First thing first: it is quite well that there are some guides for installation
Apache OpenOffice to different linux distros.
But as command line is ancient way of communicate with computer and only few PC

uninstall AOO in linux too. Is there any other way than have it in repository

It may be my angularity with command line etc. but I notice difficulties when I
try to keep LibreOffice and AOO in same Linux Mint 13.

Thanks for these interesting comments Risto...

Really, just from items that pop up this list, IMO, it does seem to cause
more harm than good.

I think a little bit more research would be helpful, a real performance
test etc.

Saying that the whole suite becomes a bit lighter is of course not what
I have in mind here ;-)

We had a problem that is fixed and the quickstarter provides more
features that people like. And people who don't like can already disable it.

I see no reason at the moment to change here anything because the
problem is fixed.

If we have problems with a feature let us fix it and not drop the
feature completely ;-)

But that is only my personal opinion

Hello!
Supposing that quickstarter is working without any faults there is still
a time stealing hiding in it. Those users who use OpenOffice only once
and while lost a bit their working time every day they start their
computer and not use use OpenOffice at that session. It can happen even
twice a day. This happens to many if it is default because users seldom
change the settings.

So there must consider quickstarter per session, not only per starting
of OpenOffice. Also must take account different types of users. I
suppose quickstarter wastes time if it is count for all user totally.

Apache Openoffice logo linking always same?

2012-07-06 Thread Risto Jääskeläinen

I feel that link from web-page logo should always be to main www-page ie. to
www.openoffice.org. By this we create some more unity in www jungle and
temporary visitors of which ever page can quickly move to downloading the suite.

Situation now:

a) Main WWW-pages (also native language): No link
 - that mean http://www.openoffice.org/ and sub sites.

b) http://incubator.apache.org/openofficeorg/ -site: link to this same home
page.

c...d) cwiki and wiki pages are similar to case b.

As a small work around solution I add download link on cwikis home page:
https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/OOOUSERS/Wiki+Home
But I feel that link via logo to main page would be much better solution.

I am ready my self use some hours for this case if there is no denial for idea. There is also possible do this in case a and not in other sites.
For example on wiki pages

http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Main_Page
there are link to downloading in menu panel. So it is not priority # 1.

Opionions?

these issues and my plan is to have them all ready for a 3.4.1 that we
can decide at any time later if we want to move forward with the W8
support when we have everything in place in time.

For solving one of these issues we have to introduce a new warning box
which means that we have to translate a new string for 3.4.1.

I have updated the Pootle server already with the new string (17 words
only) and I would like to ask our translators to focus on this new
string as soon as possible (ideally this week).

Most important are the languages that we want release:

en-US ar cs de en-GB es fi fr gl hu it ja km nl ru sl pt-BR zh-CN zh-TW

and potentially sk where I have to update Pootle with the latest
available updates from Michal Hriň

The new string is in desktop - source - app.po

See for example for French

desktop.src#STR_BOOTSTRAP_ERR_MULTISESSION.string.text

https://translate.apache.org/fr/OOo_34/translate.html?unitstates=fuzzy,untranslated

de will be covered by myself ;-) because there is currently a problem
that I don't understand and that I have to solve.

To simplify the update I would prefer if the string get translated on
the Pootle server.

Please send me a short note when an updated or better a translation of
the string is available. I will take care of the integration.

If anybody have problems doing it on Pootle please let me know.

Re: Crazy idea: Use Google to translate website

2012-07-02 Thread Risto Jääskeläinen

Hello!

Why not?
I have used Google tranlator as a word book. Translation to Finnish is not
nice languge but words are mostly OK. So I find normally more easy to write
whole sentence manually than try to fix proposals. In some other languges
structure is more like in English and I suppose threre is more to win for
example on documentation.

In future computer translations are better than today. So it is a resource
allocation issue too.

page for documentation usw. Remember Apache is about development, it's
designed for development. I beleve good trid party website are much
better than a Google translated website, or not maintained NL websites.

Greetings Raphael

We've probably all seen the Google Translate service at:
 https://translate.google.com/

And many of us have probably seen this integrated into websites, so a
reader can select a translation language from a menu on the page.

The machine-generated translations are variable. Sometimes they are
incomprehensible. And sometimes the translations are pretty good.
But they are never as good as an expert human translation.

