The Pink-footed Goose remained in the small grassy area behind the Provident Bank until approx. 5:10 PM when it and the 11 Canada Geese it was with, headed East presumably to spend the night on the Wallkill River. Re: [nysbirds-l] Pink-footed Goose yes, Red-headed Woodpecker yes
The header on Andrew Block's posting has me bamboozled for a second. How did I not know about this bird? In my book, 'Yes'/'no' qualifiers usually indicate the status of previously reported birds. Then I realize that the PINK-FOOTED GOOSE is across the border in New Jersey, not NYS and that his message being cross posted. Thus some background maybe helpful for those not watching the NJ lists. Obviously this is exciting news for our friends to the south. From what I can tell, the goose was found on Monday (7 Mar 2011) by a Bergen County birder. The land is private and there are access issues but quite a number of people have seen the goose on Tuesday and today. This location is only a few miles south of Rockland County, and significantly, it is also not too far from the prime goose habitat of Orange County... [nysbirds-l] Pink-footed Goose - Friday, Dec. 4
Hi all, I received an email this morning from Chris Feeney who was birding New Jersey and Long Island this past week. He wanted me to post that he found the PINK-FOOTED GOOSE at Sunken Meadow State Park on Friday, December 4. Chris saw the bird about 2:30 pm in the field to the left of the main admin building. Good luck to all those who try for the bird. Hopefully it will stick around for the Christmas counts. [nysbirds-l] Pink-footed Goose - Yes
Hi all, My mom and I were able to relocate the PINK-FOOTED GOOSE this afternoon between 2 and 3 this afternoon at the Kings Park High School, where it was with roughly 200 Canada Geese. We were unable to locate either the Cackling or Barnacle Goose in this flock, and although we did not check Sunken Meadow State Park, we were told by another birder that neither goose was there either. It was interesting to note that the Pink-footed Goose was vocalizing a lot this afternoon. Has anyone else noticed this? [nysbirds-l] Pink-footed Goose - NO; South Shore Birding
This evening from 3:20 to dusk Samantha Holschbach and I searched without success for the Pink-footed Goose at Sunken Meadow State Park. We found a flock of 65 Canadas on the edge of a closed parking lot; that was it for goose activity. It seems we've missed this bird by one day. No Accipiters seen either. Earlier we birded the south shore of Long Island from Point Lookout to Robert Moses State Park. No unusual species, but plenty of opportunities to study all three scoters, Common Eiders, Common & Red-throated Loons, Long-tailed Ducks, Red-breasted Mergansers, Northern Gannets, Ruddy Turnstones, Dunlin, American Oystercatchers, and Black-bellied Plovers. [nysbirds-l] Pink-footed Goose Continues at Sunken Meadow State Park
The Pink-footed Goose returned to Sunken Meadow State Park, along with a hundred or so Canada Geese sometime between 3:00 and 4:00 PM today, Sunday, November 22. It was in the west field near the beach. I'm not sure where it was the rest of the day. It wasn't at the high school, the middle school, or anywhere else I or anybody I talked to looked. If anyone saw the Barnacle Goose, I didn't hear about it. While waiting for the Pink-footed Goose to reappear, Long Island Sound produced multiple Common and Red-throated Loons, A dozen or so White-winged Scoters, 2 Long-tailed Ducks, a couple of cormorants, and the usual gulls. There was also one late Semipalmated Plover on the beach. -- Elliotte Rusty Harold elh...@ibiblio.org -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES Archives: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

[nysbirds-l] Pink-footed Goose Still at SMSP (Suffolk County)
At 10:15AM Sue and I observed the previously reported Pink-footed Goose at Sunken Meadow State Park on the athletic fields on the East side of the main entrance road (after the toll booths and before crossing the bridge over Sunken Meadow Creek). The bird was in company with approx. 180 Canada Geese. Additionally, Rich Kelly found a Cackling Goose in with the Canada's. [nysbirds-l] Pink-footed Goose -- thoughts on finding
Hi All, Tom Johnson, Carolyn Sedgwick, Jessie Barry and I spent the better part of the day enjoying the Canada Geese, gulls, flyover passerines and traffic at Sunken Meadow State Park. Despite spending much of the day there, we did not see the geese until 3:02PM. Tom Johnson first saw the Pink-footed in flight with ca. 200 Canada Geese and the Barnacle Goose at 3:02PM. We were waiting specifically for the bird since Tate saw the bird come in around 3:10 the day before. It quickly landed in the marsh out of view (just as Tate reported previously). We headed to the intersection that is just north of the bridge over the creek, walked about 100 meters west, entered the woods and walked to the edge of the reeds. We were able to find an area where we were eventually able to get very good views, distant photographs and some surprisingly adequate video (See http://flickr.com/pinicola). We only briefly saw the Barnacle Goose from here. I suspect that others will have the best luck if they either arrive very early in the morning and look for the birds as they depart, orarrive around 2:30PM and wait for the birds to fly into the marsh. Birds often develop a routine and based on Tate's report and our experience that you will have the best luck around 3:00. The best area to wait may be just up the hill (south) from the bridge. We did spent time driving around many golf courses, baseball diamonds and parks but didn't run into the geese. I suspect with a bit more effort, others will find where these birds are feeding when they aren't at Sunken Meadows. [nysbirds-l] Pink-footed Goose at Sunken Meadow SP 11/7
