If they lose work - then learn not to leave it locked.

This exactly! As we use DeepFreeze in the labs, this is also how our
students remember to not save to the desktop.

No on the student login. We use a generic account per classroom.

We’ve talked about moving to a individual student login, but I’m not sure
 we need or want that.

For others that have gone that route, how do you handle situations where
students don’t logout before they leave.

You either have a locked computer, logged on as said student or if not
locked, then student 2 has access to student 1’s account.

*Sure so scenarios where you’re teaching classes that require changes to
the OS to accomplish the class makes good sense and I’d not argue against a
solution like DeepFreeze in that case.*

*In the case of things like wallpaper and user profile stuff, are you not
using named user accounts for your students? That solves a bunch of this on
 the spot. *

We teach classes and let the students make any and all changes to the
 desktop environment.

Here’s one example. Student comes in and sets the desktop wallpaper to
his favorite pinup gal. Next student doesn’t like it, but is a beginner
and doesn’t know how to change it to something else. Reboot and the pin up
 gal is gone.

Also, I’ve seen some programs/apps that can now be installed without admin
 rights, Google Chrome for example.

Not a problem with Deep Freeze.

 ** **

I’m sure there are other ways to do this, but DeepFreeze works great in
 our environment.

I am replacing with Windows 7 Pro that need to be locked down.

Can anyone suggest a product that does the same thing, wipe out any

Re: same IP printer - two different print servers

2011-08-12 Thread Vicky Spelshaus
Thanks again everyone... turns out I'm going to have to set them up sooner
than later after all. The former print server finally died of old age this
morning. The good news though is that it also means I can finally retire
the 4 external modems that provided dial up. Yes - I seriously had faculty
and staff using dial up!

We didn't change the printernames to keep things easier for the users.

The only real issue I see is that your helpdesk might get some calls after
the old printer server is retired. I have done this type of thing many times
for our schools. Not sure how you have the students and staff access the
printers, we would put shortcuts into the start menu for them to use based
upon what there home school was. Then last year we setup the printer
shortcut to run a VB script that got the location IP information and then
based upon the the groups they were in would then bring up only the printers
at the location they were at. But if they have installed the printer from
the old server they just have to add the one from the new server, but still
a pain for the helpdesk if the staff is at least not sent an email about the
 change.

Comcast was a pain in the beginning getting it installed as there “tech’s”

Part of my motivation for changing jobs is for me to explore whether

IP range for labs

2011-01-10 Thread Vicky Spelshaus
Please forgive me if I'm asking a stupid question... not enough coffee yet.

I have a situation where one of the professors wants to keep students from
cheating by restricting access to online quizes using the IP addresses of
the classroom workstations. She can do this with the software.

Here is my problem - not surprisingly I'm using a DHCP server. I refuse to
give over half the campus static IP addresses. I could reserve them, but
they won't be in a nice seqential order like she wants. Is there another
option I am missing?

Re: IP range for labs

2011-01-10 Thread Vicky Spelshaus
More information:

It would be approximately 150 machines. I'm one of only 2 people supporting
about 150 faculty/staff and over 1000 students, appromimately 450 machines,
the network infrastructure, phone system, security cameras, copiers, help
desk, training, distance ed class schedule (proctoring and remote instructor
support) - basically everything using electricity. Needless to say we are
stretched VERY thin.

This campus is one of 13 supported by a central office. They 'assigned' our
IP structure. xxx.xxx.200.xxx is 'reserved' for static IPs and 201-203 is
set for distribution. I don't have enough addresses in the 200 range to
use. If I reserved - in order as she wants - within the distribution
ranges, what would happen if I tried to assign an IP that was already in
use? Would DHCP release that IP automatically or would I need to go aroung
rebooting machines?

Again sorry if I'm asking dumb questions. It's been awhile since I even
looked at DHCP.

Why not? Couldn’t you reserve the range for her classroom and assign IP
Addresses to individual MAC addresses in whatever order she wants? (I’m
assuming you mean that she essentially wants IP addresses assigned in some
kind of order that is in relation to the way the room is physically laid
 out?)

…Aside from the fact that in doing so you would be setting a precedent.
This may or may not be a good thing for your sanity, depending on how big of

The “Security Tools” malware is about to drive me insane. My users keep
managing to infect themselves with it, and we’re having trouble stopping it.

