RE: 32 or 64? -- on Solaris 8 ?

2003-08-19 Thread Hemant K Chitale

Has anyone tests / benchmarks showing a multiuser
OLTP Oracle database performs better with
64-bit 8.1.7 on 64-bit Solaris8 then
32-bit 8.1.7 on 64-bit Solaris8 ?

ie, the default Solaris8 install is 64-bit.
If the DB is less than 100GB with db_block_buffers
of less than 1GB and db_block_size of 4K [sorry !]
and there are 10 to 20 concurrent users,
would 32-bit 8.1.7 or 64-bit 8.1.7 be better ?

What about databases with 1.5GB db_block_buffers,
8K db_block_size and 50 to 100 concurrent users ?

Using "noatime" mount-flag to improve performance ?

2003-08-19 Thread Hemant K Chitale

I've recently come across references to setting
the "noatime" attribute to improve performance
of a Database server because Unix does not then
need to update the "last-access time" for each file.

e.g. the Oracle for Linux tuning paper at
http://otn.oracle.com/oramag/webcolumns/2002/techarticles/scalzo_linux01.html
also mentions this.

Has anyone used this on Unix [Solaris/AIX/HPUX/Tru64]
servers ?

RE: Oracle DBA interview for Oracle INDIA Ltd

2003-08-19 Thread Naveen Nahata

Hi Raju,

I think it is unethical for anyone to reply to points 1-4.

As far as point no. 5 is concerned, even though I don't work with Oracle
India, I can get the resume forwarded, simply because if forwarded through
internal sources the resume doesn't get trashed, but you won't get any special
favors simply because it has got forwarded through internal
sources.

But you said you are going to face the interview, then why do you need to
get the resume forwarded? Your resume has already been reviewed,
right?

RE: cursor_sharing in 8.1.7.4 - good or bad

2003-08-19 Thread Cary Millsap
And don't count too heavily upon 9i's "bind value peek" capability.
Here's a simple test that Jonathan Lewis conjured up last year:

PREPARATION. Create data for "select c1, c2 from t1 where c1 = :bind1",
where different bind1 values could have different paths if we used
literals.

1. flush shared pool
   set bind1 = 5
execute query, notice an indexed access (optimal plan for bind1=5)
   set bind1 = 70
execute query, notice that kernel still uses the index

2. flush shared pool
   set bind1 = 70
execute query, notice a table scan (optimal plan for bind1=70)
   set bind1 = 5
execute query, notice that kernel still uses the table scan

The moral: the kernel only peeks once per session.

True, but using binds isn't always an option, like when running a 3rd
party
product. I also could not justify weeks of recoding homegrown software
for
the relatively minor gains we would have using binds. And scalability
(or
lack thereof) didn't seem to be argument enough.

We're using CS=F on 8.1.7.4 on HP/UX 11.0. We haven't yet had a single
issue attributable to it in the 7 months we've been at the .4 release.
There were some nasty issues with 8.1.7.2 (ORA-600 and silently
returning
WRONG data), but like I said, .4 seems to have cleaned that up. YMMV.

Remember that under 8i, you may see some performance DROP by using
binds.
The case that comes to mind is if you're using histograms with ANALYZE
or
DBMS_STATS. Under 8i, the optimizer can no longer "see" the values and
therefore can't use the histograms. Under 9i (R2 only?), you can tell
the
optimizer to peek at the bind variables' values in order to make use of
histograms. We plan on doing this when we get to 9i in order to use a
very
low cardinality index, where less than 0.0001% of the rows is what we
need
to fetch, but 8i won't use the index because of the cardinality.

Your best bet, of course, is to test! HTH! GL! :)

Hi,
No. I recommend that you do not change cursor_sharing if you are doing
it
just to get rid of 4031. There could be serious problems. ora-600 etc.
Maybe
Oracle has fixed everything in latest 817 but I suggest not to take that
chance.
For 4031 you can do the following : pin pl/sql sql preferably at
startup,
use bind variables and periodically check for sql not using bind
variables.
Goodluck.

Re: tuning question when you have a 3GL application

Just wondering if the Software Engineering Team can be taught how to run
their own 10046 trace (capturing the painful "part" of their
application). The Hotsos Sparky tool (free) can help the 10046 tracing,
including the automation of sending the trace file to the team for analysis.

The Hotsos profiler is ideal for analyzing the trace file.

