[nysbirds-l] Eurasian Wigeon

2019-11-06 Thread Christopher Gangemi
Hey all,

There is an adult male Eurasian Wigeon at the north end of Long Pond, in Sayre
Park, Bridgehampton.

Weird spot adjacent to Marders garden center and along the train tracks. To get
to the pond you drive the dirt road all the way to the end. Exit your car and
then walk down the little slope to the pond.

The bird was fairly distant when I saw it at 12:30 on the North end of the pond.

[nysbirds-l] Eurasian Wigeon, Setauket (Suffolk)

2016-12-15 Thread Douglas Futuyma
About an hour ago (ca. 8:40), I found a male Eurasian Wigeon in Setauket
Harbor, in the narrow southeastern cove bordered by Shore Road and Van
Brunt Manor Road. This is likely a returning bird, seen at this site in
recent winters. I have just seen Andrew Baksh's forwarded report of Gary
Strauss's observation of this species at the Setauket Mill Pond. It is
surely the same bird. I checked the Mill Pond at 8:20, and found no wigeons
there. So I suggest checking both sites if you look for this bird.

[nysbirds-l] Eurasian Wigeon at Jamaica Bay

2019-10-20 Thread Steve Walter
A drake Eurasian Wigeon was among the first birds I saw as I arrived at the
south end of the East Pond this morning. The water is getting high again,
allowing ducks to come close. But they all quickly moved away with me there,
even before I could get to the edge of the pond. Shorebirds at the south end
stayed in sight and included about 45 Greater Yellowlegs, 8 Lesser
Yellowlegs, and 5 Long-billed Dowitchers. The dowitchers could conceivably
stay for the winter, if they don't get flooded out of one of the too few
suitable habitats around here. I mentioned this to a ranger, and he said he
would pass along the idea of continuing to manage it beyond the usual
seasonal time frame. We'll see.

Also at Jamaica Bay today were a Ferruginous Hawk, Steppe Eagle, and Eagle
Owl. For real. Raptorama.

[nysbirds-l] Eurasian Wigeon in Oyster Bay

2010-11-19 Thread Jason Pietrzak
I found a male Eurasian Wigeon on the Mill Pond in Oyster Bay at noon today.
Looks like these are blowing in all over the place.

I put two photos up on my blog:

http://www.weekdaybirding.com/2010/11/oyster-bay-eurasian-wigeon/

I am judging this bird to be a first-winter male based on the main body
plumage, so that's at least different from the other reports I've seen this
winter. The bird also has a strange gray collar around its neck, which
neither Sibley nor Collins show, but I don't know enough about the species
to say if that indicates anything strange.

Good birding!

[nysbirds-l] Eurasian Wigeon - Patchogue Lake Continues

2011-11-16 Thread mcb3mb
When I first arrived at Patchogue Lake to search for the Eurasian Wigeon
yesterday afternoon, I failed to locate it at the south end of the lake.
Overall, the waterfowl numbers appeared relatively low at the south end. I
continued up to the north end of the lake where the drake Eurasian Wigeon was
quickly located among a large flock of wigeon and other waterfowl just south of
Roe Blvd.
Good Birding,

[nysbirds-l] Eurasian Wigeon- Mamaroneck, Westchester County

2014-12-05 Thread Jack Rothman
A photographer friend just sent me a photo of both a male and female Eurasian
Wigeon he photographed this morning. It is with a group of ten or so American
Wigeon.
Hopefully it will remain until the rain stops.

Here are his directions if anyone wants to find it. The bird is located in
Mamaroneck, Westchester County.

>From the South: Come up the Post Road and, at Weaver Street, turn right into
>the Hommocks School. Go left around the school and when you see the golf
>course take the right hand fork along the sports fields. There is a small
>parking lot (for half a dozen cars) after 100 yards on the right and the
>trails start there. There is a catwalk with a large viewing deck and the
>Wigeons are usually over on the left but they frequently come out into the
>middle of the bay.

