Re: ALERT : NTSYSADMIN LIST MIGRATION

2013-04-30 Thread C.E. Gene Connor
Since this is the last day of the month and most likely the end of this
list. Not really the end for good? Since one of the members here has
offered to take on the task of making sure all the list members involved
with the old one. Still have a place to give and get free advice.

I was going to let this whole screw over job of the list go. But, as all
who know of me. I’m a very open and straight forward on my outlooks and
what I have to say! I realize it is your sponsored list run on your
servers. And you have overhead to make it all work.

And if you choose to take it down? That is fine for me. But, you also must
realize that by not having enough “balls” Sorry ladies of the list. To come
forward and give the list members any info or updates on what to expect. Is
right down rude and uncalled for!

What gets me the most is GFI never had any problems in the past posting to
the list about new products or ways for them to make money? But, I guess
you have forgotten a lot of the list members not only bought/used or pushed
your products to places they worked at or even friends etc. And have helped
you to get to the size you are now.

As for myself I have no interest in your products and plan to share what
has happened here and the way you have right out. CUT OFF the hand that has
helped feed you for years!

I would also like to thank Stu ,Alex and the rest of the old sunbelt group
for the many years of list and personal support they have given to me and
others members etc.

Carpentry, huh? Well, my boss is a Jewish carpenter. ;-)

Thanks for the input, everyone. This definitely helps me to put things into
perspective. As for being ashamed, well, ASB picked up on the intended
hyperbole. I have much ?better? things of which to actually be ashamed!

I haven't had the burning desire or time to work with a home lab in the
past, but definitely need to, and now is the time. The office is not
conducive to a test environment, and the way things are these days, who
knows how much longer %work% will be there. If I decide to branch out on my
own, I need a test environment. Building such while being employed is much
easier to do financially, as opposed to the alternative.

On a more technical note, ASB - why specifically did you recommend that
particular model Netgear over Linksys or anything else?

Brian - curious, what brand/model is your external SATA cage? I don't know
why I didn't think about a TechNet subscription (*headdesk*) - I have one at
work. Duh. Thanks for the reminder. I even found a discount code online for
TechNet Pro (no media) that knocked $88 off!

Steven - multiple good points about documentation and 'real' servers being
LOUD compared to desktops. I need to learn more about multiplicity, and I
had not heard of Virtual Box. I'll have to read up on that as well.

Again, thanks to EVERYONE for your input. I really appreciate it.

Office help

2011-01-14 Thread C.E. Gene Connor
My beauty-full loving wife does a lot of free doc's for low income
people like contracts, divorce's,child support custody .

Question #1
We use office pro 2003 suit. The problem is when they take them to a place
for them to get filled in! They say they can't open them up in a newer
version of word? I did a search for answers and didn't quite understand how
to fix this for her and them.

I did however find this

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyId=941B3470-3AE9-4AEE-8F43-C6BB74CD1466displaylang=enIs
this fix suppose to be installed on the newer machine ones that fill them
inor on her system? Like I said it is the wifes system and I don't want to
screw it up! since most of your kids know more about office then I do.

Qusetion # 2
Some of the times she gets sent back from a place a pdf file. I have
installed foxit for her. for can't see buying a copy of adobe just to be
able to edit design pdf's for whatever the case may be. What do you all
recommend as a free or low priced pdf editor.

Side note: the comment about my wife. Yes, I'm know for openly stating I
worship the ground she walks on. And still can't figure out how she puts up
with my a$$holeism's ways etc.

Interesting:

There is no official word on the death of the Sidekick from Microsoft or
Tmobile, but it certainly looks bleak for the iconic device.

This week, Microsoft announced that they had lost all Sidekick user data
including pictures, contacts, calendars and other information from the
Danger's servers. Since the devices sync with the servers, the devices also
lost the data. The Sidekick data services had amazingly been out over a
week.

