Thanks
I know many backup solutions exist and some look truly great; but unless they
support
IBM Unix AIX version 4.3.3 and version 5.1 (requirements)

They are of no use to us here
Mainly because we need to backup ALL our server

 Hi
Looking to change our backup software and are open to recommendations

Our servers are a range of Windows 2000 2003 with Exchange 2003 and a
couple of version of Microsoft Sql server 2000 and 2005 We were
looking
at Symantec backup exec These machine will have a dedicated backup
server and an lto5 tape drive

We will backup to disk and then to tape (we have a requirement for an
off site tape backup so this must remain)

The backup will easily fit on 1 lto 5 tape and with data volumes this
should be ok for 2-3 years

 HOWEVER
We also have 2 IBM AIX servers running version 4.3.3 and version 5.1
These will backup again to a dedicated server with an ultrium 5 tape
drive The IBM servers cant be upgraded!

 Looking for a supported solution

We looked at backupexec and netbackup however only Older an now none
supported version will work with our Aix versions the new version
may
work but would be unsupported! (no good for us) Also they are charging
quite a high premium for backing up to tape

Suggestions are welcome especially first hand experiences

If any software is available that will do the whole thing (backup
windows and Aix) this would be an advantage and of course keep down
the
 costs

Currently we are using OPENBACKUP now unsupported and are looking at
ARKEIA (a spin-off of openbackup or parallel version)

Check out UltraBac. Great support (best part - rarely needed!), and they claim
to have an AIX agent.

You can download their entire product and use it free for a month. I'm sure
they'd be willing to work with you on AIX...

Heh guys,

Looking for some recommendations on a phone system. We are about to replace
our current Inter-Tel system with something new. We have about 150 phones at
two sites. We (the IT staff) manage most of the current phone system. For
our new system I'm looking for something that's easier for IT staff to
manage and that has better backup functionality of the system database and
VM and some redundancy so that if one site goes down the other is still
operational. So far everything, based on my own research, has steered me
towards Shore-Tel but I was wondering if their where others that were out
there that maybe as good or better.

Thanks,

James

RE: Phone System Recommendations

2012-08-06 Thread Cameron Cooper
There are Lync enabled phones
(http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/lync/gg278164.aspx) or you can use the Lync
client for all incoming and outgoing calls.

For remote users, you can download the Lync app for Apple/Android/Microsoft
devices.

From what we were told by a consultant, is that you can use either SIP trunks
or route through your existing PBX.

RE: Phone System Recommendations

2012-08-06 Thread Tobie Fysh
Currently our ISDN connects to our Mitel and then the Lync system is connected
via E1/T1 card to a Dialogic media gateway. (ISDN Mitel Dialogic Lync)

We have replaced all Mitel handsets with Lync devices - £20 wired headset
(Blackwire C310) up to £100 USB handsets (Polycom CX300). We have a few CX600
but they are not as functional as they are like traditional phones. A move to
Lync is organisational change!

Once all are migrated to Lync the ISDN will plug directly into the Dialogic.
Over time we are looking to move to SIP trunks but that's longer term.

Subject: Phone System Recommendations

Heh guys,

Looking for some recommendations on a phone system. We are about to replace our
current Inter-Tel system with something new. We have about 150 phones at two
sites. We (the IT staff) manage most of the current phone system. For our new
system I'm looking for something that's easier for IT staff to manage and that
has better backup functionality of the system database and VM and some
redundancy so that if one site goes down the other is still operational. So far
everything, based on my own research, has steered me towards Shore-Tel but I
was wondering if their where others that were out there that maybe as good or
better.

Thanks,

James

How to identify Schema extensions?

2012-08-06 Thread Christopher Bodnar
Anyone ever do this? I know you can compare a generic AD Schema to your
current one using the AD LDS analyzer tool, but then you would still have
to manually weed out any MS related updates (Exchange, SCCM, 2008,
etc). Was wondering if there is a better way. Perhaps by OID? is there
a definitive list of MS OID's that you could query against, and if not in
that list it must be a 3rd party schema extension?