[nysbirds-l] Eurasian Wigeon, others - Iroquois NWR

2015-04-25 Thread Willie D'Anna and Betsy Potter
Betsy and I hit a couple of spots in the swamps today. When returning to our
car from Kumph Marsh, we ran into Glenn Adams and Pat Martin. Glenn had seen
a bird that he was unsure about but he had a photo, so he showed it to me.
It was a EURASIAN WIGEON, which he had seen from the Kanyoo Trail. Glenn
kindly offered to take us back there to try and see it, which we did.
Although photography was difficult as the bird was at the very far side of
the marsh now and often obscured by cattails (being short and having an
angled eyepiece can be a disadvantage when digiscoping), I studied the bird
carefully for any signs of American Wigeon genes. It looked like a pure
Eurasian to me. Thanks, Glenn! Pat Martin managed to see the wigeon in the
same location but from the Feeder Road by Kumph Marsh.

At Kumph Marsh there were two SANDHILL CRANES and out first YELLOW WARBLER
of the year was singing nearby. At home this morning were two PINE SISKINS
and a COMMON REDPOLL, the first of the latter we have seen since April 14th.
I watched the lake from the end of Rt 425 in the Village of Wilson this
morning. There was a good flight of both loons and BONAPARTE'S GULLS, 40
RED-NECKED GREBES, and a drake SURF SCOTER. My complete checklist from the
watch is here: http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S23044358

Good birding!

[nysbirds-l] Eurasian Wigeon, Setauket Harbor (Suffolk)

2016-01-05 Thread Douglas Futuyma
An hour ago, I saw a male Eurasian Wigeon in the narrow cove at the
southeast corner of Setauket Harbor. This is along Shore Road, which runs
north from Route 25A in Setauket.

This is almost surely the same bird that has been sporadically frequenting
the Setauket mill pond, which is now partly frozen over and has a much
reduced number of waterfowl. The cove has been a favored site for a male
Eurasian Wigeon for several years, possibly a single returning bird.

[nysbirds-l] Eurasian Wigeon continues at Rockland Lake

2010-10-26 Thread B Inskeep
Greetings to all,

Tom Fiore and I visited Rockland Lake, Rockland County 10/22 - 10/24 and
observed the Eurasian Wigeon on Saturday 10/23. It was in a small pond across
from the lake near the north parking lot, providing relatively close views.
Coordinates were mentioned in a previous report by Alan Wells; the pond is also
included on google maps of the area. The wigeon was absent during a visit late
Sunday afternoon after we concluded the hawkwatch on Hook Mountain, but had
returned to the pond again as observed Monday morning, 10/25. Other birds
noted on the lake and in the pond were Pied-billed Grebe, many Wood Ducks and
Gadwall, Northern Pintail (one female), American Wigeon, Northern Shoveler,
Bufflehead, American Coot (many).

[nysbirds-l] Eurasian Wigeon - Lotus Lake, Sayville (Suffolk)

2012-10-13 Thread Derek Rogers
There is currently an adult male Eurasian Wigeon on Lotus Lake in Sayville. The
bird is transitioning out of eclipse plumage and into breeding. Bright rufous
head, patchy rufous on sides blending into a pale grey wash. Considerable grey
above. Some decent iScope images are available below on my Flickr link.

Other than the wigeon, there were mostly the usual migrants that we'd expect. 2
Green-winged Teals were the other new arrivals for Lotus.

Best access for Lotus Lake is toward the dead end of Lotus Road on the east
side of the lake. Walk in toward the dam and you'll find a nice, open area to
glass over the pond.

Best,

[nysbirds-l] Eurasian Wigeon and other Year Birds

2013-04-06 Thread Willie D'Anna and Betsy Potter
Betsy, Celeste Morien, and I had some nice birds today, including several
first-of-the-year birds. Among the latter were a COMMON TERN flying along
the shore of Lake Ontario from our yard, two CASPIAN TERNS at Wilson harbor,
two EASTERN PHOEBES, one BARN SWALLOW, and one EURASIAN WIGEON. We were
told about the Wigeon at Cinnamon Marsh, Tonawanda WMA by Sal Salembier, who
found it this afternoon (access from Meadville Road). After seeing the
wigeon, we checked out the 300+ TREE SWALLOWS on a wire there and found one
BARN SWALLOW. There was an abundance of several species of ducks at
Cinnamon Marsh, all looking beautiful in the late afternoon light -
GREEN-WINGED TEAL, PINTAIL, AMERICAN WIGEON, RING-NECKED DUCK, HOODED
MERGANSER, WOOD DUCK, BUFFLEHEAD, REDHEAD, SHOVELER, MALLARD.

