A OneNote device

2011-01-20 Thread Oliver Marshall
Hi

I want a device on which to use OneNote in meetings. Only needs to do that and
browsing the web. Nothing more. So clearly Windows is a must.

There's an iPad/iPhone app that allows you to read and make basic changes to a
onenote file but it's early days so I'm ruling out that at the moment.

Other than a Tablet PC can anyone recommend any other solution? There's one or
two Atom based tablet out that claim to run Windows but the reviews are
shocking.

Anyone doing the same with something interesting and want to share their
results and thoughts?

Olly

Yep. As I said, the user was completely down. Her email crashed as soon as

with Adobe Creator. So, I grabbed the highest rated (by both users and CNET

RE: Java JRE update MSI

2011-01-20 Thread Mike Gill
Run the installer to the first screen. Don't choose next. Go to the folder
and get the .msi file and the data1.cab, you don't need anything else and
copy them to wherever your deploying from. Now cancel/exit the installer.
The .msi doesn't install any toolbar either, even though the exe has it in
it.

Subject: Java JRE update MSI

Greetings!

Wishing to force Java JRE updates on my users (they sort-of update
automatically, but the user must click the icon to get the update to run),
I've been looking up how to get an .MSI file for the latest JRE version.

Unfortunately, the Java web site does not seem to work...

http://www.java.com/en/download/help/msi_install.xml

This tells you to download and run the .EXE file. It then says where the
.MSI has been extracted. This much is true. However, if I finish the
install, then the .MSI file gets deleted. If I abort the process, the .MSI
files gets deleted. If I pause the process, then the .MSI file is either
"locked" so it can't be copied elsewhere, or if it copies it becomes
non-functional.

The referenced web site has a "Get Help Now!" button. That brings one to a
pay-to-play chat session, "Most problems cost about $50 to fix." Nice...

Anyway, the version to which we currently wish to force our systems is Java
6 Update 23. Any successful methods to extract the .MSI for that version?

Thanks!

RE: Forcing Adobe Reader and Java updates

2011-01-20 Thread Terry Dickson
I like your solution, however last year during a security audit we were written
up for Java. Specifically before a certain level of Java the installer would
not remove the older versions. They show up in add and remove programs, and
that is what I was written up for. Then older versions have security flaws and
unless removed are still there to potentially cause problems. Now I am not
sure if what I was being told was correct, and since a certain level the older
versions are removed so it is no longer a problem for me as far as the security
audit is concerned. However we all know that Java is not totally secure, and
probably will never be, but that is like everything else an ongoing process.

For Adobe Flash/Reader, Java & Firefox, just remove the previous install from
the policy and then deploy the updated version. None of these are upgrades in
the sense of an upgrade. They are all full installs. The “updates are ready”
icons should be disabled if possible. You can do this with Reader
(customization wizard) and Java
(http://www.appdeploy.com/messageboards/tm.asp?m=33488&mpage=1&key=苾).
Users shouldn’t be burdened with updating software on their company computers.

Greetings!

One of the biggest issues regarding patching Adobe products and Java is, the
users tend to ignore the "Update" icons when they appear on their screen
"System tray". Consequently, we are now looking for a way to force these
machines to update.

First, a quick GPO question... I know we can build a GPO to install a piece of
software from an .MSI files at its next reboot. Is it possible to recycle
GPOs? That is, we make one with the msi for AdobeReader9.4.5 and reboot all
the systems in the OUs to which it is applied. Can we then unlink that GPO
from those OUs, and then when AdobeReader9.4.6 is relased, edit the GPO to
point to the newer .MSI file, link the OUs, then reboot those machines? -OR-
Is it necessary to write a new GPO for each update of a particular product?

I think I'll start a new thread for my next question - thanks!

Working through the setup and have hit a wall.
Trying to setup the NLS web server and when I install the SSL cert from our
internal AD domain cert authority, it appears that the cert isn’t intended for
a web server.
And the IIS7 cert request doesn’t allow to select what feature the cert is to
be used for.
I’m guessing there is a configuration on our cert server that needs tweaked,
but I’m not seeing it.
Our PKI is working otherwise as computer are using them, laptops are using them
for wireless authentication, but this is the first web server I’ve needed to
install one onto.
Our other web servers are using commercial certs but for NLS a domain cert
should be ok.
Any suggestions?