The free trace analysis tools: tkprof and Oracle Trace Analyzer have
some shortcomings.

Your customer tells you that the database is slow, but won't
allow you the opportunity to correct it if that is the case?

As Cary says, your problem is not a technical one. It sounds as
if they don't *want* you to have the opportunity to prove that
the database is not the problem.

RE: Re: Row level security and latch waits

2003-08-19 Thread Madhavan Amruthur
Hi Raj,
Vadim is right and if RLS is implemented without application context then
there would be hard parses especially if there are literals in the policy
function . We have a client warehouse with about 500 users and 300 tables
and FGAC has been working very well and we do not see latch waits.

The policy function has to be devoid of literals as vadim indicated. We
ste up the policy function based on the application context and in order
to look at the where clause generated, an evetn can be set.

Hope this helps.

Thanks

Not only is the escape method cleaner, it's much more efficient. Unless
you have an index on translate(col1,'_','#') (unlikely), that query will
always result in a sequential scan. Ugh.

We haven't yet had a singleissue attributable to it in the 7 months we've been at the .4 release. There were some nasty issues with 8.1.7.2 (ORA-600 and silently returningWRONG data), but like I said, .4 seems to have cleaned that up. YMMV.Remember that under 8i, you may see some performance DROP by using binds. The case that comes to mind is if you're using histograms with ANALYZE orDBMS_STATS. Under 8i, the optimizer can no longer "see" the values andtherefore can't use the histograms. Under 9i (R2 only?), you can tell
theoptimizer to peek at the bind variables' values in order to make use ofhistograms. We plan on doing this when we get to 9i in order to use a verylow cardinality index, where less than 0.0001% of the rows is what we needto fetch, but 8i won't use the index because of the cardinality.Your best bet, of course, is to test! RE: Urgent! Is it safe to aply patch Windows2000-KB823980?

2003-08-19 Thread Reardon, Bruce (CALBBAY)
Hi,
We've applied this on NT4 and W2K servers running 81745 with no Oracle issues.
However, have seen 1 anomaly after this patch:
nbtstat against a remote server no longer shows the logged on user name.
This may have been a security improvement by design.
Note you can still use the freeware psloggedon to see who is logged on to a server
(may require admin privs on the target).

Re: MAXTRANS ignored

2003-08-19 Thread Tanel Poder
Hi!

I remember from somewhere that in 9i, mintrans is 2 for tables as well, like
for indexes in past. Thus maxtrans is minimum 2 as well, even if you set it
to 1 explicitly. You can verify it from blockdump, there's 2 ITL entries in
block even when you have had only one transaction there. So you should try
to do at least 3 *updates or deletes* in different transactions in a block.
If you do inserts then a new block is just allocated when ITL list is
full...

Bill,

I'm in the initial stages of researching Oracle Streams as well. And
like most people, I'm skeptical about jumping in and using a new Oracle
feature. Did you get any useful responses? Anything about performance,
maintainability, etc?
Does anyone else have experiences they can share?

Hello,

env: Oracle 9.2.0.3 on Solaris.
I am looking for any comments, good or bad, regarding Oracle Streams.
We are considering using this to transfer data between some 9.2
databases on multiple Sun machines, and hope that someone would share
their experience with us. Our rationale for using this as opposed to
other replication methods is:
1) streams uses log-based capture
2) captures DDL and DML
3) appears to be Oracle's future direction

I have scanned the Oracle Streams documentation. A google search
and a Technet search turned up a few (mainly non-technical) papers. I
could not find any books on this subject.

I have just vague questions at this point:
1) Are the Oracle docs a good source for setting this up? Do they omit
   any important information?
2) Are there any additional sources of helpful information?
3) Did you encounter any unexpected problems when configuring this tool?
4) Can you provider any measure (subjective is fine) of performance?
5) How painful is this to maintain?
Thanks for any responses.

MAXTRANS ignored

2003-08-19 Thread Daniel Fink
In testing, I found that MAXTRANS seems to be ignored in 9.2.0.3.

I created a table with a MAXTRANS setting of 1. I inserted some rows and committed. In
one session, I updated a row, but did not
commit. In another session, I updated a different row (in the same block). I expected
to see a wait, but the transaction completed
immediately. I dumped the block header and, sure enough, there were 2 entries in the
ITL. There should be only 1 entry (as defined
by MAXTRANS).

