R is a freely available language and environment for statistical
computing and graphics. It has over 10200 packages to cater for the
needs of statisticians, data scientists, epidemiologists, ecologists,
econometricians and many more people.

At the School of Medical Sciences, Universiti Sains Malaysia, we
informally introduced R in late 2013 and formally integrated R into
our academic syllabus in 2015. We use RStudio as the IDE for R though
Revolution R is another popular IDE. In the statistic class, we teach
students to read data, perform statistical analysis and produce
reports in R.

Using R makes learning more exciting and using R-markdown helps
students produce nice reports. Our experience shows R requires steeper
learning curve but the challenge and the versatility of R make the
students more engaged and the learning more effective. We feel that
academicians should promote the use of R in their classes.

   - Familiarity with common open source software packages and their use;

 Yang baiknya apabila rakan-rakan kita semakin mahir. Kami yang diluar pun
 perlu juga semakin maju dan lebih mahir. Saya tidak risau, apa yang saya
 tahu dan buat sekarang dibuat sendiri oleh rakan-rakan dalam kerajaan. Itu
 yang bagus, saya boleh tumpu untuk berikan service lain yang lebih baik dan
 mahirkan diri dan kemudian TOT kembali kepada yang lain.

 Yang untung tetap rakyat, apabila ilmu dikongsikan bersama seperti
 komuniti OSS, maka kita akan lebih maju ke depan. Kita rakyat tidak ramai.
 Untuk bersaing kita perlu menjadi pakar berbanding dengan negara lain.

 Kita perlu tunjukkan dengan menyumbang semula ke dunia OSS. Biar ada nama
 Tajul Azhar dalam kod-kod MySQL, Drizzle atau MongoDB.

 Itu sahaja nukilan ringkas tingkat 10, menara rumah sendiri. Keramat. :p

 InsyaAllah tuan, harap cara ini berkesan untuk membuka mata rakan-rakan
 kita di sana.

 Kadangkala perkara baru dianggap 'hype' atau 'terlalu awal' seperti mana
 era MySQL melanda teknologi DB, dan saya rasa government lewat
 mempercayainya.

 Trending dalam government kini, kita dah ramai expert, tetapi kebanyakan
 kecewa dan membiarkan outsource kompeni memperkotak-katikkan kita daripada
 membawa diri dalam kelompok pembangunan yang 'highly-availability'.
 Sebabnya mudah, kadangkala ketua yang tidak berkemahiran dan favourable
 kepada sesuatu kompeni dan tidak mengiktiraf anak buah sendiri.

 Sebabnya mudah, sapa kami, apa kemahiran kami dan akhirnya kebanyakan
 hanya aktif di medan 'underground' yang lebih terbuka, mudah berinovasi dan
 mengiktiraf orang di bawah.

luar, industri dan komuniti.

Yang baiknya apabila rakan-rakan kita semakin mahir. Kami yang diluar pun
perlu juga semakin maju dan lebih mahir. Saya tidak risau, apa yang saya
tahu dan buat sekarang dibuat sendiri oleh rakan-rakan dalam kerajaan. Itu
yang bagus, saya boleh tumpu untuk berikan service lain yang lebih baik dan
mahirkan diri dan kemudian TOT kembali kepada yang lain.

Yang untung tetap rakyat, apabila ilmu dikongsikan bersama seperti komuniti
OSS, maka kita akan lebih maju ke depan. Kita rakyat tidak ramai. Untuk
bersaing kita perlu menjadi pakar berbanding dengan negara lain.

Kita perlu tunjukkan dengan menyumbang semula ke dunia OSS. Biar ada nama
Tajul Azhar dalam kod-kod MySQL, Drizzle atau MongoDB.

Itu sahaja nukilan ringkas tingkat 10, menara rumah sendiri. Keramat. :p

 InsyaAllah tuan, harap cara ini berkesan untuk membuka mata rakan-rakan
 kita di sana.

 Kadangkala perkara baru dianggap 'hype' atau 'terlalu awal' seperti mana
 era MySQL melanda teknologi DB, dan saya rasa government lewat
 mempercayainya.

