Have a server that the E drive (data drive) via Windows Explorer has a
total size of 54.3GB with 1.61 GB free. There are 2 folders in the drive.
If the total size of the 2 folders are added, it equals approx 24GB. So
the question lies where are the other 30GB of data hiding? All files and
folders are being displayed. Going to run Xinorbis to see if it gives any
 further information.

Any thoughts or insults would be appreciated as it may jar my mind…

 Folks,

Any suggestions on products to manage laptops? We have a number of nomadic
users who use their issued laptops with aircards. Sometimes they have a
wired or wireless connection, but not at any of my locations (these staff
 work off-site).

Staff don't have much access, they are all users. I am looking for a
product whereby I can enforce similar content filtering/web surfing
filtering as my corporate fire walls. I assume I'd need some sort of client
for the laptops that would occasionally check in to a central system for
updates. We are a Fortinet shop, and I'm looking at the Forticlient, but am
looking at alternatives. We have an issue with viruses on these machines
(usually blocked, but I get the notices), and that's usually from staff
going to web sites that would be blocked at the corporate level.

 Suggestions appreciated.

Subject: Get rid of Favorites gold star in MSIE 8

Okay, we're finally starting to tackle the process of upgrading to
MSIE 8 from MSIE 6, having been given the green light by all our
 customer SCI portals.

One challenge I face is the widow of the company's founder, who is a
nice old lady who unfortunately does not get computers *at all*. I'm
trying to make MSIE 8 as much like the MSIE 6 she is used to, and as
simple as possible. I've turned off most of the new toolbar icons and
menus and search box and other stuff, turned off tabbed browsing, and
turned the traditional menu bar back on.

PROBLEM: I cannot find a way to remove the Favorites button, with
its gold star icon, and the giant toolbar strip which holds it.

When clicked, this button folds out a panel on the left of the
window, listing favorites. This is redundant to the Favorites menu,
and (more importantly) will just confuse her.

The giant toolbar strip would otherwise have tabs and/or new menu
icons on it, except all that is disabled, so it's just a mostly-empty
gray block of nothing. It eats up a ton of screen space, which is
important on the laptop she has.

If I right-click the toolbar strip and choose Customize, I have
the option to show the Favorites bar (formerly known as the Links
bar). If I do that, a new toolbar strip appears, the Favorites
button moves there, and the first giant toolbar strip disappears. But
I don't want to display the Favorites bar, either.

The Favorites button does not appear in Add or Remove Commands
under Customize. It's simply not there.

When tabbed browsing is enabled, the Favorites button will appear on
the tab bar, which at least keeps it from wasting space. But like I
said, tabbed browsing is disabled (because otherwise this person will
continually lose her web pages and my phone will never stop ringing).

I found some people suggesting I disable the Command Bar via Group
Policy. I tried invoking that policy, which did cause the Command
Bar to become grayed out in the list of available toolbars, but it
 didn't hide the Favorites button.

I found a GP setting to disable the Favorites bar. Invoking that,
Favorites Bar became grayed out in the toolbar list, but the button
and its toolbar is still there. If I do that when Favorites Bar was
previously selected, upon GP application, the other bar comes back,
 with the button.

Is there a way to do this, or am I just doomed to more support
headaches because Microsoft decided you shouldn't be able to remove a
 button?

 Hey folks,

Looking for thoughts/experience/opinions on paging file usage on systems
with large amounts of RAM. Primary application will be SQL Server 2005.

We have a pair of new Dell R910 servers, each has 256GB of RAM. The
default swap file created by Win2008 R2 Enterprise basically filled ¾ of
the local storage that we bought with the server (primary storage will be
SSD drives on our CX4 array).

We’ve been kicking around the idea of either: disabling the swap file
altogether, forcing it to something smaller, or purchasing some additional
local storage to dedicate to swap.

I’m concerned with application crashing if/when memory gets filled and has
no swap to move to – but at the same time, it’s 256GB of RAM – should take
quite a bit to fill. Right now, I’m leaning toward buying some additional
local storage and dedicating it to swap. Seems like a waste of resources,
but this is an essential business application so money is easier to come
 by for this.

Interested in hearing your thoughts or experiences.

Re: AD account - weird problem

2010-06-01 Thread Andrew Levicki
Hi Richard,

Unless she insisted on taking her keyboard with her to all the other
workstations, I think we can rule out a sticky or bad keyboard!

Have you tried logging on as the user yourself after having reset her
password, rather than relying on her saying it does or doesn't work? I would
be inclined to try that.