Am I missing something? or have I hit an 'undocumented feature'?

Depends on the storage being used and the number of spindles. I definitely
wouldn't go any smaller than 8k, but 8k is probably fine on a JBOD array,
especially if you're matching your filesystem block size to your oracle
block size to your stripe size. You might want to look at changing it to
16k if you're using high-speed disks and let the disk firmware's read-ahead
and large cache give you a bit of a boost. You're probably not talking
about a huge jump, though - only if you're really saturating your disks will
you notice a difference.

As I've said in the past, the rules change completely when you're using a
"smart" array like a Hitachi lightning or an EMC symmetrix, or even a
smaller one like a Clariion or HP EVA. For those, engage your vendor's
performance engineers or hire someone like me to come in and tune your
storage, or just invest a lot of time in learning how your array works and
experiment.

You should look at using VxFS as well - you can eliminate double-buffering
and get asynch kernel i/o, which alone could provide much better throughput.
Depending on your Solaris version, as well, you could be creating
unnecessary memory pressure by using UFS.

Thanks,
Matt

RE: cursor_sharing in 8.1.7.4 - good or bad

2003-08-19 Thread Weaver, Walt

As a counterpoint, we’ve been using cursor_sharing=force in 8.1.7.4 on Linux for quite some
time now and with great success. I’d say it’s worth a try. The only
problem I’ve seen with cursor_sharing=force is
an incompatibility with certain processes in sqlloader,
but nothing we can’t work around.

Cursor_sharing in 8.1.7.2 was a complete disaster on Linux, but they seem to have
gotten it working well in 8.1.7.4.

Hi,

No. I recommend that you do not change cursor_sharing if you are
doing it just to get rid of 4031. There could be serious problems. ora-600
etc. Maybe Oracle has fixed everything in latest 817 but I suggest
not to take that chance.

For 4031 you can do the following : pin pl/sql sql
preferably at startup, use bind variables and periodically check for sql not
using bind variables. Goodluck.

RE: Re: Row level security and latch waits

2003-08-19 Thread Gorbounov,Vadim
Jack,
You are right, app context is treated as a bind variable, but someone may
decide not to use it in RLS policy function. Example (maybe a little unreal
but valid):

CREATE OR REPLACE PACKAGE BODY Oe_security AS

FUNCTION Custnum_sec (D1 VARCHAR2, D2 VARCHAR2) RETURN VARCHAR2
IS
D_predicate VARCHAR2 (2000)
BEGIN
 D_predicate = 'create_date > '''||to_char(sysdate-1)||;
 RETURN D_predicate;
END Custnum_sec;
END Oe_security;

Hence hard parses.

OK, I went and looked in the 8i Concepts manual. It seems pretty clear
that Application Context variables are used as bind variables. It may have
changed for 9i, but I can't see how or why.

"Application Context

Application context facilitates the implementation of fine-grained access
control. It allows you to implement security policies with functions and
then associate those security policies with applications. Each application
can have its own application-specific context. Users are not allowed to
arbitrarily change their context (for example, through SQL*Plus).

Application contexts permit flexible, parameter-based access control, based
on attributes of interest to an application. For example, context
attributes for a human resources application could include "position",
"organizational unit", and "country" while attributes for an order-entry
control might be "customer number" and "sales region".

You can:
- Base predicates on context values
- Use context values within predicates, as bind variables NOTE THIS
LINE.>
- Set user attributes
- Access user attributes "

RE: cursor_sharing in 8.1.7.4 - good or bad

2003-08-19 Thread Jesse, Rich
True, but using binds isn't always an option, like when running a 3rd party
product. I also could not justify weeks of recoding homegrown software for
the relatively minor gains we would have using binds. And scalability (or
lack thereof) didn't seem to be argument enough.

We're using CS=F on 8.1.7.4 on HP/UX 11.0. We haven't yet had a single
issue attributable to it in the 7 months we've been at the .4 release.
There were some nasty issues with 8.1.7.2 (ORA-600 and silently returning
WRONG data), but like I said, .4 seems to have cleaned that up. YMMV.

Remember that under 8i, you may see some performance DROP by using binds.
The case that comes to mind is if you're using histograms with ANALYZE or
DBMS_STATS. Under 8i, the optimizer can no longer "see" the values and
therefore can't use the histograms. Under 9i (R2 only?), you can tell the
optimizer to peek at the bind variables' values in order to make use of
histograms. We plan on doing this when we get to 9i in order to use a very
low cardinality index, where less than 0.0001% of the rows is what we need
to fetch, but 8i won't use the index because of the cardinality.

