I think the swearing is related to our upbringing, if we were brought up
not to swear, then it was pretty funny when somebody did swear. Then we
felt grown up when we were away from our parents, and we could swear.
When we started swearing, we were grown up and we were knowledgeable
about the world. So if you are interviewing somebody and they start
swearing, you will then have an indication that these people have passed
into adulthood, are responsible and very literate. Hire them right
away.

I have also noticed that your environment will indicate how often you
swear, so if you are around people who swear a lot, you will swear a
lot. So if you are in an interview and the person starts swearing a you
will immediately know that this person hangs out with a lot of
respectable, high class, and socially acceptable people. Hire them
right away

I always wonder if somebody hears me when I am reading a stupid email

We're at about 5,000 users. We looked at several solutions, including
Ironport and Proofpoint. We liked them both. However, money was an
object, and we ended up getting a Barracuda. It was significantly
cheaper than other 2, and works good enough. Can't say it stops 100%,
but I know the guy that's responsible for it rarely has to mess with it,
and we get virtually no complaints.

Subject: Anti-spam solution

I am currently tasked to get rid of our ineffective Symantec Mail
Security which is, at the moment, our only anti-spam defense (besides
Outlook's junk mail folder). We have about 500 users running on Exchange
2007 with several different domains.

I have trawled the archives of the list getting some suggestions for
various appliances/software/hosted solutions. I was wondering what the
community considered to be the best configuration for an org of our
size. Our problems with Symantec are that if it is turned down, we have
too much spam getting through, and when turned up high, it is still
letting enough spam through to be annoying whilst pulling out some
rather important false positives. Cost is not usually too much of an
issue for us (we have ESX, Citrix MPS4, XenApp, AppSense, SCOM and SCCM
amongst our chunkier products), but if there is something cheaper
(especially for non-profits), that could be factored in. I'd also be
interested in anything that did antivirus as well, as I am not convinced
by Symantec's products at all.

Do most people favour the belt-and-braces solution for smaller orgs - a
hosted solution or appliance at the edge and software running on
Exchange? Or are there any products out there that do the job well
enough on their own? From looking at the archives it seems that IronPort
and the-product-formerly-known-as-Ninja are two of the most highly
recommended. Does anyone have any particular recommendations for hosted
solutions - MessageLabs seems to be quite highly-rated, and I'm tempted
by the pricing of Google's offering.

Finally, I was wondering if any of MS' products (like ForeFront) are
worth a look?

Sorry for rambling on, all advice, hints, tips, gratefully received and
compiled.

Has anyone else looked at abandoning Cisco for their firewall? We have
PIXs and they are trying to get us to move to ASA now that they are
phasing out. The ASA is very expensive and from what I hear, very
complicated to manage.

We are a medium sized business and do not need this IMHO.

Has anyone else left Cisco in this role for products like Sonicwall?

 No to VMWare server.

Qualified yes to ESXi - it's damned painful if you have to move VMs
between machines, and getting SSH running is not terribly intuitive,
 but it's definitely doable.

Sun has a virtualization product called VirtualBox, but I don't know

 know the licensing for.

RE: Haw-haw: New Mac OS X email worm discovered (UNCLASSIFIED)

2009-05-15 Thread Kent, Larry CTR USA IMCOM

Caveats: FOUO

No one 'invented' the English language. Celtic ( pronounced kel-tik) was
the language of the people of England before the arrival of the Romans
in 43 AD.
The common people continued to speak Celtic while the Romans and the
English nobility spoke Latin.
In the four hundreds, the Romans left England. The land was taken over
by Vikings from Denmark. They spoke a Germanic language. This soon mixed
with the Latin.
In 1066 England was conquered by French speaking people from Normandy.
Now French started to become mixed with the other languages.
Because French has its beginning in Latin ( lingua latina ) there was
another dose of Latin injected into the Language.
So, you see, English was not invented at one time, but evolved over many
years. The one problem that this caused was pronouncion. People took the
easiest pronouncion no matter the spelling. So now we have many words
that seem to have no connection to their pronouncion.
An example, the word knife, in German ( a phonetic language ) would be
spelled NEIF . The original pronouncion was Kah-nee-feh.