From what they say, after a week of investigation, there is no way to
retrieve the user data. Customers will have to start over. The word on the
street is that it was a Hitachi SAN upgrade failure.

Warm regards,

I recently scanned some of my computers with a languard beta scanner that I
have been using for years. And then scanned some computers on my subnet and
then on other subnets. They all showed ports 25 and 110 open. Since I
never got false results from my languard beta in years, I immediately
suspected that all of these computers were infected with some type of spam
bot. I picked out one machine and installed every type of free port monitor
on it that I could find. All results showed that that the ports 25 and 110
are not open. I think our firewall guys, they just started installing and
learning about firewalls, have it setup so that the firewall intercepts any
telnet session to 25 or 110 and gives it a window. Is this possible?

I have not tried moving my languard beta scanner outside the firewall to
test the ports.

On another note, a few years ago, I used the languard scanner to look for a
trojan that was infecting computers and found a port open on a linux machine
that corresponded to the port the trojan was infecting. Come to find out,
the linux machine was using some type of proprietary software that used the
same port as the trojan. We said, eh ok, you are clean, you can get back on
the network.

My guess would be Languard see the port number and immediately associates
with Trojan, without checking to see if it is udp or tcp.

Cisco's Pix firewall has a dangerous vulnerability, according to an advisory
released by the company today.

The bug is in the SMTP command filtering feature, known as Mailguard, which
is designed to give additional protection to the mail server.

Exploiting the hole would allow an attacker to gain information about email
accounts and names. The attacker may also be able to execute arbitrary code
on the mail server, if it is not properly secured.

Although there is not a direct workaround for this vulnerability, the
company said that the potential for exploitation can be lessened by
ensuring that mail servers are secured without relying on the PIX
functionality.

If that server is already well configured, and has the latest security
patches and fixes from the SMTP vendor, that will minimise the potential for
exploitation of this vulnerability, the advisory reads.

All users of PIX firewalls with software versions 6.0(1), 5.2(5) and 5.2(4)
with access to SMTP Mail services are at risk.

Apparently the glitch is a failure of the command fixup protocol smtp, which
is enabled by default on the firewall.

More information can be found here.

Cisco also warned that internet firewalls do not protect against risk
factors internal to a firewalled network such as social engineering, rogue
internal users or additional external access points to the internal network,
such as modem pools or network fax machines. As should, they should not be
viewed as the only security measure necessary to ensure network integrity.

I was reading somewhere that there is a version of Windows 2000 that can be
used in multiple languages so that you can use the same service packs and
hot fixes no matter what language you are using.

What I would like is a Windows 2000 server version that I can install on as
a DC to send to my office in France, so I can push out service packs and hot
fixes from my office here. I would also like to have the Win2K Pro
international version to install on all my France office computers for the
same reason. Also, so that if I need to troubleshoot a computer in France I
can switch it to English for me, but let my French users use it in French.

Is this a special version? What I read seemed to indicate that it was.

TIA,

Diane

Goodmorning
All,

I've
been working on installing W2K Pro on a test box and I continually receive
an error during the setup process.

I
am able to get to the portion of the CD install where it begins copying
files to the hard drive.
However, each time at about 17% or 18% of the process I receive an
error that a particular file cannot be copied to the hard drive. I can hit retry and the same message
reappears. The message further
states that there is something wrong with the CD and if the error persists
to call MS Support.

The
test system is a P3/600 with 2 SCSI drives running off of an Adaptec 2940UW
controller. I have swapped all
of the parts out: SCSI cables,
IDE cable for the CD, the actual CD and I've also used 3 different copies of
W2K Professional on CD.

I
really don't want to call MS.
Anyone have any suggestions?

TIA

Is it for dialup access? If so try IPASS. We have a salesman whose whole

Sorry for the off-topic post, but I've been asked by the head of our finance
dept to arrange for Internet access for him as he travels abroad for 2
months this winter. He needs to keep in contact with the office via our VPN
link. I'm looking for an Internet Service Provider he would be able to
access with a local phone call in Asia, most specifically Southeast Asia.
Does anyone know of any?

