Re: Weird folder redirection issue
I was thinking along the same sort of lines - there are an awful lot of issues linked to users needing Full Control on profile folders. The problem is once I grant Full Control they start removing and adding stuff from the standard desktop. I might have to have a rethink of my strategy :-( On 19 May 2010 18:43, Miller Bonnie L. mille...@mukilteo.wednet.edu wrote: Never seen that particular error, but we use a similar structure, except that the desktop and my documents both go to a non-shared area in the same subfolder. So for example, if the folder is redirected to \\stafffiles\stafffolder\, it should create the desktop folder underneath. Re: mid-tower cases
Wow - what timing for this thread. A family member just brought his HP over. Said itjust died one day with a popping sound. I checked it out and had to replace the power supply. While looking inside the thing, you couldn't even see through the heat sink fins under the fan due to solidified dust build up. The thing smells like the inside of a vacuum cleaner bag ;) I believe this one fried it's power supply and is running hot due to the dirt blocking airflow. Anyway, the moral of the post is that I would definitely suggest you clean the dust out if it's built up in there. RE: Weird folder redirection issue
Yeah-the way we got around that was to implement an extremely restrictive quota (WS03 R2+ has FSRM built in, schema extensions for R2 required.) on that folder. It's not perfect, but does a pretty good job of keeping things clean. First use the FSRM tool to see how much space it is using, and then start locking down until nothing can be added. IIRC, 100kb is a good starting point, but I think you can go smaller, depending on how much stuff you are putting up there. When we used this method with kids a few years back we left room to create a few shortcuts, and that was it. -Bonnie From: James Rankin [mailto:kz2...@googlemail.com] Sent: Thursday, May 20, 2010 12:08 AM To: NT System Admin Issues Subject: Re: Weird folder redirection issue I was thinking along the same sort of lines - there are an awful lot of issues linked to users needing Full Control on profile folders. Re: Cannot access shares on a server
I can remember an instance many years ago where share and NTFS permissions on one of our file servers simply stopped working. I remember applying the latest Windows Service Pack to fix this (IIRC, it was Windows NT4 SP5, and it contained some sort of NTFS update). In these situations where perms seem to be not behaving as intended, I'd be tempted to install all the latest updates and/or reinstall the file server role. It sounds like DHCP would be the way to go with the majority of our servers, excluding the infrastructure servers. With that said, it's probably a change that will occur through attrition rather than changing our current method all at once. The main reason for that is our network services department wants us to change the subnets our servers currently reside on to further segment stuff. We've got way too much work on our plates to investigate changing the addresses on all of our servers so that will already be a slow transition. In the meantime, a co-worker and I put together what we hope is a functional VB script that will make the necessary changes to the existing WINs and DNS settings. For an environment like you describe, with hundreds of servers, I would recommend DHCP for all but critical network infrastructure servers. I'd use manual configuration for anything serving DHCP, DNS, WINS, or Active Directory. Everything else, DHCP, with reservations. Just to be clear: DHCP does not have to mean a dynamic IP address. You can statically assign an IP address via a DHCP reservation. And there are tools to help you do things like automatically provision the reservations, based on name or MAC address or whatever. I've heard mention of not using DHCP to prevent DHCP broadcasts but with a properly designed lease interval, I can't imagine the DHCP traffic being that much of burden on today's networks As ME2 says, it really depends on the environment, but I would generally agree. You'll already be needing infrastructure to support DNS, prolly Active Directory, possibly WINS, Window Updates, etc., etc. If DHCP is going to push you over the edge you're already way too close to the edge. :) The one thing you *may* notice is a surge in broadcast traffic after rebooting or starting a large group of servers -- say, after a software update, or a long power outage. In general, though, you're already going to be seeing that due to ARP and maybe NetBIOS registration. So again, if this is a problem you're likely already experiencing it. The usual solution is to stagger reboot/startup. -- Ben ~ Finally, powerful endpoint security that ISN'T a resource hog! ~ ~ http://www.sunbeltsoftware.com/Business/VIPRE-Enterprise/ ~ ~ Finally, powerful endpoint security that ISN'T a resource hog! ~ ~ http://www.sunbeltsoftware.com/Business/VIPRE-Enterprise/ ~