They don’t run with admin rights, so there’s no real damage done to their
systems and we can clean it up in about two minutes. But the time adds up,
and I’m tired of my technicians having to waste time on it.

Our antimalware software is Microsoft’s Forefront Client Security, and it’s
having a tough time catching this. Every time I get infected, I send the EXE
to Microsoft and they update their definitions—but the EXE’s used by the
malware apparently change rapidly, and seem to constantly be a step ahead of
 FCS’s definitions.

I can think of a couple of options that I know would stop it, like blocking
all EXE’s at our web filter or using group policy to limit the running of
EXE’s—but this would also prevent users from doing things like installing
safe plug-ins from websites, so it’s not a first resort.

 Suggestions?

Really? My netbook cost less than $300.00, and I'd take that over a

I'm a touch typist, and *cannot* wrap my mind around a phone-sized device.

Plus, if it's a one-liner response to something, a phone call will suffice.

Wow Evan did you really say We’re looking to move to either Symantec?!
I'd do anything to get off that worthless POS. Unfortunately I don't get the
last say as to what we are told to use. In over 12 years I could count on
one hand the number of infected/compromised computers on campus. Since
going to Symancrap, it seems all I do is clean and re-image infected
computers. And yes - they have the most current DATs. Doesn't matter. It
isn't catching/cleaning much of anything.

I run Vipre on the machines I'm in charge of away from my daytime job.

I agree, Steve. I can’t keep Vipre running, either. Half the time I look,

server, the service hasn’t been running for who knows how long. I know I
should check it every day or hour or something, but in a small company with
very limited staff (staff = me,) there isn’t the time to babysit it. We’re
looking to move to either Symantec or go back to Trend next year.

I wish I could be more optimistic, but We are using the Vipre Enterprise.
It does an excellent job of protecting us, when I can keep it running. It
seems like it just is not ready for primetime. Sunbelt had their top tech go
through our entire network setup during a recent Konficker attack, and it is
 still not really stable.

I can look at the console and believe it is running wonderfully, until
scans start without any identifiable cause, effectively shutting down
servers with 100% Cpu usage, but that scan never shows up on the remote
console, although the machines are sending last contact info, and last scan
info, the off time scans never show up. I lobbied hard to get Vipre, and
really want it to succeed, but it is not looking good at this time. A deep
scan starts on many machines as soon as anyone logs onto the machine, and
that will also peg the CPU meter. No reason we can tell for this to happen.

I believe this is more an indictment of the low quality of journalism
nowadays. It's little more than a rant on his employer's IT policies. In
no instance does he discuss the measured effect of IT policies might have
within an organization. He makes vague allusions to the productivity gains
users could acheive if allowed to use any software they felt necessary to do

valid reasons for constraining users ability to install shiny new software
in order to be more productive.

called monovision correction, this is where one eye is corrected for
distance and the other is corrected for reading. 7 hours after the surgery
I was seeing 20/15 for distance and could read the smallest line on the
reading test. I had absolutely no adjustment time needed for the
 monovision.

Sorry for the OT, but several people wanted to know how it worked out for

 Have a great Friday!!

 Hi all,

We have an Optiplex that is mysteriously rebooting by itself.. We change a
setting of the Intel MT NIC, motherboard and reinstall OS (RedHat 5.x).

We suspect that it could be the CPU that is rebooting the machine before
it could get burnt or maybe a failing power supply.

Do you guys know of any live CD (Windows or linux based) to run a stress
test on the CPU? (it's a quad core)

  Thanks,

I got the interview was because I has to dumb down my resume. Did not get

barely get 5 to apply.Recruiters are no help.

I do have family in the Dallas area, and got a couple hits from companies

So.. it is now August. My savings is dried up and my wife makes $40,000 a

reducing costs any and every way they can. I don’t see this trend ending for
 a few years to come.

Like its been said before for those that get raises ( Ours have been frozen
too, and possibly for longer for just this year) along with the raise in
paying more for your benefits, less in the 401K, 403B, and no training
budget) be happy you have a job and a roof over your head, it could be a lot
 worse, and quiet quickly..

I agree use the opportunity to stand out, put in the time, (and we all know
it isn’t a 40 hr work week, you are lucky if you get away with 60-70 hrs a
week now a days) learn all you can learn with new technologies, and bide
 your time.