If you hover your mouse over a Google Translate translation, it offers
an option, contribute a better translation. That, combined with
the ability to easily switch back to the original page, allows Google
to refine their translations. So you can fix errors in the machine
translation. Until now this has all been out of the website owner's
 control.

According to this blog post [1] Google is now enabling the suggested
translations to go back to the website owner for review and approval.
They've also added site-specific glossary support as well as the
ability to support multiple translation editors per account (in
addition to the unbounded number of readers who can suggest
 translations).

 So this is getting interesting.

Is this worth enabling for either the podling website or the
 www.openoffice.org website?

Note that this does mean we stop doing NL pages. But this does allow
us to quickly expand the scope of our translations, both in supported
languages as well as translated pages. It also lowers the barrier to
entry for contributors who want to improve the machine generated
 translations.

Re: [Calc][DISCUSS] What is your expected behavior when doing paste with a whole column or a whole sheet.

2012-06-13 Thread Risto Jääskeläinen

Hello!

Hi,

When I review bug i118863 (
https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=118863), I find there are
some other related user cases which can get AOO crash or freeze.

Scenario 1
1)New a calc doc.
2)Input 1, 2, 3 in cell A1, A2, A3
3)Set background color for cell A1, A2, A3 as blue, green, red
4)Select A1:A3, and copy
5)Select a whole columnm, such as column E, and paste

AOO need more than 5 minutes to complete this work.
6)undo the paste
AOO also need a lot of time

Scenario 2
1)New a calc doc.
2)Input 1, 2, 3 in cell A1, A2, A3
3)Select A1:A3, and copy
4)Select another whole sheet, such as sheet2, and paste

AOO will crash

Now Calc supoorts 1,048,576 rows * 1024 columns, which is 1,073,741,824
cells. Pasting with a whole column selected will fill the column. Pasting
with a whole sheet selected will fill the sheet, which always casue AOO
crash.

I have two suggestions

Solution 1
Disable auto repeat to fill cells when pasting with a whole column/sheet
selected. Considering user may not want to repeat to fill the cells when
pasting with a whole column/sheet selected, just paste the source data and
do not repeat to fill.

Excel has a strange behavior. It will not repeat to fill cells, if the cell
numbers in target range is not integer multiple of the source data.
For an example,
Copy A1:A2, Select B1:B10, Ctrl+V - B1:B10 will be filled
Copy A1:A2, Select B1:B11, Ctrl+V - Only B1:B2 will be filled
So when pasting with a whole column/sheet selected, sometimes Excel will
repeat to fill the whole column/sheet, sometimes it will not.

Solution 2
Set two thresholds, one is for warning user, one is for the limitation.
If number of cells in target range is bigger than warning threshold, Calc
will popup a warning message to warn user the potential bad performance. If
number of cells in target range is bigger than limitation, Calc will popup
a error message to info user the operation can not be completed.

The purpose of Solution 1/Solution 2 is to avoid making Calc crash for
careless operation(paste with a whole column/sheet selected).

 What is your opinion?

So if Finnish is dropped out now and published with next minor version if
there is possible integrate newest translations then?  Bug is fixed in
Pootle but correct translation is not yet in publshed package.
I am sorry if this is not correct way of voting

Could you also try English version in your environment? This may not

 Hi all,

this is a call for vote on releasing the following candidate as Apache
OpenOffice 3.4 (incubating). This will be the first incubator release for
Apache OpenOffice and a key milestone to continue the success of
 OpenOffice.org.

This release candidate provides the following important key changes
 compared to former OpenOffice releases:
 (1) Code clean up to remove all copyleft components and external
 dependencies
 (2) Reworked or introduced LICENSE and NOTICE file to reflect and document
the used licenses of the code itself as well as of external 3rd party
 libraries
 (3) MD5, SHA1, SHA512 hashes and GPG signatures for all of artifacts

For a detailed feature overview please see the release notes under
 https://cwiki.apache.org/OOOUSERS/aoo-34-release-notes.html.

The release candidate artifacts (source release, as well as binary
releases for 16 languages) and further information how to verify and review

Hello
It seems that only first line of suggestions (if any?) is accepted. For example:
https://translate.apache.org/fi/OOo_34/translate.html?unit=5750345

is not accepted. And it is long and wrong string. Mainly correct Finnish
translations in UI are about same length and word count like source.
So there are about ten lines for each of places mentioned: STR_PRINTOPTUI,
SCSTR_PRINT_OPTIONS and RID_PRINTUIOPTIONS.

