Subject: Seeing "DEL:" in replication messages

As some may remember, I am setting up a clone of my domain on a private virtual
switch in VMware ESX. And so far, it *seems* to be going well. I have a Win2000
parent/child domain; I was able to seize all the applicable FSMO roles, and the
servers know their roles (as shown by "dcdiag /v /test:knowsofroleholders", for
both parent and child domains). I have removed all other DCs references, using
a script I downloaded called "MetadataCleaner.VBS" and ADSIEDIT. I
followed:

"How to remove data in Active Directory after an unsuccessful domain controller
demotion",

And that all looks good - I see no references to the other DCs, using ADSIEDIT.
But when I do a "repadmin /showreps" (to make sure the 2 remaining DCs are
talking and replicating OK, I get this, on the parent domain:

 INBOUND NEIGHBORS ==

CN=Schema,CN=Configuration,DC=mydomain-info
WilsonPark\WDC001
DEL:31d1f718-0fd7-4ba1-9270-4fbacf9acbda (deleted DSA) via RPC
objectGuid: 2b2388d7-e553-435c-b53f-a18a14474724

WDC001 (working, or child, DC #1) is one of the DCs that I did delete, from
this testing version of my domain. And it does seem to know that I deleted it,
from the message. And later, I do see:

WilsonPark\WDC003 via RPC
objectGuid: 34a3f66b-148d-4336-bc47-9cf94b7edbff
Last attempt @ 2009-10-07 09:32.27 was successful.

So that tells me that replication is happening to the child domain.
Also, "replmon" shows only successful replications.

So: should I be worried about the fact that I still see all the deleted servers
in the "INBOUND NEIGHBORS" list? The "OUTBOUND NEIGHBORS" list is clean, and
shows only the 1 proper DC. Or is there something more I should be doing ?

Thanks

Hi Folks,

I seem to remember a few years back at another job, I had an "add-on" to MMC.
I don't recall if it was free or not, don't think it was Fazam. It allowed
remote tools to the PC/User from ADUC, and allows us to look at PC/server logs
from MMC. The remote tool would be nice since not everyone has access to
Configuration Manager here.

Any ideas?

RE: Adobe CS4

2009-10-07 Thread David Lum
Wow, that was unclear wasn't it?

CS4 server config:
Program Folder = C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe
Data folder = E:\Data

You'd think if Version Cue CS4 stores your projects there and you back up that
folder and its subfolders and you had to rebuild the CS4 server from scratch,
one could re-point CS4 to that data directory it would pick up all your old
projects. Aparently no. CS4 has another setting called "Backup Folder" and you
have to use *Adobe's* Version Cue backup feature (which cannot be automated) to
be able to recover the data. Our users of CS4 never used that "because we knew
the server was getting backed up". It's frustraing as hell to have 466GB of
data sitting there and have no apparent way of recovering it.

I am working with Adobe support but they have proven to be exceptionally slow.
Adobe support: "Ok we understand what your issue is, we'll need to escalate it
to Tier 2, a tech will call you within 48 hours". 48 hours later I e-mail
them. "We'll call you when we find a solution". 24 hours later "We have
escalated it to our tier 3 engineers and they'll call you when they find
something out...". This issue is important enough that I have C-level exec's
getting involved to tap their resources/connections to recover the data

$50 to anyone who can figure out how to recover the data :-)

The first part, WSUS, WUAU, and AD GP can give you. You have
options for what to push, when to push it, whether to require a
reboot, whether to immediately redo missed patch detections, whether
to allow users to defer a reboot, etc.

I can generally derive the later by looking at the reports in WSUS
for what patches are installed and what are pending. But we only have
a couple servers anyway, and servers don't get auto patched (we log in
to them and tell it to run), so there's usually no "half patched"
states to worry about.

(That said, "half patched" is generally an unreliable configuration,
so I'd suggest avoiding it in the first place.)

Anyone know specific applications that use this service? I see that it
is no longer supported in Server 2008, and disabled by default in Server
2003. I have it enabled and starting automatically on my 2003 boxes.

Patch management software question, again...

2009-10-07 Thread Joseph Heaton
Anyone know of a patch management software that will allow you to check a box
to NOT have the software reboot your machine, AND will also give you a report
of servers that needed a reboot but weren't rebooted?

McAfee = "dats" (.DAT files)
Symantec = "defs" (definitions)
Trend Micro = "patterns"

Jeans and a collared shirt here, although I think a Henley type shirt would be
ok, just no T-shirts. We're actually allowed to wear shorts if it's near, at,

I kinda miss my time working in a school district though, when I could wear
shorts pretty much all the time.

I have someone at our non-profit with a need to host web meetings or webinars
with anywhere from 15 to 50 attendees - mostly for providing instructions and
answering questions about a specific application they all use. The person
asking about this is concerned with cost, wants the ability to record sessions,

Anyone have any recommendations or opinions good or bad, on the different

I dont think that there is - but AFAIK the registry tweak is the same across
all versions of windows.