Websense Security Labs(TM) ThreatSeeker(TM) Network has discovered spam
emails offering recipients links to unpublished videos and pictures of
singer Michael Jackson. According to news
 reportshttp://edition.cnn.com/2009/SHOWBIZ/Music/06/25/michael.jackson/index.htmlMichael
  Jackson's death was confirmed yesterday.

The spam email appears to offer a link to a YouTube video, but instead
sends the recipient to a Trojan Downloader hosted on a compromised Web site.
The file offered is called *Michael.Jackson.videos.scr* (MD5:
664cb28ef710e35dc5b7539eb633abca). This file is located on a legitimate Web
site hosted in Australia belonging to a radio broadcasting station. Upon
executing the file, a legitimate Web site at
 http://musica.uol.com.br/ultnot/2009/06/25/michael-jackson.jhtm is opened
by the default browser in order to distract the user by presenting a news
 article for them to read.

In the background, three further information-stealing components are
downloaded and installed by the malware. One of the downloaded files is
called *michael.gif*, which has low AV detection rates - see VT results
 herehttp://www.virustotal.com/analisis/67cba7b9d91e1cbcac0f22b5f4bcf12f4b07a1a62d7d3018e28ccd5ee93e0ce4-1246012313.
The malware then installs a malicious BHO that is registered with this file
 *%windir%/Dynamic.dll* and this GUID

Is there any way to only allow specific user accounts to logon to a specific

I'm also the backup for the only other IT person on campus who is in charge
of the Distance Education classes. So between two of us, we do all the
networking, PC hardware and software support, server support, compressed
video and conferencing support and proctoring for all the students on our
campus taking distance ed classes as well as the online only students local
to our area. Oh - and did I mention we do the phones as well?

The only thing that keeps me going every day is I actually enjoy what I do

Now that is a novel idea! I wish ours did. He is allowing staff to come
and go at will, not show up at all for days, and use company time to
browse the Internet without any controls. I have one user that to put it
lightly likes young ladies but as long as no one see's it on any of his
systems no comment is made. No it is not illegal what he is looking at but
there are limits to comments I have heard out of him. All but a few of the
staff enjoy those perks. Less than a third of the entire staff get quized
if we call in sick and as far as not showing they call us at home even on
vacations. Sour grapes maybe but try being told to reschedule vacations and
doctors appointments because you are needed at the office only to show up

fill up their 100gb drives with MP3s, I tell them 'tough beens' and they
have to trim down. Yes, my mailboxes are huge (2-11GB), but haven't found a

Things aren't any better in Wisconsin my job is okay (for now), but I've
taken a pay cut every contract the last 6 years. During the good years
when many people where getting double-digit raises, we settled for no more
than 3% with the understandng that they wouldn't touch our benefits. Well,
when the state budget hit the fan, they started making us pay for our
insurance despite the agreements made by past administrations. As I said,
for the last 3 contracts the raise (if I even got one) didn't cover the
raise in my insurance fees. That said - I'm still here 'cause even with
what I've lost I'm still ahead of others and the IT market here is not good

I work for the state of California, and just narrowly dodged layoffs. My
union has agreed to a 4.62% paycut (one day salary), from now through June
2010. I still fear that Ahnold will come back and say it’s not enough, and
layoffs are still needed, but I do have some protection from that now. Also
in the Tentative Agreement with the union is that our members cannot be laid
off unless the agency we work for is eliminated, or the facilities we work
at are closed. Even then, because of the agreement, they will give me
another job… within 10% of my current salary, and within 50 miles of my
home. So, theoretically, I could end up taking another 10% cut and
increasing my drive to work from 6.5 miles to 50…

Joy, oh Joy…hanging on by my fingertips.

They never got an order correct or to us in one piece during the 7 years we

In the last 2 days at the same time in the morning, our print server's
spooler seems to be causing problems. People report that they can't print.
When we checked a couple of application servers, we found the spooler
service had stopped running. Restarting it did not help UNTIL we
stopped/restarted the spooler on the print server.

I am at a loss trying to figure out what is causing this. I have
eliminated anti-virus programs and backup program as neither is impacting
the print server at the time the system fails.

