 Biggest. Spam Scam. Ever.

A few years ago, MIT purchased an anti-spam solution from Barracuda, a firm
 specializing in network security products.

I just received an email on one of The Tech's mailing lists about how email
from The Tech's mail server are being rejected by the Barracuda Spam
Filters. I've edited the message, but goes something like this:

  Forwarded Message
From: Mail Delivery System [EMAIL PROTECTED]
 To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: Mail delivery failed: returning message to sender
 Date: Mon, 1 Jan 2008 00:00:00 -

This message was created automatically by mail delivery software.

A message that you sent could not be delivered to one or more of its
recipients. This is a permanent error. The following address(es) failed:

 [EMAIL PROTECTED]
SMTP error from remote mail server after RCPT TO:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:
 host W92-130-BARRACUDA-3.mit.edu [18.7.21.224]:
554 Service unavailable; Client host [18.187.1.1] blocked using Barracuda
 Reputation; http://bbl.barracudacentral.com/q.cgi?ip=18.187.1.1

Following the link, you're taken to a page where you're asked to fill out a
form (which includes a CAPTCHA) in order to verify that you're not spamming
 people.

Were this where things had ended, I would have forgotten this whole thing.
While I don't necessarily think requiring people to fill out a quick form is
the best way to fight spam, its certainly not completely unreasonable to ask
them to do it once in a while. Extra kudos if they can use some sort of
certificate, signature, etc to bypass it.

However, what follows is one of the most perverted uses of technology and
diabolically brilliant business plans I have ever witnessed.

Lets assume you'd like to avoid being caught by this spam filter in the
future. Barracuda allows you to register with EmailReg.org , an
'organization' which maintains a list of domains and the IP address of their
associated mail server. To sweeten the pot, they allow anyone to query their
database for free in order verify the authenticity of an email.

Many of you are scratching your heads, so let me provide an example. Lets
say that you run Google.com. You register with EmailReg.org and tell them,
'Any email that comes from google.com will have to come from one of our SMTP
servers. Their IP addresses are 1.2.3.4 and 9.8.7.6'. This means that an
email which claims to be from [EMAIL PROTECTED] that didn't come from those IP
address probably isn't actually from someone who works at Google and can
probably be marked as spam. (Note that identity verification is a big part
of spam protection, since spammers often pretend to be someone else, in an
attempt to hide how much mail they're sending.)

What a great idea right? Spam protection that works and is transparent to
 users?

Until you realize that they charge $20 to register your domain. Per year.

Effectively, this means that you have to pay $20 per year to send email to
people on domains that use this service to verify email authenticity. This
wouldn't be that big of a deal if EmailReg was the definitive source for
this information, or if they had some new and brilliant technology, or if
there weren't any other good solutions. Instead, EmailReg is nobody, their
product is a whitelist (albeit with two parameters – domain and IP), and
there are a hundred other, perfectly viable anti-spam techniques. Somehow,
they've managed to get a major corporation (Baracuda) on board and they're
now gouging people to send e-mail – something which is supposed to be free.

I salute the businessman who came up with this idea and the salesman who got
 Barracuda on board.

 Beyond that, I'm furious.

V2P?

I know it is easy enough to do a P2V conversion, but is there any way you
can go the other way? I have a load of cloned VMWare guests that are all

you be able to get the hardware devices detected correctly? Does anyone know

RE: Barracuda and EmailReg.Org

2008-10-29 Thread Kennedy, Jim
It does more than that. Passing an SPF test will not stop your message from
being blocked by a Bays filter for example. SPF is just one test. What the
'Cuda whitelist will do is just that, whitelist you past all the other tests,
assuming the admin that runs the Cuda as the Barracuda Reputation Service
turned on and set to whitelist.

