It can be eliminated. Put " " in instead as I'm not sure what will
happen if it is empty - probably the perl borks (I learned a new word from
 infra) or "null" will appear.

Yup, me too. I did the work below. A null is now no worry.

I'm thinking about the sledgehammer doctype change. Probably soon, but I need
to find a good exemplar to copy.

OpenOffice.org previously was an open source project sponsored by Sun,
then Oracle. At that point it had its own branding, which you can see
at http://www.openoffice.org. The project has come over to Apache,
along with the trademarks and websites. We need to adapt it to Apache
branding practices, which means we it must be called Apache
. We voted to call it Apache OpenOffice (dropping the
".org" in the name)

You can see the primary Apache branding elements on the
http://www.apache.org website.

The goal -- perhaps unstated -- was to update the existing
OpenOffice.org logo to the new name and add a hint of Apache-ness to
it.

And as a follow up to that new branding, generate a set variations of
that for the website, as well as special variations for use by 3rd
parties to express support for the product, perhaps a "get Apache
OpenOffice" or "Download Apache OpenOffice" or similar.

So, the move to Apache has driven this change, and compliance with
Apache branding guidelines would be one measure of success. As Kay
said, evolution over revolution is another part. I don't think we're
looking for a radically different logo from predecessor versions of
OpenOffice.

Here is a quick and easy how to.

 (1) Add the new logo to ooo/ooo-site/trunk/content/images/. directory

 (2) Edit the brand file in ooo/ooo-site/trunk/content/brand.mdtext

Change the logo parameter to the new name.

Since you have included most of the tagline then modify that to
 "(incubating)".

I am referring to the Text that gets inserted to the right of the logo.

{{ headers.tagline }}

The {{ headers.tagline }}

Now I could program as this:

{% block tagline %}{% if headers.tagline %}{{ headers.tagline }}{% endif %}{% endblock %}

And then the row can be deleted.

I'll do that now.

Hi Dave,

Ok - I thought that the decision was that the word incudating is not
needed on the logo graphic when the page displaying it includes the
Apache Incubating graphic - am I wrong on that?

Hi Kevin, Dave, et al

@Kevin, thanks for the questions, very much.

Now if only there were some good answers...

Speaking only from what I've been putting up the idea(s) that I try to
keep in mind are:

Change as evolution over revolution.

One community member, Graham Lauder, has done I think I think are
putting forward the idea of more radical change, from the perspective of
visual branding. I believe he, maybe someone else, has started putting
together some wiki pages covering a branding language - that needs to be
expanded most likely.

Anyway - I mostly just wanted to ping back and say that this is
something that needs attention and look forward to new ideas and
efforts...so welcome!

Best wishes,

Re: [FORUMS] landing page/logo design

2012-03-19 Thread Kevin Grignon
Dave and Drew,

Hey there, my name is Kevin and I'm new to the effort. I'll like to
contribute to the branding, UI styling and user experience moving forward.

I've taken a look at the logos proposal pages, and their are some great
elements. I'm having a hard time selecting which is most appropriate
because I'm unclear on the design brief. In other words, what is the
message? what are the requirements? and ultimately? what are the criteria
for success for the logo elements.

Is there a wiki page that captures this information? If not, could you
share your thoughts?

Regards,
Kevin

Here is a quick and easy how to.

(1) Add the new logo to ooo/ooo-site/trunk/content/images/. directory

(2) Edit the brand file in ooo/ooo-site/trunk/content/brand.mdtext

Change the logo parameter to the new name.

Since you have included most of the tagline then modify that to
"(incubating)".

(3) You may need to adjust css/ooo.css in a way similar to what you just did
for the forums.

Here is brand.mdtext:
home: home
search: search
name: Apache OpenOffice (incubating)
tagline:(incubating) | The Free and Open Productivity Suite
logo: ooo-logo.png
domain: www.openoffice.org
divid: bannera

The branding is now an ssi, these are non-sledgehammer changes. Have fun!

Dave

Correct tag syntax for empty tag is
Notice the position if the slash and the blank before the slash.

line 328
closing tag . The slash is missing.

Problem with div and p around line 300
div is not allowed inside p
div is empty

'id="get-aoo button"' in footer has a blank, but I think that is not

Howdy,

OK - have come to a reasonable point on this I believe.

Set all links for the graphics, license, contact, updated page
meta-information.

Added a couple of links just above the CSE input box:
one for the documentation section on the wiki, the mailing list overview
page and what I'm assuming is the quasi-official (is it?) Google+ page
for Apache OpenOffice.

Not sure these should be here or if this is exactly the best links,
really looking for feedback here - but not to waist to much time on it,
we can adjust this stuff easily enough over time IMO..

The proposed replacement can be reviewed at:
http://baseanswers.com/temp/index_test.html

@Raphael - To get it on the VM I suppose the easiest (for me for sure :)
and fastest way is, just put everything in an archive file and send it
to you via email?

otherwise - off to point to this in a forum post also.

Thanks,

This rocks!

(1) I love the Google search!

(2) Consider wrapping the topnava div within a topbara div.

(3) The Get it here! logo is great but doesn't yet link to anywhere.

I really want to change the logo on www.openoffice.org. Do you have a
candidate? Let's do it tomorrow.

Re: [FORUMS] landing page...

2012-03-17 Thread Dave Fisher
Hi Drew,

In your copy of ooo.css remove the height parameter on line 433 or change it to
100px.

#ooo-logo {
  height: 104px;
  padding-top: 4px;
  padding-left: 8px;
}

If you do that the logo will be at its natural size and be sharpest.

Dave

Thanks so much.

The clear div turned a trick.

Also - I would like to propose the use of a Google CSE on the page, for
quite a while I've thought that something better could be done with
empty space on that page.

The Community Forum logo is good, but the words "Community Forum" are a little

The lower right logo is cool, but not yet a link.

As part of the doctype fixes I plan to fix some slight errors in the templates

Thanks to both of you...as far as I'm concerned, if you come up with
something that works, just put it out there! :)

oK - great, the old page used the style sheets from the old OO.o site -
I am fiddling with what I have here, now, what I've done is taken the
file ooo.css from the new site and just making the necessary changes to
use a copy of that for the styles - I'm not sure that is even no the VM,
but if not I suppose it should be..

So - it's not quite right just now
- I've got the navigation, footer and content sections looking good,
working on the header section..shouldn't take long - I'll put a link
here and the forum, as I said, and then sure I can just shoot it to you
for final deployment.

+1 You can also use the existing page as template. If you sameone have a
proposal, I can do the change on the Forum VM, I have shell accass.

Yes, it was noted and I raised my hand to see after it - and didn't -
thanks for the poke..

Ah - well, I've actually got a static html page that could be a
replacement, I think pretty much ready to go.

I suppose the quickest way forward today would be to put it up, as a
mockup, on the web so folks (here and with a note to the forums) could
take a quick gander - assuming it looks good to others, then I suppose
I should attach it to a JIRA issue..I would guess.

so thanks again for the kick - sorry for being so late - off to handle
that first part now.

[FORUMS] landing page...

2012-03-17 Thread Kay Schenk
Is anyone here capable of changing the landing page for the support forums?

http://user.services.openoffice.org/

The underlying links have Apache branding but not this first page, which is
still Oracle. If this has already been addressed/discussed and I missed the
answer, my apologies.

Thanks.