Thanks

Subject: network drives show disconnected W7 and XP

Hi All,

The problem is with W7 accessing an XP machine running as a file share.
The W7 box has the xp shares mapped. Upon reboot the drives show
disconnected until you open it manually. Anyway to get it to not
disconnect? There is an app that used the mapped drive letter and it
wont run till that drive is connected

I've tried to turn off UAC. - no luck

I've tried net config server /autodisconnect:-1 - noluck

I can do a batch script to map each time at login but prefer not to.

Any suggestions?

TIA

I promise, last posting on this topic.

I received my ratings last night from TechTarget.  My session was ranked #7 out
of 46.  Not bad for a first timer. J

The top score was a 4.883 (out of 5) and my score was 4.822.  Which means there
were only .061 points separating the 1st and 7th ranked sessions.  Again, not
bad for a first timer.

There were 103 people who had their badge scanned for my session but there were
well over 200 there.  87 people took the time to complete their session surveys.

Looking forward to presenting this at Synergy Barcelona (45-minute version) and
at E2E in Hamburg, Germany (haven’t been told if I am getting a 45, 60 or 75
minute session yet).

Thanks

 Hi All,

The problem is with W7 accessing an XP machine running as a file share.
The W7 box has the xp shares mapped. Upon reboot the drives show
disconnected until you open it manually. Anyway to get it to not
disconnect? There is an app that used the mapped drive letter and it wont
run till that drive is “connected”

I’ve tried to turn off UAC. – no luck

I’ve tried net config server /autodisconnect:-1 – noluck

I can do a batch script to map each time at login but prefer not to.

 Any suggestions?

 TIA

essentially cannot contact ShoreTel directly for help. You MUST go through
your partner/reseller unless you pay ShoreTel for enterprise support. They
also have licenses for everything. Want to enable that cool feature for a
user? That'll be another license fee, please. (OK, I'm exaggerating. A
 little.)

+1 on all counts - solidity, partner choice and licensing.

As someone else pointed out, the Shoretel paradigm is to have lots of
little pizza boxes handling various tasks - we have two PRIs,
therefore two PRI units. We have lots of analog phones, and a number
of analog boxes to handle them (though some can do both VoIP and
analog - dial down the number of analog units attached, and dial up
the number up IP phones, in a 1:5 ratio. We also have some pure IP
phone units.

There is a Windows server that serves as a voicemail server as well as
a configuration server and bootup manager for the pizza boxes.

There have been some quirks with the older version of the Shoretel
software (client side, which matches versoin on the server) and Win7,
and also with 64bit versions of MS Office 2010. Those might, or might
not, have been cleared up in the newest versions of Shoretel. For us,
it's not a big deal to stick with 32bit MS Office 2010, and solve the
rest of the problems by not integrating the Shoretel client with MS
Office.

The problem is with W7 accessing an XP machine running as a file share. The W7

you open it manually. Anyway to get it to not disconnect? There is an app
that used the mapped drive letter and it wont run till that drive is connected

I've tried to turn off UAC. - no luck

I've tried net config server /autodisconnect:-1 - noluck

I can do a batch script to map each time at login but prefer not to.

Any suggestions?

Ya, don't use Format-Table. Format-Table will display to the screen but
won't go to the file. For this you can use Select-Object. Select-Object
has some other side effects that aren't important in this context.

I tested with
$user = Get-QADUser -sizelimit 0
$user | select displayname, name, passwordlastset -first 10 | Export-Csv
./testFile.csv -NoTypeInformation

Once that worked, I removed the -first 10 from select
The -NoTypeInformation is to remove the annoying .NET type line that gets
put on the first line of the CSV file. The -sizelimit 0 will get you past
the default query limit of AD.

$user | select displayname, name, passwordlastset | Export-Csv
./testFile.csv -NoTypeInformation

Side notes... When dealing with larger data, I tend to dump the query into
a variable. This way I am playing with the data locally and not waiting
for the query to complete each time I test.