2011-01-20 Thread Steven M. Caesare
I've been to one of his speeches as well... no one on one time with him,
but great dude.

Good books too... I've read all the "Inside NT/Win" books since Helen
Custer's original, and then when he and Solomon continued the series.

My Mark R. story.

I attended a Mark R. & David S. pre TechEd event back in 2004. At
TechEd
2006 I met Mark R. waiting for a shuttle bus. I mentioned that I had
attended his mind dumbing 6 hour long crash dump analysis class at
TechEd 2004. Mark asked a lot of questions about what I thought about
the class, him, David, their presentation style, class materials, what I
thought, what did I learn, etc, etc. Instead of a "umm, thanks for
attending" response, I got to spend probably close to 10 minutes with
him because, I felt, he was deeply interested in seeing if he/they could
have done a better job. Nice.

2011-01-20 Thread Andrew S. Baker
Yep...

BTW, Handle v3.43 (and the even more recently released v3.44) have caused
crashes in a number of systems, as referenced by the forums

http://forum.sysinternals.com/handle-344-crashes-in-procexp141sys_topic24905.html?KW=handle

I have had 1 server (out of about 40) experience the problem -- a periodic
stop 0x50 error (once every 10-15 hours)

I'm sending him an email about that. :)

2011-01-20 Thread Erik Goldoff
Yep ... I wouldn't exactly call Mark R (or Mark Minasi) a hero, but
definitely a role model, a combination of a high level of technical
proficiency and communication skills... not only do they know a LOT, but
people are interesting in hearing it from them. I do know a fair amount of
techie folks that know a LOT, but it's painful to listen to them. I
realized I'd rather not be included in the painful group after enjoying Mark
Minasi's edu-tainment at a TechMentor Orlando seminar.

My Mark R. story.

I attended a Mark R. & David S. pre TechEd event back in 2004. At TechEd
2006 I met Mark R. waiting for a shuttle bus. I mentioned that I had attended
his mind dumbing 6 hour long crash dump analysis class at TechEd 2004. Mark
asked a lot of questions about what I thought about the class, him, David,
their presentation style, class materials, what I thought, what did I learn,
etc, etc. Instead of a "umm, thanks for attending" response, I got to spend
probably close to 10 minutes with him because, I felt, he was deeply interested
in seeing if he/they could have done a better job. Nice.

Working through the setup and have hit a wall.
Trying to setup the NLS web server and when I install the SSL cert from our
internal AD domain cert authority, it appears that the cert isn't intended for
a web server.
And the IIS7 cert request doesn't allow to select what feature the cert is to
be used for.
I'm guessing there is a configuration on our cert server that needs tweaked,
but I'm not seeing it.
Our PKI is working otherwise as computer are using them, laptops are using them
for wireless authentication, but this is the first web server I've needed to
install one onto.
Our other web servers are using commercial certs but for NLS a domain cert
should be ok.
Any suggestions?

My Mark R. story.

I attended a Mark R. & David S. pre TechEd event back in 2004. At TechEd
2006 I met Mark R. waiting for a shuttle bus. I mentioned that I had
attended his mind dumbing 6 hour long crash dump analysis class at TechEd
2004. Mark asked a lot of questions about what I thought about the class,
him, David, their presentation style, class materials, what I thought, what
did I learn, etc, etc. Instead of a "umm, thanks for attending" response, I
got to spend probably close to 10 minutes with him because, I felt, he was
deeply interested in seeing if he/they could have done a better job. Nice.

I concur, it will be hiding in a temp folder somewhere depending on the user/OS
it was executed under.

It didn't work for me. I ran jre-6u23-windows-i586.exe, didn't touch it when
the Install window came up. Nothing at all in the Temp folder.
Nor did extracting the .exe with 7zip.