I certainly don't. My definition of a whitelist is different that Barracuda's.
For example Cuda has Constant Contact whitelisted through this service. I only
whitelist trusted senders that never send spam. Constant Contact is certainly
anti-spam but their customers sometimes fool them and a spam run or two sneaks
through. So Constant Contact is not someone that never sends spam, thus they
shouldn't be whitelisted imho.

I can't wait until March when my service contract is up with them and I can
replace this PoS.

And be forewarned if you have a Cuda and use the reputation service to block
with. They are doing intentional collateral damage. It is Unannounced and you
are unable to look it up on their lookup form. Not good, not good at all.

Professional is designed specifically for the SBS market. If you are
planning on ever deploying more than 30 phones or not in an SBS
environment or want MDS, you should always just go with Enterprise on
its own box, even if it's just an old used PC.

How to tell where a user is logged in?

2008-10-29 Thread jond
I've got a sys admin who's leaving his super user account logged in
over night. I would like to find out WHERE he's doing this before I
talk to him.
Is there a way to find out what server or computer a user account is logged in?

I guess I could pull the security log files off all the servers and
write a script to parse them.
There's probably an easier way?

Thanks in advance,
Jon

Wait a sec - the event showing when the account was created (624) should
contain information on who created the account. Likewise with the
password set, which would be a 628. When we change the local admin

performed the action. See below for an example - I just created a test
account on my workstation and got the below event ID 624.

Event Type:Success Audit

2008-10-29 Thread Ziots, Edward
James is correct,

Also I would look to implement a restricted Groups GPO which will rip
any accounts you don't want in the local administrators, Power Users and
any other Local or Global Groups that are sensitive in nature.

You should see the eventlogs light up each time the GPO is applied if
someone or something has put an extra user in your local administrators
group.

Now for the 64M dollar question,

Do you know if you are currently having a penetration test or security
testing on your farm going on that your bosses didn't tell you was going
on. I have ran into that once before, but Id side on the cautious side
and check your other systems and see if something larger isn't in store.

I've got a sys admin who's leaving his super user account logged in

Is there a way to find out what server or computer a user account is

I guess I could pull the security log files off all the servers and
write a script to parse them.
There's probably an easier way?

RE: Blackberry question

Jim,

Are you saying that the connection between BB device and the server is
different through Professional than it is with the Enterprise?
Specifically, one of my questions was whether there was an RDP client
for BB, and Malcom answered that there was, and there was no need for
VPN because of the MDS connection. So are you saying that I wouldn't be
able to RDP if I use the Professional? We do not run SBS here, and
never will. But I'd rather not spend for the Enterprise if I can do the
same stuff with Professional. Right now we have maybe 10 WM users, and
if we went to BB, they would be moved over to BB. I can't foresee ever
needing more than 30 licenses.

I know it is easy enough to do a P2V conversion, but is there any way you can
go the other way? I have a load of cloned VMWare guests that are all deployed
from a template, and now I need this template to be deployed to a single
physical Dell PE 2950. Is this possible? Thinking about it, how would you be
able to get the hardware devices detected correctly? Does anyone know of any
possible way this could be done?

We are mostly in a purchasing freeze for new projects. Existing projects get
to move forward though. I was just told by the owner to try and negotiate
all software purchases with the software vendors, his thought being that
they have a margin that can be sliced.

However, we are more focused on the 9.5% cut in reimbursement that Medicare

Has anyone seen this issue?

Users log in, and the login script says 'net use h: /home' which should send
them to \\server\users\username, per their AD attribute. However, what
happens is that they map to \\server\users instead. It will also happen if you
drop to a command prompt and type the same net use line there. You can always
manually map to the deeper UNC without issue (so it's not an NTFS ACL issue).
It seems to happen more frequently to laptop users than desktop users.

Wayne

Specifically, one of my questions was whether there was an RDP client

VPN because of the MDS connection. So are you saying that I wouldn't be
able to RDP if I use the Professional? We do not run SBS here, and

You should go with Pro for now, even if things change down the road and you
need more than 30 CALs you can do a trade-up later. The software is the same
and just needs a new key to allow for more users.