 Trending dalam government kini, kita dah ramai expert, tetapi kebanyakan
 kecewa dan membiarkan outsource kompeni memperkotak-katikkan kita daripada
 membawa diri dalam kelompok pembangunan yang 'highly-availability'.
 Sebabnya mudah, kadangkala ketua yang tidak berkemahiran dan favourable
 kepada sesuatu kompeni dan tidak mengiktiraf anak buah sendiri.

 Sebabnya mudah, sapa kami, apa kemahiran kami dan akhirnya kebanyakan
 hanya aktif di medan 'underground' yang lebih terbuka, mudah berinovasi dan
 mengiktiraf orang di bawah.

  1. Firstly I would like to thank OSDC.my for inviting me to
 this dinner and also to talk on a subject about which I cannot claim
 to know much.

  2. I am 84 years of age, too old to learn new things.  It is
 an embarrassment.  I was among those who suggested Linux open source
 years ago.  I had almost forgotten about it.  And now you tell me you
 have an Open Source Development Club here in Malaysia.  I read your
 brief Charter on OSDC.my.  I must admit I can hardly understand it.

  3. You talk in an entirely new language which I have
 difficulty in understanding.  This is made worse by the frequent use
 of acronyms which I always fail to remember what they represent.

  4. I am amazed at the use of such words and terms like Foxie,
 Ubuntu, GNU, Perl, Ruby, Phyton, Fedora and many others, which are
 the names of animals, precious stones and clothing – it goes to show
 that technology creators can be whimsical and relate to the mundane
 and the ordinary.  How else can a sophisticated thing like a computer
 be called Apple.  Then you have search engines called Yahoo and
 Google.

  5. But the speed of progress in the information age is
 mind-boggling if we take for example the development of the telephone.
  The cellular phone which initially was to be a replacement for a
 limited range radio phone is today a computer, a calculator, a TV and
 Internet receiver and dispatcher, a camera and about everything else
 that we can imagine an electronic equipment can do.  Its range now
 covers the whole globe, and the sound is fantastically clear.  It once
 saved a man’s life from a tiger attack because he could call for help
 with his versatile cellular phone.  I would have been eaten by the
 tiger because I don’t carry my cellular.  I depend on my staff.

  6. The knowledge that we can access through the computer are
 limitless.  It is said that we can study for a post graduate degree
 simply by owning a computer.  Though not computer-savvy I have found
 the computer invaluable for verifying historical facts and data about
 almost any event that had taken place centuries ago or yesterday.

  7. But like all things available to men, knowledge and its
 acquisition can be for evil as much as for the good.  The blogs for
 example can be used to demonize people, scare and frighten them and
 create panic.  The SMS can be used for similar purposes.

  8. But we know how useful they can be for making the truth
 known and for individuals to air their views and feelings freely.

  9. I was told by some people a long time ago that when we use
 the Internet, whatever you do or write would be recorded in some far
 away place.  There is no secrecy.  Since the Government was using the
 Internet a lot, it was frightening to think that some foreign persons
 would know all our so-called confidential records and correspondence.

Together, we beat SOPA in a huge victory for internet freedom.  But this
Saturday, internet freedom protests are breaking out in over 200 cities
across Europe.  Why?

*Because the companies behind SOPA are using international trade agreements
as a backdoor to pass SOPA-style

SOPA's supporters are pushing two agreements: ACTA and TPP1.  ACTA would
criminalize users, encourage internet providers to spy on you, and make it
easier for media companies to sue sites out of existence and jail their
founders.  Sound familiar?*  *That's right, ACTA is from the same playbook
as SOPA, but global.  Plus it didn't even have to pass through Congress2.

TPP goes even farther than ACTA, and the process has been even more
secretive and corrupt.  Last weekend (we wish this was a joke) *trade
negotiators partied with MPAA (pro-SOPA) lobbyists before secret
negotiations in a Hollywood hotel, while public interest groups were barred
from meeting in the same building.*3

Trade agreements are a gaping loophole, a secretive backdoor track
that--even though it creates new laws--is miles removed from
democracy.  Trade negotiators are unelected and unaccountable, so these
agreements have been *very* hard for internet rights groups to stop.

But now the tide is turning.  Fueled by the movement to stop SOPA,
anti-ACTA protests are breaking out across the EU, which hasn't ratified
ACTA.  *The protests are having an impact: leaders in Poland, the Czech
Republic, and Slovakia have backtracked on ACTA.*4  *Now a massive round of
street protests in over 200 cities is planned for this Saturday February
11th.*

We're planning an online protest this Saturday to support the protests in
the streets.  Why?  Because together we can drive millions of emails to key
decision makers--and start tipping the scales like we did on SOPA.