Thanks,

Horst

hate
to say on that, but, I know that I always only use the ms drivers to load a new

  Goodmorning
  All,

  I've
been working on installing W2K Pro on a test box and I continually receive an
  error during the setup process.

  I
am able to get to the portion of the CD install where it begins copying files
to the hard drive. However, each
time at about 17% or 18% of the process I receive an error that a particular
file cannot be copied to the hard drive.
I can hit retry and the same message reappears. The message further states that there
is something wrong with the CD and if the error persists to call MS
  Support.

  The
test system is a P3/600 with 2 SCSI drives running off of an Adaptec 2940UW
controller. I have swapped all of
the parts out: SCSI cables, IDE
cable for the CD, the actual CD and I've also used 3 different copies of W2K

Hi everyone,

My Application Eventlog gives me the following error after I log in:

Event ID: 1525
Windows has detected that Offline Caching is enabled on the Roaming
Profile share - to avoid potential profile corruption, Offline Caching
must be disabled on shares where roaming user profiles are stored.

And after that there's also this:

Event ID: 15
Automatic certificate enrollment for local system failed to contact the
active directory (0x8007054b). The specified domain either does not
exist or could not be contacted.
  Enrollment will not be performed.

Now I remember a site where I could search by just jusing the event ID
numbers... Is there anyone that can point me in the right direction and
help me solve the above ?

FYI, It's windows XP, logging into a NT4 domain

Thanks,

Hi,
I changed our firewall IP address on Friday. It's a Checkpoint Firewall-1.
Today, everything works great except some of my users like to check hotmail
email accounts, and we can't get any of the hotmail or passport sites to
pull up. Some of my buddies say that their hotmail is working great. Any
idea why changing my IP would not allow hotmail to work? Thanks in advance.

You know, I violated a cardinal rule of mine - don't post something
if you can't back it up. I did have a reference and now can't find
it. I did find a similar exploit in the Yahoo messenger. I'm
still pretty confident I did read about either a real attack via the icon,
or at least a proof of concept, and I will keep looking for it.
Anyway, the below is an exploit against an IM, so it shows it is
vulnerable.

From http://www.ca.com/virusinfo/encyclopedia/

Yahoo Pager/Messanger Buffer OverflowThere is a buffer
overflow problem with Yahoo Messenger that leaves the user vulnerable to
remote attack. The problem arises due to a lack of appropriate bounds
checking on the length of a URL that is received from another user inside a
message. Unfortunately, due to this oversight, it is possible for
unprivileged and possibly hostile remote users to execute arbitrary commands
by overwriting the EIP (return address) and filling the URL with malevolent
code. The hostile code could then be actioned when the unsuspecting target
host clicks on the URL.

Looking for a discussion on IM
Two things come to immediate mind:

1) Many IM clients allow for file transfer. Depending on
your overall security policy this in itself can be an issue. Even
if you allow people to transfer files, the IM client then becomes a
point of security control. For example, with AIM, it is supposed
to ask the user if it is ok if their chat partner sends them a
file. How long do you think it will be before hackers manage to
bypass that "confirmation"? Further, then they bad-guys could then
just send a backdoor program to the hard disk. Or just pick up
sensitive data from the computer.

2) There has already been at least one IM based virus - done by
embedding malicious code in an icon smiley face. This becomes
another area where the anti-virus vendors have to keep
up.

I'm sure there are other reasons as well, those are just the 2
that come to my mind before finishing my first cup of
coffee.

  Hello,

  I
have been asked to research and potentially implement IM for a company
to communicate internally as well as externally. However, I have
always heard that IM was evil and to close it down ASAP. I would like
to hear real world implementation concerns/ tips as well as the
  security issues associated.

  Thanks

LaBrea is a small Linux-based application that puts unused

which can stop or slow down scans of your address space...