OK, the link to the cds.sun.com sight got me a JRE installer. When I ran that
one and halted, it gave me an MSI which could be copied. The copied MSI file
is FUNCTIONAL!

Now, I wonder what hoops I'll need to jump though for jre1.6.0_24 (and
following)...

Thanks, all, for your assistance and patience!

RE: Windows SysInternals: ListDLLs v3.0 & Handle v3.43

2011-01-20 Thread Webster
My Mark R.

Nice.

RE: Windows SysInternals: ListDLLs v3.0 & Handle v3.43

2011-01-20 Thread Raper, Jonathan - Eagle
+1

I don't know Mark Russinovich, nor have I ever met him, but he strikes me as
the kind of guy who really cares and would take the time to help if he can. For
all the grumbling that some of us may make about Microsoft, there really are
people there that care about and are passionate about what they do for a living.

Mark Minasi (though he doesn't work for MS), is one such sort. I have met him,
as I'm sure a number of others on this list have, and even directly emailed him
with a question a few years back. While his response did take some time
(imagine the quantity of email he gets on any given day), he did in fact
respond with an answer and we had a brief dialogue about the issue at hand.

You might be surprised how many "famous" people there are in IT that would take
the time to seriously help. A couple of them even post in this forum quite
regularly. ;-)

Why don't both of you e-mail Mark R. and ask him? There was a bug in one of
the Sysinternal utilities used in the online Windows Internals class last
spring. The utility didn't work right when running on Win7 x64 and you had
the Windows Debugger stuff installed. I e-mailed Mark R., he had me send
him the dump, he gave me a work around and the utility was updated that
week.

  I presume you're using Microsoft's DHCP server.

The DHCP server accepts whatever name the DHCP client gives it. So
the clients aren't sending the parent domain as part of their name.

You should probabbly change the "Primary DNS suffix" for the
computers. On XP, that's buried under System/Computer properties,
"Computer Name" tab, "Change" button, "More" button. AD does that
automatically, but since these aren't AD members, you should prolly do
it manually.

Alternatively, you could enable the option to "Use this connection's
DNS suffix in DNS registration" for the network controller, but if the
NIC changes or whatever, you'll have to do that again. I think the
system-wide setting would be easier.

> And the ones that are like that don't show up in DNS.

By default, Microsoft's DHCP+DNS implementation only does DNS update
for Active Directory clients.

Open the properties of the DHCP scope (or server) in the MMC, click
the other tab, and enable the update-DNS-for-unaware-clients options.

You may also want to consider DHCP reservations. I tend to want
static IP address for such equipment anyway. But that's more personal
preference than a major need.

In my defense, 1) I did recall PrimoPDF and asked if that was still a good
one. 2) I never told anyone to "go pound sand" as someone on this list
accused me of doing. I *did* suggest we stop beating a dead horse, and that
I'd keep all the recommendations in mind should the quick and easy solution
not work out as well as I hoped.

RE: Background Checks and Drug Test

2011-01-20 Thread Cameron Cooper
What State do you live in?

You can request a copy of your background check and drug test. Also, would
suggest to check your credit history yearly to make sure that there isn’t
anything fishy on there. You can go here -
https://www.annualcreditreport.com/cra/index.jsp and get a report yearly for
free (unlike the others that claim to be free and will charge you)

As others have mentioned here, I would look somewhere else. Companies will
cover the cost of the background checks and drug tests, this shouldn’t come out
of your pocket.

Because, if I pay for something, I should have access to it. That includes the
drug results. What if it came back with a false positive? How would I know?

Also, what if the background check has false information on it? What if someone
stole my identity and I did not know about it? I had that happen to me. I was
trying to get a contract job a Fort Knox, and they did a credit check on me and
wanted to know when I lived in Florida. I have never lived in Florida. At that
point they said I should contact one of the credit reporting agencies to verify
my information. That is when I found out someone had stole my identity and
charged up over $30K in medical expenses. You know how hard it is to let the
company know that you are not the person they are trying to collect their
charges from? I had to sign at least three affidavits stating that I was not
the person who accrued those charges and that I never lived in Florida. Took
two months to get this all straightened out.