Your best bet, of course, is to test! HTH! GL! :)

Re: Re: Row level security and latch waits

2003-08-19 Thread JApplewhite

Has anybody applied Windows2000-KB823980-x86-ENU on their boxes hosting the Database?
We are running 9i 9.0.1.1.1 on an Windows 2000 advanced server and our network group
is patching all the systems. Is there anything that I need to watch for?
We are also runing 9iAS ver 1.0.2.2.0 on Windows 200 advanced server, anything to be
aware here?
Any information is very welcomed.

cursor_sharing in 8.1.7.4 - good or bad

2003-08-19 Thread Fedock, John (KAM.RHQ)

Does anyone have any
experience using cursor_sharing in 8.1.7.4?    I feel I need
to use it due to literal SQL statements being used.  We have had misc 4031
errors off and on and I feel this is my last hope.  I have a very busy OPFS
server (HP-UX).

I did try using
cursor_sharing in 8.1.7.2, and I remember incorrect sorting and other unexpected
results happening.

Thanks for any
input.

RLS doesn't use bind variables? How then does Oracle treat the Application
Context variables that you include in the predicates generated by the
Security Policy functions? If those aren't bind variables then I guess I
don't know what bind variables are.

Please refer me to the documentation on which your assertion is based.

Thanks.

hi all,

in the latest code release, a group implemented RLS and since then
spotlight is constantly flagging 'latch waits' in the system. Yesterday the
latch waits were upwards of 90%.

Most active sessions seem to run the policy function defined as part of
RLS. The worst part was all this wait was only on one node, the other node
was healthy.

While we are trying to capture more information, anything else that we can
do? Any ideas? TIA

Re: automatic switchover??

2003-08-19 Thread Reginald . W . Bailey

Joe, you are correct. The switchover is near automatic but you have to
tell dataguard to switchover. For automatic use in case of failure of the
production database, then you are thinking about failover. I've spoken to
Oracle about this, and according to the analyst I spoke with, failover is
indeed one way. It is automatic and designed to be initiated when the
production server and database are f.u.b.a.r. There is no provision to
fail back to the original production server.

For switchover, you can automate it as much as possible using OEM and
Dataguard, but it is still going to require a little intervention , I
think. Switching over to standby is a controlled fail over and it is
conditional. A true failover is one way. To set up failover, you must put
the failover parameters in the init.ora or binary spfile of the two
databases involved.

I hope this helps.

I'm heading to a data guard meeting in a couple of days, have
implemented it a few times and the DBAs have always been anal enough to
NOT want automatic switchover to standby server, they wanted to control
it. All said and good, new client(damagement) wants the switchover to
happen automagically. I've been trying to find it anywhere but it
always seems that someone must type the "alter database commit to
switchover to standby" on primary and after success, 'alter database
commit to switchover to primary' on the original standby.

I know DG broker handles the applying of logs, etc but i dont see an
option to make those commands to switchover automatically happen, i'm
thinking its that way ON PURPOSE or am i missing something here?

thanks, joe

low number of free buffers in the buffer cache

2003-08-19 Thread Gurelei
Hi.

I have noticed that the number of free db buffers in
my bd cache is pretty low. Based on this query

select decode(state,0,'Free',1,decode
lrba_seq,0,'Available','Being Used'),
'Being Used',state) "Block Status",
 count(*)
 from x$bh
group by
decode(state,0,'Free',1,decode(lrba_seq,0,'Available','Being
Used'),
  3,'Being Used',state)

I see 36000 available buffers and about 1000 being
used. I don't have any complaints about performance
(yet) and I know that too many free buffers indicates
that the db_cache is too big. Is there the minimum
number of free buffers that I would need to keep or
can I just ignore it.

