Internet Proxy settings - setting remotly.

2008-10-06 Thread Gavin Wilby
Hi Guys,

I have implemented a Web Marshall proxy at a small site of mine, Im not
always there and so I need a tool that I can install on the server that will
allow me to check that the proxy settings for IE have been set correctly.

The settings are policied out, but due to the amount of traffic going across
the proxy, Im not entirly sure that the settings have taken.

So I need a little network tool that will connect to every machine on the
LAN (about 30) and tell me what IE uses as a proxy.

Gavin.

It's just a couple of registry entries. You can check them using RegRead.

Tools for auditing Windows security logs

2008-10-06 Thread Steve Burkett
Hi guys,

Anyone got any recommendations for creating audit reports out of Windows
2003 security event logs?

I know of GFI's Events Manager, and I might take a look at the offerings
from Secure Vantage Technologies which wedge in to Operations Manager
2007.

Anyone got any others?

Thanks for any tips!

Switched web hosting companies - what to do with DNS?

2008-10-06 Thread David Mazzaccaro

For example, this is what my DNS record looks like now with my current
web hosting company:
www.DOMAIN.com. 86400 IN A 123.123.123.123

My new hosting company wants me to use this:
www.DOMAIN.com. 86400 IN A
client123456.myregisteredsite.com

I assumed when I switched hosting companies that I would just get a new
IP address, not a virtual address.
They are telling me that they don't give out static addresses for web
sites anymore.
Is this the norm?

Thx

I think your new record will be:

www.DOMAIN.comfile:///\\www.DOMAIN.com. 86400 INCNAME
client123456.myregisteredsite.com

I am seeing that here and there and shouldn't really matter. Can save you some
grief in the long run if they re-arrange ip numbering or move your server they
can do it all and you won't see or have to do a thing.

Anybody know how to do an Offline Files Cache Synchronization from a command
line? Or - via a program?

What I want to do:

Run a script to remotely sync a user. Remotely add reg key to delete Offline
Folders cache:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\NetCache]
FormatDatabase=dword:0001

-- Change GPO to change location of Offline Files. Refresh GPO settings
(GPUPDATE /FORCE)

Remotely reboot.

I know I can add the key remote using reg add \\workstation\key, and force
the GPO update, and the reboot. But how do I have the script do a sync first?

Thanks

BTW ... ideally, this would be in a CMD script, but I can execute that part by
calling a VBS script, if need be.

Well, disregarding all the interactive prompting:

First I'd probably remotely execute %SYSTEMROOT%\SYSTEM32\MOBSYNC
/LOGOFF, using something like PSEXEC from SysInternals, probably
(doesn't appear that you can MOBSYNC a remote PC).

Then:
reg add \\%host%\HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\NetCache
/v FormatDatabase /t REG_DWORD /d 1
reg query \\%host%\HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\NetCache
/s

(%host% being the IP address or hostname of the system to affect)

Next, refresh the GPO with either a remote execution of GPUPDATE /FORCE
or SECEDIT /REFRESHPOLICY USER_POLICY /ENFORCE
(we still have a lot of Windows 2000 machines, so we'd have to check the
OS by looking at .. something I haven't figured out yet :-))

Last, I'd remotely reboot, again using PSSHUTDOWN.

Haven't had time to fully flesh this out, but my co-worker has the
scripted parts of adding the reg keys working ...

Thanks, and HTH

New Drives for Proliant ML310 G2

2008-10-06 Thread Jim Majorowicz
I've got a customer that is using SBS 2003 Premium (Fully Patched) on a
Proliant ML310 G2 with 80 GB SATA drives that is running out of space. The
server is using non-hot plug drives with the onboard SATA controller in a
RAID-1. This controller can only support 2 drives in this configuration, so
I went to replace these drives with a pair of 250 GB drives and ran into a
problem.

I used Directory Services Restore Mode, and followed all the procedures in
the Microsoft SBS Restore procedure. I even remembered to review the Report
for short file name problems. However the damn thing still managed to blue
screen on restart:

PROCESS1_INITALIZATION_FAILED

Stop 0x6B (0xC07A, 0xB, 0x0, 0x0)

I figured it was something to do with that damn RAID controller, so I tried
repairing the OS (Boot from CD, Install (not Recovery), Repair Existing) and
made it worse.

I seem to recall that this stupid controller would cause problems like this.
What do I need to do to get around this problem?

  looks handy!

Which doesn't seem to work ... at least, not from executing it via PSEXEC
...

