I think the swearing is related to our upbringing, if we were brought up not to swear, then it was pretty funny when somebody did swear. Then we felt grown up when we were away from our parents, and we could swear. When we started swearing, we were grown up and we were knowledgeable about the world. So if you are interviewing somebody and they start swearing, you will then have an indication that these people have passed into adulthood, are responsible and very literate. Hire them right away. I have also noticed that your environment will indicate how often you swear, so if you are around people who swear a lot, you will swear a lot. So if you are in an interview and the person starts swearing a you will immediately know that this person hangs out with a lot of respectable, high class, and socially acceptable people. From: James Rankin [mailto:kz2...@googlemail.com] Sent: Friday, September 18, 2009 5:25 AM To: NT System Admin Issues Subject: Anti-spam solution I am currently tasked to get rid of our ineffective Symantec Mail Security which is, at the moment, our only anti-spam defense (besides Outlook's junk mail folder). We have about 500 users running on Exchange 2007 with several different domains. I have trawled the archives of the list getting some suggestions for various appliances/software/hosted solutions. I was wondering what the community considered to be the best configuration for an org of our size. Our problems with Symantec are that if it is turned down, we have too much spam getting through, and when turned up high, it is still letting enough spam through to be annoying whilst pulling out some rather important false positives. Cost is not usually too much of an issue for us (we have ESX, Citrix MPS4, XenApp, AppSense, SCOM and SCCM amongst our chunkier products), but if there is something cheaper (especially for non-profits), that could be factored in. I'd also be interested in anything that did antivirus as well, as I am not convinced by Symantec's products at all. Do most people favour the belt-and-braces solution for smaller orgs - a hosted solution or appliance at the edge and software running on Exchange? Or are there any products out there that do the job well enough on their own? From looking at the archives it seems that IronPort and the-product-formerly-known-as-Ninja are two of the most highly recommended. Does anyone have any particular recommendations for hosted solutions - MessageLabs seems to be quite highly-rated, and I'm tempted by the pricing of Google's offering. Finally, I was wondering if any of MS' products (like ForeFront) are worth a look? Sorry for rambling on, all advice, hints, tips, gratefully received and compiled. RE: Haw-haw: New Mac OS X email worm discovered (UNCLASSIFIED)
Classification: UNCLASSIFIED Caveats: FOUO No one 'invented' the English language. Celtic ( pronounced kel-tik) was the language of the people of England before the arrival of the Romans in 43 AD. The common people continued to speak Celtic while the Romans and the English nobility spoke Latin. In the four hundreds, the Romans left England. The land was taken over by Vikings from Denmark. They spoke a Germanic language. This soon mixed with the Latin. In 1066 England was conquered by French speaking people from Normandy. Now French started to become mixed with the other languages. Because French has its beginning in Latin ( lingua latina ) there was another dose of Latin injected into the Language. So, you see, English was not invented at one time, but evolved over many years. The one problem that this caused was pronouncion. People took the easiest pronouncion no matter the spelling. So now we have many words that seem to have no connection to their pronouncion. An example, the word knife, in German ( a phonetic language ) would be spelled NEIF . The original pronouncion was Kah-nee-feh. -Original Message- From: Gavin Wilby [mailto:gavin.wi...@gmail.com] Sent: Friday, May 15, 2009 2:04 PM To: NT System Admin Issues Subject: Re: Haw-haw: New Mac OS X email worm discovered Bill, A thread thats starts Haw Haw cannot hope to be considered professional, and cannot hope to get a professional response. All of our AD accounts are gradually being locked out. I have one guy searching for locked out accounts and unlocking them (and they do not get re-locked out) but with 2500 accounts this is more than a PITA. Now, this stinks of a brute force attack on an enumerated list of accounts on the network (we allow 10 attempts then lockout for 30mins), but we can't find _anything_ that looks like this. To compound matters, we have also had a small outbreak of WORM_DOWNAD.AD which has been contained and managed well, but I think this is a red herring as that worm's symptoms are nothing like what we are seeing (and there is no correlation). Does anyone know of a way to find out what processes are attempting to make a logon attempt (we have about 10 DCs spread about the place) to an account - bearing in mind it could be any one of 2500 accounts? Also, is it possible to find out where the logon attempt that caused an account lock came from? Cheers, and TIA, Andy. Our budget is extremely limited (can't nix the trebuchet as it is vital to our long term plans) and we need a content filtering solution that works and I'm considering performing a test install with SmoothWall Express 3 or Dans Guardian since they're free. Has anyone had any experience using these products or their pay counterpart SmoothWall Corporate Guardian? Cheers, Matt From: Tom Miller [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 02 September 2008 14:14 To: NT System Admin Issues Subject: Weird issue with older Dell PCs Hi Folks: We see an odd issue here with some of our Dell Optiplex machines, and one Dell Dimension. Most of these units are two years old or older. What happens is that the user turns on the machine, the fan goes into overdrive, (sounds like a 1U server starting), and then nothing. The user turns the PC off, waits 30 seconds or so, then can usually turn it on successfully. This is periodic on these problem PCs. These are GX260 and GX280 units mostly. I think the Dimension is a 4400 or similar. We haven't been able to determine the cause. Firmware is current, diagnostics run clean, too. Whatever it is the newer units don't seen to have this problem (yet). Suggestions? I was too sexy for their shirts...too sexy for my shirt...but not too sexy for my Kia. And they didn't like that I wore my sunglasses at night while driving my Little Red Corvette. So they jammed to Panama and told me they were coming back to get me. One window licker pulled his tongue off of the windshield and screamed, If I had a photograph of you...there would be something to remind me... So, with a Rebel Yell I hollered back, I want more, more, more! And I will shake you all night long! She came at me with pure energy, while turning Japanese. One dude turned up the radio, and chief let out a war cry. She howled, We're not gonna take! No! We ain't gonna take it anymore! She was coming so fast at me I thought, If she hits me, it will cut like a knife, and I wouldn't have the reflex to take these broken wings (I fell earlier in the day on my arms), and bang a gong and get it on. But I did notice that she was a pretty woman, and I thought, She's got legs... And as fast as she was running at me with her sledgehammer, I also thought, And she knows how to use them... Joe Heaton -Original Message- From: Terry Dickson [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, June 10, 2008 8:18 AM To: NT System Admin Issues Subject: RE: Workstation Power Off Policies Jacob, good info, but not always accurate. My sister sent me an interesting article last month that said the average home computer used around $50 a month in electricity when on 24X7. This article was stating the same reasons about conserving power. I agree we should all do our part, but I told her the article was wrong. And the reason I knew was that I have one computer at home that is on 24X7 for remote access when I am not there. I also have a second computer that is on only part time, and is a backup to the first. My electric bill in march was $26 and change and May's was $28 and change. That is the entire electric bill for my apartment. So you can see how I dispute all the findings. However I do have power conservation turned on both computers. They do aggressively power down monitors and even hard drives when not in use. The primary does not totally power down so I can still have remote access, but the secondary one does. -Original Message- From: Tom Strader - NCBPAC Systems Administrator [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, June 10, 2008 8:46 AM To: NT System Admin Issues Subject: RE: Workstation Power Off Policies Good points Jacob! The downside is I have 5 times the backup volume of the server on this disk, so I need to take the next step in efficiency as I will run out of space before too long. From a previous thread today I saw something called rdiff-backup, and it looked perfect as the next level I would like to go to, but, it's not for Windows.