Today was nuts, right?

Google launched a petition.  Wikipedia voted to shut itself off.  Senators'
websites went down just from the sheer surge of voters trying to write
them.   NYC and SF geeks had protests that packed city blocks.

You made history today: nothing like this has ever happened before.  Tech
companies and users teamed up.  Tens of millions of people who make the
internet what it is joined together to defend their freedoms.  The free
network defended itself.  Whatever you call it, the bottom line is clear:
from today forward, it will be much harder to mess up the internet.

The really crazy part?  We might even win.

Approaching Monday's crucial Senate vote there are now 35 Senators publicly
opposing PIPA.  Last week there were 5.   And it just takes just 41 solid
no votes to permanently stall PIPA (and SOPA) in the Senate.  What seemed
like miles away a few weeks ago is now within reach.

But don't trust predictions.  The forces behind SOPA  PIPA (mostly movie
companies) can make small changes to these bills until they know they have
the votes to pass.  Members of Congress know SOPA  PIPA are unpopular, but
they don't understand why--so they're easily duped by superficial changes.
The Senate returns next week, and the next few days are critical.  Here are
two things to think about:

1. Plan on calling your Senator every day next week.  Pick up the phone
each morning and call your Senators' offices, until they vote no on
cloture.  If your site participated today, consider running a Call the
Senate link all next week.

2. Tomorrow, drop in at your Senators' district offices.  We don't have a
cool map widget to show you the offices nearest you (we're too exhausted!
any takers?).  So do it the old fashioned way: use Google, or the phonebook
to find the address, and just walk in, say you oppose PIPA, and urge the
Senator to vote no on cloture.  These drop-in visits make our spectacular
online protests more tangible and credible.

Friday evening, by that time, I no longer had access to the internet
(personally abstaining myself from internet addiction - and not wanting to

Stop Computing Professionals Bill 2011 (CPB2011)

If this Bill becomes and Act, it will hamper the growth and innovation
that is coming from the ICT sector. It will increase the cost to all
spending in ICT and more importantly, it will encourage uncertified
ICT experts to look for better opportunities abroad and accelerating
the brain drain.

OK lets set the soft date for 5 Nov 2011. I will try my best to get a
place fo 60 participants.

We need a second date for standby.

1) This AGM is a official meeting. Not like meetup or workshop we need
to make sure 50 of us come to the meeting. So we need a commitment
list thats we can making sure they are coming.

2) We need to find a place thats easy to access.

3) We need to promote the benefits of Cooperation and KOSTEM. KOSTEM
is like a product that we need to promote and gets OSS community
really involved with it.

This is really happen people. AJK sementara has done their best to
make this happen. Now its our time to make sure we move forward.

No of Participants : 1101
Details :
Program Titian Digital ICT lab was equipped with 41 pcs to a server
that runs on Ubuntu (Open Source) platform.  The lab was donated by
Selangor State Government
Students at SJKT Methodist has been undergoing classes conducts by
Program Titian Digital (Managed byPertubuhan Belia Hindu Pelabuhan
Klang) since June 2011.
Each class was allocated 15 minutes time to run Open Source Kolor
Paint program and design some basic graphic works.
Each student was required to fill us a participation form that to be
handed over before entering the lab.

This is long time ago project involved with Backuppc. You can refer to
this document to setup batch and shell scripts. You may need to
customize and read a lot but its work.

As a result, you should now be able to back up any (and all) files
that are locked under Windows such as registry files (e.g. ntuser.dat)

 i would've gone for clonezilla or mondo-rescue since both can do image level
 backup but i had to power off the source server and that is something that i
 could not live with, unless as a last resort

 on amanda enterprise, system state and files/folders backup can be done from
 its web interface but that is not open source (had to pay for its license
 per server).

 i know that this is a long shot but it would be great to avoid another
 license for the backup server and windows os entirely.

CALL FOR PAPERS IS NOW OPEN!

MyGOSSCON 2011 Program Committee is pleased to announce calling for
papers from interested speakers from Malaysia and around the world for
MYGOSSCON 2011.