LaBrea works as a low-level network application that creates

virtual machines on your network - machines that don't really

exist yet are able to answer connection attempts in a special

way that slows and even stops the connecting process...

Outlook lets you create distribution lists - groups of users
that you can message easily. There are a lot of ways you can
accomplish that with Outlook, by the way, though distribution lists are
probably the easiest.

I
currently do my own price requests for equipment. (Purchasing does everything
EXCEPT computer gear.) I use WinFax Pro. I have a database of recipients,
organized into groups, based on
hardware/software/whatever for which I require pricing.
 Using WinFax
Pro requires that I use my modem. This is currently NOT a
problem.
But I HAVE been thinking... Perhaps I could accomplish the
 same thing via
email. I personally don't use Outlook...yet. I'm still using
Eudora. But from what I've seen, it
doesn't APPEAR that either is particularly
conducive to creating groups to accomplish the
same thing.
So I've been wondering... Assuming I'm correct about neither being
particularly suited to doing what I'm
wanting to do, does anyone know
of some kind of email "app" that would
allow this? (I know that WinFax
Pro can interface to email. And I
tried it...once. It sucks...assuming
I was using it as designed...which I think I was.) Other than my Eudora client, Outlook or Exchange Server, I
 am ignorant of
email package(s) for ANYTHING.
Thanks in advance, you help is appreciated.

I’m not saying we go to war. But, I am saying that this type of thing needs

So as the old saying goes. If you house has rats, you get rid of the rats!
Not the house!!
We can all point a finger to a problem or mistake that might have cause

here are the answers to some of your questions ect.

http://lawcrawler.findlaw.com/scripts/lc.pl?entry=+e-mail+privacy+sites=all
But with respect to an employer’s privately-owned internal e-mail system,
the prevalent view among lawyers is that employees do not have rights of
privacy in e-mail communications they send and receive on their employer’s
system unless the employer acts in a manner giving rise to a reasonable
expectation of privacy.

In the U.S., e-mail (and voice mail) is the property of the employer. There
can be no expectation of privacy. At this point, it is more of a matter of
company policy. For example, a manager would probably be able to
read his/her subordinate's e-mail but could probably have the subordinate
censured for reading his/her e-mail.

As ISP's anything we uncover in the normal course of system administration
can be acted upon (i.e. turned into authorities.) However, once we contact
law enforcement, we are in a sense deputized and cannot look into their
e-mail accounts without a search warrant.

to a local folder (c:\data or c:\my documents or \\userserver\usershare)
and have the user put all documents, temporary desktop stuff there.

Are history and favorites part of the roaming profile also??

Hi everybody

Is there a way/tool to shrink ntuser.dat without deleting it?
The question came from one of our customers. He works with roaming profiles
and with the time the ntuser.dat file gets very big, and the workstations
become very slow.

Many thanks in advance.

Maybe not the best place to put it, but the NY city fire department web site

  Terror attacks hit U.S.
  Posted: September 11, 2001

People
walk away from the World Trade Center as ash rains down.