*Beyond 30 users*
To expand your deployment beyond 30 users, you can upgrade to BlackBerry
Enterprise Server by purchasing a BlackBerry(R) Enterprise Server Trade-up
Key. You can purchase the upgrade key through your wireless service provider
or online from the BlackBerry
Storehttps://www.blackberry.com/purchaseonline/main.jsp.

Users log in, and the login script says 'net use h: /home' which should
send them to \\server\users\username, per their AD attribute. However,
what happens is that they map to \\server\users instead. It will also
happen if you drop to a command prompt and type the same net use line
there. You can always manually map to the deeper UNC without issue (so
it's not an NTFS ACL issue). It seems to happen more frequently to
laptop users than desktop users.

we have done that with migrations from 2550s to 2950s to remain in support

Citrix XenApp (Presentation Server) client issue

2008-10-29 Thread Tom Miller
Hi Folks:

For those of you using Citrix: Recently both of my Citrix web interface sites
started prompting for user ID and password when the ICA client needs to be
updated or installed. Previously the user just selected the download button,
the client was pulled from one of the Citrix servers, and the install
proceeded. I recenlty applied the MS out-of-band patch, but I'm not sure if
that had anything to do with it.

Suggestions? I am thinking it has something to do with the security settings
on the \client\ica directory for web users, but don't want to change any
settings unless I really need to do so.

RE: Blackberry question

2008-10-29 Thread Malcolm Reitz
Hmm, the product I used was called Rove Mobile Desktop and it was just a
stand-alone RDP client for the Blackberry handheld - no server side
software was involved. I just looked at the Rove site and it has
completely changed. It seems they have bundled everything in to the
Mobile Admin package and won't sell the individual pieces any longer,
which is not making some customers happy
http://www.berryreview.com/2008/09/25/rant-whats-up-with-rove-mobile/
. Too bad.

The only other RDP client I know of is the TSMobiles one available at
www.rdmplus.com. I'm looking at the eval version right now and it looks
pretty decent. The price is about $45.

Is there any gain in performance if you have a single (NTFS) drive in

I say no but it wouldn't be the first time I've been wrong.

Hi Folks:

For those of you using Citrix: Recently both of my Citrix web
interface sites started prompting for user ID and password when the ICA
client needs to be updated or installed. Previously the user just
selected the download button, the client was pulled from one of the
Citrix servers, and the install proceeded. I recenlty applied the MS
out-of-band patch, but I'm not sure if that had anything to do with it.

Suggestions? I am thinking it has something to do with the security
settings on the \client\ica directory for web users, but don't want to
change any settings unless I really need to do so.

this year. We upgraded the whole shebang to AutoCAD/Revit 2009 suite which
aint cheap. Then we bought a few licenses of microstation v9(?). Then
upgraded a bunch of engineering apps for Vista (that was fun). We will prob
replace most of our real servers this year (5 PowerEdge's 29xx and 28xx's)
and move to Exch 2007 on VMWare ESX if I have my say. I am pretty much able
to ask for anything and get it within reason, and to ring my own bell thats
because I only ask for things that we can use. Heck last year I asked for
double take for our main file server and got it approved in minutes. Never
had to use it though. If I want I could show up at 5AM and leave at 10PM.
If anyone knows any experienced project manager types that could move to

You're all the admins who actually buy the stuff that people like Sunbelt (and
many, many others make). How are you seeing the recession impact your buying
decisions?

Are you being told to hold off until later? Is it business as usual? Or is
it a bloodletting? Are you still buying cheap stuff but not buying expensive
stuff? Etc., etc.

Maybe I'm opening the Pandora's Box here, but I think we need to all look at
the situation realistically.

Not much change here either (small, rural hospital, 92 bed). Our FY
began Oct so our capital purchases were already approved and money
allocated. Next year's capital budget will probably be a slash and

From the thread, I understand there is a principle here. However, why use
net use... in a script? OR, does filling in the Home directory space
in the user's AD Profile tab essentially make a script (which will not
run)?

