Re: Browsing DFS space

2008-06-11 Thread Graeme Carstairs
You can use the Office 2007 ADM files in your GPO and add make the share the
default file location, it can also be added to the favourite links list on
the side of the file open dialogue box.

We do that here using \\domain name\share

Works like a charm.

In ADUC, right click the ou you want it in, pick new, shared folder.
Type the network path for your DFS path and give it a name. You can

Users open Network or My network places, Search AD. Change the find

I've got a Windows XPSP2 box I'm trying to add to my domain. When I go

example let's say the original addresses are 100.200.300.400 and
100.200.500.600 and I change them to 100.200.400.300 and
100.200.600.700 then close the dialog and restart then open the dialog

the addresses shown are 100.200.300.400 and 100.200.500.600' I've
never seen this before. Any ideas what's happening?

Hi all, I have been to a new site where they are using IBM system storage
DS4700 storage arrays.
I'm not that familiar with IBM kit and their website seems somewhat circular,
but from what I can see
it's just a disk array with a bit of resilience built in.

Does anyone know if the devices require IBM disks? Or if there's a good reason
to use them over standard disks?
Purchasing tells me that IBM disks are at least 600% more expensive that the
average SATA disk.
So, if it will work and there's no good reason not to, I was considering using
different disk drives.

Thanks all, Stu.

If you're interested in Sunbelt's new antivirus + antispyware product

Please send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] and put VIPRE
Enterprise (SVE) in the title in order to register for the beta.

At VIPRE's core is an antivirus and antispyware engine that merges the
detection of all types of malware into a single efficient and powerful
system. The new technology was developed exclusively by Sunbelt, without
building on older generation antivirus engines. VIPRE Enterprise
utilizes a high speed threat scanning engine that can scan large volumes
of information for malware threats in a short period of time with
limited performance impact on the end user's PC. VIPRE Enterprise uses
multiple techniques to inspect the characteristics of all types of
potentially threatening files. From simple signature-based detection to
dynamic, sophisticated analysis of malware files, VIPRE quickly
determines whether a file is good or bad - enabling comprehensive
detection of both existing and new unidentified threats.

VIPRE Enterprise is designed to replace both your antivirus and
antispyware desktop applications. However, it is not recommended during
the beta to do a full production rollout (for obvious reasons).

Once you've registered for the beta, you will be given access to the
beta forum, which has more information on the product's functionality,
as well as known issues, etc.

Disabling protection didn't do it but killing services did.
I repackage the install client and redeployed on some test boxes.
So far so good.
It is still disabled on DCs for now.
I will work on this after vacation - I only installed on DC's because
the 10x was not getting updates.
I should of repaired old 10x instead of just upgrading - hind sight
20/20
Test groups reported no errors except spooler issues - fixed.

Project was going in full swing after vacation, but I am going to backup
and regroup and redeploy clients to test groups.
Pull off dc's and redeploy 10.x

I will double check and make sure I am only installing
antivirus/spyware. Set Liberal rules on servers(allowing disabling) and
thanks to one person, excluding scans on AD directories.

are the dongles used with KVM-over-IP devices universal? for example, is it

Another logon script question

2008-06-11 Thread EricB
Good afternoon,

I just took over net admin responsibilities at a small company running an NT
4.0 domain. They were in the middle of setting up a 2003 Active Directory
domain when I started, and I'm trying to finalize setup before migrating.

My problem right now is I can not get logon scripts to execute.

I am logging on from an XP box connected to the proper domain. The script is
located on the 2003 DC in the netlogon share. I can execute the script from
the client via UNC, running \\servername\netlogon\logon.vbs
file:///\\servername\netlogon\logon.vbs . I am trying to enter this path in
the User Profile section under the user's properties. Do UNC paths work here?

Any ideas what I might be missing?

Thanks,

Eric

Re: OT: stupid kvm question

2008-06-11 Thread wjh
I would not think that they would actually work with another
manufacturer. In fact, we have a couple of raritan KVMs and I had to
order a different sku model dongles just to connect to SUN boxes rather
than any of our other servers, so that makes me think there must be some
specific processing going on rather than simply passing info along to
the head unit.

I don't believe they are universal.
In the case of my Avocent KVM, the dongles have firmware on them, and
communicate back to the head unit.

Yes, Symantec's attitude stinks. As does the usability of the admin
console. And the size of it's footprint, which is positively Yeti-esque.
But I think this is a debate that's been seen a few times before, and it
usually ends in one word - NOD32.

In most cases, where there's no good reason to do otherwise, use the default
locations as your standard. When another admin has to follow-up on your
work, they won't have to learn the things you needlessly customized.

So yes, it's the best place. And it's replicated.

Thanks,

Eric

Where's the best place to put that? I've been putting it in a DFS

In most cases, where there's no good reason to do otherwise, use the
 default
locations as your standard. When another admin has to follow-up on
 your
work, they won't have to learn the things you needlessly customized.

So yes, it's the best place. And it's replicated.

 VBscript,
I was going to use the IfMember utility from the Resource Kit.
What I'm drawing a blank on is where to copy the utility so that
it

I

We are running some scheduling software from TS. It would be great if people

etc. through a group policy governing my TS group?

Utility to show details of installed printers?