TIA

Gene

Has anybody applied Windows2000-KB823980-x86-ENU on their boxes hosting the Database?
We are running 9i 9.0.1.1.1 on an Windows 2000 advanced server and our network group
is patching all the systems. Is there anything that I need to watch for?
We are also runing 9iAS ver 1.0.2.2.0 on Windows 200 advanced server, anything to be

Re: RE: Row level security and latch waits

2003-08-19 Thread rgaffuri
im fairly certain its because DBMS_RLS doesnt use bind variables now. latch waits
indicates plus your 100 concurrent users.

you can check this by going to v$sqlarea and checking for similiar sql_text
statements. if they are there, then your not using bind variables. there is a query in
tom kytes book. not sure where it is on the web now that wrox is out of business. its
probably on asktom though.

in the latest code release, a group

Most active sessions seem to run the

One more thing to consider in stripe size is the
type of application if its a oltp or dss . In stripe size is 8k on 3 disks which
means oracle can read 24k in parallel which traslates to 3 blocks. If
application really looks for 3 blocks at a time ??

on high read system a stripe size of 32k on 3
disks can make 12 block read at parallel .

I think Ahmed Alomari has some good stuff on io
tuning in book 'Oracle and Unix performance tuning '.

Depends on the storage being used and the number of spindles.  I
definitely wouldn't go any smaller than 8k, but 8k is probably fine on a
JBOD array, especially if you're matching your filesystem block size to your
oracle block size to your stripe size.  You might want to look at
changing it to 16k if you're using high-speed disks and let the disk
firmware's read-ahead and large cache give you a bit of a boost.  You're
probably not talking about a huge jump, though - only if you're really
saturating your disks will you notice a difference.

  As
I've said in the past, the rules change completely when you're using a "smart"
array like a Hitachi lightning or an EMC symmetrix, or even a smaller one like
a Clariion or HP EVA.  For those, engage your vendor's performance
engineers or hire someone like me to come in and tune your storage, or just
invest a lot of time in learning how your array works and
  experiment.

  You
should look at using VxFS as well - you can eliminate double-buffering and get
asynch kernel i/o, which alone could provide much better throughput.
Depending on your Solaris version, as well, you could be creating unnecessary
  memory pressure by using UFS.

  Thanks,
  Matt

As long as you're using software RAID and not

We have a third party application which makes multiple connections

to the database.  The application keeps one connection open for

the duration of the session and then opens and closes one or more

connections

in succession.  Some of the connections only last for a few seconds, so

running the set_sql_trace_in_session stored procedure by hand is not

an option.  All of the connections have the same sid.

Is there any way to trace all of the connections

for a given sid without setting sql_trace for the entire instance?

This is Oracle 8.1.7 on AIX 4.3.3.

I've said in the past, the rules change completely when you're using a "smart"
array like a Hitachi lightning or an EMC symmetrix, or even a smaller one like a
Clariion or HP EVA.  For those, engage your vendor's performance engineers
or hire someone like me to come in and tune your storage, or just invest a lot
of time in learning how your array works and experiment.

You
should look at using VxFS as well - you can eliminate double-buffering and get
asynch kernel i/o, which alone could provide much better throughput.
Depending on your Solaris version, as well, you could be creating unnecessary
memory pressure by using UFS.

Thanks,
Matt

As long as you're using software RAID and not
hardware, you can use vxprint to give you that information.  I believe
a functional syntax that includes the stripe size is vxprint -hrt -g
(diskgroup) .  If you're using hardware RAID, you're going to need
whatever array management tools your vendor cheerfully provided
you.

Hope this helps,

The DW will probably want a mix of last version/all versions.
Reporting or auditing may need to view all versions.

What type of DW is this? Is a simple transaction system or is it more
complex? What I'm asking is whether the individual changes are important or
if only the last value is what you want stored. Actually, there is a good,
active data warehousing list that would probably give you better answers.

Hi,

So it may need to keep several copies of the same data (several changes or

There are 2 designs I can immediately think of :

1. I keep all the data in the same table and I use fields like
last_version_indicator (yes/no), start date, end date.
This is fast since it implies inserting the new record and updating the
previous record.

2. The last version for each rows are kept in a table and the historic are
kept in a second table. Each table has its historic table. This implies
inserting in the core table, insert the previous record in the historic
table and deleting it.

3. another way ?

The ODS must answer the following:
All changes need to be transferred to the DW not only the last version.
End-users will query the ODS (I do not know yet if queries will access only
the last version or not).

Views.
In the case the solution1 is used. Would you used views to do the following
table_t : the table
table_last_version_v : view showing only the last version (with where
last_version_indicator='YES'), used for queries.