 Hi OpenOffice developers

You are welcome.

I am not familiar with your groups and not
sure if I am on the right list at all. Maybe someone can comment.

This list is for developing Apache OpenOffice itself, for generating
help content in form of websites and tutorials, for discussions about
infrastructure, and building a community in general.
See http://incubator.apache.org/openofficeorg/mailing-lists.html for an
overview of the mailing lists.

I am using oof OOO330m20 (Build: 9567). I have heard rumors that there
are several OpenOffice projects - no idea what they might be and what to
use - that my version is created by Oracle.

Yes, one of them is this Apache OpenOffice, which is incubation and will
become a full Apache project hopefully soon. Another project with the
same code basis is LibreOffice. Common aim is to provide an office suite
for the Open Document Format (ODF). Searching with this keywords you
will find a lot of informations, from several point of view.

I am running a small software company in Finland and used normally
MsOffice for presentations, sheets and documents. Because of HW crash I
now started to manage by OpenOffice. Then I have got some problems and
ideas to improve OpenOffice. I suppose I myself do not have resources
 for programming OpenOffice.

Programming is not the only way to contribute. Very important are
translations and user support too.

Where should I send my comments?

You should start on a user maling list or forum. Often the problem is
not, that a feature doesn't exist but that the way to use it is
different from Microsoft Office.

http://incubator.apache.org/openofficeorg/mailing-lists.html#users-mailing-list
http://user.services.openoffice.org/en/forum/

Where is the database to check if my comments have already been handled?

Enhancement requests are collected in Bugzilla although Bugzilla is
mainly a tool for bug reports.

https://issues.apache.org/ooo/

What version I should use to be useful with my comments?

You should test the most actual version, currently found on
https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/OOOUSERS/AOO+3.4+Unofficial+Developer+Snapshots
But you should not use this version in productive content.

How should I title my comments?

As informative as possible. In mailing list tagging might be useful, on
forum you have categories.

 Some of my comments:
 1) bug: / Impress: I insert a new slide. I click a text element and
change the text size from default 32 to 22 (rigth click on the frame and
choose Character size 22). If I move the mouse on the first text row to
start writing, but do not write even a letter and THEN I select the
frame, font size will be changed again 32 although the character size
shows 22. I have to change the size to maybe 15 and back to 22 to be
 able to continue.

I'm not very familiar with Impress. But as a general rule, you have to
distinguish between directly formatting an object or using styles, and
you have to look carefully which object you are formatting.

2)improvement / Impress /Writer: Changing of picture size by mouse is
very annoying. If you have inserted a picture from file into your
presentation or document, you in 96 % of the cases need to modify the
size - smaller or bigger. And 99% of those cases you expect that the
picture should keep the original shape - it meens to Keep ratio!!!
But now in Open Office when you resize the image, it never keeps the
ratio - even if the Keep ratio checkbox is checked. I suppose this
feature has been five years. If I do not work properly, still the
feature should be changed because nobody cannot understand. See the
 attachments keep_ratio.jpg,resize.jpg.

That is a very common misunderstanding of keep ratio. keep ratio is
a checkbox that helps entering values in that dialog, so that you need
not to calculate the width by yourself when you alter the height, but it
is automatically calculated. It is not a property of the picture.

To drag with keeping ratio hold down the Shift key while dragging.

You see, this is a typical kind of suggestion you should discuss in a
user mailing list or forum before entering it in Bugzilla.

 3) bug: / Impress: Text area. Many times when I try to insert a new
line on my list pressing Enter, the application do not add a new line,
instead tries to continue writing the same line and the letters appear
at the same character at the end of the line. I can fix it by selection
 another text area

Sorry, Risto. For this step, you need to do:

$ wget http://people.apache.org/~jsc/sdf/en-US.sdf
$
http://svn.apache.org/viewvc/incubator/ooo/trunk/extras/l10n/source/fi/localize.sdf?revision=1229431view=co
-o fi.SDF

Then you will have the template (en_US) more the old translation
(fi) in the same directory, so you can merge in an unique file.

$ cat en-US.sdf fi.sdf  fi.old.sdf

After, convert in PO files.

$ oo2po --source-language=en-US -l fi -i fi.old.sdf fi

This command will extract the msgid from en-US part and msgstring from
fi part. When one or other haven't its pair, return a error, jumping
the file. The new created dir called fi will be your TM.