Papers covering a variety of topics are invited, e.g. basic research,
novel applications, and industrial experience, with different criteria
for each category. Real-life experiences are of particular interest.

Speakers are free to include other topics deemed relevant to the main
conference theme and the track themes.

INITIAL SUBMISSION

Initial submission should include the following information:
Title
Abstract
Presenter's name
Contact phone number
Email address
Speaker biography
Institution/organization/company/community, if any

FULL SUBMISSION

Upon acceptance of your paper, you will need to prepare a full paper
for submission. Paper must be:
Detail enough that its effectiveness can be evaluated (any appropriate
length to fill up 20 minutes speaking slot)
Paper has to be in Open Document Format or PDF
You will be informed on how to submit your paper.

EVALUATION CRITERIA

1. Originality
Topics must provide a unique perspective, viewpoint or way of doing something.

2. Timeliness and Interest
Topics must contain new and relevant material.

3. Educational Value
An objective presentation that meets the educational needs of the
audience is optimal to enhancing the credibility of the speaker, the
speaker's employer and the conference. Sales pitches are NOT allowed.

NOTIFICATION

Please take note of the following:

1. Reference Materials are Required

Our audience appreciates receiving support documentation to enhance
their educational experience and serve as a reference when they return
to the office. (If you rely on live demonstrations, your reference
materials will be an outline of the demonstration with key reference
points.)

2. 100% Adherence to NO COMMERCIALISM Policy

The educational programs at MyGOSSCON 2011 are NOT the appropriate
place for promoting your company, product, service or solution.

3. No Substitutions

Substitution of speaker or paper is not allowed, except in the case of
an emergency. In the event that a speaker cannot fulfil his/her
commitment due to an emergency, a substitute may be submitted in
writing for approval, however this does not guarantee a speaking slot
for the substitute.

DEADLINE

Abstracts are due by 30th September 2011, before or at 12.00 midnight
(Malaysian time).
Full papers are due by 15th October 2011, before or at 12.00pm (Malaysian time).
Notification emails for accepted papers will be sent starting 30th
September 2011.
Note: notification of acceptance to authors will be done as early as possible.

The GUI was, of course, about graphical applications, but it was more

screen regions, and steps, and flow, but the ground truth of our
efforts doesn’t change. Ideas about using more than one finger
(“gestures!”) or using your whole body (“Kinect!”) are greeted as
thunderous breakthroughs. Think of the possibilities!

 I believe that Mozilla tech is neutral across all platforms and will appeal
 to the tribal FOSS communities.

 I do not know anyone in the Mozilla community - so therefore I need
 assistance from people to make this happen. I will talk with others to get
 their assistance.

Start myself with logo in year 1986 and later BASIC. Learn basic
assembler during those day to hack my energy and shield for a game.
Hehehe

Hacking make us to learn programming.

Upgrade myself to C during my Diploma study. Had a problem during that
day. My C compiler on SVR4 Unix and others are using Windows. Hard for
me to share the source. (how Im going to ftp?)

During my work at a bank

I learn basic Cobol for my work. Yep to adjust certain parameter and
automation for my work. I had use NCR9800 VRX/E and DEC VMS. :)

I had build a log monitoring using Visual Basic 3 and running it on
Windows 3.1 I think.

My main love is shell script. Loving doing it. Love to use it to
automated daliy jobs. And we have build Documents Management System
sharing between branches. The processing and compress with shell
scripts and intergrated with HTTPS and htpasswd.

Yes we had use Linux as our backend for the web server, ftp server,
DNS server and centralize log. Thats during 1999 up to 2004 (the day I
resign)

With shell script I learn PHP4. Buy a book for dummies and learn from
friends. Just for my knowledge. Gila tul buat PHP without framework.

My next love is python. Learning its slowly due to my work load with projects.

Want to build something with cloud... :)

Morale of my story. Don't stop to learn programming. A lot can be
learn from any language that you learn and write and compile.

Hmm during years 86-89 we do had programming competition between
computer clubs around Kuala Lumpur.

One day event with schedule like

1) In the morning we had theory exam and quiz about programming language.

2) and another team will write a program base on any language whole day.

at the end of the day we compile the teams marks and select the winner
from the highest point. we never win but we could meet aweks.. hehehe
my school is only a boys only school.

 friends. Just for my knowledge. Gila tul buat PHP without framework.