Seriously, it is not just the $50 or so dollars. It is the attitude that some
of the recruiting companies get the idea that, "Hey, we can save money by
passing these costs on the the prospective contractor." But this is before I
even have accepted a contract. I know, the paperwork says that they will deduct
those charges from the first paycheck, but I haven't even found out where the
job is at, let alone what the payrate is. And by the way this recruiter
sounded, when I talked to him, he didn't give me the payrate, or whether or not
I was accepted by their client. Just sounded like he wanted to get a whole pool
of people to accept this job/contract and then fill in the blanks, later.

To all,

I am looking at taking a contract position. I am currently talking to the
contracting rep about this position. He wants me to fill out some online forms,
standard stuff, but I am concerned about one of the forms.

This form is a release for a Background Check and Drug Screening. Now, I don't
mind the background check or the drug test. But what kinda irks me is that they
want to charge $10 for the Drug Test and $25 for the Background Check. What the
form basically says, is, that I am giving the contracting firm to deduct those
amounts from my first paycheck. I am also hesitant in filling out any forms for
them, as they haven't told me what the payrate is on this position.

I thought all Background Checks and Drug Test charges where the responsibility
of the contracting company?

What are your thoughts on this?

Re: Background Checks and Drug Test

2011-01-20 Thread Daniel Rodriguez
Because, if I pay for something, I should have access to it. That includes
the drug results. What if it came back with a false positive? How would I
know?

Also, what if the background check has false information on it? What if
someone stole my identity and I did not know about it? I had that happen to
me. I was trying to get a contract job a Fort Knox, and they did a credit
check on me and wanted to know when I lived in Florida. I have never lived
in Florida. At that point they said I should contact one of the credit
reporting agencies to verify my information. That is when I found out
someone had stole my identity and charged up over $30K in medical expenses.
You know how hard it is to let the company know that you are not the person
they are trying to collect their charges from? I had to sign at least three
affidavits stating that I was not the person who accrued those charges and
that I never lived in Florida. Took two months to get this all straightened
out.

Seriously, it is not just the $50 or so dollars. It is the attitude that
some of the recruiting companies get the idea that, "Hey, we can save money
by passing these costs on the the prospective contractor." But this is
before I even have accepted a contract. I know, the paperwork says that they
will deduct those charges from the first paycheck, but I haven't even found
out where the job is at, let alone what the payrate is. And by the way this
recruiter sounded, when I talked to him, he didn't give me the payrate, or
whether or not I was accepted by their client. Just sounded like he wanted
to get a whole pool of people to accept this job/contract and then fill in
the blanks, later.

Time to research IPS , intrusion PREVENTION systems ...
In the past I have used a TopLayer IPS 5500 which did a great job of
dropping malicious packets before they reached the servers. The DDOS
traffic will still utilize some bandwidth in the pipe, but not be able to
create the DOS havoc intended because their payload does not reach the

Do you need to sync the entire server? Couldn't you use Dfs? I think they
call it something else in 2008. That way you can just sync what you need.

SBS Server Remote sync options

2011-01-20 Thread Shawn Everett
Hi Guys,

I have a client with an SBS2008 R2 server that they'd like to sync
remotely to another office.

I realize I can sync the file shares fairly easily with RSYNC and such
programs but wonder if there's a way to sync everything including Exchange
fairly easily?

Does anyone have experience using Double Take for this?

Shawn

2011-01-20 Thread N Parr
Yes MS DHCP. Forgot to mention that, and that it made no difference
when I migrated DHCP from 03 to 08R2
I really meant to say use reservations, not static. I use reservation
quite extensively already.
Just wanted to see if there was a way to make it work like you talked
about changing the update unaware clients option. But I'm not seeing
that option anywhere. Would it be the "dynamically update DNS A and PTR
records for DHCP clients that do not request update" check box?

