RE: [LIST ADMIN MESSAGE] your friends will envy you
I am guessing a spam filter in between us and Lyris would break Lyris? Not too concerned about the few spams we have gotten, just curious. -Original Message- From: Stu Sjouwerman [mailto:s...@sunbelt-software.com] Sent: Tuesday, July 12, 2011 2:18 PM To: NT System Admin Issues Subject: [LIST ADMIN MESSAGE] your friends will envy you Here is what Donald came back with: On Jun 28, 2011 @ 11:59 am, Donald Bittenbender wrote: After analyzing the Lyris settings, I see one level of spam filter checking Lyris does by default is SPF checking. Currently the server is set to reject on SPF fail, however, if it takes more than 30 seconds to do the SPF lookup, the server is currently allowing the initial message to come through. We can set this to be stricter and wait for the SPF lookup to complete, but I'm not sure what effect that will have on message flow. Currently an email confirmation is required to join the list, so that has already been setup to try to deflect spam. Obviously some bots probably are programmed to go around this by auto confirming their email. Past the SPF checking, I have no other spam fightning options. No keyword blocking available to me. The spam blocking abilities of Lyris out of box are fairly limited, and we are out of contract so no way to contact them about any other possible options. For now these 2 users will be blocked by email addres s to make sure they don't spam again, but that doesn't help in the long-run of things. Every single one of these people had a DNS lookup failure by Lyris (the hiccup). When this hiccup occurred, Lyris started using mxs1.fides.com (66.45.246.210) as the mail server, which denied relay. According to information, it all goes back to http://www.telnetcom.us/ I'm wondering if this was some sort of routing problem on the 28th of October, but that's when everyone's emails failed to deliver. It seem to occur in the morning all the way through the afternoon on that day until things started working again. Not sure why everyone just now got the hold messages. Being on this list for several years I was a little surprised it went that long, however, I also noticed that while people (including myself) were very heated in their feelings, that it was kept professional, and kudos to that. RE: [LIST ADMIN MESSAGE[] RE: Re: So... how is the recession affecting your buying decisions?
We are expected to have a conversation about the recession WITHOUT bringing up politics? They go hand and hand. Let me remind you that is was Sunbelt that triggered the question, which I do think was a great, thoughtful question. Personally, I get tired of everyone's impatience and intolerance for political conversations. This election, and the state of our economy is an urgent matter right now. I know this list is supposed to be IT related, but we have many peers in this list. We should be taking the time right now to talk to our peers about the economy and the direction of our country. It seems odd to me that the gross sexual innuendoes on this list are perfectly acceptable, but politics aren't. There are ONLY 5 days till the election. I say we lighten up on the rules for a bit until the election is over :) IMO. Then we can go back to our regular scheduled programming. If you can't stand the heat, don't follow the thread. RE: [LIST ADMIN MESSAGE[] RE: Re: So... how is the recession affecting your buying decisions?
I love politics and love talking about the issues and the candidates. However, the issue is a pragmatic one: Sunbelt manages a lot of professional lists, and generally, political and religious discussions are banned because they a) create an enormous amount of off-topic banter, b) they inevitably end up with personal insults and hurt feelings and c) they go against the original purpose of the professional list (in this case, to share information on IT issues). There are great places to get into political discussions -- my personal observation (and those of many others) is that this type of dialog shouldn't be permitted on professional lists simply for practical reasons. If this group allows more political discussion, we will create a few vicious enemies and lots of hurt feelings. For what reason? For an honest and open dialog? No, it's nothing like that. It's simply inviting list anarchy. You should only need one rule: Anything sent to [EMAIL PROTECTED] should get moved to the folder of your choosing. [text] added to the subject line munge up some other things, and we had them removed over a year ago. Alternately, if you are an Exchange user, sub a public folder to the list to receive all the mail, and then sub yourself with the nomail option. Read it from the PF and respond from your own account. RE: [ LIST ADMIN MESSAGE ] Unsubs
Tim, Let me welcome you aboard. As a far less experienced admin than the majority on this list, I've found this list to be an invaluable resource. However, I would recommend that don't give up searching common support sites simply because this list has so many experienced people. You'll find that you'll get results/answers much faster if you ask your question only after spending at least some time searching for it yourself. And believe me, they can tell whether or not you've tried to solve the problem yourself ;o) Regards, Sean Martin, MCSE Network Administrator Ribelin Lowell Company Insurance Brokers, Inc. 3111 C Street, Suite 300 Anchorage, Alaska 99503 Ph: (907) 561-1250 Fax: (907) 561-4315 Cell: (907) 229-0885 Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] -Original Message- From: Tim Tullis [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Wednesday, September 26, 2001 9:39 AM To: NT System Admin Issues Subject: RE: [ LIST ADMIN MESSAGE ] Unsubs As a struggling NT Admin I appreciate him posting the link to subscribe. Uh, yesterday afternoon, Stu suggested that we end the current thread re:the WTC subject. At least that's the way I understood him. So, I stopped posting on that subject. RE: [LIST ADMIN MESSAGE] NY ATTACK