So, get the POT files and run the automatic translation, if your
translate tool have this feature. At final, is revise what are marks
as fuzzy and fill what is empty.

Best,
Claudio

No I am enought confused. I just deleted whole directory. And start over.

If there is some general process which will create zip-files for all languages in near future OR Pootle is usable soon we save valuable time NOT creating just now .zip file for Finnish only (and then sending translations to the issue tracker etc).

I also linked this wiki page from our AOO 3.4 Release Plan cwiki page [2].

Does it makes sense to have such a wiki page?
If yes, please provide further data/information.

 Please provide further data/information.

Initially I put in the following data from my memory:
-- As far as I know the strings for the user interface for Portuguese
(Brazilian) are complete (currently not reflected on the Pootle server, but
in
the svn repository) - I do not the status for the help for Portuguese
 (Brazilian).
-- Zoltan stated in a post that the user interface strings for Hungarian are
also complete, but I do not know, if some of this work is lost due to the
fact
that the Pootle server was not up to date.
-- I have see work on Finnish - issue 119066. It looks like that not all
survived the Pootle server update. I have reopened the issue in order to
indicate that a review is needed. Thanks.

 Thanks in advance, Oliver.

 Hello!
I just check some new missing Finnish translation lines in Pootle (chart2 /
source / controller / dialogs.po) and it seems to me normal situation: those
missing translations are for new lines of version 3.4 and there is not yet
Finnish translations for them. And overall amount for new lines is quite
normal
for new version I think. So there are no need anything else than translation
work.

I am going to send my CLA to Apache. I think I can translate some lines as
 nobody or offline?

Thanks for the feedback.

I hope you did not look into the Pootle server projects Apache OpenOffice
(Incubating) or Apache OpenOffice (INcubating) Help Files. These projects
shall not be used.

At least the translation of the help for Finnish which is found in issue 119066
is not available in project Apache OpenOffice 3.4.x Help Files.

Thx again, Oliver.

Now there is line for 3.4 help file too on page https://translate.apache.org/fi/
I can confirm that all Finnish text are missing. This is not normal.

Risto

Hello!

Below is message which tell that my CLA is received. But i don't know what PMC mean or who he is? I just want translate to Finnish and read that

The easiest way is to get access to the language you want to translate is to
become a committer. Maybe we find another solution but why not becoming a committer?
The first step is to sign a iCLA (http://www.apache.org/licenses/icla.txt) and send
it back to Apache. (Jürgen Schmidt)

By the way: those acronyms are strange for newcommers. I have learned that
Neatherlands is very popular (-;

Dear Risto Jääskeläinen,

This message acknowledges receipt of your ICLA, which has been filed in the
Apache Software Foundation records.

If you have been invited as a committer, please advise the project PMC that
your ICLA has been filed.

 To dos would be.

 (1) Create a page that explains things either in the podling site, either
wiki, or ooo-site.

I wonder whether this page would be appropriate:

http://www.openoffice.org/download/contribute.html

That is the one that we currently point users to as they download OOo
3.3. It seems to cover all the bases, getting help, mailing lists,
etc. It even might direct some dimes to the treasury.

Maybe just change the header to Thanks for downloading OpenOffic.org
?? That would then cover both bases.

 (2) Redirect all registration[0-9].services.openoffice.org requests to that
page. This would be a JIRA ticket for INFRA after doing (1)

 Volunteers?

If there are no objections I'll do the above.

 Hi Tobias,

Thanks for the report on the registration page.  This outage is
intentional. We are no longer doing user registration with
OpenOffice.org.  Our next release will remove this option so you do
 not get that error message.

The closes thing to registration we have is a mailing list that
users can sign up for to receive updates from the project, such as
announcements of new releases.   If you want to subscribe to this
list, send an email to:   ooo-announce-subscr...@incubator.apache.org.

Thank You very much!

I find that
1) I am not registered in
2) There is no link for registration
3) I can make quite permanent translation by Lähetä (Send?) button
4) If I use Ehdota (Suggest?) button it is made by nobody.

Number 3 is quite insecure I think?
I like to register myself in Pootle system.

Now there is Finnish translations in Pootle at level OOo 3.3 what is latest translation.
How to update English part to level AOO 3.4?
As I test Nobody can made suggestions but who can approve translations? I think those who have their names in those translation po files are quit secure choice.