Is there a freeware app that can create PDFs, similar to the way one
does
with Adobe Acrobat, but with fewer bugs? :-) I like SumatraPDF that
someone
suggested on this list awhile back, and I got to wondering if there were
something similar for creating PDF documents. Of course, I know
OpenOffice
can do it, but I'd rather not install a complete office suite just to
create

Thanks!

RE: Resolving host names of non-domain members

2011-01-20 Thread Ken Schaefer
DHCP server doesn't update the DNS except if you tell it to for clients that
don't support that functionality.

The client updates the DNS, but you probably have your DNS set for secured
updates only, and as such your workgroup members are unable to establish the
necessary secured connection to the DNS server to effect the update.

You could set a reservation in your DHCP server, and then manually create the
corresponding A record.

Cheers
Ken

I have a few workstations that can't be domain members, mostly because the are
running controls for equipment and are locked down by the vendor. I've been
able to rename their workgroup to match our domain so I don't have a bunch of
stray workgroups in my network neighborhood.
Anyway, some of my clients/servers that need to get to shares for backups/etc
can't resolve them by host name. They are all set to DHCP and show up in my
Leases as hostname. instead of hostname.domain.local.
And the ones that are like that don't show up in DNS. Any idea why I can
resolve them from some clients and not others? I'm assuming it has something
to do with the DHCP server not properly updating DNS because they aren't a
domain member. Only way I can figure around it is to set static IP's and
either connect by IP or set an A Record.

But searching the archives would have revealed he already asked the same
question back in November. And how embarrassing would that be to discover
you're just repeating yourself and suffer from CRS[1]?

RE: Background Checks and Drug Test

2011-01-20 Thread Alan Davies
It's a cost of doing business for the government by delivering an agreed
level of due diligence on staffing "quality". They should pay - period.
Working in FS, we don't charge people to do the extensive financial and
criminal vetting that we perform on all staff and consultants - it's an
accepted cost of business to meet a regulatory mandate. That said, I
should point out that I'm based in the UK and the rights of the employee
are far more enshrined over here, so it may be unfair to judge from afar
(still sounds disgusting to me though!).

+1 However I think you got ripped off. An FBI background check only
costs 35 bucks.

I am a government employee and the background is required by state law
upon starting and every five years. However I would not agree to it
unless you have a job offer that is contingent upon passing the checks.
Unlikely that you will change their mind, but I would just bow out now.
Assuming it wasn't a dream job or I really needed it.

I had to pay for mine @ my current gig. $50.00 (CAD) for the background
check, no drug test though.

To all,

I am looking at taking a contract position. I am currently
talking to the contracting rep about this position. He wants me to fill
out some online forms, standard stuff, but I am concerned about one of
the forms.

This form is a release for a Background Check and Drug
Screening. Now, I don't mind the background check or the drug test. But
what kinda irks me is that they want to charge $10 for the Drug Test and
$25 for the Background Check. What the form basically says, is, that I
am giving the contracting firm to deduct those amounts from my first
paycheck. I am also hesitant in filling out any forms for them, as they
haven't told me what the payrate is on this position.

I thought all Background Checks and Drug Test charges where the
responsibility of the contracting company?

What are your thoughts on this?

RE: OT: Background Checks and Drug Test

2011-01-20 Thread Alan Davies
Not only +1 million on that, but ethically you are doing a disservice to
humankind by paying for it and allowing a company like that to continue
to operate! ;o) It's like not reporting a mugging - you have to duty
to report it to make sure others don't get mugged! What an incredibly
ill-thought, intrusive, arrogant, mistrusting, penny-pinching policy!

I have never submitted to any physical screening tests - while I admit
there are probably some rare jobs where that is appropriate, it should
never be the norm. To not only assume this is the norm, but to charge
you for this assumption of guilt reflects much that is wrong in society.
Mistrust breeds contempt and lack of personal responsibility. It is the
path to the dark side my friend!

Don't run.. Warp speed out of there. Find another agency that doesn't
nickel and dime you. That is just a dirty method to take additional
funds from your paycheck and pad their pocket.

Run... to another agency. I've worked with two or three and have never
had to pay for my own screening tests.