2008-06-11 Thread Michael . Leone
I'm migrating a print server from Win2000 to Win2003. I'm not using the
Print Migrator tool, because some of the installed drivers are old. So I'm
just going to re-create the printer definitions (taking the opportunity to
properly name them, according to our now-standard conventions). Anyway,
what I could use is a report, listing current printer name, printer model
(or driver, which should tell me the same thing), and IP address. That at
least would help me in installing new printers and drivers on my Win2003
server.

Anyone know of something that dumps those sorts of details about installed
printers?

Thanks

Win2k3 and XP have a couple of pr*.vbs files in %systemroot% that will
help with this. Prnmngr.vbs will let you list installed printers and it
will give you driver name and port name. There is a prnport.vbs that
will give you all the details on the ports as well.

That's the link, as I see it, anyway, in My Network Places.
 \SYSVOL\sysvol\example.com\SCRIPTS doesn't resolve to anything

Sysvol uses junction points to manage a single instance store. Junction points
are also referred to as reparse points (directory junctions and volume mount
points).

If you dir a drive mapped to \\shortname\netogon you can see this clearly in a
command prompt represented as Junction ad.domain.name

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=324175 explains it fairly well.

We do have that set up in our audit policy, and the logon was indeed a
528; the problem was that the guy didn't use his own account. He also
had no business doing what he did. Luckily the terminal services logon
event provided the ip address that connected, so we were able to track

The default.rdp will help, but for future, you probably need to set a GPO to
audit logon events. If this already exists, just look on the security log for
the event. (I think it is 528, but from memory so not positive)

Subject: RDP question

RDP question for everyone - is there a file on the client (log or other file
type) that shows a client's most recent rdp sessions? When I click on my
remote desktop connection, it always shows me my the name of the last server I
RDP'd into, but I am looking to see if that is stored somewhere on the local
computer. We had some inappropriate activity using a service account and don't
yet have enough information to prove that a certain person did something they
should not have. The more information I can obtain, the better. The client
was XP Pro SP2, if that helps any. I have viewed the event logs on the server
they logged into, and it unfortunately does not provide the computer name that
connected to it, just the IP address. I want irrefutable proof, and this, in
combination with the DHCP logs, does not quite provide that. I have been
unable to find anything yet in Google using multiple different search strings.

Thanks,

James Winzenz

Re: RDP question

2008-06-11 Thread James Rankin
We have our service accounts set via GPO so that they can't log on
interactively or via RDP. However some (admittedly poor) software goes
belly-up without the Interactive Logon right

On 11/06/2008, James Winzenz [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

We do have that set up in our audit policy, and the logon was indeed a
528; the problem was that the guy didn't use his own account. He also had
no business doing what he did. Luckily the terminal services logon event
provided the ip address that connected, so we were able to track it down to
the person who did it and report them. As to what happens now, anyone's
guess. I highly doubt he will be fired, although if it were me, that is
what I would recommend, due to the nature of the account he used and the
actions he took. At least we are going to be able to get rid of another
 generic account . . .

Opening Ports via GPO

2008-06-11 Thread James Edwards
I'm opening ports using GPO's. In the Allow Printer and File Sharing
you can specify which subnets to allow contact from. The example shows
10.3.2.0/24 to allow connections from 10.3.2.X. My question is what
would be the proper notation to allow connections from 10.3.x.x. Would
it be 10.3.0.0\24?

Re: Opening Ports via GPO

2008-06-11 Thread Klint Price - ArizonaITPro

no, the /24 means the last 255 digits in the last octet

if you want to allow everything in the last two octets, it would be
10.3.0.0/16

Play around with www.subnet-calculator.com for more info.

RE: Executing programs from a login script

2008-06-11 Thread Ken Schaefer
a) Use DFS share for MSIs installed from GPOs

b) If you have an AD domain, then use startup/login scripts configured in GPOs,
not in the user account properties of AD. The scripts are stored in the GUID
folder named for each GPO, not in the NetLogon share. You can store the actual
executables on a DFS share. The executables will then be replicated according
to your file replication policies to your nominated file servers, not to DCs
(which I think gives you more flexibility)

Cheers

 Thanks.

What about managed software that AD pushes out when a system boots up?
Where's the best place to put that? I've been putting it in a DFS
 share.

In most cases, where there's no good reason to do otherwise, use the
  default
locations as your standard. When another admin has to follow-up on
  your
work, they won't have to learn the things you needlessly customized.

So yes, it's the best place. And it's replicated.

I think you're thinking of the one where you copy it to the

share. Then, you can access it using syntax like:

%0\..\ifmember.exe dostuff

The NETLOGON share! That was what I was trying to think of

I've only tried this in the old-style logon scripts (assigned on
  the
user accounts). I think the %0\..\ means look in the current
 path,

But what would the current path be? The current path of the
  workstation
   executing the login script?

so maybe with a newer-style script you just put it in the same
location as the .bat/.cmd/.vbs file that runs it?

I think the share name would be

   \\DC-Name\SYSVOL\DOMAIN-NAME\

Thanks for the reminder ... I'll poke at it a bit ...

I know I should know the answer to this, but I'm old, and it's too
hot (it's 100F here in Philadelphia at the moment). Anyway, in my
Win2000 AD, I want to execute a login script for a particular OU.
And in this login script, I want to check group memberships and
 map
drive letters accordingly. Not being all that confident in
  VBscript,
I was going to use the IfMember utility from the Resource Kit.
What I'm drawing a blank on is where to copy the utility so that
 it
is accessible at login time. I want to call it from the SYSVOL
share, don't I? Where would I copy the EXE to, what path, so that
 I
can execute it from the login script?
