I'd call it "Replacement of copyleft modules": the effort was in 
replacing stuff, just removing would have been trivial.


I'd actually prefer to avoid the "copyleft" word since it may be hard to 
understand and potentially confusing, but I can't come up with a concise 
phrasing for "Replacement of components with incompatible licenses".

Herbert is right - the used calling convention when calling ODBC methods is 
wrong.

Unfortunately, I myself introduced this issue by the patch to update the 
unixODBC header files in early Oct. last year due to licensing issues.


Fix will be commited soon - kudos goes to hdu.

it seems you did an intensive testing. But I can't reproduce the  
problems testing against a server running on Ubuntu and MacOS with  
clients based on OOo3.3 or AOO3.4 r1296433 on Windows 7 and MacOS.


How do you run this on Mac openoffice? I cannot type into the open  
dialog on Mac 10.6, but can only select the local folders or the  
mounted folders.



To open URL directly with the Mac OS X version, you need to use the  
OpenOffice.org Open dialog box (not the Apple native one).


To achieve that, you'll have to open the preferences ( Apple + " , "  
key) or Tools ->Options. Once done, in OpenOffice.org -> General ->  
check the OpenOffice.org dialog box.


Then quit AOOo, and try to Open a file -> URL will be allowed (but  
you'll lose the native box).

with spaces or special characters in the name) edit and save the

Yes, me. Long time ago.  We even had a patch for that, but it was  
refused, because it could cause an issue with Calc. I don't remind  
the issue number in IssueZilla, so you'll have to search using  
"webdav" keyword os something similar.

A contributor becomes a committer after a period of contributions to
the project.  So how do you get started with contributions if you
cannot check in files?  You start by submitting patches.  This allows
other committers to review your changes and then check them in.

Gladly, though I may be repeating myself :)

1) Allow some for a small number of locale leads which initially are 
"given freely like candy" but allow for revisting that if lead turns out 
to be inactive or rogue. These leads administer the access levels of 
their fellow translators (if there are any). These need Project Admin 
(https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/INFRA/translate+pootle+service+auth+levels) 
access but I'm sure they'd be quite happy to have that restricted to AOO 
Pootle only. As I said before, I doubt a lot of translators will do much 
in the way of committing code.
2) Allow account creating as on other Pootle servers without any hoops 
to jump through other than the usual signup process.


In essence, handle Pootle and l10n as it was handled before.

3) Once that basic sort of l10n infrastructure is in place, find some 
people skilled in code who are willing to keep a closeish look on l10n 
issues and decamp l10n from the main dev mailing list.

Well, things are rather distro-specific.
I would suggest not to update, but to remove first OOo and then install
AOO. On the other hand, it is rather likely that some package conflicts
with libreoffice, so installing AOO will need some manual tweaking.

On Fedora, for example, there was the issue with the URE package
http://openoffice.org/projects/www/lists/users/archive/2010-11/message/581

Now AOO URE package is obsoleted by libreoffice's package:


Examining openoffice.org-ure-3.4.0-9587.x86_64.rpm:
openoffice.org-ure-3.4.0-9587.x86_64
Cannot install package openoffice.org-ure-3.4.0-9587.x86_64. It is

So you have to edit yum.conf

Bandwidth is still problematic in a large portion of the world so I would 
think that there is still a call for it.  It does require a little work 
however.  Alex used to build the iso and installer for the DVD that came with 
installs for every platform as well as all the langpacks.  Many Community 
distributors focussed on a single language with win32 only installs mixed with 
other FOSS.  In India the government plays a large role in distributing CDs in 
specific local languages (5 million for the Tamil distribution if memory 
serves.  Two Indian MarCons were present at that launch they may have more 
accurate numbers)  

The Community distributor programme was simply a way to get people to sign off 
on a few non-challenging rules, in return we would list them on the Marketing 
project site and they were able to use artwork provided by the Art project for 
the CDs and Covers. 

A lot of unsophisticated web users are still wary of downloading anything off 
the internet.  They have been told by all the NetSafe types that all downloads 
are full of trojans, viruses, worms and various virulent indecypherable 
acronyms.  Hence the valuable service that the EBay sellers and local bricks 
and Mortar Community Distributors perform.  

Good distribution is about maintaining as many channels as is possible.  
Online download is only one.  Hard copy EBay is another.

It was my opinion that we never went far enough.  I wanted to have listed on 
the marketing site a reasonable recommended retail price.  $5 on ebay is 
ridiculous when the Seller's time and effort is taken into account.  I have 
talked to groups of High Street retailers who installed OOo on Computers for 
free and proved to them that they should in fact be charging around $60 per 
install when you take into account:  Download, install, first level support 
and media.  

First response was: "Yea that's a bit unfair though because only 1 in 20 will 
come back asking for support."
To which I answer: "Yes, but that one person will likely consume most of the 
support allowance for rest of the twenty."
Sometimes the response has been: "Yea but we'd rather do without those ones."
To which I respond: "The ones that keep coming back are the ones that pay your 
rent and wage bill and from my point of view I want that loud noisy pushy 
customer to loudly tell the world 'I got OpenOffice on my computer and the 
support I got was brilliant and it only cost me $60 and they tell me I get 
free upgrades for life!'  best advertising going."

