Memang kasar kau - the english version is "you pay peanuts, you get

I like to commend your post again as spot-on. Benefit of FOSS is
freedom, not free lunch.

Making business using OSS is still hard for us, maybe the skills that
we have and the believe that using OSS should be cheap... (haiya)...

Im against using costs saving as a benefit because it make our OSS
industry suffers. Its may good to present to politicians but its has
negative impacts.

We can see this from our friends doing freelance and companies that
moving aways from supporting OSS as business models. They suffers
because the amount paid could not cover the increase costs during
services.

I always said. The amount that we save from licensing should be invest
back to OSS industry by paying services that will benefits to all.

RM1000 that we save, we can used that to hire OSS consultants to give
services like network consultancy, training and configuration.

This will increase our human capitals skills set and knowledge.

They want quality services but tapi mahu bayar ciput. (want to pay
small amounts)

Mungkin ayat ini kasar. Tapi peribahasa saya "Dibayar taik dapat taik".

Yes haris, i agree, attended his last talk at MSCOSCONF here last time
and even talked to him after his talk and gave him my webeconomy pdf
about around the same subject of institionalising FOSS.

My contention to the crowd here is still that we are too kiasu when it
comes to selling FOSS. For example i spoke to an MSC company (name
withheld) exhibitor at the MyGOSSCON on how he intends to sell his
services and he said, "give free to some US vendors, they give him back
at least 10 pax trainings".

No one thinks of selling against the giant SAP, cos precisely SAP is not
software but 90% services, unlike Microsoft which is quite canned DVDs.

[osdcmy-public] Entrepreneurship For OSS Developers

2009-11-07 Terurut Topik Harisfazillah Jamel

I post this so I can be poke by all of you to remind me, next year to
bring Tim for our conference. I believe this is good for our
developers and freelance to learn and be guide about entrepreneurship.

I will propose a workshop during conference that we can invite
entrepreneurs to meet developers and discuss collaboration.

Managers working in the social network with a free software platform

Timothy Ney, the Linux Greenhouse, virtual incubator of companies and
projects in open source, will share the results of studies of the
Linux Greenhouse in 2009, led by a team of Harvard Business School, to
promote the incubation and growth of resources for Free Software
projects . Some entrepreneurs interviewed for the research came from
Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay, with many of the participants of the
workshop 'Linux Greenhouse' in Latinoware 2008.

Most respondents described the technical competence as one of its
great strengths. Its weaknesses were the lack of ability in business
and sustainability. When they had confidence in their abilities to
build applications, and more importantly, open source, they did not
know how to get funding, what business models will be employed to
offer customers, develop sales strategies, or how to create scalable
solutions.

To address these needs, the Linux Greenhouse is creating a social
network for entrepreneurs and professionals, is recruiting companies,
cooperatives and public sector to integrate them into the network.

Timothy Ney lead workshops entrepreneurship with the use of open
source software, as well as talk during Latinoware 2009.

Linux Greenhouse workshop

The workshop is targeted to social entrepreneurs and public projects
in the middle stages of development.

Companies and projects interested in participating should during the
workshop, make a presentation from 5 to 10 minutes. After each
presentation, other participants will give a peer-to-peer feedback on
the strengths and obstacles of the projects outlined.

To participate in the workshop Linux Greenhouse, during the
Latinoware, go to Lab 2 Block 9, and talk to the mentors.

The Linux Greenhouse will direct participants in helping:

* creation of new products or services;
* expansion of current products or services;
* insight on how to join a new market;
* new procedures in the management and organization of work.

Is this similar to what google is offering for say USD 50 per user?
complete with gmail with corporate domain, docs sharing, calendaring,
synch etc etc etc...
Maybe the diff is google has super infrastructure and zero deployment
cost and maintenance..

[osdcmy-public] Re: Support In Open Source Solution

2009-11-07 Terurut Topik Marcus

Hi Hasanuddin,

You can deploy your solution on VMware on Windows Server if its linux
based. If they ask why, you say "This is virtualization in action, fully
supported by Windows Server"
If its PHP based app, just load in the WAMP package on Windows, works
the same.

Marcus.

Welcome to the other real world.
You have to face it, for most normal  IT admins today, they have so much
to do, they rather run Win Server of which any SI companies are able to
support
and of which the features are rock solid. When something screws up, its
bound to be in the knowledge base of MSDN and fixes are already in
Autoupdate.
Digging forums is a complete waste of time unless its your hobby or
personal interest in the project, at the end if someone has to pay, they
don't really care
if its  open source or not, after all, how many are programmers at heart
or have time to even look at the source codes. In Windows, when you ask
for support
if this guy can't do it, there are thousands lining up to serve you and
each with a low price, as an end user or Admin you get the power to choose.

What is FREE initially, might not be cheaper in bottom line.
Read :
http://searchenterpriselinux.techtarget.com/news/article/0,289142,sid39_gci1332528,00.html
Read the attached pdf of a study of Windows Server vs RedHat cost in
near years running, *yeah its sounds bias, but then it always does when
ur on the other side

From what i've seen, Linux manages to cannabalize its own similar
corporate adoption , eg, replacing AIXs, Unix or other expensive Unix
based systems,
replacing Windows Server is hardly true, maybe in hosting companies and
that is just due to costing. I have talked to several hosting companies
in Malaysia, if SmarterMail was
cheaper, they won't even use linux even though its free, the
"proprietary" Smartermail outdone the linux qmail/postfix and support is
a breeze. (no, they don't favor Exchange even
if its becomes cheaper, qualification to manage Exchange server = high
cost).