If its a mouseover issue, check this:

If you want to prevent any apps from stealing active window focus, try this

I seem to remember a few years back at another job, I had an "add-on" to MMC.
I don't recall if it was free or not, don't think it was Fazam. It allowed
remote tools to the PC/User from ADUC, and allows us to look at PC/server logs

Any ideas?

Hi Folks,

I seem to remember a few years back at another job, I had an "add-on"
to MMC. I don't recall if it was free or not, don't think it was Fazam.
It allowed remote tools to the PC/User from ADUC, and allows us to look
at PC/server logs from MMC. The remote tool would be nice since not
everyone has access to Configuration Manager here.

Any ideas?

IF you are auditing Account Logons on your DCs AND have "Interactive
logon: Require Domain Controller authentication" to unlock policy
applied to the system in question unlocks will be audited on the DC. The
policy setting requires a DC to unlock rather than cached credentials so
I'm sure you can imagine how that could be problematic.

I am pretty sure that XP can't audit the locking itself

SP2 cannot be installed to an offline image of Windows Server 2008

2009-10-07 Thread Christopher Bodnar
It took a while for me to find this, and I thought I'd pass it along to
anyone else that was thinking they could update their existing offline WIM
images:

The following scenarios are applicable to businesses that want to deploy
SP2 to multiple computers or deploy custom images, or both. We recommend
that you use the SP2 integrated DVD to install SP2. Although it is not
recommended, if you have custom Windows Server 2008 images that you want
to update, you can boot the Windows image, apply the service pack, and
then recapture the image. This online method is the only way to update
images with SP2; SP2 cannot be installed to or uninstalled from an offline
image of Windows Server 2008. You will need to obtain the latest version
of the Windows OPK or Windows AIK.

Here is the link:

  Not by default.

You can definitely configure it to log when the workstation is
unlocked. You have to enable logon auditing (SECPOL.MSC). It then
shows up in the "Security" log as a logon, with type 0x7 in the
description.

I'm not sure, but I don't think XP can log when a station is locked.
 I know Vista can.

W2K? I Thought you were doing this on 2003. Sounds like a symptom of

How Replication Metadata is Preserved in Windows Server 2003
The period of time during which the replication metadata of the NTDS
Settings object is maintained after Active Directory is removed from the
respective domain controller is determined by an attribute of the
Directory Service object (cn=Directory Service,cn=Windows
NT,cn=Services,cn=Configuration,dc=ForestRootDomainName). This
attribute, replTopologyStayOfExecution, has a default value of 14 days
and a maximum value of half the tombstone lifetime.

Subject: Seeing "DEL:" in replication messages

As some may remember, I am setting up a clone of my domain on a
private virtual switch in VMware ESX. And so far, it *seems* to be
going well. I have a Win2000 parent/child domain; I was able to seize
all the applicable FSMO roles, and the servers know their roles (as
shown by "dcdiag /v /test:knowsofroleholders", for both parent and
child domains). I have removed all other DCs references, using a
script I downloaded called "MetadataCleaner.VBS" and ADSIEDIT. I
followed:

"How to remove data in Active Directory after an unsuccessful domain
controller demotion",

And that all looks good - I see no references to the other DCs, using
ADSIEDIT. But when I do a "repadmin /showreps" (to make sure the 2
remaining DCs are talking and replicating OK, I get this, on the
parent domain:

 INBOUND NEIGHBORS ==

CN=Schema,CN=Configuration,DC=mydomain-info
WilsonPark\WDC001
DEL:31d1f718-0fd7-4ba1-9270-4fbacf9acbda (deleted DSA) via RPC
objectGuid: 2b2388d7-e553-435c-b53f-a18a14474724

WDC001 (working, or child, DC #1) is one of the DCs that I did delete,
from this testing version of my domain. And it does seem to know that
I deleted it, from the message.

So: should I be worried about the fact that I still see all the
deleted servers in the "INBOUND NEIGHBORS" list? The "OUTBOUND
NEIGHBORS" list is clean, and shows only the 1 proper DC. Or is there
something more I should be doing ?

Thanks

Seeing "DEL:" in replication messages

2009-10-07 Thread Michael Leone

 INBOUND NEIGHBORS ==

CN=Schema,CN=Configuration,DC=mydomain-info
WilsonPark\WDC001
DEL:31d1f718-0fd7-4ba1-9270-4fbacf9acbda (deleted DSA) via RPC
objectGuid: 2b2388d7-e553-435c-b53f-a18a14474724

WDC001 (working, or child, DC #1) is one of the DCs that I did delete,
from this testing version of my domain. And it does seem to know that
I deleted it, from the message.

So: should I be worried about the fact that I still see all the
deleted servers in the "INBOUND NEIGHBORS" list? The "OUTBOUND
NEIGHBORS" list is clean, and shows only the 1 proper DC. Or is there
something more I should be doing ?

Thanks