Don, I certainly hope you are not suggesting that all Canadians are ignorant. I am Canadian and take offence to you stereotyping a complete country. As for the events that have taken place in the U.S., I have been watching in shock and horror. My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone who has been touched by this. I came across the following news item and hope it is appropriate to share here as it echoes my feelings and I'm sure those of many , many others. This, from a Canadian newspaper, America: The Good Neighbor. Widespread but only partial news coverage was given recently to a remarkable editorial broadcast from Toronto by Gordon Sinclair, a Canadian television commentator. What follows is the full text of his trenchant remarks as printed in the Congressional Record: This Canadian thinks it is time to speak up for the Americans as the most generous and possibly the least appreciated people on all the earth. Germany, Japan and, to a lesser extent, Britain and Italy were lifted out of the debris of war by the Americans who poured in billions of dollars and forgave other billions in debts. None of these countries is today paying even the interest on its remaining debts to the United States. When France was in danger of collapsing in 1956, it was the Americans who propped it up, and their reward was to be insulted and swindled on the streets of Paris. I was there. I saw it. When earthquakes hit distant cities, it is the United States that hurries in to help. This spring, 59 American communities were flattened by tornadoes. Nobody helped. The Marshall Plan and the Truman Policy pumped billions of dollars into discouraged countries. Now newspapers in those countries are writing about the decadent, warmongering Americans. I'd like to see just one of those countries that is gloating over the erosion of the United States dollar build its own airplane. Does any other country in the world have a plane to equal the Boeing Jumbo Jet, the Lockheed Tri-Star, or the Douglas DC10? If so, why don't they fly them? Why do all the International lines except Russia fly American Planes? Why does no other land on earth even consider putting a man or woman on the moon? You talk about Japanese technocracy, and you get radios. You talk about German technocracy, and you get automobiles. You talk about American technocracy, and you find men on the moon - not once, but several times - and safely home again. You talk about scandals, and the Americans put theirs right in the store window for everybody to look at . Even their draft-dodgers are not pursued and hounded. They are here on our streets, and most of them, unless they are breaking Canadian laws, are getting American dollars from ma and pa at home to spend here. When the railways of France, Germany and India were breaking down through age, it was the Americans who rebuilt them. When the Pennsylvania Railroad and the New York Central went broke, nobody loaned them an old caboose. Both are still broke. I can name you 5000 times when the Americans raced to the help of other people in trouble. Can you name me even one time when someone else raced to the Americans in trouble? I don't think there was outside help even during the San Francisco earthquake. Our neighbors have faced it alone, and I'm one Canadian who is damned tired of hearing them get kicked around. They will come out of this thing with their flag high. And when they do, they are entitled to thumb their nose at the lands that are gloating over their present troubles. I hope Canada is not one of those. I wanted to pass this info along to you. Amazon is collecting for the Red Cross. Their home page (www.amazon.com), the main way they have of generating revenue, is dedicated to a link to this donation site they have. They are absorbing the credit card costs, and current Amazon customers can use 1-click to give, which makes it really fast and easy. They have collected over $2.3 million (and counting) since the 11th, with an average gift of only $32.50 - the power of the Internet at work. I am encouraging everyone I know to make a donation and support Amazon afterwards. I think it is a testament to the people that are part of the technology industry as a whole and that company in particular that they would make an effort like this. Never let it be said that our generation isn't up to the challenges that we face. Here is the direct link: http://www.amazon.com/paypage/PKAXFNQH7EKCX If you hit refresh, the collection results are real-time and increase every moment. In the last 30 minutes or so I have seen them collect about $100k - WOW! Pass this along if you are so moved. RE: [LIST ADMIN MESSAGE] NY ATTACK
I didn't get to see much of the footage of the events yesterday. I actually saw a clip of the plane flying into the WTC. I can -not- believe it. That whole scene looks like something out of the movie 'Independence Day'. The amount of dust resembles that of a volcanic eruption. Pretty sure I was in a state of disbelief yesterday, don't think I really realized the magnitude of what had happened. In my 20 years on this earth I've never seen anything like that. Sure made for an uncomfortable elevator ride this morning to the 31st floor Just for the record, I was never criticizing the US president. I was referring to what I've frequently heard him described as up here (not necessarily MY view, just that of others). Regardless, I have a tremendous amount of respect for someone in his position right about now. M. Binette Cybertech Automation Inc. http://www.sunbelt-software.com/ntsysadmin_list_charter.htm

As life gets back underway, the list has been getting back on topic. There are still some off-topic threads going on, but I personally don't have a problem with it at this point. I feel confident that they'll continue to taper off, and by Monday I would imagine that things will be fairly well back to normal on the list. We understand that you want to discuss this issue, but that emotions can easily get the upper hand. It is OK to discuss the attack on this list, but I have to insist to keep the discussion civil. (violators will be taken off the list). Life will not be the same after this. From the viewpoint of a system admin, you will get much more focus on disaster recovery. Prepare for questions from your management. The best way to handle attacks like these is to show the terrorists you keep our head cool, keep life going, and show them no one can get you down. I'm sure the US government is going to find out who is responsible and hit them hard.