In both cases, would you used a view
table_not_transferred_v : view showing records with the
DW_transfer_indicator set to no, that view would be updated by the ETL
processes

or let the the programs do the where DW_transfer_indicator=no.

AW: OpenLDAP instead of OID

2003-08-19 Thread Stefan Jahnke
Hi Dennis

We will do some testing for development DBs using openldap on cygwin (very
obscure setup, I know). Afterwards, I might have to move the stuff to AD
(since the dev site is more of a windows shop). I will have to read some
stuff (I'm more of a UNIX person), so it might take a while before I'm
actually going to find the time to do this (like September).

Hi list

Some people where interested in feedback regarding the usage of OpenLDAP
instead of OID or Names to resolve TNS strings.
Seems to work ;). Here is what to do:

Prerequisite: I used openldap-2.0.23 instead of 2.1, since I had to use
CygWin to test it locally on my laptop.

Bill of materials:

CygWin http://www.cygwin.com, I used the latest version, 1.5.2-1test

Oracle Client, version >= 8.1.6.x

OID LDIFS, can be taken from $ORACLE_HOME/ldap/admin, if the OID option is
installed, or from
Oracle Disks:
Disk3\stage\Components\oracle.oid.server\9.2.0.1.0\1\DataFiles\admin.1.1.jar

HowTo: http://home.nc.rr.com/jtlayton/oid2openldap.html

Simply follow the howto to get openldap running and include the OID schemas.

Then, create an ldap.ora under $ORACLE_HOME/network/admin, which looks like
this:

DIRECTORY_SERVERS=localhost:389
DIRECTORY_SERVER_TYPE=oid
DEFAULT_ADMIN_CONTEXT="cn=Manager,dc=world"

... and change sqlnet.ora to contain:

NAMES.DIRECTORY_PATH= (LDAP)

Finished, enjoy.

automatic switchover??

2003-08-19 Thread Joe Testa
I'm heading to a data guard meeting in a couple of days, have
implemented it a few times and the DBAs have always been anal enough to
NOT want automatic switchover to standby server, they wanted to control
it. All said and good, new client(damagement) wants the switchover to
happen automagically. I've been trying to find it anywhere but it
always seems that someone must type the "alter database commit to
switchover to standby" on primary and after success, 'alter database
commit to switchover to primary' on the original standby.

I know DG broker handles the applying of logs, etc but i dont see an
option to make those commands to switchover automatically happen, i'm
thinking its that way ON PURPOSE or am i missing something here?

thanks, joe

hi all,

in the latest code release, a group implemented RLS and since then spotlight
is constantly flagging 'latch waits' in the system. Yesterday the latch
waits were upwards of 90%.

Most active sessions seem to run the policy function defined as part of RLS.
The worst part was all this wait was only on one node, the other node was
healthy.

While we are trying to capture more information, anything else that we can
do? Any ideas?  TIA

RE: Design question, historic and views

What type of DW is this? Is a simple transaction system or is it more
complex? What I'm asking is whether the individual changes are important or
if only the last value is what you want stored. Actually, there is a good,
active data warehousing list that would probably give you better answers.

Hi,

In an ODS, it is feed in near real time during the day and pushes data to
the DW and other systems at night.
So it may need to keep several copies of the same data (several changes or
the DW can be offline so the the ODS may need to keep several days).

All tables have a surrogated PK and the PK from the source systems are used
as alternate non-unique keys.
All tables will have a DW_transfer indicator (yes/no)
There are 2 designs I can immediately think of :

Would you used views to do the following
table_t : the table
table_last_version_v : view showing only the last version (with where
last_version_indicator='YES'), used for queries.

In both cases, would you used a view
table_not_transferred_v : view showing records with the
DW_transfer_indicator set to no, that view would be updated by the ETL
processes

or let the the programs do the where DW_transfer_indicator=no.

Thanks

hi all,
in the latest code release, a group

Most active sessions seem to run the

only on one node, the other node was healthy.
While we are trying to capture more

If you've specified directory names and file names for the database / redo
log / control files,
check that the values are correct. -- e.g. you can use a FILE VARIABLE to
specify directory
names but the variable name itself may be mistyped -- if any of the values
are incorrect,
the installer just returns to the same ending screen. Go BACK to the
screens where you
specify file names and check the FILE VARIABLEs, directory names and file

Have just installed Oracle 9.2 and am trying to use dbca to create a
database. Even though I select to create a database it just displays the
template with the option to save as HTML, but does not create the database!
Am I missing something here?