We have two large difficulties in the market, one: We don't get to people's 
consciousness early enough, this is why the OOo4Kids project is so important 
and why we need distribution channels into schools.
 and two we don't have the community support networks that the opposition does 
(by this I mean the guy next door, the cousin the niece, the son, the guy down 
at the local computer shop) distribution channels enhance this community 
support network.

As an extension for this I had a pipe dream, not sure how feasible it would 
be, but I think it would be brilliant if it were possible, like SUSE Studio, 
to be able to build a customised instance of AOO online.  Upload templates to 
the install, select languages, extensions, font sets, customise look and feel 
defaults such as icon sets, upload ones own graphical elements such as 
splashscreens and then build it for whatever platform you choose.  A bit like 
the distros do now but instead it would be for the users or distributors to be 
able to "roll their own".  

A possibility, who knows but it would strengthen the community networks.

this might be the target openofficewithjre in
trunk/main/instsetoo_native/util/makefile.mk

You can try building it after a build --all in
trunk/main/instsetoo_native:

cd trunk/main/instsetoo_native/util/
dmake openofficewithjre


That said, note that this is unmaintained, so it may not work (I bet it
does not build); AFAIK AOO cannot ship a JRE, so the code is not used 
anymore and not maintained.

PS: The only odd bit for me is the Copyleft blob.  Because it requires two 
lines of text, it seems to be some big splat rather than a duration.  If you 
just say "Removal of Copyleft" or "License Cleanups" it would fit better.  It 
might be even better if the words were a legend text like the rest with a 
left-half button at the start, a right-half button on the right.

Whatever you do, it is a great diagram.

This is all making localization of OO unnecessarily complicated. Looking 
at it another way - is there a way of separating the signup and rights 
management of Pootle on Apache from the rest of the rights management on 
Apache? All the necessary localization tools and processes are there 
within Pootle. The only problem we're facing is that the only signup and 
rights management path at the moment is via the standard Apache signup 
etc. We need to make the two separate.


I've done you some screenshots of what a locale admin account looks like 
in Pootle (http://www.akerbeltz.org/Process.doc)


The Overview (page 1) is, well, the overview, it shows you what projects 
a project admin has enabled for your locale cause not every locale does 
all projects. Gaelic for example isn't bothering with the Help files.


Page 2, Permissions, is where a locale adming adminsiters which other 
registered users (the dropdown on the left) they want to assign what 
rights to. Pootle is very efficient here. It allows for very flexible 
handling of user input, ranging from pure viewing and suggesting (for 
folk with questionable language skills for example) to committing and 
overwriting. Within Pootle I hasten to add, although I can commit 
translations to Pootle or overwrite files does not mean I automatically 
have the rights to overwrite LibreOffice code.


Page 3 is the Review screen which flags various issues such as missed 
placeholders etc. Also allows zip download of the po files (probably not 
to every users though, not sure, I've only ever had a locale leader 
account).


Page 4, Overview, is where I drill down to individual po files, either 
to then translate strings online OR to upload a po file I've edited offline.


There's more but I think those are the important bits for this 
discussion. The only thing we really need, the way I see it, is to keep 
the two rights management processes separate, then enable all the Pootle 
features and just go with what Pootle offers. At some point, someone 
picks up all the translations and ports them to wherever the black magic 
happens to create builds. Simples :)

ok, the topnav...that's fine. I changed the "button" link back to

OK, nslookup is now resolving this correctly.

And it looks like both updateexte.openoffice.org and
updateexte.services.openoffice.org are going to the new extensions site at
SourceForge as well.

I wish to talk about two points.

1) Really Pootle can be useful and we can win produtivity with it, BUT
is possible work with other tools too;

2) This instance of Pootle, without a minimum of one person per
language as committer, is unusable.

Explaining:

1) How we haven't a functional pootle instance, or by lack of admin or
by method/process, i am revising the translation in the "old way",
with the convertion of SDF to PO, using the old pt-BR SDF file as
translation memory (TM) and continuing the revision/translation. Is
possible to share this files between the team and, at final, join all
files and reconvert to SDF.

I used translate-toolkit, to convert, and lokalize (the localization
tool of KDE) for revision, automatic translation (reusing TM) and new
translations . Today, the situation is total of 72696 strings (UI +
help), 59263 translated (81,5%), 10385 fuzzy (14,3%) and 3048
untranslated (4,2%). With a good team, one week of work.

2) I agree with many people that explained the question of a "manager"
per language, because in this situation is impossible for one person
with skills in all languages. Same that one person could know many
languages, the details about the region, coloquial language or
habits/common expressions isn't in his domain.

In any way, we have more one problem: how recognize the contributions
and efforts of this volunteers? This volunteer profile isn't technical
(maybe a language manager/leader), and he need to be the bridge
between the tecnical and localization parts of project.

And if need more someone to help in Pootle, i can help.