Bill,

A thread thats starts Haw Haw cannot hope to be considered
professional, and cannot hope to get a professional response.

Please don't lecture me on the use of the English language, my country
invented it for goodness sake.

Its a light hearted topic, with light hearted responses - right up until
the point you put your two pennorth in.

show the emails in only plain text. He is the only user affected.

All his emails come in as plain text, even though html is selected. If
he receives an html mail from another user it will be in plain text when
he gets it. I tried opening in Word and in the Outlook viewer, its
always (Plain Text) at the top, even though the same email can go to all

OK, here's a teaser...

All of our AD accounts are gradually being locked out. I have one guy
searching for locked out accounts and unlocking them (and they do not
get re-locked out) but with 2500 accounts this is more than a PITA. Now,
this stinks of a brute force attack on an enumerated list of accounts on
the network (we allow 10 attempts then lockout for 30mins), but we can't
find _anything_ that looks like this. To compound matters, we have also
had a small outbreak of WORM_DOWNAD.AD which has been contained and
managed well, but I think this is a red herring as that worm's symptoms
are nothing like what we are seeing (and there is no correlation).

Does anyone know of a way to find out what processes are attempting to
make a logon attempt (we have about 10 DCs spread about the place) to an
account - bearing in mind it could be any one of 2500 accounts? Also, is
it possible to find out where the logon attempt that caused an account
lock came from?

Cheers, and TIA,

Andy.

For some of us, the irony is on the fact that those who live in the
most
socialist parts of our country never seem to be able to figure out why
the economy is so much worse in their area in comparison to other
parts
of the US. (i.e. - MI, MA, RI)

 roflwaffes.

Our economy is already well socialized at the state and federal
levels. Edging it to be more (hopefully only for a short term) or less
for the welfare of a very hurting country is not necessarily a bad
thing - for the good of the country. Not that you are, but to brand
him a socialist, or any ideas he is pushing as socialism, is silly
IMO. Our economy is a blend of capitalist and socialist ideals.

Sorry, missed the post before.
ImageX would work fine for imaging but it cant inject drivers into XP.
Sysprep will *very* much help you. It's designed to do just this, it will
allow additional Mass Storage Drivers to be included in the image, then it
will remove what's not present after.

nLite is cool, but its more than a GUI front end, it's a bit of a hack.

Due to the big difference in machine hardware, sysprepping won´t help me
very much. I need a customized install, with the selections for keyboard,
timezones, group names, accounts, etc, a bunch of SATA drivers, other
drivers for the most common hardware pieces we use. Would like to add Adobe
Reader, Java, media player updates to that also.

What would be the MS-approved name for the technology to do that, so that I
can google for it ? I considered nLite to be just a graphical frontend for
the .inf file modifications necessary to integrate drivers and pre-define
configurations

extremely limited (can't nix the trebuchet as it is vital to our long

Hi Folks:

We see an odd issue here with some of our Dell Optiplex machines, and
one Dell Dimension. Most of these units are two years old or older.
What happens is that the user turns on the machine, the fan goes into
overdrive, (sounds like a 1U server starting), and then nothing. The
user turns the PC off, waits 30 seconds or so, then can usually turn it
on successfully. This is periodic on these problem PCs. These are
GX260 and GX280 units mostly. I think the Dimension is a 4400 or
similar. We haven't been able to determine the cause. Firmware is
current, diagnostics run clean, too. Whatever it is the newer units
don't seen to have this problem (yet).

Ok, so lets have a little fun here on the last Friday in August.
There are at least 45 songs mentioned in this story, most from the
 80's. The rules:

 1. Name the song title
 2. Name the artist
 3. No cheating. Do this from memory. Don't Google or use any
other internet resource for your answers.
 4. Have fun!!

I'll post the answers when it looks like all guessing is done.

Disclaimer: I didn't write this, it is from a gaming forum that I'm
a member of, but I was the winner because I managed to find all the
songs.