73 RED-NECKED GREBES and 28 HORNED GREBES were off of Shadigee, which is at
the northern extension to Lake Ontario of Rt 63. Two BLACK SCOTERS were out
from our yard and two SURF SCOTERS were at Olcott Beach. Lots of
WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS on the lake right now.

Good birding!

Re: [nysbirds-l] Eurasian Wigeon -- Grant Park (Hewlett)

2014-11-09 Thread Ben Cacace
An eBird.org hotspot (shared location) has been created for 'Grant Park,
Hewlett' and should be available within 12 hours on the system. All
checklists associated with a hotspot will be available to view via bar
charts on eBird.org. All personal locations will be visible only at the
county level and above.

If you wish to merge your personal location with the existing hotspot here
are the steps.:

— Sign into eBird.org
— Go to "My eBird" & select "Manage My Locations" in the right panel
— Select your personal location (it will show a letter "P" under Type*) &
click "Edit"
— Select the "Merge" button and you'll see all nearby hotspots as red icons
— Keep the checkmark selected for "Delete after merging"
— Click the icon that best fits your location
— ... then you'll see the hotspot description above the 'Merge' button
along with the # of checklists you'll be merging your checklists to
— Click on the 'Merge' button
— Answer Yes to the 'Yes or No' query

All checklists for that personal location will be combined with the hotspot
with this process.

[nysbirds-l] Eurasian Wigeon, Blydenburgh Co. Pk. (Suffolk County)

2012-12-04 Thread Peter Scully
There was an eclipse-plumaged drake EURASIAN WIGEON on Stump Pond at
Blydenburgh County Park in Smithtown this afternoon. Apparently a good year for
this species.

Four RUSTY BLACKBIRDS were also foraging along the shoreline.

[nysbirds-l] Eurasian Wigeon - Saint John's Pond (Suffolk Co.)

2013-12-10 Thread Derek Rogers
There is a drake Eurasian Wigeon among the growing numbers of American Wigeon
on St. John's Pond in Cold Spring Harbor. Species diversity has also increased
here in the past week.

All of the ducks were located toward the south end of the pond and a scope may
be necessary to pick out the Eurasian Wigeon, which has not yet obtained its
full breeding plumage.

The molting male Eurasian Wigeon found by Derek Rogers continues at St.
John's Pond in Cold Spring Harbor. Also present on the pond were three
Redheads; hopefully both species stick around for the Northern Nassau CBC
on Saturday.

Also worth mentioning in the area were 44 Canvasbacks on the Centerport

To add to this seasons Eurasian Wigeon count, I observed a handsome drake near
the south end of Mill Pond in Centerport around noon today. The bird was
feeding with 6 American Wigeon and 10 Gadwall before it decided to leave the

[nysbirds-l] Eurasian Wigeon & Eared Grebe today at Jamaica Bay

2012-01-14 Thread Sam Stuart
All,

Today i visited Jamaica Bay with Rhys Marsh. Despite the chilly wind, we
found the Eared Grebe from the end of 10th St in Broad Channel (south of
park visitor's center). It was diving frequently and easy to miss in the
waves.

We had no luck looking for a Barrow's from the West Pond trail. The only
Goldeneyes we found were two female Commons in the bay.

The Eurasian Wigeon was at the southern end of the East Pond. Here's a
digi-scoped picture of the drake:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/pasurfbird/6696942377/ It was in the company
of two Canvasbacks and a few American Wigeon best viewed from the trail
that follows the southern perimeter of the East Pond.