It is more complex then this.
AFAIK, this will work with another LDAP, like AD.
We are working with windows domains, so it will not work.

its the way the taem is organized. all communication goes through the product managers
to the client. No direct access for the technical people.

i dont make the rules. I just have to live with them. Ive been onsite with clients

So Im looking for things to make my life easier... :(

2003-08-19 Thread Daniel Fink
Cary is spot on. The technical problem is fairly easy to address. The political
problem is the real issue. Will your manager support
you in laying down the 'rules of engagement'? Do you have the ability/support to push
back and say "I will be glad to help, but I
need the following from the development team/testers/users. 1) Full access to the
database in question. 2) Interaction with the
users experiencing the problems. 3) The ability to run tests, craft proposed solutions
and test them for response time

RE: dbca and finish button

2003-08-19 Thread Hately, Mike (LogicaCMG)
John,

are you seeing any java errors in the window you used to start the DBCA?

There's a problem where the installer can stick at this point. It's
described in Tech. Note 131761.1 on MetaLink. Effectively there's a problem
in the listener.ora (an ADDRESS entry with no HOST entry) that causes DBCA
to choke. kind of an old error but you never know!

Have just installed Oracle 9.2 and am trying to use dbca to create a
database. Even though I select to create a database it just displays the
template with the option to save as HTML, but does not create the database!

Am I missing something here?

Your customer tells you that the database is slow, but won't
allow you the opportunity to correct it if that is the case?

As Cary says, your problem is not a technical one. It sounds as
if they don't *want* you to have the opportunity to prove that
the database is not the problem.

The last time that I had that problem the DBCA window extended off the
bottom of the screen and the FINISH button was under the taskbar. Silly, I
know, but there's something about that screen that doesn't prompt you to

You should use "identified globally" when creating users. That will consult

I am in the middle of implementing Oracle Advance Security. Finished the
initial testing and on the way to implement a test case. On the way I found
out that you need Oracle Advance Security for this.

There is a problem that you need to address: How you synchronize the
passwords when user change his password? Say David get to work in the
morning and his password expired and he change it. Now a DBA must change the
password in OID to allow him to logon with the new password. That's means
that the DBA know al the passwords of all the users. BIG security breach.
Also a lot of work for the DBA or the security administrator.

We use Novell now and there is a product that do the work.
It will send to OID the new password and also add or delete users as changes
are applied in Novell.

You still have to give permissions, via global rules, to the users so that
adding a user does NOT let him access Oracle.

Re: tuning question when you have a 3GL application

2003-08-19 Thread Tim Gorman
STATSPACK is a standard component of the Oracle RDBMS. Needing approval to
use STATSPACK is like needing approval to use SQL*Plus.

It is the "canned scripts" that should need approval, not a standard RDBMS
component like STATSPACK... :-)

  ORACLE-LSubject: Performance Query - help
  Hi
  all,

I have a query which takes 4 seconds to execute. The query looks
  like:

  SELECT DISTINCT tfc_fct_value
  FROM
  PD_TMP_AGG_VALS_5071_544,PD_OUTPUT_ITEMS,tp_fact_ctl
  WHERE OUI_OUT_ID=5071
    AND OUI_FACT_ID IS NOT NULL
    AND
  oui_item_type=tfc_item_type
   AND vd17=oui_fact_id
  ORDER BY tfc_fct_value

  Another query
  follows this :

  SELECT DISTINCT tfc_fct_value
  FROM PD_TMP_AGG_VALS_5071_544,PD_OUTPUT_ITEMS,tp_fact_ctl
  WHERE OUI_OUT_ID=5071
    AND OUI_FACT_ID IS
  NOT NULL
    AND
  oui_item_type=tfc_item_type
   AND vd18=oui_fact_id
  ORDER BY tfc_fct_value

  Each of these
queries take approximately 4 seconds to execute.
As you can see above, the two
queries differ in the vd columns. I need to execute the same queries atleast
  twice for various conditions.
  The
  queries return 4 rows.

  Initially I was
creating a temporary table to hold the result set and then query the
  table.
   Later it was
decided that there could be few more queries with differing vd, taking values
  like VD19, VD20 etc..

  Now, my question
is will it be alright if i create say 5 temporary tables for each of the
distinct VD values or execute the query without creating
  tables.