Also, although it should explicitly say that the account has expired if it
has, you should check that the account hasn't expired.

Let us know how you get on, I'd be interested to find out what it was when
you know...

Cheers,

Andrew

 Greetings!

I got an emergency call MON regarding one of my users (a poison center
agent). She was unable to log into any of the workstations in our network.
Other agents were able to log into her primary workstation. She was
getting the usual error that the password was incorrect (and to check the
 CapsLock key).

I used ADUC from my workstation to reset her password. Still no access...

I tried ADUC from two different domain controllers, and tried setting
 different passwords. Still no access...

I also checked her account properties. The login hours were set to full
access, 168 hours per week. The account is not locked.

Domain is Windows 2003 Native (not R2). Workstations are all WinXP Pro
 SP3.

Before I bring out the big artillery (delete her account, re-create it, and
then re-assign permissions to all her files, shares, etc), what else to
 check?

 Thanks...

We are running SAV because we are a Symantec Partner, therefore I assume we
get it for free. But, if I had the decision I would switch to VIPRE in a
flash. I have nothing against Symantec, in fact they have a strong portfolio

badly designed and above all a bloated resource drainer.

I would be very surprised if anyone here came out strongly in favour of SAV,
but I would be very interested to hear if anyone has positive experiences.

Re: Domain controllers, what is supposed to happen.

2010-04-21 Thread Andrew Levicki
Hi Mark,

I have a couple of questions if you don't mind. Firstly why have you split
the FSMO roles out on to two different domain controllers? It's not that
it's wrong or anything, it's just simpler (and Microsoft's recommendation)
to keep them all on one domain controller unless there is a specific need to
do otherwise.

Secondly, which server(s) is/are your DHCP server? Another server right? Not
one of the domain controllers?

Thirdly, what is your requirement for WINS, out of interest?

To answer your questions, yes the DNS/WINS services on the remaining domain
controller should have fulfilled client requests, so I would certainly look
into why that didn't happen. Did anyone try rebooting their PCs, as that may
have helped?

If you had been unable to get Server1 running again then yes you would have
had to seize the domain-wide FSMO roles (RIP) from Server1 on to Server2 and
modify your DNS/WINS. But don't try and bring Server1 back up at this point
(Then work on getting Server1 running again, or replacing it.), you must
rebuild or replace it.

Regards,

Andrew

reach any of the servers, or internet. I was able to get the server going
again (bad memory chip, so I just took it out).

I thought that if one server went down, the DNS/WINS look up would go to
the other server. But it might be slower (note, I didn’t try any of this,
just going on what the user said). Comments?

If I didn’t get Server1 running again, what should I have done? I assume I
 should do the following.

 1. Seize the FSMO roles from server1, and put them on server2.

 2. Change DHCP so Primary WINS server is server2. Maybe even take
 out Server1 as DNS/WINS possibilities.

Then work on getting Server1 running again, or replacing it.

 Did I miss anything?

Not one of the domain controllers?

How do you guys manage remote users' machines? I have many users that use
laptops out of their cars, or desktops out of their homes, etc. that rarely,
if ever actually connect to the network by wire. They'll access their
e-mail through the web, and for some, that's as much contact as they have.
How do you manage that type of system? Ensure security updates, AV

 Any thoughts are appreciated.

I have ONE user who’s having a problem with her Outlook 2000 today. For
some strange reason, the ONLY way I can get it to start and open up is to
start it in safe mode, i.e. “outlook.exe /safe”. That’s not an ideal
situation, obviously. I’ve tried pretty much all the other command-line
switches that seem to apply, including “/nopreview” and “/cleanprofile” but
the only one that does anything at all is the “/safe” switch.

Any clues as to what could be the problem? I can’t seem to find anything
that might be causing this. The machine is running XP Pro SP3 and it was
working fine yesterday, but today, for some reason, it just won’t work
normally, and I’ve even had the user restart her computer. I’m just about
out of options here… I created a shortcut on her desktop to outlook.exe in
safe mode, so she’s working, but it’s a less than ideal situation.

 Thanks!

Sorry if I've missed something, but creating entries in the hosts file

I did the MCITP:EA first then the MCSE 2003 and I can tell you that

I just used the MS Press self-paced training kit and measureup.com for

I highly recommend it because 2008 is gaining traction and some

Good luck.

