FWIW the wax ink melts in Tucson during the summer if you leave anything
printed in your car, leaving you with a block of paper instead of something
useful. Also, the local copy-shops won't copy stuff printed with this as it
tends to deposit on the hot rollers in their document-feed copiers.

Have you looked at the Xerox (tektronix) Phaser ? I've got an 8500 at home,
and it's pretty flexible for paper types, and the phase change wax ink will
print on damn near anything. And with very good quality. I've got the DN,
it includes a duplexer and ethernet port (along with USB)

Anyone else using the Phaser with either good or bad experiences to report ?

OK,

Here's the monthly color printer question to this list

Looking for a reliable color printer that can print on card stock and do
legal size paper. Less than 200 pages per month. Color images need to come
out with good quality. Network-attached rather than PC-attached.

So far the HP 2600n seems to have good reviews out there. HP itself directed
us to the CP1510 which seems slightly better.

We would probably go with Brother because we've had good experience with a
monochrome MFC. However, they told us they can't support cardstock. Seems
hard to believe.

Would not repeat Lexmark -- we have a c720 that's a beast, takes forever,
and has cost us lots of money in replacement parts.

Thanks for any advice, guys.

 It certainly has nothing to do with the technology used in the printer;

Ah, but it surely does !!! ( I know, don't call you Shirley ) ... It
originally stood for Phase Change , the SOLID ink stick is vaporized to
sputter the paper (hence the phase change from solid to liquid)

assumed it came about just because it rhymed with laser

technology used in the printer; it doesn't use an actual phaser. (There
really is something called a phaser. Outside of Star Trek, I mean. They're
used in digital signal processing. Some of our test equipment have them.)

Xerox has started using Phaser for printers that don't use solid ink.
There's nothing technologically incorrect about that, since Phaser was
never anything more than a brand name in the first place.

laser = toner ionization and fusing

The original laser printers really did use lasers. Some newer ones use an
array of high-intensity LEDs; I dunno if those technically qualify as
lasers. But both types work on the same electrophotographic process that
old-school copiers (non-digital) used. The difference is, rather than
reflecting a light off an original, the printers directly imprint the image
on the photo drum by controlling the light from the laser or LED array.

They had laser Phasers long before Xerox bought them, I recall buying one

Usually a LED printer is listed as just that, if isn't a Laser printer.
Check out the link to the Xerox line of printers. Most are laser, some solid
ink and there is one listed as a LED printer. I don't know if LED is better
then laser though, I've seen some cheap LED printers in my time.

Re: color printer???

2008-04-16 Thread Micheal Espinola Jr
I like my phasers. I currently have a 6180 and a 7300. For the older
models (7300ish and earlier) its very impotrant to leave them on
(warm) all the time. Allowing them to cool will lead to require a
professional cleaning more often due to ink gunking.

But I've also been on the hate end of the spectrum with the older
phasers. Again, IMO, the key to a happy life is keeping them (older
phasers) on all the time.

I know someone said on here that the 6180 is a toner printer, and I
know it says that (toner) on all the documentation, but I dont beleive
that it is (based on output look and feel, its vibrant and waxy). And
even though it readily goes into its standby without me being able to
over-ride it, I've yet to have an issue with it. I beleive this is
because the new toner cartridge style and orientation has been
greatly improved upon in recent years, and doesnt seem to leak dry ink
at all (which was a big problem with older models, including the
7300).

YMMV

 Adam

Ahh you mention the CLP-500, I mentioned the CLP-300, very different toner
cartridges. A google for clp-300 immediately hits up a full set of
replacements for under $100 but it seems the CLP-500 uses much different
cartridges, almost looks like they may include a drum within the cartridge
as well, whereas the 300 carts are just pretty much round plastic
containers.

Referring to what, the Xerox nightmares or the cheap Samsungs?

Xerox Phaser 7700, in about 6 or 7 years, two hard drives dead at
about $1000 each, parts and labor, for a 2.5 4gb notebook hard disk
drive formatted something proprietary (tried attaching it to a PC to
see what they were all about, no dice).

Required four separate print cartridges that lasted about 24,000 pages
each, and a full set of four was close to $1000. I also believe the
printer was full of $h** due to the chip on the cartridges that tell
the printer to stop using them.

