

I'm still waiting for someone to hire Steven Spielberg to make Richard
Clarke's Breakpoint into a Hollywood blockbuster (and if done right I
think it could be), but in the meantime we can let the Tiger Team's work
speak to the real world relevance of IT security and the increasingly
dire landscape of criminal activity being carried out by technologically
advanced criminals.

CourtTV is promising more Tiger Team episodes in the near future.

Until then, keep it tuned here for further details.

on TV or in Hollywood, in addition to the endless video annals of the
Web -- such as YouTube [1] -- then IT security, and penetration testing
in particular, has finally made it.

It looks like if they are hosting our DNS as well as our domain names, I can

Thanks,

Any recommendations?

The Sony has a zoom feature that you can then scroll around the larger
display with. Is this what you are talking about? Its on the side with a + -
magnifying glass. You can set different resolution on the unit (mine does)
and then move it around with the device. I radmin to mine a lot since it has
my road warrior stuff on it and use it on a full screen, very nice device.

Well, there are other manufacturers making them now. I support a few of them
and have one until recently. Let me say that if you need laptop functions
(full blown o/s) and want to be able to put it on your hip or in your bag
this is the way to go. Its great for travelling since it has a dvd drive and
the back props out like a dvd player. The slide out full keyboard is small,
but a lot easier to use then say a WMP device. You get full installs like
word/office, and with built in wifi and wlan your always connected with it.

The competitors are much less money since they aren’t ‘sony’ but usually
weigh a little more or have a little less horsepower. Don’t forget it has a
dock like a laptop so you can get full key/mouse/vga functions to it as
well. Personally I thought it was a great admin tool/device but I wouldn’t
want to try to work for long periods of time on it.

 *Subject:* RE: Security Camera's

I've had to do some budget camera shopping myself, and have a little
 insight on IP cameras.

Axis is the #1 brand for cameras. They are crisp, responsive, and robust.
An indoor cheap axis (the 207 model) looking through a window looks better
than some of the outdoor models available from other vendors. Prices can
skyrocket quickly with these cameras, shooting over $1000 per camera is easy
 to do.

At the other end of the spectrum we have the D-Link. I've dealt with a few
of these cameras, and the only one that worked for me was the DCS-900...
their cheapest model. For less than $100, this camera has been running in my
shop for over a year now non stop... but it's frame rate is horrid (6fps
using MJPEG). Others I've tried (like the PoE DCS-1110) won't work with my
 software (more on that later).

There is a company named gadspot that makes very inexpensive cameras.
After putting one of their cameras through the paces, I'd recommend avoiding
 them.

Cisco has come out with a new IP Camera. It's got most of the right
features like PoE, a DC Iris, MJPEG and MPEG4... And since it's a clone of
one of their Linksys products, it's fairly inexpensive. I wouldn't mind
 trying one of those.

As for the Trendnet, the only camera of theirs that caught my eye was the
TV-201p, which appears to be one of the least expensive PoE cameras on the
market (except for the before-mentioned D-Link DCS-1110). If it can do MJPEG
support, It would be a killer indoor camera for cheap. Many of the others
simply will not work with my server software.

Panasonic makes some good looking cameras on paper, but I have yet to get
one in my hands to try out. If you check out Panasonic's website, they have
cameras in the Consumer and in the Corperate sections of their site, each
with their own line of cameras.

Vivotek is an interesting camea vendor. Many other vendors use re-branded
versions of their camreas. (For example, 4XEM uses rebranded Vivotek gear.)
If you're in the States, it's a little hard to get these Taiwan cameras, but
they have a very good price/feature ratio.

But when we decided to get a camera for outdoor use at our school, we
decided on the Toshiba IK-WB02A. Actually, we decided on the camera kits
that came with the zoom and wide angle lens. My review of these cameras are
that they are quite functional, robust (I have 1 out of 5 that is having
problems, but I think it has more to do with my wiring than the camera
itself) and has the features we needed for a price we could afford. We house
them within Videolarm outdoor heated and ventilated housings and have been
quite happy with the camera's performance. My one complaint would be the
difficulty it is to focus the cameras, especially since it is best to focus
these cameras during night. Since the iris opens completely duing dark
hours, the focus must be spot on... otherwise the picture gets fuzzy very
 quickly.

If I could make suggestion: No matter what camera you get, make sure it
doesn't requires Internet Explorer and doesn't support other browsers.
This basicaly means that the camera can only be viewed with an ActiveX
plugin... which means it is only supported by Windows and IE. Never limit
yourself to a single platform if you can avoid it. this is why I cannot
recommend most D-Link or Trendnet cameras.

As for server software, I only have dealt with 2: ZoneMinder and Lux Riot.

Lux Riot looks to be an excellent windows based camera recording software.
but, since license for the camera was going to cost as much as the hardware
I was going to run the hardware one, I decided to look at the open source
 alternative.

ZoneMinder is quickly maturing into an excellent piece of software. It can
do motion detection, camera control, Follow the moving item, and many other
advanced features... but it also has its' limitations: Works only with JPEG
and MJPEG cameras, no MPEG4. Scheduling needs work. Reviewing video could
use improvement. Oh, and you'll have to build it for yourself. But, there is
one great advantage to going withe the Free software first... If ZoneMinder
ever stops meeting our needs, We aren't heavily invested in it.

I hope this info is useful to some of you.

RE: Looking for a DNS provider

2007-12-28 Thread Andy Ognenoff
ZoneEdit considers a zone anything you need sub records for – so the A
record for sub.domain.com lives in the domain.com zone but if that’s all you
need it’s just a zone credit for domain.com.

If you needed an MX record off the sub.domain.com it would be a new zone,
according to ZoneEdit. I believe I’ve even setup A records as
sub1.sub2.domain.com and it only counted as 1 zone credit because it was
under the domain.com zone and that's all I needed.