Re: PS export question

2012-08-06 Thread Steven Peck
Format-Table doesn't play nice with the pipeline past itself. From your
example I suspect you used Out-File instead of Export-CSV. I just did as a
quick test of both and the output is not nearly as pretty as Export-CSV

Using select-object you narow down which items get passed down the pipeline
but you still preserve all the data, etc. This will play nice with the
various Export-* commands. The various Format-* commands are realy for
output to the screen as your end destination. They dont seem to play nice
with the pipeline past themselves. The downside to select-object is that
ONLY the items you select are passed along. Everything else gets dropped.
For most basic scripts/cmdline uses this is fine. It only gets complicated
if you wanted to do more stuff with other data in the object.

So, as a habit when playing with data, I would suggest using select-object
as it plays nice with the pipelines which opens up a world of oportunity
later.

You should definitly check out the 3 videos I suggested earlier. I'm still
learning stuff I missed myself and I posted some notes on what I learned in
the last one. I need to go back over the remoting one so may post notes on
that one as well.
http://www.blkmtn.org/PowerShell-neat_function_tricks_for_free

MBS or one of the others will point out if I don't have this quite right as
he is way better at PowerShell than I am, but the PowerShell community as a
practice tends to discourage Format-* as the output point in scripts. It
tends to make it less useful in the long run for flexibility and re-use.

Thanks!

I wonder what would happen if you re-enabled UAC and disabled the
settings I mentioned? wink

I would suggest that this might be a bad idea and to explore other ways
of fixing this issue.

I should add, disable them on Win 7. If yo go that route take a look at
the security issues if you do disable them.

Kind of sounds like this one. These two settings are enabled by default,
disable them and test to see if it helps.

TIA

Jimmy

Re: System Center 2012 - SQL Server 2012?

2012-08-06 Thread Steven Peck
I think when SC 2012 Service Pack 1 (Which is in CTP right now) is released.

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=30133

System requirements

*Supported operating systems:* Windows 8 Release Preview, Windows Server
2008, Windows Server 2008 R2

The Virtual Machine Manager server for the CTP2 release System Center 2012
SP1 will only run on Windows Server 2012 RC. For full prerequisites, see
the document “Virtual Machine Manager in System Center 2012 Service Pack 1”
at the following link: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=254803.

Prerequisites for Configuration Manager can be found at:
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=252950.

All other components now support Windows Server 2012 RC and SQL Server 2012
in addition to the operating systems that were supported in System Center
2012. For details on what was supported in System Center 2012, see
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=255218.

Re: Troubleshooting wireless

Among other vendors, check out the offerings at http://www.metageek.net.

You might use the wi-spy to do a longer term analysis of your environment.

We have a wireless system here that spans five floors and we have 25 AP’s.
For over a year I haven’t been able to get a good handle on how to
adequately troubleshoot this. For a while I had several older laptops spread
across a few AP’s and would send a ping test to and I would have some
 software monitoring that.

Sometimes the laptops would stop responding to ping even though other
 systems around it could connect

Sometimes the opposite was also true

Most users use wireless just in our conference rooms. Some users never have
a problem, other users it sometimes works and sometimes doesn’t.

Drilling down we are finding nothing in common – For example some Dell
D6240’s are fine, others aren’t, all of them are built from the same image.
We have probably 6-7 models of laptops, some have XP, some Win7.

It’s killing me that there seems to be only about 5% of the users reporting
problems to be able to reproduce the problem at any given moment. In fact
not 10 minutes ago I had a user tell me wireless quit working for them in a
specific area. I take a laptop over and meet the user in the “dead” spot,
and of course it now worked flawlessly for her and I.

The wireless vendor came out months ago and said the 2.4GHz spectrum in our
area is very noisy with other RF and that if we moved everyone to 5GHz
things will be much better – problem is not all of our laptops area 5GHz
capable and our wireless AP’s are not dual radio (they can do 2.4 OR 5GHz
 but not both).

Soon. It's generally 30-90 days after a major release (like SQL Server