[nysbirds-l] Eurasian Wigeon, Lapland Longspur + Nassau County (Late Report)

2013-01-08 Thread Shawn Billerman
Hi all,

Sorry for the late post, but this past weekend, Mary Beth Billerman, Ernie
Lewis and I went birding around some spots in southern Nassau County. On
Sunday, we found the continuing two male EURASIAN WIGEONS at the Massapequa
Preserve (in the creek along the edge of the pond best accessed from the
east side of the Preserve, near Harding Street). The birds have been at
this pond the past few times I have seen them at the Preserve. We were
unable to locate the hybrid wigeon that had been with them during previous
visits. Also present at the Massapequa Preserve are continuing good
numbers of Winter Wrens (at least 8 on a short walk through the woods), 3
Fox Sparrows, and other good winter birds.

At Jones Beach on Saturday, we encountered 3 COMMON REDPOLLS in the median
at West End near the turnaround, where there has been a lot of activity
lately. We also found a LAPLAND LONGSPUR in the swale at the West End 2
Parking Lot loosely associating with Snow Buntings and Horned Larks. We
were unable to locate Harlequin Ducks or Purple Sandpipers at Point
Lookout, but there were very good numbers of both Red-breasted Mergansers
and Long-tailed Ducks just off the beach, in much higher numbers than I've
seen at this location over the past 2 weeks.

Good birding,

[nysbirds-l] Eurasian Wigeon - Leeds Pond Preserve + (Nassau Co) 3/30

2016-03-30 Thread Brendan Fogarty
Hi everyone,
There was a drake Eurasian Wigeon hanging with the relatively few lingering
ducks on Leeds Pond in Plandome this afternoon. eBird evidence suggests it has
been there on and off for at least a week. Really unimpressive photos on the
checklist:
http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S28647484

Afterwards, walking around the perimeters of the closed Hempstead Plains
Preserve areas north and south of Charles Lindbergh Blvd turned up little of
note. A Ring-necked Pheasant called once from the south side of the boulevard.

[nysbirds-l] Eurasian Wigeon Continues on Santapogue Creek, West Babylon (Suffolk Co.)

2010-02-08 Thread Ken Feustel
After a few unsuccessful forays to Santapogue Creek in West Babylon to see the
Eurasian Wigeon discovered on the Captree CBC, I finally observed the bird this
morning on the east side of the mouth of the creek. The bird was in the
company of a few American Wigeon feeding along the edge of the broken concrete
that forms part of the southwestern border of the Bergen Pt. Sewage Treatment
Plant, as viewed from the west side of the creek at Venetian Shores Town Park.
The looks at the bird were mediocre, and a scope was necessary to locate the
bird.

[nysbirds-l] Eurasian Wigeon, Black-headed Gull, Eared Grebe in Queens/Brooklyn

2012-01-17 Thread Anthony Collerton
Spent a little time at Jamaica Bay this morning in the rain - both ponds
are now largely frozen but the duck seem to be hanging around. The
EURASIAN WIGEON was in a small hole in the ice on the East Pond at around
noon (I'd checked earlier and not seen it). Best viewed from the Big John's
Pond entrance. On the West side, the EARED GREBE remains in the same area
(close to Broad Channel) and an immature Black-crowned Night Heron and a
Peregrine were around the West Pond. No sign of the Barrows - there were
about 8 distant goldeneye but all the drakes were Common.

On the way back to Manhattan I made a stop at the Owl's Head treatment
plant where the BLACK-HEADED GULL was easily viewed from the fishing pier.

[nysbirds-l] Eurasian Wigeon - St. John's Pond, Cold Spring Harbor (Suffolk/Nassau)

2012-12-03 Thread Derek Rogers
As of about 2:00 PM, there was a drake Eurasian Wigeon along the southeast
edge of St. John's Pond in Cold Spring Harbor. The bird recalled the
Eurasian Wigeon that I found earlier this season on Lotus Lake in Sayville,
showing patches of pale gray wash filling in along the birds flanks and
sides. The buffy forehead was also beginning to fill in.

Best viewing for the pond is behind the Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery
and up the wooden staircase. The Nassau/Suffolk border actually runs
directly through the middle of the pond which is why both counties are
referenced in the subject heading of this post.

While on the Eurasian Wigeon topic, Hard's Lake, at Southaven County Park,
held a single drake last week. A Greater White-fronted Goose was also on
the lake, toward the north end as well as a Lesser Black-backed Gull. This
is a good spot to check for birds given its location along the Carman's
River corridor. Goose and gull numbers are usually solid at this location.
