RE: Be Very Wary of "The Cloud"...

2011-06-27 Thread Mathew Shember
How many companies view security as an expense rather than an asset? Are
Cloud providers immune to that thinking?

As to the source code comment; basic cost savings stuff. It costs too much to
run a data center 24/7. An IT staff is costly. Disaster Recovery is costly.
The Cloud can do all the for far less..

The cloud is not an all or nothing venture. There's plenty of computing that

There are "cloud" options which also don't rely on public cloud, too.

These risks inherent with all sorts of technologies. They merely have to be

As for any source-code-in-the-cloud statements, I cannot comment without having
the context in which they were made...

RE: Server service will not start on windows 2008 R2 enterprise

We finally figured this out.

If you have a url in the PATH which references the filer, this error will
appear.

Thanks for the info, it helped.

Subject: Re: Server service will not start on windows 2008 R2 enterprise

I saw that error (ERROR_NOLOGON_WORKSTATION_TRUST_ACCOUNT, error 1808) before
when I was having some problems with logon actions. I was trying to create
shortcuts on a redirected desktop that pointed to a shared area on a NetApp
filer. For some reason, the security context seemed to be a little screwed-up.
I got around this by copying the shortcuts locally first and then moving them
to the shared area later in the logon process.

I'm a little confused as to what correlation the Server service could have with
a shared area on your filer, though - AFAIK the Server service deals with
hosting shares, rather than accessing them, that's the job of the Workstation
service - but it seems a little coincidental. Do you have folder redirection
configured in any way? Is there a drive being mapped out to the filer at login?
Is there some sort of shared storage connected to the NetApp from the server?

I also remember that this error was generated specifically when creating App-V
shortcuts using AppSense, so I don't know if you are using either of these
technologies as well.

It might be an idea to run a Process Monitor as you try and start the Server
service to see exactly what it is trying to do, and if it is trying to access a
network location in some way.

Sorry couldn't be of more help,

Is this a new install? If not, maybe a software update did it.

Also, every W2k8 server I've checked used the Local System account for the

RE: Monday morning not-so-funny

2011-02-22 Thread Mathew Shember
I had "great" service at home.

Call in a repair for the telephone line which has noise.

A DSL guy eventually appears and says they sent him because the phone people
are short staffed (layoffs) and proceeds to wipe the config on my DSL modem.

Call that in and they said a person will be out in a week. Tell them no; you
broke it you fix it now. "Can't help you" Let me talk to the manager. Get
angry with manager and a person will be out the next day.

Person never shows.

Call it in and get sent to DSL support. Can't get access to it with the
default password. Support says I have to buy a new modem because it's old.
Tell them no; your person broke it they have to repair it or replace it.
"Can't help you" Let me talk to the manager. Get angry with manager and a
person will be out the next Day.

A telephone person shows up and announces the lines are ok so DSL should work.
Duh! The modem config was wiped and the default password doesn't work!

Wife calls it in and they try to go through queue card support. Wife cuts it
off. Somebody else talks to her and tells her we have to get a new modem
because I broke it. Wife goes ballistic and asks for the director.
Person will be out today. Director gives his number.

Person never shows.

Wife calls director that evening and a very grumpy DSL person announces the
modem config was wiped and the wrong default password was given to us. Asks
who did it and proceeds to call that person up and yells at them.

DSL restored.

Side note: They had to have support tickets for both DSL and the telephone and
they made no sense from the comments section as per grumpy dsl guy. He said
they are going through hell because they laid off a large portion of the front
desk people and outsourced it to cheaper better talent.

I wonder how many elderly people and or tech illiterate people have been ripped
off with "you have to buy a new modem"

Had something like that once ... All of a sudden the internet went out in the
middle of the day. I happened to look out the front window and our internet
provider had a tent over a man hole cover. So I went out there and yelled down
the hole - Hey what the heck did you just do? Scaring the crud out of the
tech. Seems he had a drawing showing unused internet lines to cut and ours was
listed to be cut. He said he figured it was still live cuz he got one heck of
a shock from it. Luckly they fixed it sooner than later.

We all have our share of special users. Those are interesting stories. Some
of us have our share of educational victories as well. Those that learn after
getting the right information after only one or two bad experiences.

For instance, I have this thing in my kitchen that makes things hot (my wife
calls it an oven). If I have a recipe that I follow I can get an approximation
of edible food. Sometimes I get lucky and it's really good, other times it's
merely a lesson in what doesn't work. In the cooking world I am that 'special
user'. Fortunately my wife does not mock me for it, although I am beginning to
suspect a correlation between my attempts to bake and her loud sighs, I may
have to chart the occurrences.

