Apache Openoffice logo linking always same?
I feel that link from web-page logo should always be to main www-page ie. to www.openoffice.org. By this we create some more unity in www jungle and temporary visitors of which ever page can quickly move to downloading the suite. Situation now: a) Main WWW-pages (also native language): No link - that mean http://www.openoffice.org/ and sub sites. b) http://incubator.apache.org/openofficeorg/ -site: link to this same home page. c...d) cwiki and wiki pages are similar to case b. As a small work around solution I add download link on cwikis home page: https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/OOOUSERS/Wiki+Home But I feel that link via logo to main page would be much better solution. I am ready my self use some hours for this case if there is no denial for idea. There is also possible do this in case a and not in other sites. For solving one of these issues we have to introduce a new warning box which means that we have to translate a new string for 3.4.1. Re: Crazy idea: Use Google to translate website
Hello! Why not? I have used Google tranlator as a word book. Translation to Finnish is not nice languge but words are mostly OK. So I find normally more easy to write whole sentence manually than try to fix proposals. In some other languges structure is more like in English and I suppose threre is more to win for example on documentation. In future computer translations are better than today. So it is a resource allocation issue too. Regards Risto Raphael Bircher [rbirc...@apache.org] kirjoitti: Hi Rob I don't think this is a good idea. The translation is always not good, and many Computer related topics are nearly unreadable. As we see, there is not a load interests in translating websites or documentation as part of the official project. I would like to see that we puche thrid party page for documentation usw. Remember Apache is about development, it's designed for development. I beleve good trid party website are much better than a Google translated website, or not maintained NL websites. Greetings Raphael Am 02.07.12 01:55, schrieb Rob Weir: We've probably all seen the Google Translate service at: https://translate.google.com/ And many of us have probably seen this integrated into websites, so a reader can select a translation language from a menu on the page. The machine-generated translations are variable. Sometimes they are incomprehensible. And sometimes the translations are pretty good. But they are never as good as an expert human translation. If you hover your mouse over a Google Translate translation, it offers an option, contribute a better translation. That, combined with the ability to easily switch back to the original page, allows Google to refine their translations. So you can fix errors in the machine translation. Until now this has all been out of the website owner's control. According to this blog post [1] Google is now enabling the suggested translations to go back to the website owner for review and approval. They've also added site-specific glossary support as well as the ability to support multiple translation editors per account (in addition to the unbounded number of readers who can suggest translations). So this is getting interesting. Is this worth enabling for either the podling website or the www.openoffice.org website? Note that this does mean we stop doing NL pages. But this does allow us to quickly expand the scope of our translations, both in supported languages as well as translated pages. It also lowers the barrier to entry for contributors who want to improve the machine generated translations. [1] http://googletranslate.blogspot.com/2012/05/now-you-can-polish-up-googles.html

Re: [Calc][DISCUSS] What is your expected behavior when doing paste with a whole column or a whole sheet.
Hello! I have read response of Clarence GUO too and mostly agreed. Solution 1 is better for macro scripts too, I guess. If user really want to fill whole column it will be still possible leaving last row out and hanling it specially. Greetings Risto Lei Wang [lei.wang.l...@gmail.com] kirjoitti: Hi, When I review bug i118863 ( https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=118863), I find there are some other related user cases which can get AOO crash or freeze. Scenario 1 1)New a calc doc. 2)Input 1, 2, 3 in cell A1, A2, A3 3)Set background color for cell A1, A2, A3 as blue, green, red 4)Select A1:A3, and copy 5)Select a whole columnm, such as column E, and paste AOO need more than 5 minutes to complete this work. 6)undo the paste AOO also need a lot of time Scenario 2 1)New a calc doc. 2)Input 1, 2, 3 in cell A1, A2, A3 3)Select A1:A3, and copy 4)Select another whole sheet, such as sheet2, and paste AOO will crash Now Calc supoorts 1,048,576 rows * 1024 columns, which is 1,073,741,824 cells. Pasting with a whole column selected will fill the column. Pasting with a whole sheet selected will fill the sheet, which always casue AOO crash. I have two suggestions Solution 1 Disable auto repeat to fill cells when pasting with a whole column/sheet selected. Considering user may not want to repeat to fill the cells when pasting with a whole column/sheet selected, just paste the source data and do not repeat to fill. Excel has a strange behavior. It will not repeat to fill cells, if the cell numbers in target range is not integer multiple of the source data. For an example, Copy A1:A2, Select B1:B10, Ctrl+V - B1:B10 will be filled Copy A1:A2, Select B1:B11, Ctrl+V - Only B1:B2 will be filled So when pasting with a whole column/sheet selected, sometimes Excel will repeat to fill the whole column/sheet, sometimes it will not. Solution 2 Set two thresholds, one is for warning user, one is for the limitation. If number of cells in target range is bigger than warning threshold, Calc will popup a warning message to warn user the potential bad performance. If number of cells in target range is bigger than limitation, Calc will popup a error message to info user the operation can not be completed. The purpose of Solution 1/Solution 2 is to avoid making Calc crash for careless operation(paste with a whole column/sheet selected). What is your opinion?