The other things you can use zone credits for include adding a backup MX
service they host, or adding additional name servers beyond the two they
provide for free.

I've been using them for years and have had no problems - I think I've had
something like 30-40 zones with them.

AFAIK:

Each unique namespace is its own DNS zone.  Anything between a . is break
in the namespace, and thus makes it unique.

I dunno how ZoneEdit makes its own distinctions for the benefit of their
services, but nested subdomains constitute multiple DNS zones.

Logging print jobs

2007-12-28 Thread Craig Gauss
Looking for a utility that would log some details on print jobs. It
would be nice to have the source and time logged.

We are still experiencing some print issues with various HP printers and
we need to get some more information to help troubleshoot.

Greetings !

I've got a friend that just picked up one of those UMPCs (a Sony) with a
4.5 screen, running Vista 'business' on it. Anyone know offhand of a
utility that will let him configure a larger 'virtual screen' and let him
use the 4.5 display to scroll around this larger screen ?

Thanks in advance

You need more than the default Windows print auditing settings?
Windows auditing will tell you who printed, date, time, file name,

SonicWall NAT'ing question

2007-12-28 Thread Andy Shook
SonicWall Pro 1260 w/enhanced OS

I need to configure this box to NAT/PAT for a new network
(10.101.2.x/24) I just brought online. This sonicwall is only going to
be in service for a few more weeks, as I'm migrating to a new ASA 5510.
I did figure out the routing on the sonicwall so it can get to the
aforementioned network but nodes on that network can't get to the
Internet. Do I create a new NAT policy? What am I missing?

RE: SonicWall NAT'ing question

2007-12-28 Thread Joe Heaton
As long as the default gateways are setup properly, it should work. The NATing
that I’ve ever done with Sonicwall is incoming stuff, ie web, exchange, etc.
So the router/switch that handles the new network needs the internal port of
the Sonicwall as its default gateway.

OT: HP Procurve - some questions

2007-12-28 Thread Kurt Buff
We're putting together a plan for upgrading our network, and I have a
couple of questions regarding the Procurve 3400 series.

They revolve around a decision I'll have to make about whether to get
two 24-port switches, or a single 48 port switch.

I'd like to get two of the 24 port switches, and put them in a stacked
configuration, so that if one of them dies we won't lose everything,
with our servers splitting their NICs between the two 24 port
switches.

They'll be the core switch(es) for our production network, and as such
will be the VLAN termination point, router, root bridge, etc., and I'm
wondering what the gotchas are for this kind of setup.

Does anyone have experience with these, and how they behave if one of
the stacked switched does a face plant?

I'm also interested in the speed penalty that stacking incurs, if any.
I haven't found hard figures on the HP site, but we're going to be
considering SANs later in the year, and I want to make sure that we
don't compromise their inherent 10Gig capability - we're thinking
iSCSI, or even FC over Ethernet, if that becomes useful by then.

TIA,

Kurt

With that caveat, all HP stacking does is let you manage the switches
using a single IP address. One of them is designated the commander and
the others are members. If one goes down (even the commander) the
others
continue to function normally. When you connect to the stack using
telnet/ssh, you are prompted to select which switch to manage. When
you
connect using http, you connect to the commander and have to select
the
others to manage them. The configuration on each switch is independent
-
you have to enable VLAN's on each one, define the same VLANs on each
 one, etc.

There is no special stacking connection, you just tie them together
using a LAN connection on each one. So, you don't get the full switch
backbone speed between stack members. Only the port speed of the to
 ports connecting them.

2007-12-28 Thread Mike Gill
Why do you want talk about registrars like that? I mean, the way it comes
across in your message, you do this often? I would think you would want a
registrar that holds a higher level of confidence in such statements.

Anyway, the point is if you register all your domains at the same registrar,
then you gain ease and convenience in those areas for managing DNS. I don't
use a tier 1 registrar, but the sub of TUCOWS that I use have not given me
one reason to change in over 4 years of use. I'm all for splitting up
services but those two go so nicely together I'm wondering why you want to
do what you're doing.

 AH HAH!
 Bingo.
I am willing to bet that is why we are using a different provider for
DNS than our registrar. So that we can switch registrars with no
 problems.
 Thanks!!!

Oh...and I was going to mention that I like using a dedicated provider
 for
DNS since it makes changing any other part of your hosting environment
easier - switching registrar, web host, etc. Not having to re-setup DNS
 when
those changes are made is nice.

I was going to mention using the registrar, as I do myself.  The ones
 that I
have used all have this.  It's just not enabled by default.

Re: Looking for a DNS provider

2007-12-28 Thread Jim McAtee
Good point. Splitting DNS service and registrar services offers limited
protection from bastard domain registrars. Because the registrar controls
the records that point to the DNS servers themselves. If you run into a
dispute with your registrar (like GoDaddy shutting down sites whenever
anyone asks) then they just point the nameservers at different DNS
servers. If they also control the DNS itself, they can do this
immediately vs. the 48 hour propogation time it may take to change NS
records at the registry. Small comfort.

More important is to stay away from unscrupulous domain registrars.
Tucows is one of the best, but try wrestling a domain away from GoDaddy.
I've dealt with the situation several times and it can be a nightmare.

Windows update icon missing

2007-12-28 Thread Leif Wahlberg
Hi Folks,

In my lab I have a workstation that was sitting turned off at a shelf for 3
months. The other day I needed it and started it up again.

Now, when I want to turn it off, it is showing me that there are pending
updates that will be installed when I click on Shut off.

However, there is no Update icon in the systray, so I cannot review what
updates are pending.

How can I fix this? Google gives me thousands of hits on missing icon, but
not what I am looking for.

Happy New Year to ya'll.

Leif