For our special users (even our general ones), we must remember that people
learn differently and often we must craft our educational message to fit our
users ability to comprehend. Educating people on social engineering is a
rather time consuming task. Lot's to be learned from the advertising fields in
how to present the same overall message in different formats for user
consumption.

Well, since the vast majority of infections occur because of social

An analogy might be DEP, which did make some difference - that was something at
the kernel. But not a huge difference.

I would put this in the same pot.

At the end of the day, your users will still demand downloading their favorite

I've got a ton of trade publications, dating back years:

Information Week
CIO Decisions
Technet

And I'm sure a few others.

For those of you that subscribe to and read these magazines, do you see ANY
value in keeping them for any length of time after you've skimmed/read them?

Why not just invite in a bunch of VAR's, go through your needs and ask them to

And to echo others thoughts, manufacturers will obviously have an agenda,
resellers will have an agenda (to sell you something just from a bit wider
pool), and even the best meaning consultant will have a certain bias based off
what they're familiar with (not to say it won't be a good solution, but you
take the point).

I wouldn't expect you to have to be paying anyone a bean to get some detailed

As some of you may have noticed, I'm currently engaged in a battle with a
half-dead ESXi boxI'm on the verge of restoring from backup, but one last
try

Does anyone know if there is any way to copy the virtual machine files from the
ESXi "tech support mode" console onto, say, a USB drive, or somewhere else I
might be able to load them onto a fresh ESXi install (this is because I'm
betting ESXi doesn't support USB removable drives, although I am happy to be
proved wrong)? The server isn't getting onto the network and there's no shared
storage so it would have to be a "local" solution of some kind.

I'm at a new job so as I'm such a quiet guy I am not usually keen to ask too
many questions of as-yet-unfamiliar co-workers, so I'm leaning on the old
faithful mailing list pretty heavy here :-)

If no joy, I'll be pulling out the first backup tape I've ever touched in a
long, long time

TIA,

Mid-day all 500 or so of us received a "single link spam". I've had 3-4 users

Several more in the main east coast office also clicked.

We may have had more link clickers, but I frightened many by pointing out all
the nice things which can happen should one click that link (a Viagra or Rolex

Unfotunately, some of those "disk chatterings" before they closed that web page

Indeed.

I have been playing around with Vipre as well. Now with this announcement I
am going to shelve the project until things get sorted out. Even, then I am
not sure.

I have seen more than a few good companies and products to mush after
acquisition.

Oh well. Time will tell.

Subject: Spontaneous server reboots

I have an HP DL380G4 server that randomly reboots. At first I suspected an
issue with Windows. However, I booted into the BIOS and let it sit there for a
few minutes. Again at random intervals the system will reboot. Sometimes I
can't even get all the way into the BIOS.

I replaced the memory modules with new ones (twice, just to be sure) - still
reboots randomly even from the BIOS. I suspect an issue with the motherboard.
Any other possible causes, or has anyone experienced this with the G4's? It had
run for about four years prior with no issue until this started. No other
hardware changes or updates to the BIOS have been done in the last year (only
Windows patches).

Thanks in advance,

Kyle B. Plummer

DDNS on wirless or not?

2008-09-23 Thread Mathew Shember
Greetings,

The company uses windows 2003 DHCP and DNS.

There are users who use docking stations and frequently doc and undock.
In this case there are two separate IP ranges and it appears that in a
multiple dock and undock situation, DNS will be updated the first time
but will wait for lease expiration for update the next.

Is there an option to override this?

They are considering disabling the DDNS on the wireless side.

There is the ipconfig /registerdns but I think they don't want to tell
users to do that

Thank you in advance!

Hello all. I am looking for opinions on 802.11N ap's.

I am currently running 6 Linksys WAP4400N ap's and am quite disgruntled with
them. If more than a few clients are associated with them then they tend to
disconnect and power cycle themselves. The Linksys folks can't even speak
English much less solve the issue.

I am looking at either the 3Com 9550 or the Cisco 1250 series.

I would probably run 4 of them and I don't necessarily need them to be
managed, I can run them as standalone. At most there may be 15-20 clients
associated with each AP, usually probably 5-10.