Hello! I have nothing to add to answers of Regina Henschel but say hello to a fellow countryman. There are not too many Finns here. My mainly concern is translation of Apache OpenOffice to Finnish and it seems to be now second to none situation. So there is no urgent need of help. But all webpages must rebuilt etc. Hyvää pääsiäistä Happy Easter Risto Jääskeläinen Regina Henschel [rb.hensc...@t-online.de] kirjoitti: Hi Hannu, Hannu Puhakka schrieb: Hi OpenOffice developers I joined this list a day ago. You are welcome. I am not familiar with your groups and not sure if I am on the right list at all. Maybe someone can comment. This list is for developing Apache OpenOffice itself, for generating help content in form of websites and tutorials, for discussions about infrastructure, and building a community in general. See http://incubator.apache.org/openofficeorg/mailing-lists.html for an overview of the mailing lists. I am using oof OOO330m20 (Build: 9567). I have heard rumors that there are several OpenOffice projects - no idea what they might be and what to use - that my version is created by Oracle. Yes, one of them is this Apache OpenOffice, which is incubation and will become a full Apache project hopefully soon. Another project with the same code basis is LibreOffice. Common aim is to provide an office suite for the Open Document Format (ODF). Searching with this keywords you will find a lot of informations, from several point of view. I am running a small software company in Finland and used normally MsOffice for presentations, sheets and documents. Because of HW crash I now started to manage by OpenOffice. Then I have got some problems and ideas to improve OpenOffice. I suppose I myself do not have resources for programming OpenOffice. Programming is not the only way to contribute. Very important are translations and user support too. Where should I send my comments? You should start on a user maling list or forum. Often the problem is not, that a feature doesn't exist but that the way to use it is different from Microsoft Office. http://incubator.apache.org/openofficeorg/mailing-lists.html#users-mailing-list http://user.services.openoffice.org/en/forum/ Where is the database to check if my comments have already been handled? Enhancement requests are collected in Bugzilla although Bugzilla is mainly a tool for bug reports. https://issues.apache.org/ooo/ What version I should use to be useful with my comments? You should test the most actual version, currently found on https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/OOOUSERS/AOO+3.4+Unofficial+Developer+Snapshots But you should not use this version in productive content. How should I title my comments? As informative as possible. In mailing list tagging might be useful, on forum you have categories. Some of my comments: 1) bug: / Impress: I insert a new slide. I click a text element and change the text size from default 32 to 22 (rigth click on the frame and choose Character size 22). If I move the mouse on the first text row to start writing, but do not write even a letter and THEN I select the frame, font size will be changed again 32 although the character size shows 22. I have to change the size to maybe 15 and back to 22 to be able to continue. I'm not very familiar with Impress. But as a general rule, you have to distinguish between directly formatting an object or using styles, and you have to look carefully which object you are formatting. 2)improvement / Impress /Writer: Changing of picture size by mouse is very annoying. If you have inserted a picture from file into your presentation or document, you in 96 % of the cases need to modify the size - smaller or bigger. And 99% of those cases you expect that the picture should keep the original shape - it meens to Keep ratio!!! But now in Open Office when you resize the image, it never keeps the ratio - even if the Keep ratio checkbox is checked. I suppose this feature has been five years. If I do not work properly, still the feature should be changed because nobody cannot understand. See the attachments keep_ratio.jpg,resize.jpg. That is a very common misunderstanding of keep ratio. keep ratio is a checkbox that helps entering values in that dialog, so that you need not to calculate the width by yourself when you alter the height, but it is automatically calculated. It is not a property of the picture. To drag with keeping ratio hold down the Shift key while dragging. You see, this is a typical kind of suggestion you should discuss in a user mailing list or forum before entering it in Bugzilla. 3) bug: / Impress: Text area. Many times when I try to insert a new line on my list pressing Enter, the application do not add a new line, instead tries to continue writing the same line and the letters appear at the same character at the end of the line. I can fix it by selection another text area