As Christine Guarino kindly posted earlier for us when we were out in the field, Jodi Brodsky and I were lucky enough to refind the previously reported Pink-footed Goose this afternoon (11/7) at Sunken Meadow State Park. We were leaving the park headed south on the Sunken Meadow Parkway (having found neither the Pinkfoot nor the Barnacle Goose), when, only about a hundred yards after crossing Sunken Meadow Creek, Jodi noticed a flock of about 30 geese headed north almost straight toward us. We immediately pulled over, jumped out of the car, and, as the flock of Canadas went right over us (they were quite low), had a nice look at the Pink-footed ensconced in it. This was at about 3:05 PM. The birds definitely landed somewhere in Sunken Meadow Creek west of the bridge. We tried to find the bird again by scoping from the bridge, but it was not visible among the 50 or so Canadas that could be seen in the creek there. There were definitely more geese in the creek than we could see; at one point, about 10 Canadas flew up from the the area of Phragmites "islands" in the creek that can be seen from this bridge to the northwest (they flew up from just in back of the Osprey platform visible from the bridge). Sorry for the novella; just wanted to give as much information as possible about location and times for future searchers. Near as we could tell, the flock was headed almost due north when we saw them; maybe that'll help someone figure out where the the bird's spending its day. A few additional highlights of our day on Long Is. included one American Golden Plover still with a huge flock of Dunlins, Black-bellied Plovers, and a few Red Knots on the beach just west of Field 6 at Jones Beach, and 2 drake Harlequin Ducks at Jones Inlet (Pt. Lookout). [nysbirds-l] Pink-footed Goose at Sunken Meadow - thoughts on relationship to other NY sightings
Paul Gildersleeve kindly sent me some pictures of the Sunken Meadow goose taken yesterday and by comparing the shape and patterning of the bill, I think we can safely say that this is a DIFFERENT individual from the goose that spent a few days in Flushing, Queens last winter. The Flushing bird had a more elongated bill with a distinctive edging to the pink area. To form your own opinion, take a look at the quick composite I posted on my 'Birding to the End' blog. http://birdingtotheend.blogspot.com/ As mentioned earlier by Shai, Sunken Meadow SP isn't too far from Stony Brook and is even closer to the Nissequogue River where a Pink-footed Goose spent part of the 2007-2008 winter. From the distant images I have at hand right now, I can't say that these aren't the same individual. The Montauk bird (winter 2007/08) was present at the same time as the Stony Brook bird but I think has more extensive area of pink on the bill. Again I have better images of that bird somewhere for a more definitive comparison. Obviously, there isn't too much variation and many birds have very similar bills but some will be different enough that they can be ruled out or provide a firm match. -- Angus Wilson New York City & The Springs, NY, USA http://birdingtotheend.blogspot.com/ -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES Archives: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[nysbirds-l] Pink-footed Goose Suffolk County Long Island
Hi Angus, I will be leaving directly for the Pink Footed Goose which I just saw in Maine as a Lifer this past week. Please call 716-548-0798 if there are any updates as I will be on the road. Are the Western Kingbirds still around? Thanks, Jerry Lazarczyk Grand Island NY Exciting news! For what it's worth, the 3 Pink-feet in Cumberland, Maine were still present this morning, so this clearly a different (fourth) bird. Good photos of the bill might help us to determine if this is a returning bird or not. Also, I encourage folks to post updates on the bird, positive or negative, if able to visit the area in the next few days. > Ken Feustel just called with news of a Pink-footed Goose at Sunken Meadow SP, > on the north shore of western Suffolk County, Long Island. [nysbirds-l] Pink-footed Goose/Barnacle Goose at Sunken Meadow State Park (Suffolk Co.)
At about 11:30AM Sue and I found a Pink-footed Goose at the Sunken Meadow State Park (SMSP) athletic fields. After making the requisite phone calls Shai Mitra and Pat Lindsay arrived and in addition to the Pink-footed Goose, found a Barnacle Goose in the flock of approx. 125 Canada Geese. SMSP is located at the northern terminus of the Sunken Meadow Parkway. Upon entering the park go through the toll booths and, driving downhill, proceed over the bridge that spans Sunken Meadow Creek. Make your first right after crossing the bridge. The ballfields are located on the north side of the road between two parking fields. At this point you can either proceed to the eastern-most parking field and walk west to see the geese or, skipping the first right hand turn after the bridge, make the second right into the main parking field, parking at the eastern end of the lot, and walk east (you can also just pull off the road when you see the geese but I am not sure the State Park Police would appreciate that). If the geese are spooked they may fly into Sunken Meadow Creek so check the creek if you do not see the birds. The fields where the geese are feeding is the starting point for the numerous high school cross-country races that are run at SMSP this time of year. Try to arrive at the park before 2:00PM. Good luck if you go!