Any input is appreciated in terms of:

-should I just bite the bullet and buy the $800 cisco's

-have I missed any that are worth looking at

Thanks,

That is why I build the system on the webpage, and then use the email cart
function to send it to my rep to get the real quote price. Now, I will say
I've never had the problem Chris has had getting server quotes right, but
that is because I had been using the same server rep for nearly 3 years
before he finally got bumped into a department that I can't work with. I
had the added bonus of him recommending his replacement to me.

Now we have experienced problems with general/desktop rep, and usually have
to break them in a little bit before they get used to us. I only had one of
those reps "not get it." However I used pressure from my server guy and the
management team to get transferred to the rep we currently use who is pretty
reliable about getting us the quotes we need.

I have said, and always will say that it is always a matter of *WHO* you
know when dealing with vendors.

Back when I was straight Compaq (before the merger), I sourced that stuff
from Insight because the rep I worked with there I had an over 5 year
relationship with and always knew exactly what I needed sometimes, even when
I didn't. When I came to work here, they purchased direct from TechData and
I could *NEVER* get the server configs I wanted without paying through the
nose and assembling them myself.

management card to a Vpro card, I said ok, and then when I got the quote,
and it still had the cheep ASF card. Come on!

Dell has a great online e-quote system, but for some dumb reason they have
to manually recreate/rebuild a new quote if you want it in the other html
quote format - which is what you need if you want any sort of discount taken
off.

Sorry just wanted to vent.

For some reason it seems that none of the vendors we deal with can get a
quote correct. Not once, never. We primarily deal with Dell, both US and
Canada. We also use HP and have multiple lease vendors. None of them ever
get a quote right the first time. For example if I send them something like
this:

Please give me a quote for (2) PowerEdge 1950 servers with the following:

(2) Dual Core 3.0GHz Xeon Processors
8GB RAM
(2) 146GB Hard drives (RAID 1)
DRAC 5/I card
(2) Emulex LPe11002-E HBA adapters (A1663181)
Gold Support
NetIQ AppManager
NetIQ AppManager Maintenance
PowerPath licenses
Windows 2003 Server Enterprise

I will get back a quote that might have 4G RAM instead of 8. Or no DRAC
card, or have the wrong quantity of HBA cards. Every time it happens we
bring it to the attention of our account executive and they swear they will
resolve the issue. They don't. Then 2 months later the account executive is
replaced or has moved on and a new one comes on board, or the person that
generates the quotes leaves the company. I would just love to have a simple
quote done correctly the first time.

How is the central manager aspects of it?

I looked at it awhile ago and they had just released it and it was not up to
the level it needed to be...

Subject: RE: Kaspersky AV

We've got about 600 PC's and 40 Servers covered by the Kaspersky Antivirus
business suite at the moment, overall they're pretty good:

- Very aggressive pricing

- Fairly light on resources

- Quick response from the KAV UK support team

- The russian based developers often contribute in the Kaspersky Forums (and
even might give 1-1 help)

- Easy access to beta products, with feedback and new feature requests
wanted via the Kaspersky Forums.

- Really coming to market by giving away Consumer edition freebies to users
through banks, newspapers etc.

Could do better:

-Admin console a bit clunky when using Slave admin servers (might be redone
in the new version of the Admin Kit currently in beta)

- Have had 2 'fatal' updates pushed out in the last 3 years or so requiring
manual intervention

Anyone using or familar with Kaspersky's AV business products suites?

I am considering a shift for some of my customers from Trend or Symantec to
there products as they support a managed environment on both peer to peer
and Domain environments. They are very agressive in their upgrade pricing
and the renewals are much less than Symantec.

I hope someone on the list had some first hand knowledge with them and felt
comfortable recommending the product and their support services.

Re: DCOM corrupted?

2008-01-28 Thread Mathew Shember

It is automatic and set to service.

When I tried a domain account it blew up saying it was different from
other processes.

I am taking a guess that it may be security on some folders?

Do you know where could I find what they should be?

Re: Cisco question...

Sometimes the autonegotiate does not work right.

We had similar problems with some Solaris boxes.

You might also try hard coding the duplex mode

Re: Outsourcing IT Operations

2001-08-14 Thread Mathew Shember

Not passing judgement on Benjamin's company, but one thing to watch is what
I call the slight of hand trick. Some outsourcing companies will "wow" you
with their technical talent but after you sign the contracts; you end up
with people with little training.

Becareful with your contracts!

You don't always get trained people and I have heard many people complain
about "sure they are there but they either don't care about the company or
they mess things up worst then they were"

Just my .02