Hi Carl,

I believe that gmail ignores periods in the left hand side of the address,
so in fact those two email addresses are the same account, i.e. not
forwarding. You could equally say the same about c.h.o.u.s.e.m@gmail.com
, ch.ou.s...e.m.@gmail.com, you get the idea.

They also ignore anything after a plus symbol [ + ], therefore
c.h.o.u.s.e.m.a.n+anything_you_like_in_h...@gmail.comc.h.o.u.s.e.m.a.n%2banything_you_like_in_h...@gmail.comequally
goes the same way.

Feel free to try the above and see if it works.

I hope this helps.

Yesterday we received the shipment - box one of one. It seemed, at
roughly 26lbs, a tad lighter than I expected, so I stay in the

They shipped the rail kit and the CD and all of the packing material,

 I can laugh about it - a little bit - because it's not a time-critical

Looks like it was DNS poisoning. He looked in the host file and there
were a bunch of entries in there that was causing the issue. Once removed,
they were no longer being redirected to the p0rn site.

  Hi Cameron,

Have you checked that the DNS clients are definitely configured with the
correct DNS servers in their network configuration?

Assuming that you have them pointing to internal DNS servers, you should
then check that they are configured with the correct forwarders.

Having done that, you should launch nslookup on those DNS servers and
checked that the DNS name for the company website resolve correctly.

Finally you should run ipconfig/flushdns on the DNS clients.

Please report back how you get on.

Hi Damien, yes is the answer to your question but the fix is very simple,
you just need to reset the computer account:

I’m wanting to confirm something and so far my Google-fu has not produced
 any particularly authoritative answers.

By default computers that are members of a Windows 2003 domain change their
machine account passwords every 30 days.

If a Windows XP workstation is offline or disconnected for more than 30
days, will the secure connection between that workstation and the machine be
 broken?

Will this prevent domain users from logging into the PC?

I’m pretty sure the answer is yes, but wanting verification. We have some
“vended” laptops that are frequently unused for weeks or possibly months at
a time. The user then finally dusts off one of these machines that hasn’t
been used in over a month, and then scream when they can’t login from it.

Re: OT: can't get BB to initalize to BES

2009-12-28 Thread Andrew Levicki
Hi Dave,

This is one of the joys of BlackBerries, I'm afraid. It's not unusual to
have this situation. Because of the many things that can go wrong during
activation, these things can happen. What I would do is this:

- delete the user from BlackBerry Enterprise Server
- on the handset, go to Options, Security Options, General Settings, Wipe
Handheld
- reboot the BlackBerry Enterprise Server server hardware or at least
restart the BlackBerry services in services.msc
- recreate the user on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server and set activation
password rather than generate and email password.

This normally does the trick for us when this happens.

Good luck!

I am still new at this BES thing. My first two phones activated just fine
but I have one that sits at initalizing on both the phone and server sides.

I have tried both the wireless and wired/usb methods. I have also removed

This phone is about 6 months old and it did upgrade a bunch of apps when I
hooked it up to the usb cable.

Anyone with some insights to get this phone activated?

Certainly helped me when I was studying for the CCNA.

As regards how far to go with Microsoft or Cisco certification, it's up to
you, your mileage may vary etc. I know some great people who have never

 Hi,

Sorry for the off topic (if it is) post. I am getting back into IT full
time after doing it as a secondary job for a decade or so and I have a
number of questions. My goal is to get the skills necessary to become a
modern Systems Admin and/or Network Admin in the SMB market.

I currently have both the MCSA and MCSE for Windows 2000 and a Cisco
CCENT. I plan on updating the Microsoft certifications to their modern
counter parts and to take the Cisco certificate to at least to CCNA. Now
 the questions.

- Any recommendations for a good online Cisco discussion group?
- For my target job, how high should I go in the Microsoft and Cisco
certification tracks?
- Other certifications?
- Recommendations for training sources?
- Recommendations for lab equipment? I'm thinking a virtual server
farm but real Cisco equipment. Question is, which Cisco equipment. I
already have a 871W that I got for the CCENT but it hurt as much as it
helped -- integrated routers have command sets that are similar, but
different, from their non-integrated counterparts -- so I'm looking for
other equipment to train with. Any suggestions?
- Is TechNet still the best way to Microsoft lab software on the cheap?

I think that covers it, at least for now. :-)

Any help you be greatly appreciated!

Re: OT: Cisco ASA and NAT

2009-12-21 Thread Andrew Levicki
Hi Jason,

We just recently got a Cisco ASA 5505 and I remember having a few joyous
configuration opportunities with it. Could I ask you to post your
running-config here please? (obviously mask / delete any public IP
addresses, passwords, etc).