Samsung CLP-300, prints come out just about as nice, cost of entire
printer is about $230 and a full set of replacement toners is about
$100, uses one single print cartridge that is also about $100... Oh
yeah, and the toners are not chipped so you can refill them to your
hearts content with generic color toner.

 Screw Xerox. (IMHO)

I beleive this is
because the new toner cartridge style and orientation has been
greatly improved upon in recent years, and doesnt seem to leak dry ink
at all (which was a big problem with older models, including the
7300).

YMMV

I will admit repairs on a Xerox are expensive, however the maintenance
contract is not that bad. Well maybe compared to other printers it is a
little high, however compared to the cost of the actual repair it is not
too bad. Our users like the visual appeal of the Solid Ink Technology,
and the fact that the supplies and consumables are much more
environmentally friendly. Based on that after having the first one
repaired for a bad printhead and knowing that we did not have a cost
estimate up front. We could have replaced the printer for less than the
cost of the repair. The next time we purchased the 3-year warranty.
Now if there is a problem Xerox is on the hook, yes the cost was about
half the cost of the printer if memory serves me correctly. However
since we have already had Xerox out to replace a failed board in the
printer, due to inadequately cooling in the building, and knowing that
the repair would have cost more than the warranty. I call it good, we
are about to have it worked on again as there are some minor problems
that I want repaired before the warranty is up.

My Opinion is if you choose to get a Xerox printer by all means PURCHASE
the warranty. If you have problems you will want it.

Do keep in mind that Xerox printers cost an arm and a leg to have
repaired if they break (firsthand experience). Samsung has a cheap and
quiet color laser out there that is practically disposable and puts out
reasonably good prints, with very cheap consumables.

RE: color printer???

2008-04-15 Thread Terry Dickson
They actually do not use Wax they use a Resin, and if you use imitation
sticks it can and usually does kill your printer. That is how we had
our first repair. They will scratch you are totally correct on that,
but the visual appeal for reports that probably will only be looked at
once is what the users really love.

The crayon printers? Those do put out fantastic color prints, but do
scratch. I have always wondered if you could get away with putting
actual Crayola crayons into them, their sticks dont seem too far off
from them.

Terry Dickson wrote:
I will admit repairs on a Xerox are expensive, however the maintenance
contract is not that bad. Well maybe compared to other printers it is
a
little high, however compared to the cost of the actual repair it is
not
too bad. Our users like the visual appeal of the Solid Ink
Technology,
and the fact that the supplies and consumables are much more
environmentally friendly. Based on that after having the first one
repaired for a bad printhead and knowing that we did not have a cost
estimate up front. We could have replaced the printer for less than
the
cost of the repair.

My Opinion is if you choose to get a Xerox printer by all means
PURCHASE
the warranty. If you have problems you will want it.

Thanks all, it sounds like Xerox is a serious contender, though I'd want to
be sure to get the extended warranty and supplies sound a bit steep.

Will check out the HP options mentioned on the list as well, and maybe stop

I appreciate all the responses.

Referring to what, the Xerox nightmares or the cheap Samsungs?

Xerox Phaser 7700, in about 6 or 7 years, two hard drives dead at about
$1000 each, parts and labor, for a 2.5 4gb notebook hard disk drive
formatted something proprietary (tried attaching it to a PC to see what they
were all about, no dice).

Required four separate print cartridges that lasted about 24,000 pages each,
and a full set of four was close to $1000. I also believe the printer was
full of $h** due to the chip on the cartridges that tell the printer to stop
using them.

Samsung CLP-300, prints come out just about as nice, cost of entire printer
is about $230 and a full set of replacement toners is about $100, uses one
single print cartridge that is also about $100... Oh yeah, and the toners
are not chipped so you can refill them to your hearts content with generic
color toner.

Screw Xerox. (IMHO)

From what I have seen, different phaser models/generations run
different OSs. I've even seen some running NT4.

Like someone else said, if you have one of these - it *behooves* you
to have a service contract on it.

Otherwise, they are great/fast color printers that will give you much
better output than laser.

Also, like someone else said, I wouldn't recommend using 3rd-party
and/or refilled toner. You are begging for problems. Phasers can be
the biggest pain when they have tonor-related issues that require a
full service cleaning. The last thing you'd ever want to do is use
non-precisely designed/engineered parts in it.

Its my assumption that phaser-type printers are the least forgiving in
this respect.

No arguement there. But the materials and image/color quality are
very different than laser.