The window lickers went on strike yesterday. I was too sexy for
their shirts...too sexy for my shirt...but not too sexy for my Kia.
And they didn't like that I wore my sunglasses at night while
driving my Little Red Corvette. So they jammed to Panama and told
me they were coming back to get me. One window licker pulled his
tongue off of the windshield and screamed, If I had a photograph of
you...there would be something to remind me... So, with a Rebel
Yell I hollered back, I want more, more, more! And I will shake you
all night long! So I jammed in my fast machine that I keep the
motor clean, and it looks like I will be dancing with myself for
awhile. This situation is spinning right 'round...like a record
baby...'round, 'round. You don't mess with a missionary man! I
know, I know. I hear you dudes - I need to relax and don't do it,
but what if I want to go through it?

The shortbusians need to know that I am the king of rock, there is
none higher, and all their MC's will call me sire...and that to rock
my kingdom they must use fire, cause I won't stop rock'in 'til I
retire! Until then, they can listen to me on the Mexican Radio as
they drive to Panama, and listen in stereo. Besides, they all wear
pink and live in pink houses. I know they look pretty in pink, and
I tell them all of the time dudes, what I like about you, is that
you are the sultans of swing. But I wear my sunglasses at night
because you freaks are blinding me with science.

Chief window licker stopped the car and pulled out a sledgehammer,
she is a goody two shoes, but had a look in her eyes that creeped me
out. I think she was thinking about burning down the house. She
came at me with pure energy, while turning Japanese. One dude turned
up the radio, and chief let out a war cry. She howled, We're not
gonna take! No! We ain't gonna take it anymore! She was coming so
fast at me I thought, If she hits me, it will cut like a knife, and
I wouldn't have the reflex to take these broken wings (I fell
earlier in the day on my arms), and bang a gong and get it on. But
I did notice that she was a pretty woman, and I thought, She's got
legs... And as fast as she was running at me with her
sledgehammer, I also thought, And she knows how to use them...

In conclusion, I grabbed the little mite, unleashed some TNT on her,
and said, I will rock you like a hurricane dude! I would walk 500
miles on your forehead and toss you under the last train to
 Clarksville! You

Some things don't take effect until the machine is restarted...so why
not a virus?

I have some systems configured to run a full scan - every file type,
everywhere, incl. recycle bin and .zip files many levels deep - upon
startup. However, these same systems power themselves up at 5:00am and
the users don't get in until 8:00am or later. By then the system has
completely scanned itself and applied any Windows Updates and rebooted.
Does it do any good? Dunno, but I feel better knowing every nook and

Like many modern applications, NOD32 will use all available resources
if/when it needs to - without interfering with other applications.

Is there an app that will show me programs or processes that are
accessing a drive letter? This is one of my biggest frustrations with
Vista. Before it was almost impossible for me to be able to eject a USB
hard drive, now it is impossible any time. But now, I can't even safely
remove my thumb drive. I've exited out of all programs, down to the AV
and sidebar and even stopped the index service. Nothing suspicious is
seen in the task manager. I'm just at a loss. I've tried process monitor
and can't get it to show me anything.

$28 for electricity?! Where the heck do you live, and do you not use
your air conditioning, or watch t.v., or have a refrigerator? That is
seriously low, unless everything in your house is gas, and that bill is
high. I'm lucky when my electric bill is under $100...

Jacob, good info, but not always accurate. My sister sent me an
interesting article last month that said the average home computer used
around $50 a month in electricity when on 24X7. This article was
stating the same reasons about conserving power. I agree we should all
do our part, but I told her the article was wrong. And the reason I
knew was that I have one computer at home that is on 24X7 for remote
access when I am not there. I also have a second computer that is on
only part time, and is a backup to the first. My electric bill in march
was $26 and change and May's was $28 and change. That is the entire
electric bill for my apartment. So you can see how I dispute all the
findings. However I do have power conservation turned on both
computers. They do aggressively power down monitors and even hard
drives when not in use. The primary does not totally power down so I
can still have remote access, but the secondary one does.