I'm sure it's likely a very small configuration error either with the NAT
rules, the ACLs or maybe even somewhere else. A fresh pair of eyes can't
hurt.

Regards,

Andrew

2009/12/21 Jason Morris jmor...@mjmc.com

Yes I have verified it’s not a DNS problem.

No I can’t ping/traceroute out when statically natted. But the second I
remove the static nat rule, I can without having to clear xlate/local/arp.

I have verified I’m using the correct public and private IP addresses. The
static rule exactly matches all the other rules that work fine. L

Have you verified it isn't just a DNS problem? Can you ping/traceroute out
 when statically natted?

I’ve been working this problem for the past week or so and nothing I do
resolves the issue. Hopefully someone here has run across it.

We’re running a Cisco ASA for a firewall. On DMZ1 we have a bunch of
servers. A bunch of those servers have static nat translations to public IP
addresses. Then we have access-lists controlling what ports are open on each
of the static addresses. IE: web/pop/smtp. I have a global rule set on DMZ1
stating if something doesn’t have a static translation, give it the address
 of the external interface.

I have a new mail server we’ve been running in the DMZ for awhile. It works
fine without a static NAT translation on it…minus the fact I can’t connect
to OWA. As soon as I add a static translation to it, it stops browsing the
Internet and the queues sending out stop.

 My static looks like this:

 Static (DMZ1,OUTSIDE) 1.1.1.1 10.0.0.1 netmask 255.255.255.255

I’ve cleared the xlate table and local tables hoping it was just an ARP
issue. I’ve rebooted the ASA with the static command active so it would take
it on reboot and still no luck.

The server is 2008 Enterprise with multiple interfaces and I’m stuck. L I
have verified the routing table is ok to send all traffic destined for
0.0.0.0 to the proper ASA gateway.

Re: MP3 players!

2009-12-15 Thread Andrew Levicki
Hi Glen,

I won a Creative Zen Vision M
30GBhttp://www.creative.com/products/mp3/zenvisionm/about 5 years
ago and have never had any problems with it at all. There's
plenty of room to put my favourite music on and I can always swap music to
and from an external hard drive. The Windows driver support is excellent as
is the Creative support website. In that time many of my friends have been
through about 3 different models of iPod or other similar Sony models. Aside
from the fact that I won it, I've done very well with this and I know a
couple of other people who paid for theirs and are also still enjoying their
Zen. Highly recommended. I'm sure there are larger capacities available in
the series now, too.

Regards,

Andrew

  Humm.

I’ve owned 3 and never had to reformat any of them.

When you re-format, are you formatting NTFS or FAT. I’m thinking there may
be an issued with 2gig and FAT.

Also, are you using the computer to reformat or a menu/utility on the
 device?

 Might be an issue.

I think you’ve just proven the old adage, “You get what you pay for”. Buy
cheap Chinese mp3 player, don’t expect a Cadillac.

Now, you might also want to look at the site, www.anythingbutipod.comTheir
forums cover lots of brands. Maybe someone there can help with your
 particular brand/model.

 Good luck.

Sorry about this rant, but I’m frustrated! I can’t seem to keep an MP3
player that works for any amount of time! I keep killing them! I just bought
a new touch-screen MP3 player off eBay and it arrived last week. Today, I
went to add some songs to it, and it wouldn’t finish “booting” up. My last
one I cracked the LCD display. The one previous to that fell out of my
jacket pocket onto the kitchen floor. Despite no obvious signs of damage it
wouldn’t boot up. And so it goes! Also, if I try to put more than about 2 Gb
of music on an MP3 player, it corrupts the file system and I have to
 reformat it and reload it!

Is there such a thing as a MP3 player that just works and doesn’t break if
you look at it wrong? Or am I just cursed by cheap Chinese MP3 players???
Any recommendations for an MP3 player that won’t break if I look at it wrong
or corrupt if I try to put too many songs on it???

We got an APC UPS with an extra auxiliary battery that under current load
will give just over 1 hour of run time for all servers and related stuff

Subject: [SAGE] So you think you know traceroute...
 To: sage-memb...@sage.org

Most network engineers and sysadmins would probably say that they're
 intimately familiar with 'traceroute
 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Traceroute',
and consider it one of their fundamental network troubleshooting tools... I
certainly do. But you might be amazed to learn, as I did, how much you *
 don't* know about traceroute.