The OP asked for quality, and I would take a phaser above a laser. My
office needs to do marketing proofs, and there was no question
between chosing a phaser or a laser.

Since his output is minimal, consumables may not be much of a factor.

Not all Phasers are solid ink, ours were lasers. The Canon color copiers we

It has 4 separate POWDER toners carts, a charging wire, a photoreceptor drum
on which it applies toner 4 times and a fuser assembly to fuse the toner to
the paper. Sounds like a laser printer to me :-). The solid ink versions use
a stick of solid ink for the color, not cartridges. As long as I've known
they had both solid ink and laser printers sold under the Phaser name and do
still to this day except Xerox bought that part of Tektronix a good while
back. I also had a model 780 which was the same but could print ledger size.

From what I have seen, different phaser models/generations run
different OSs. I've even seen some running NT4.

Like someone else said, if you have one of these - it
 *behooves*

  you
to have a service contract on it.

Otherwise, they are great/fast color printers that will give
 you

  much
 better output than laser.

Also, like someone else said, I wouldn't recommend using
 3rd-party
and/or refilled toner. You are begging for problems. Phasers
 can

   be
the biggest pain when they have tonor-related issues that
 require

a
full service cleaning. The last thing you'd ever want to do is
use
 non-precisely designed/engineered parts in it.

Its my assumption that phaser-type printers are the least
forgivingin
 this respect.

Out Phaser 6180DN toner based printer disagrees. They are offered in both
flavors. Some here got bit with some high priced service, but that's any
company when you're dealing with EOL or out of contract hardware. I have a
Minolta MFP that is our boat anchor because of that. Maybe I just have a
good Xerox rep. He tells me what options are worth it and what aren't. I
would probably get any printer brand he deals with because of the service we
get.

Phaser is a brand name trademarked by Tektronix for their solid
ink printers. (Xerox bought the line from them.) I don't know, but
I've always assumed it came about just because it rhymed with laser
and reminded people of Star Trek. It certainly has nothing to do
with the technology used in the printer; it doesn't use an actual
phaser. (There really is something called a phaser. Outside of Star
Trek, I mean. They're used in digital signal processing. Some of our
test equipment have them.)

Xerox has started using Phaser for printers that don't use solid
ink. There's nothing technologically incorrect about that, since
Phaser was never anything more than a brand name in the first place.

laser = toner ionization and fusing

The original laser printers really did use lasers. Some newer ones
use an array of high-intensity LEDs; I dunno if those technically
qualify as lasers. But both types work on the same
electrophotographic process that old-school copiers (non-digital)
used. The difference is, rather than reflecting a light off an
original, the printers directly imprint the image on the photo drum by
controlling the light from the laser or LED array.

I tried the display model of one of those in Staples. Seems like a
neat little printer for personal use, but good gawd is it slow. It
takes it 20 seconds to get a page out.

We have an HP Color LaserJet 2500n and a CLJ 2600n. I'm not overly
impressed, but they seem to work okay.

The 2500 uses a single photo drum and puts the four CMYK toner
cartridges on a carousel. When you first turn it on or wake it up, it
has to through a calibration cycle to line everything up; that can
take a good two minutes. Once it's ready, BW prints come out
reasonably quickly. Color is four times slower, since it just has the
one photo drum. It's also slightly prone to misfeeding on heavy or
slippery print stock.

The 2600 has four individual cartridges, each with its own toner and
drum. Color printing is thus single pass, and there's no calibration
cycle. So it's a lot faster.

A colleague of mine was praising the CLJ 3600 as fast for both BW
and color, and delivering very good looking prints.

HP's tech support has become horrible. Don't expect them to honor
their warranties.

Adam

Check carefully, some of the Xerox printer have more stringent
requirements on card stock than other brands. However I have found if
you contact a Xerox rep directly they will many times bring you out a
printer to test for a period of time. That usually helps make the sell,
unless it just does not work.

There also Xerox color printers, formerly known as Tektronix. I love HP
printers but I have never used a color HP since all our color work is
done by our color copiers.

We have an HP 2605dn at home which my wife uses for her small business. The
prints are nothing short of spectacular but my wife says heavy card stock
(100# text) tends to get stuck. Looking at the paper path through the manual
feed, I can see why.

Take some samples of your cardstock to Staples/Officemax/Office Depot and run
some tests.