  Suppose i have 5
  vd values viz VD17, VD18, VD19, VD20 & VD21... If i am not creating
temporary tables, and i am running the same queries twice ( this is for some
  other condition ), it would take around 2* 4* 5 = 40
  seconds...

  Whereas if i
create tables and then query through them, it would take around 22 seconds..
This is because once the table is created for the first time,,

  then querying it
  is faster..

  Now can anyone
please tell me if creating temporary tables is fine or is there

Re: SQL Navigator

2003-08-19 Thread Yechiel Adar
I think it depends on the type of user.

Our DBA team use TOAD for some years now and we are happy with it.

For developers we use PlSqlDeveloper (http://www.allroundautomations.com)
and it is a great tool that cost much less then SqlNavigator.

Was a low cache hit ratio the only 'problem'?

Were jobs taking longer than normal?

Were users complaining of a slow system?

Did your average response time shoot up dramatically?

I'm afraid you may have succumbed to the dreaded disease,
 CTD, or Compulsive Tuning Disorder.

This is the urge to tweak database parameters due to some
arbitrary threshold. even though everything seems to be
 working fine.

It isn't your fault, as a number of publications in the
past, including Oracle's, have taught that having a block
cache hit ratio, or BCHR, lower than 90 or 95% meant that
 your system was performing poorly.

The first thing to do is set your db_block_buffers size
back to a value that allows you to start the database.

Then head on over to http://www.hotsos.com and register
for the site. Click on 'Knowledge On-Line' at the top
of the page, and get the paper "Why 99% Database Buffer
Cache Hit Ratio is NOT Ok".

There are other useful papers there as well, and indeed
many other sites where you can find useful information
about BCHR. This will get you started.

Of course, someone (Connor McDonald I think) wrote a nice
utility that will increase your BCHR for you, but I don't
think you want to use it in production. :) It's chief
purpose is to underscore the futility of trying to tune
via the block cache hit ratio.

You could always move to W2K AS which will let you address upto 8GB of RAM (maybe
more), we have our current servers with 8G of RAM. There are some changes you need to
make also if you want a single Oracle instance over 2GB in size.

We are using the 8GB of RAM to run 8 small Oracle databases ( < 50GB each).

We are running oracle 9i on Windows 2000 Server. I recently started
administering Oracle on Windows 2000 and noticed that when the oracle.exe
process consumes 1450+ Mb of memory, we run into out of process memory
error. We ended up recycling application servers every time this has
happened and it really is a painful situation. I have been told that
eventhough the machine has 2.5 Gb of RAM, Windows cannot address memory
more than 2Gb and if you take out the memory needed for the OS, the
effective memory addressable by process comes close to 1500Mb, which is
what I have been noticing. First of all is this true?

We are hoping to migrate to a 64 bit operating system like Windows 2003.
Would it solve our problem? How stable is Windows 2003?

Re: Auth via Active Directory

2003-08-19 Thread Yechiel Adar
I am in the middle of implementing Oracle Advance Security. Finished the
initial testing and on the way to implement a test case.
On the way I found out that you need Oracle Advance Security for this.

There is a problem that you need to address: How you synchronize the
passwords when user change his password?
Say David get to work in the morning and his password expired and he change
it. Now a DBA must change the password in OID to allow him to logon with the
new password. That's means that the DBA know al the passwords of all the
users.

Mitchell,

Which portion of the statspack report suggests increasing the cache size?

Maybe you could post that portion here.

The cause for poor performance needs to be located and corrected.

What are the user complaints specifically?

Have you checked to see where your system is spending its time?

This query may prove helpful in that regard:

col event format a35 head 'EVENT NAME'
col total_waits format 999,999,999 head "TOTAL|WAITS"
col total_timeouts format 999,999,999 head "TOTAL|TIMEOUTS"
col time_waited format 999,999,999 head "TIME|WAITED|SECONDS"
col average_wait format 9 head "AVG|WAIT|100ths"

set line 150
set trimspool on

select
event,
total_waits,
total_timeouts,
time_waited/100 time_waited,
average_wait
from v$system_event

Please see the official O

dbca and finish button

2003-08-19 Thread John Dunn
Have just installed Oracle 9.2 and am trying to use dbca to create a
database. Even though I select to create a database it just displays the
template with the option to save as HTML, but does not create the database!

Am I missing something here?

John