Richard Steenbergen of nLayer Communications, Inc., did an *excellent*
 presentation
 on traceroute
 http://www.nanog.org/meetings/nanog47/presentations/Sunday/RAS_Traceroute_N47_Sun.pdf

 at
this month's NANOG http://www.nanog.org/ (North American Network
 Operators
 Group) meeting:

   - A Practical Guide to (Correctly) Troubleshooting with
 Traceroute
 http://www.nanog.org/meetings/nanog47/presentations/Sunday/RAS_Traceroute_N47_Sun.pdf
 ,
   by Richard A.
 Steenbergenhttp://www.linkedin.com/pub/richard-steenbergen/0/8b/398
of nLayer Communications http://www.nlayer.net/.

Among other things, this presentation shows you:

   - How traceroute works
   - What you can learn from the DNS hostnames returned by traceroute
  - Where the ISP/carrier boundaries are
  - Where the equipment is located, geographically (do you know what a
  CLLI code is?)
  - What type of equipment the ISP/carrier is using
   - What the round trip times reported by traceroute *really* mean
   - How you can be led astray by ICMP prioritization, rate limiting,
   asymmetric paths, and load balancing

One of the coolest tricks I learned from this presentation is, to find out
more about what's at the other end of some hop that appears to be a
point-to-point link, assume that the IP address you see is one of the two
addresses in a /30 subnet (as is commonly assigned to point-to-point
 links),
and do a DNS reverse lookup of the other address in the /30.

This is useful, for example, in figuring out which egress port a packet
 went
out on, since traceroute normally only shows you the ingress ports for each
device along the way. For example, let's say I was looking at the following
traceroute output, and wanted to know the egress port on router #3, as the
 packet moved to router #4:

 *brent%* traceroute www.google.com
traceroute: Warning: www.google.com has multiple addresses; using

To find out more about router #3's egress port, I look at the IP address
 for
router #4 (64.142.0.210), figure out what would be the other IP address in
the same /30 (64.142.0.209; hint: the lower address in a /30 pair always
ends in an odd number, and the higher address always ends in an even
 number,
so if the address you know ends in an odd number, the other address in the
same /30 is going to be the next *higher* number, and if the address you
know is even, the other is going to be the next *lower* number), and do a
DNS reverse lookup of that address:

HP acquiring 3Com makes sense to me. 3Com is dying, as a switch
company. I'm sure they have good engineers, patents, etc.

I don't know anything about 3Com's business in China or Tipping Point.

But I do remember the 3Com NBX phone system. This is an area where HP
can expand into with the portfolio of 3Com. I'm quite interested in
where the 3Com phone system ends up.

I have 1 or 2 users (and that’s it) that would like to get a Blackberry

The last time I looked, Blackberry Enterprise Server was the only way to

Like a Small Business edition or something?

Hi All, Lyris apparently had a hiccup

Everyone got a relay denied that is reporting this problem.
Every single one of these people had a DNS lookup failure by Lyris (the
 hiccup).
When this hiccup occurred, Lyris started using mxs1.fides.com
 (66.45.246.210)

 goes back
 to http://www.telnetcom.us/

I'm wondering if this was some sort of routing problem on the 28th of

that's when everyone's emails failed to deliver. It seem to occur in the

 again. Not
sure why everyone just now got the hold messages. We will open a support

After about 2 1/2 hours (shouldn't have spent more than 10 minutes, but I'm

I can sort of understand how the Trojan authors get off on their

I was thinking about a corporate “you send it” account or something

User who doesn't like logging off / shutting down

2009-10-22 Thread Andrew Levicki
Hi, I've got a user who doesn't want to log off let alone shut down their
computer.
They claim that it takes too long and they haven't got time to wait to log
on again or start up.

They're important enough that I can't force them to do so, but I'm worried
about possible problems.

The only detrimental effects that I can think of are added power consumption
and ticket expiration.

Can anybody else think of any other pitfalls or even have any experience of
this and how did you deal with it?

Thanks,

Andrew

So, I'm still left with the software updates and deployments, which require
restarts.

They do lock their workstation, luckily.

Maybe you're right, Ben, maybe I've got better things to worry about.

Locking the workstation doesn’t address software updates or deployments
 being missed, among other things.

Andrew should look into why it takes the computer so long to log in that
someone would complain. My 3+ year old Dell desktop takes 5 seconds or a
little more to be at a useable desktop in Vista. He could also tell her she
at least needs to log out on the weekends, or restart the computer as she
leaves on Friday. Find some middle ground.