I've never had any problems creating the directory
\\server\users\username, sharing it as \\server\username$, and
connecting that way...

Users log in, and the login script says 'net use h: /home' which

attribute. However, what happens is that they map to \\server\users
instead. It will also happen if you drop to a command prompt and
type the same net use line there. You can always manually map to the

to happen more frequently to laptop users than desktop users.

I dont know the books and am not given a formal budget to work with, so I

I work for a non-profit in New York that is relies heavily on state and
federal funding. We provide many services for people with disabilities.

We already got hit with a retroactive funding cut of a couple hundred
thousand dollars, and from what we can tell with NY forecasting extreme
cuts going forward we are going to in a real bind for 2009.

For the remainder of this year we are going ahead with purchases that
were already budgeted if they are critical but anything that is not
critical we are not purchasing. We expect to be in maintenance mode for
2009, buying only what we need to keep functioning.

Sorry for the confusion. I was thinking of an even smaller version they
don't have any more (I think they called it Executive or something, that was
free, stripped the MDS Integration and was specific to SBS only). I'm not
familiar with RDP clients. None of my customers have that need from their
phone. Professional would be fine for your needs especially if you install
it on a machine separate from your exchange. That way upgrading to
Enterprise when the time comes is just a matter of changing the registration
key.

Are you saying that the connection between BB device and the server is
different through Professional than it is with the Enterprise?
Specifically, one of my questions was whether there was an RDP client for
BB, and Malcom answered that there was, and there was no need for VPN
because of the MDS connection. So are you saying that I wouldn't be able to
RDP if I use the Professional? We do not run SBS here, and never will. But
I'd rather not spend for the Enterprise if I can do the same stuff with
Professional. Right now we have maybe 10 WM users, and if we went to BB,
they would be moved over to BB. I can't foresee ever needing more than 30
licenses.

I'd rather not spend for the Enterprise if I can do the same stuff with
Professional. Right now we have maybe 10 WM users, and if we went to BB,
they would be moved over to BB. I can't foresee ever needing more than 30
licenses.

Professional is designed specifically for the SBS market. If you are
planning on ever deploying more than 30 phones or not in an SBS environment
or want MDS, you should always just go with Enterprise on its own box, even
if it's just an old used PC.

I've noticed that as well. I would never ever install BES directly on my
Exchange server.

I note from that side-by-side that Professional is 'sized to run on email
server', which I thought was interesting...

Your execs sound like smart guys.

Here is a product comparison.

http://na.blackberry.com/eng/services/professional/#tab_tab_compare

Professional is essentially for smaller deployments. It's like BES SBS. It
won't support over 30 BB devices.

Can anyone tell me how the Blackberry Professional Software stacks up
against BES? I'm being asked to give a comparison between the WinMobile
devices we're using, and Blackberry devices. If the execs decide to go with
Blackberry against my recommendations, I'd prefer to go with the
Professional software, if it will meet our needs. I'm looking at the
Blackberry website currently, but would like to hear personal, real world
experiences, vs. the sales info on the site.

Thanks,

RE: Blackberry question

2008-10-29 Thread Martin Blackstone
I always have a problem with PPC RDP clients. I mean how do you manage a
server from a 2 LCD? It takes 5 minutes to pan down to the start button and
then you have to pan all over the place to do anything.

Crazy!!

That way upgrading to
Enterprise when the time comes is just a matter of changing the registration
key.

Jim,

Are you saying that the connection between BB device and the server is
different through Professional than it is with the Enterprise?
Specifically, one of my questions was whether there was an RDP client for
BB, and Malcom answered that there was, and there was no need for VPN
because of the MDS connection. So are you saying that I wouldn't be able to
RDP if I use the Professional? We do not run SBS here, and never will. But