Remote Desktop Management for School Environment
Hey list, I have been charged with looking for a good remote desktop support solution for our District. While I'm about to start my googlefu for solutions, I figure it wouldn't hurt for a little wisdom from the crowd about various solutions. Currently, we use DameWare Mini Remote Control. DameWare is an excellent tool, but doesn't do everything we want it to do. Here's what we _need_: * Remote Control (Without asking permission) * Remote Viewing (Hopefully without the user knowing we're viewing) * View Thumbnails of a group of computers (what's missing in DameWare) Here's what we _want_: * Remote install of software/running of scripts. * Who's logged in? * A sortable/searchable list of computers. * Remote system inventory (CPU, memory, HD, software optional) * Support for Windows, Mac (and maybe Linux.) * ...And features we're not even thinking of, but we probably want. (Basically, we want the functionality of Apple Remote Desktop on our Windows desktops. As I don't see Apple making an ARD client for Windows anytime soon, we need to see what else is out there.) Price is a factor in our decision making, but we're willing to look at any solution which provides what we need. Any recommendations you guys can give, or solutions we should probably avoid, are appreciated. --Matt Ross Ephrata School District ~ Finally, powerful endpoint security that ISN'T a resource hog! ~ ~ http://www.sunbeltsoftware.com/Business/VIPRE-Enterprise/ ~

~ ~ http://www.sunbeltsoftware.com/Business/VIPRE-Enterprise/ ~ ~ Finally, powerful endpoint security that ISN'T a resource hog! ~ ~ http://www.sunbeltsoftware.com/Business/VIPRE-Enterprise/ ~ ~ Finally, powerful endpoint security that ISN'T a resource hog! ~ ~ http://www.sunbeltsoftware.com/Business/VIPRE-Enterprise/ ~

Spelling error on license?
Curious. Just got a great deal on a copy of Server 2008, almost too good to be true. Holograms on disc are fine, the license has the hologram thread passing thru the paper, irregular shaped holes, all looks fine. But reading the Client Access License paper, at the very bottom, there's an obvious spelling error. ...information about Mictosoft's tefund policies. RE: Idle question?
Eh.it depends. The limits that Rod quoted are accurate - for Windows Explorer and anything that uses the .NET framework. Changing the Win32 API is not done lightly. However, from the venerable cmd.exe (or in any native compiled language) you can prefix anything with \\?\ and get up to 32,767 bytes supported in your path (with up to 255 characters per path component). This has been true forever. Since around Vista, though, these are Unicode, so the actual path limit is about half that in characters. So, c:\temp\file.txt becomes \\?\c:\temp\file.txt etc. in absurdium. A pretty good coverage of this topic is found here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa365247(VS.85).aspx Raymond Chen has covered various pieces of this puzzle on his blog several times. Single Live Comm Server 2005 upgrade to OCS 2007
All the deployment documentation involves much more complicated Live Communication Server setups with multiple directors, etc. I have a single Live Communication Server 2005 server which is used 99.9% for IM only. We need to move to Office Communication Server 2007. Currently I don't need more than a single server as the main use will remain just IM, but we will add other services soon. Has someone performed a simple upgrade like this? Is it just as simple as installing OCS 2007 and moving the users? Or do I need to do a more complicated install with multiple OCS 2007 servers with different roles? -- Bob Fronk b...@btrfronk.com ~ Finally, powerful endpoint security that ISN'T a resource hog! ~ ~ http://www.sunbeltsoftware.com/Business/VIPRE-Enterprise/ ~

Non AD integrated DNS
In one of the projects the ADDC (win2k3) is heavily used and to buy the time, thinking to offload the DNS to standalone member server. This new server than hold DHCP/WINS and DNS offloading exclusive authentications to DC. Is there any disadvantage of running standalone DNS (NON AD integrated); apart from security.