I run it; and it just comes back to a comand line. No dialog on the target
machine, etc.

SIGH A good idea, while it lasted ... perhaps callign it via the VB
method would work ... When I have enough time, I will try that ...

Insufficient information. Microsoft has loads of documents on
securing windows servers and they all have a basis in what are your
needs vs how secure your desire is.

Have you done the basics?
What is your environment? 5 or 500 servers?
How much money/administrative effort are you willing to spend/dedicate?
Do you have confidential information?

Secure in today's buzzword filled world means all to many things.
basic windows administrative practices and patch management and log
review to full out security review, data retention, backups, registry
templates .

We do a variety of things
Access control (global into local, local on the resource)
Test environment patching
Production environment patching
Log review
Test restores and off-site DR sessions
McAfee EPo and log reviews
System pruning from AD to dead systems beyond a certain date
System pruning from AD to dead accounts beyond a certain date
etc
etc

403.6 - Forbidden

2008-10-06 Thread Clayton Doige
Hi all. I have an SBS 2003 server which a home worker is connecting to via
VPN. When they attempt to access http://server/companyweb/default.aspx the
406.3 error is returned stating that the web site has a list of denied IP
.Addresses etc

I have killed that to allow all IP Addresses, and at the suggestion of one
of the google hits I found enabled basic authentication on the site.

Even after a reboot the 403.6 still comes up when accessing via the vpn
tunnel.

I noticed that the defaulo website has the ip address restrictions in place,
but then sites like /exchange don't and the exchange site loads for this
same user.

I was, after a couple fruitless hours of googling for myself, hoping
somebody can enlighten me as to what needs tweaking to get this working?

Thanks

Clayton

Ah, right ...sorry, obviously it would not be an Address... but rather
a CNAME.
Thanks
However - if I want a SSL (for an online store for example) - I
will need a static IP?

Yes. If this is a shared hosting account, don't be surprised if you're
expected to pay a monthly fee for a dedicated IP address.

I'd ignore the advice and just use an A record. If they're moving IP
addresses so often that you need to use a CNAME, find another host. One
thing you can't do, if you want the non-www name to work for the web
site, is use a CNAME:

This is _not_ allowed:

mydomain.com IN CNAME xyz.someothername.com
www.mydomain.com IN CNAME xyz.someothername.com

But this is:

mydomain.com IN A 111.222.333.444
www.mydomain.com IN CNAME xyz.someothername.com

There's not much reason to do this. It doesn't make maintenance any
easier.

You can use the Symantec Clean wipe utility on PCs that removes anything SAV on

I wrote a basic script which looks for SAV and does a silent removal then
installs VIPRE (our new AV of choice). I have it look for several versions of

be removed silently in that there is a prompt somewhere that must be answered

#What's the best text editor out there for writing code and scripts

and such?

I'd like to find
#one that does line numbering obviously, and does some formatting to

keep

things neat.
#Like color coding expressions, functions, etc. I'm trying to learn
JavaScript, and using
#Notepad and Dreamweaver are proving difficult.

JEdit.

RE: Symantec NetBackup vs Iron Mountain's Connected Backup/PC

2008-10-06 Thread Paul Muhlbach
It's not often I chime in on these topics. I must say my experience watching
Symantec purchase other companies is the same as Micheal's.
Central Point Software - Great - till Symantec killed it.
Veritas - great company - then Symantec buys it.
Lastly - Powerquest. Is Symantec truly doing anything about imaging for Vista?
How about partition changes? They may be, I haven't looked too hard. Yet, I
can't say I am that thrilled.

I still have them for Antivirus. Yet, I wonder sometimes, if I should be
re-evaluating soon. I believe there is a new product from Sunbelt grin.

Paul

Well, my problem is with the company itself; and what they do to
perfectly good pieces of software over time. In that respect I no
longer consider them trustworthy.

But, I know you've heard this all before.

Haha, actually I thought the netbackup was decent as a standalone piece.

 Guys,

Do any of you have any experience with the two products? How do they
compare for laptop/desktop backups? Also how does Altiris Recovery
Solution
compare to both products and are there any other products you can
recommend
over either Symantec or Iron Mountain for PC Backups?

Just looking for information on this.

 Thanks

Comparing NT Backup speeds

2008-10-06 Thread HELP_PC

In a network 10/100/1000 copper a NT backup of the complete server to a
Qnap device RAID-1 takes about 9 hours with verify (about 50GB) versus
DAT-72 with separate card that takes half the time .
Should be considered normal ?

TIA