Shutdown your workstation and turn off the surge protector at the end of
every day.

The issue of leaving a workstation on all the time because turning it on
and off on a daily basis does more harm is absurd. With some
workstations running with a 300w power supply, that is a waste of
electricity.

8760 (hours per year) - 2000 (hours at work) = 6760 (hours not at work
per year)

6760 * 300 watts = 2028000 watts (2028 KWh)

2028 * .12 KWh (give or take on the cost of the KWh) = $243.36 year

$243.36 * 40 workstations = $9700 a year in electricity for workstation
not being used.

How often do I replace a hard drive in a workstation, maybe 4 or 5 times
a year. Does not cost use more than $9700 a year to replace hard
drives.

I turned the security group into a distribution group (cause that's all

I think that, even thought you've already checked, you need to go back

look at his group memberships again - and the nested group situation.

Is inheritance on the user object enabled?

After those two - it's deep voodoo. But I have links and references.

BES Admin acct has send as perms on all AD accts. I followed the 912918

This has worked for everyone but on guy. It doesn't show up in his.
I've also noticed that the Allow inheritable permissions was unchecked
and
rechecked it. The BES Admin acct comes back and it works. Then it
disappears. The allow box is unchecked. He is not an admin. Just a
domain
user.

So I open his acct, click the security tab and add the BES Admin acct
and
give it send as perms.
That occurs and then he can send.
But a few hours later, that perm disappears. Put it back, works, then
disappears.

I'm kind of at a loss here as to what is going on. Why does this one
acct
keep tossing the new perms?

Some of our students have just figured out that they can print to any
shared printer in their school (the printers are shared with the
default
permissions that allow everyone to print). We can stop this by
adjusting
permissions, which we did for one printer this morning--which just
caused the students to find another one.

Students share a common account, so knowing the account that's sending
the job won't help. I really need to know the name of the machine
 sending the job.

Is there a way to do this? Does that get logged?

I have 5 times the backup volume of the server on this disk, so I need

From a previous thread today I saw something called

I never deal with state employees, I always look for aggressive go
getters. Working those hours and money your being walked on compared to
what's in the business sector (my opinion of course)

Remember government business runs contrary to private business.

It's easy, I've done several migrations such as this with various
versions of Backup Exec, you just need to know what files to copy from
the old server to the new one. This article might be helpful to you:

Funny - I thought college was all about playing chess and bridge, and
chasing women.

Maybe that's why I didn't graduate...

The ability to commit and see something to completion. You obviously
take a lot of courses that have little relevancy to your actual

you make in college may help you down the road. There is nothing
better, IMO, then having a group of individuals studying, and going
into the workforce with similar interests, degrees and backgrounds.
Your paths will cross, and the higher up you go, especially in tech,
 the smaller the group.

You should be able to nail this down with the Exchange Server User

Google Desktop has caused spikes in Exchange 2003 here also, with the
indexing operations and its constant communications with the Exchange
server, so that very well might be your issue. We just flat out ban
Goog Earth/Desktop and all that now, due to the issues.

Above mentioned process ran away and buried my Exchange server a few
minutes ago. Still reviewing event logs but I'm wondering if someone
install google desktop search and it started to index his mail file
would that cause the lsass.exe spike? Server is 2003 std. with
Exchange 2003 std SP2 + all patches and is a DC\GC DNS and a few
shares

No, but they got caught. Then they shrug off Rodney Harrison's drug use
and Randy Moss's accidental woman beating but yet condemn Roger
Clemens and anyone else who have been accused but not proven guilty
(yet). My own opinion.

Im not a huge/regular football fan/watcher, so I have a question for
you:

Is what they did (or rather got caught doing) really that outrageous?
Don't teams watch each other all the time to try to guess hand signs,
etc, in all sports? Heck, you see people covering thier mouths while
giving plays on the sideline all the time.

No flames please. Im not defending the Pats coaching staff - Im asking
an honest question to those that are bigger sports fans than I.

TIA!