NEW YORK (CNN) -- Terrorists struck the United States Tuesday morning in
harrowing, widespread attacks that included at least three commercial jet
  crashes into significant buildings.
*In the first attack, a plane hit the north tower of the World Trade
Center in Manhattan shortly before 9 a.m., followed by another plane into the
second tower about 20 minutes later. Both towers later collapsed.
*About an hour later, a plane crashed into the Pentagon, part of
  which later collapsed.
*American Airlines told CNN that it lost two planes in "tragic
accidents:" Flight 11 from Boston with 81 passengers and 11 crew aboard and
Flight 77 from Washington Dulles airport with 58 passengers and six crew
aboard. Both planes were en route to Los Angeles
*United Airlines Flight 93 airliner headed from Newark, New Jersey,
to San Francisco, crashed near Somerset, Pennsylvania -- police said initial
reports indicated no survivors. United also confirmed the crash of Flight 175
  from Boston to Los Angeles.
  * The Pentagon, the White House, the State Department, the Justice
Department, the Capitol, the CIA and all other government buildings in
  Washington evacuated.
*President Bush cancelled an appearance in Florida to return to
Washington, calling the crashes "apparent terrorist attacks" and "a national
  tragedy."
*In the first ever national ground stop of aircraft, all flights
nationwide have been stopped at their departure airports.
*All international flights were diverted to Canada.
*In New York, more than 10,000 rescue personnel rushed to the scene.
The entire downtown area of Manhattan was evacuated as far north as
Rockefeller Center, according to an official at an emergency command post.
*Israel has evacuated all its missions around the world.
*The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta was
evacuated. CDC was preparing bioterrorism teams in case they become
  necessary.
  *Philadelphia landmarks were also evacuated.
*In Chicago, the Sears Tower was evacuated; United Nations in New
  York evacuated.
*The New York Port Authority said it had closed all bridges and
  tunnels into the city.
*U.S. stock markets were closed after the New York attacks.

here are the answers to some of your questions ect.

http://lawcrawler.findlaw.com/scripts/lc.pl?entry=+e-mail+privacy+sites=all
But with respect to an employer’s privately-owned internal e-mail system,
the prevalent view among lawyers is that employees do not have rights of
privacy in e-mail communications they send and receive on their employer’s
system unless the employer acts in a manner giving rise to a reasonable
expectation of privacy.

there have been case's that have went to court in Jacksonville, fl. where a

(read: microscope) that has a video signal feed, and they would like to be
able to capture high quality stills.

TIA for any help y'all can provide...

* MICROSOFT HOLDS THE LINE ON 2002 REVENUES
Microsoft says that its July revenues prediction for the current
fiscal year is still on track and that the release of Windows XP in
October will boost the company's financial performance. Microsoft Chief
Financial Officer (CFO) John Connors, in Boston this week for a
technology conference, reiterated that he expects the company to hit
its revenue target of $28.8 billion to $29.6 billion for the fiscal
year ending June 30, 2002. The first quarter, which ends in October,
will be soft, Connors said, but the second quarter will be a different
story.

  I have been
through several mergers of large/Fortune 100 corperations (Union Bank of
  Switzerland and Swiss
Bank/Paine Webber and Kitter Peabody) and can speak from experience when I
say that ther will be large cuts in the workforce of both companies to
eliminate redundant functions. It is just common sense to cut costs by
combining, wherever possible, duplicated functions. Where these cuts will
occur is a matter of speculation, but you can be sure since HP has
controlling interests they will generally get preferential
  treatment.

  It's
  not a merger?

  You'd better
learn big business. It's a merger, and don't expect to see too many
changes too quickly. Compaq was already making big time changes in
it's product line before this even happened. HP was planning on
getting out of the PC business anyways. A name change could happen,
  but who knows?

  I
  don't appreciate the naive comment
  anyhoo...

  You
saying it's not a merger is naive...

  Except its not a
merger. HP purchsed compaq. HP's management now controls the Compaq's
destiny. What this means is that HP will, in order to cut costs, eliminate
all possible redundant functions.I agree it is a good merger, but it is
very naïve to expect nothing to change.

  I
don't think there will be duplicate positions. I expect them to
continue to function as 2 seperate companies. Compaq's name is much
bigger than HP, especially in the server market. I think HP just
wanted a bigger piece of the PC and Server pie, and Compaq wanted the
financial backing of HP's dominance in the peripheral and printer
  market. It's a good merger.

  Interesting
  articles at www.infoworld.com:
  1.
  HP, Compaq target enterprise,
services markets in $25 billion acquisition

  2.
  Merger highlights role of HP's
  Fiorina

  While the
merger may not guarantee an improvement in sales/performance, does anyone
see a downside to the merger (other than HP/Compaq employees who will lose
their job when duplicate positions are
  eliminated)?

  Do you expect
the merger to provide better products and
  services?