If anybody has any ideas, my thanks in advance.

I agree. Funny thing though, it seems like this is not so much the norm
any longer, at least in recent history. Most of the techies I meet nowadays
have some kind of outside interests, not related to IT at all. I still run
into one once in awhile who has a home network that they play on for 4 hours
a night after working their day job. I can't do that, I would get burned
out. Yeah, I have pretty much every game system available today (have 2

there's sports on, it's on my TV. If it's decent outside, I'm out there
doing something. My favorite activity is crawling over big rocks in my Jeep.
 I don't think I've seen a Star Trek episode/movie in 25 years.

2008-08-29 Thread Vicky Spelshaus
[EMAIL PROTECTED] girl, now I am going to have bad 80s music running thru my
head all
night long... :-)

Ok, so lets have a little fun here on the last Friday in August. There are
at least 45 songs mentioned in this story, most from the 80's. The rules:

 1. Name the song title
 2. Name the artist
 3. No cheating. Do this from memory. Don't Google or use any other
 internet resource for your answers.
 4. Have fun!!

I'll post the answers when it looks like all guessing is done.

Disclaimer: I didn't write this, it is from a gaming forum that I'm a
member of, but I was the winner because I managed to find all the songs.

The window lickers went on strike yesterday. I was too sexy for their
shirts...too sexy for my shirt...but not too sexy for my Kia. And they
didn't like that I wore my sunglasses at night while driving my Little Red
Corvette. So they jammed to Panama and told me they were coming back to get
me. One window licker pulled his tongue off of the windshield and screamed,
If I had a photograph of you...there would be something to remind me...
So, with a Rebel Yell I hollered back, I want more, more, more! And I will
shake you all night long! So I jammed in my fast machine that I keep the
motor clean, and it looks like I will be dancing with myself for awhile.
This situation is spinning right 'round...like a record baby...'round,
'round. You don't mess with a missionary man! I know, I know. I hear you
dudes - I need to relax and don't do it, but what if I want to go through
 it?

The shortbusians need to know that I am the king of rock, there is none
higher, and all their MC's will call me sire...and that to rock my kingdom
they must use fire, cause I won't stop rock'in 'til I retire! Until then,
they can listen to me on the Mexican Radio as they drive to Panama, and
listen in stereo. Besides, they all wear pink and live in pink houses. I
know they look pretty in pink, and I tell them all of the time dudes, what
I like about you, is that you are the sultans of swing. But I wear my
sunglasses at night because you freaks are blinding me with science.

Chief window licker stopped the car and pulled out a sledgehammer, she is a
goody two shoes, but had a look in her eyes that creeped me out. I think
she was thinking about burning down the house. She came at me with pure
energy, while turning Japanese. One dude turned up the radio, and chief let
out a war cry. She howled, We're not gonna take! No! We ain't gonna take
it anymore! She was coming so fast at me I thought, If she hits me, it
will cut like a knife, and I wouldn't have the reflex to take these broken
wings (I fell earlier in the day on my arms), and bang a gong and get it
on. But I did notice that she was a pretty woman, and I thought, She's
got legs... And as fast as she was running at me with her sledgehammer, I
also thought, And she knows how to use them...

In conclusion, I grabbed the little mite, unleashed some TNT on her, and
said, I will rock you like a hurricane dude! I would walk 500 miles on your
forehead and toss you under the last train to Clarksville! You are now
loosing your religion and there ain't no sunshine when she's gone, there
ain't no mountain high enough for you to be safe! Ya dig, der kommisar?

So they turned and went their way, and I my way. we crossed a bridge over
troubled waters and will get back to normal soon. Man, everybody wants to
rule the world, they want to be their own personal Jesus. We took one last
look at each other I, as I smiled at her, I said, Hey chief, good girls
don't...got it. I think her name is Roxanne.

Re: Home folder

2008-06-26 Thread Vicky Spelshaus
I'd be very interested if you find a solution to this. I had the same
problem a while back - never found the solution or the reason it was
happening - it just went away by itself so I called it another 'undocumented
Microsoft feature'.

On Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 8:11 AM, Mayo, Bill [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

For as long as I remember, I have populated the drive letter and network
path for the Home Folder attribute in AD. We also perform this mapping in
the logon script, which is at least partially redundant. We have been
having a problem with this drive letter mapping to the top level of the
share, instead of all the way to the user's folder. In researching the
issue, I have found reports of this being a bug (e.g.
 http://www.techsupportforum.com/microsoft-support/windows-nt-2000-2003-server/145050-home-folder-active-directory.html
 ).

Since we are already setup to do this in the logon script, I would like to
remove the attribute from AD. To make sure that there are no unintended
consequences, I tried to research whether this attribute might control/do
something other than just the drive letter. I found something indicating it
affected an environment variable, but it didn't sound like anything that
would cause a problem. Unfortunately, my google-fu is weak and I haven't
been able to find enough info to discount the possibility that it will
 create a (new/different) problem.

Can anyone confirm if this attribute does anything other than a drive
letter mapping? Any other impact from changing the selection to local
 path and leaving that blank?

OT: Intel core 2 duo mobile processors

2008-05-14 Thread Vicky Spelshaus
Can anyone on this list tell me if it is worth it to configure a notebook
running XP w/2Gb from the 'standard' Intel Core 2 Duo T7250 (2.00GHz) 2M L2
cache to an Intel Core 2 Duo T9500 (2.6GHz) 6M L2 cache? I can't find any
benchmarks that compare/show the T7250 and T9500 and I'm wondering if given
the fact that it won't be used for anything all that demanding, if it's
worth the cost.

Thanks in advance

Easier than a snow shovel in Wisconsin I've always wondered what people

Like shook said, get some fans, sucking the hot air up from the rear
into the plenum/ceiling or something, and fresh air from someplace else.

Luckily, most places carry AC units already. Try to get a AC unit in

experience with this program? Or are there others which I should consider?

If we were to implement this, I would like to have the following features:

 1. Robust security
 2. Adheres to MS Filesystem quotas.
 3. Good logging. I want to know who's account downloaded which file at
 what time using which IP.
 4. Protection from Brute Force attacks. If a brute force is detected, I
would like to be informed, and the attempts to be automatically blocked.

I'm hoping somebody on this list knows of some software which does this

be interested in those as well.

 Thanks all.

My server room has it's own ac unit - it isn't tied in any way to the
campus HVAC system so I have no way of monitoring the temp in the room
unless I'm here. Well - last night it tripped the circuit breaker and it
was a balmy 90+ degrees when I came in to work. Thank goodness nothing
 failed.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a basic sensor that can email my
pager if the temp goes past a certain threshold? I don't need a camera or
humidity/fire sensor - just temperature. It's in a secure enough location
and if it's on fire or flooded there won't be anything I can do anyway.
This isn't a major data center - it's just a room with 3 racks of servers
and a data rack. That said - we run on less than a shoestring budget and I
can't risk having this happen again.

Re: installing printers setting default

It's an ugly workaround, but I did this by having a batch file in the All

I have tried to use a vbs script to set the default printer (code below).
But the issue with that is that the script need to be applied to the user

someone can fill me in on.

 Dim objPrinter

 objPrinter.SetDefaultPrinter \\calgary\MS Lab Black_White Ricoh

As a test, I have also tried installing printers via a vbs logn script to
the computer OUs and that work well also, but the default printer can't be
 set.

 Set WshNetwork = CreateObject(WScript.Network)
 WshNetwork.AddWindowsPrinterConnection \\calgary\MS Lab Black_White
 Ricoh
 WshNetwork.AddWindowsPrinterConnection \\calgary\MS Lab Color Ricoh
 WshNetwork.SetDefaultPrinter \\calgary\MS Lab Black_White Ricoh

OT: anyone out there w/HP ProCurve Manager and NAV?

2008-01-02 Thread Vicky Spelshaus
I know this is very off-topic for this list, but I'm hoping someone out
there can keep me from having to do research/work :-)

Our Central office just informed us they are not renewing our McCrappy
contract and are instead forcing us to go to even crappier Symantec. The
only server I've got that has enough room to install the management server
is already running HP ProCurve Manager (v b.02.100) and Identity Manager to
manage our wireless network. I know that McAfee's manager had port conflict
issues w/WSUS and so before I even begin I'm wondering if I'll run into
conflicts having NAV and PCM on the same server. I know I can install a
virtual server and not have to worry, but the server isn't exactly 'beefy'
and neither is my budget.
