2 inaccuracies here:

1)really that is not how marketing works. You notice that Microsoft
brings adverts to Linux-focused publications. Why? Because advertising
is about eyeballs and name recognition.

2)Slashdot is NOT trying to bring down Novell. How siully. There

Yes, I know. That was my point. The Novell deal with M$ offended the
Linux
community... a little like high treason--- just without the rope. You must
understand that Novell can say (and has said) that SLES and SLED (and maybe
openSUSE also) are the *only* linux distros sanctioned by M$... against which
FUD... and more FUD to come... will coerce IT managers to use SLED SLES vs
RHES (or fedora) (whatever)... many many many people also make their living
distribution linux... as it should be... and Novell steps in with M$ to
continue the strong arm coercion tactics that M$ is famous for... bah.

Yes this deal has the appearance of giving linux a better overall
saturation
in the enterprise, and maybe even positive exposure for the home market...
but it *hurts* the international community of linux developers generally. It
hurts freedom, and it hurts computer science. You must understand that many
of us fools are working very hard (not so that M$ and Linux play well
together in the sandbox) rather to make certain that M$ gets scooped from the
sandbox... kinda like cleaning kitty litter... :)

Novell lost its Slashdot internet presence when it decided to play the
coercion card with M$. The deal with Slashdot is not that they are giving
preferential treatment to Ubuntu (for instance) but rather more importantly
they are making a simple statement regarding freedom.

I respect your opinion, and your job/salary... I understand all of
that. But
more important to me than my salary... where I work... etc,... is that
freedom comes first. Some of us work towards a list... its not lame, and its
not foolishness:

No closed / proprietary software, period.
No closed formats... MP3, Flash, etc
No closed exclusionary deals
No coercive marketing tactics...

I'll make you a bet... you break the pact with M$ and whalla... it will
be
front page news on Slashdot... probably for days... and then followed by a
clean review of 10.3a and why Suse is the better way to go (vs Ubuntu) for
newbies blah blah blah

Frankly a lot of folks are still trying to figure out how they feel
about
it... now, you may feel that Slashdot is irrelevant now... but who cares what
capitalism thinks about free expression... on the other hand... you might
want to consider that free expression can benefit the right capitalist who
puts her/his money in the right places... and putting Novell money with M$
was a mistake that will have ranging consequences. (two cents)

(if you want to talk about it, please don't swear at me, thanks)

Best to you and yours..,

openSUSE 10.2 no longer enables ClearType. (which would improve the

Is that the same ClearType that makes the fonts go all fuzzy in Windows?
I love that feature , it makes me feel like I've had a 4-pack of Special Brew.

We did extensive evaluation on the effects of the various settings.
First we assumed that subpixel hinting was just plain broken.
Later we found that some people (including myself) simply prefer crisp letters
with as less blurr as possible.

Is that the same ClearType that makes the fonts go all fuzzy in
Windows? I love that feature , it makes me feel like I've had a
 4-pack of Special Brew.

The whole business of optimizing font rendering on
low-to-medium-resolution devices such as CRTs and LCD displays is very
non-trivial. I have found that it takes a lot of trial-and-error
experimentation to get a combination of font rendering parameters and
type faces for any given video card / display combination.

It should be noted that VGA introduces a very noticeable amount
of blur, as well. It seems to go unnoticed with CRTs, but becomes
starkly visible in an A/B comparison with a DVI-connected LCD display.
But even then, it depends on the video interface, whether VGA or DVI.

Tom's Hardware did an in-depth review of DVI cards a few years ago.
Their conclusion was that ATI had the best, and it's what I chose when
I got my first DVI-equipped LCD display. I am very pleased with the
quality of its video and especially its type display (once the system
software is suitably optimized, of course).

The best I've ever done is under SuSE Linux 10.0 with the so-called
bytecode interpreter enabled. The final version of openSUSE 10.2 does
almost as well.

I've never got a Windows installation to do as well. And Adobe (of all
people) doesn't do all that well in Reader, either, which handles all
its own font rendering.

 Cheers,
 James.

Slashdot is trolling for a long time about openSUSE. They dont publish
a single openSUSE news for decades, unless its ms/novell FUD. Still,
Novell PAYS THEM to put sles ads in their site. Congratulations to the
Novell Marketing team.. And they still wonder why we think they are a
bunch of STUPID people.

Still, there is a post of every beta, alpha, whisper of ubuntu. Heck,
there was 2 posts on debian release. But there were none about
anything related to opensuse.

We should ignore them, as they ignore openSUSE. The site has lost
relevance its been a while, which means its goin in the right way...

I was just noticing that over that past several days of hundreds of
accumulated threads related to openSUSE--- you were involved in four of
them... and each and every time you managed to directly insult one of more
individuals (usually with profane vulgarity) and with total disregard for the
feelings of the present recipient or of the sensibilities of the people that
frequent this list generally. Is there a reason for this... I mean, were you
abused as a child or something..?