 My next love is python. Learning its slowly due to my work load with 
 projects.

 Want to build something with cloud... :)

 Morale of my story. Don't stop to learn programming. A lot can be
 learn from any language that you learn and write and compile.

Yes, I feel sad. Computer syllabus today for primary and secondary
schools make us as a users not as a programmers or technical person.

Anyone, do you learn how to calculate numbers using only 0 and 1 and
later convert to Hex.

Do you learn logic with LOGO.

Do you learn Arithmetic Reasoning for * / + -

Yes math and english are needed and a must to learn programming language.

We, my generation, learn it in form 1. (me lambat sikit form 2 in 1986)

Truly. Its up to my neck now, seeing comments, telling me to make sure
all to be in OSS even in conference, in my photos and things that I do
as OSS advocate.

We are too into it and forget what the users think. From 301 people
attending the MOSC2011 conference, I truly can see only us, the team
in OSS community booth and a few more are using truly OS from OSS.

and I felt wrong putting limits and condition to a sponsor. I'm the
one that want Free for Freedom in software putting limit to people
!!!. Feel so wrong doing it. That's sponsor a famous Malaysian Company
support us for 3 years because they want to see the growth in our ICT
industry.

Issue related to anti-virus given to people sending their feed back
form. Its a courtesy from a company that's want to say they support
OSS Community. Yes they do sell proprietary software. The asset that
they can share to show their support other then their software.

In the field of security, any operating system subject to any attack.
Its all depend how big resource they want to spend to create the
trojan and what benefit they can get.

Its not a promotion, its a sarcasm giving anti-virus to users in Open
Source Conference. What do the users think?

Infront of the feedback form counter we had a booth for OSS community
to promote much better and safer Operating System. :)

Even the Linux CD are given freely to them. Lets them make a choice.
An extra cost to a already costly Ooperating system need to install
anti-virus or just use free and safer operating system.

The Anti-virus CD macam goreng pisang panas. Showing how users think
about their current OS. Its all up to us the OSS community how to
promote and take advantage of it.

If we keep on thinking negative of all the effort thats we keep on
going to get the interest of the usersto OSS, sampai bila-bila we will
stuck will small numbers of OSS users.

 Partnership with LPI to Provide Recognized Linux Certification

 CYBERJAYA, 6 July 2011 – Multimedia University (MMU) today inked a
 deal with Linux Professional Institute (LPI) that would enable
 Malaysia’s first private university to embed even more values into its
 students and graduates.

 The partnership would allow MMU to offer world-recognized LPI-approved
 classes and certification in the Linux operating system (OS). Linux is
 an open-source OS which is used in a variety of devices, including
 desktop computers, servers, routers and game consoles.

 MMU’s President, Professor Dato’ Dr. Muhamad Rasat Muhamad is pleased
 with the partnership, as it is fully in line with MMU’s commitment to
 produce high quality graduates. “We want our students to have the
 highest level of technical skills possible,” he says. “This has always
 been our policy, and is one of the reasons MMU’s graduates are highly
 sought after.” Currently, more than 90 per cent of MMU graduates gain
 employment within six months of completing their studies.

 The university will offer the courses through its Linux Academy. Mr.
 Ibrahim Yusof, lecturer at MMU’s Faculty of Information Science 
 Technology and lead trainer at the Linux Academy, describes Linux as
 an important tool for every IT or Engineering graduate. “Linux is
 popular in Malaysia, especially among developers and system
 administrators. Therefore, if you are certified as Linux-proficient,
 your career choices are that much wider.”

 Ibrahim says that Linux is not just for software developers. “Many
 companies in Malaysia operate a mixed environment,” he says. In such
 environments, typically most end users use Windows desktop systems
 while much of the back end use Linux and open source systems. “More
 and more companies are using Linux as it is free, so definitely there
 is need for certified Linux users, regardless of what the company’s
 actual business is,” he adds.

 The LPI certification will be available from July 2011 to MMU students
 and staff, as well as outsiders. About 30 students are expected to
 enrol every trimester. In Malaysia, MMU is so far the only private
 university offering LPI certification. Ibrahim describes MMU’s Linux
 Academy’s rates as “competitive”, and invites the public to enrol. He
