Perl can do this with the proper Win32 modules. It can detect
file/directory changes without doing a scheduled scan.

Does anyone knows of any application can do this?

 Thanks.

Dammit - I knew while I was typing that I was gonna have to answer
that question. And its a good question too. But I dont remember the
answer off-hand. :-/

But we (my Perl developer) did create a very similar routine in Perl a
few years back for a custom file-transfer back-end for an FTP site at
a previous employer.

Amusingly it was a couple of years before I became actively interested
in Perl myself - so I didnt pay much attention to the details at the
time.

I'll see if I cant dig something up.

Nobody really mentioned the requirement or 'detecting changes'...

SyncBack SE can do this that. Detect changes, and run a Sync/Backup
job. Or really anything else for that matter...

For $30, it's the most versatile and handy program I have ever used. I
use for about 150 different backup jobs, including all my desktops and
laptops.

I've plugged it on this list many times, but there is not an affiliation

Hi All,

I have met up with the client today with the requirement on the desktop
backup.

His requirement is once the file has been saved, the backup
application will detect the change and will replicate the file to the
shared storage. I know this can be done on SAN but I have never heard of
it in desktop.

Does anyone knows of any application can do this?

Thanks.

Wei Yu

Not knocking you or your suggestion...just pointing out that we did cover
changes with robocopy. We just didn't mention it specifically. /mon and it
watches for changes...there are a lot of switch options in robocopy to
cover the scenario.

Nobody really mentioned the requirement or 'detecting changes'...
SyncBack SE can do this that. Detect changes, and run a Sync/Backup job. Or
really anything else for that matter...

For $30, it's the most versatile and handy program I have ever used. I use for
about 150 different backup jobs, including all my desktops and laptops.

I've plugged it on this list many times, but there is not an affiliation :)

My suggestion detects changes...albeit, not for $30. :) I love SyncBack for

But I suppose if you go back to his original requirement of running this on

Thanks for all the suggestions. I forgot to mention, the client want the
changes to be sync immediately and not wait for the next scheduled. I have
tried telling him to use offline folders or VSS but seems like he is not
interested. He wanted a solution from some branded company like Symantec, CA
etc.

The main issue is his request of sync immediately to the shared storage which
I find it difficult to achieve.

Better would be a service that registers for file change notifications (so you
don't have continuous monitoring activity) and then copies the data elsewhere.

More sophisticated (but requiring a far degree of skill) would be to create a
file system filter that did the operation transparently as the file was being
written to disk.

On the Desktops if the OS is Vista there is a way to schedule backups to a
network share. I have been setting it up after a Director lost all of his
email and contact information to a system board and hard drive failures.
For those that start yelling about why the contacts and mail was not on the
Exchange server we are just now getting Exchange we were running one of the
Linux mail servers and we had to do POP. Going forward at this point his
contacts as well as the other Directors will have contacts on the Exchange
server and if they want they can pull a copy for their PST later.

illegal copy of music files on your network. Does the client want to back
those up? Too much resources are required to accomplish a task that I think
it is not necessary or practical.

Workstations=Use one single ghost image for identical machines. Same for
laptops. If the client runs Vista then you don't even need that many images.
Perhaps one for workstations and one for laptops.

Enable Shadow Copy on file servers and redirect My Documents folder to
the network with GPO. Someone deleted a file it takes a few seconds to
restore it from yesterday. If a machine dies, reimage.

At a bare minimum you are going to consume at least 1 TB. It could be

Let's re-ask the 'what does the client want to backup question again'.

Is the issue getting my documents and the desktop?...might be better to
redirect those and and set the laptops up to use offline folders..hide
the C drive from the users so they can't make out of the way folders.

Yes. You would certainly want some kind of deduplication technology to save
space and bandwidth. There would most likely be a lot of redundant bits in
there.

RE: Desktop Backup

2008-05-02 Thread Joe Heaton
I'm curious as to why users would have data on their desktop machines, anyway.
Why not redirect to server shares? For instance, we redirect everyone's My
Documents folder, and setup the default save directories for Office, to the
users' home directories on our file server. Then we back up those folders. A
lot easier than trying to have a backup software access 1000+ separate machines
each night.

Redirecting PST's, in my case, is VERY bad and also not recommended but then
we can finally do away with PST's sometime next year I hope.

RE: Desktop Backup

2008-05-02 Thread gsweers
Good reading on the benefits of SIS through an organization.
Differences between Storage Server 2003 R2 and running sys on a DPM 2007
server.

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserversystem/wss2003/productinformation/
wss2003r2-itpros-wp.mspx

Storage server using SIS links will grovel the various file shares and
move duplicate data to a single instance in an SIS Common Store and then
put pointer files at the various server locations. Storage server is
the only OS that will comb multiple servers and storage locations to do
this. Whereas my understanding is that you can have DPM with SIS
installed on a single server and as long as data is stored on that
server SIS will function, but it does not grovel the rest of the
possible data stores looking for duplicate files.

Hmm, I hadn't noticed - does DPM provide SIS?

Something like DPM that does SIS would dramatically reduce the space

I hope you have a boatload of server space.
At a bare minimum you are going to consume at least 1 TB. It could be
 upwards of 40 TB +.
 PLUS backup of that data.

I might be looking at a 3rd party service like S3.

 Hi,
My client would like to have a desktop/laptop backup solution. They
 have
about 1000 users. May I know for those who has done this before, what
 have
you recommended and for those who have done it, how did you do it?
 Thanks.

I highly recommend backuppc. For the last 3 years I have been using
it to back up over 1500 workstations (about 600 laptops). it is free
and just plain works.

RE: Desktop Backup

2008-05-01 Thread Vue, Za
Personally I think it is an overkill backing up everything. What is it that the
client want to accomplish? We are talking about 1000 machines with an average
of 3-5GB disk space requirement min. What about the employee who loaded 5 GB of
music files to his My Documents folder? Now you have illegal copy of music
files on your network. Does the client want to back those up? Too much
resources are required to accomplish a task that I think it is not necessary or
practical.

Workstations=Use one single ghost image for identical machines. Same for
laptops. If the client runs Vista then you don't even need that many images.
Perhaps one for workstations and one for laptops.

Enable Shadow Copy on file servers and redirect My Documents folder to the
network with GPO. Someone deleted a file it takes a few seconds to restore it
from yesterday. If a machine dies, reimage.
