Re: [ozmidwifery] Absolutely horrified!
Interesting thought - I was recently talking with an aquaintance who is seeing a private ob. She is already being 'primed' for C/S (at 30 wks, primip) due to gestational diabetes. I discussed some of the actual evidence with her and she said that she had learned more in 10 minutes on the phone than in all her A/N visits to date. Went on to say that the A/N visits made her feel patronised, bullied, and upset. I asked her if she would pay any other service-provider $100 a time to be made to feel so unsatisfied and suggested that she 'vote with her feet' and find another place to have her baby. She was surprised to think that it could be an option to change at this stage, and this is a well-educated and professional woman who is actually providing me with a service, so I said that if she made me feel as bad about accessing her service as her ob was making her feel, I would certainly be looking elsewhere! RE: [ozmidwifery] Absolutely horrified!
The things this horrible, horrible man has been saying gets even worse - am I able to publish his details on here? He truly needs to have his butt kicked out of this world... check this out from her cousin: He has been practicing for at least 20 years probably more like 30. He delivered my friends first child and after the episiotomy turned to her husband and asked him how many extra stitches he wanted put in to make her tighter, they thought he was joking and when her husband said so he said no I'm serious I do it for the husbands all the time. He is c/s happy and I know of 2 women who have had to have the c/s wounds re-stitched after he has 'rushed' it. He is also a gyno and I had to see him for ovarian cysts as a 15 year old. The whole experience so traumatised me I ignored all gyno type problems and pains until I was in my early 20's (including pap smears. His (receptionists) were even horrible. The second OB she saw (the one the midwives organised for her) was really good. He sat down and discussed with her what she would like for the birth and told her she could be as active as she wanted. Besides checking in with the midwives a few times pretty much just let her do her thing and only came in when she needed a few stitches after the birth. Thanks (on behalf of her family, I'm her cousin but this is from her mum and dad) for all the support you gave her in the last few days. I've started a discussion and poll on the topic of Obs and if women were happy with the care they received from them, will be interesting to see the results, because BellyBelly is a fairly mainstream site, with a gentle approach where possible (I sneak it in at every chance, and the conversion is slowly working...slowly but surely ;) Here's the link if you want to keep an eye on it: http://bellybelly.com.au/forums/viewtopic.php?t=17164 Best Regards, Kelly Zantey Director, www.bellybelly.com.au www.toys4tikes.com.au Gentle Solutions For Conception, Pregnancy, Birth Baby Australian Little Tikes Specialists -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Janet Fraser Sent: Monday, 21 November 2005 12:28 PM To: ozmidwifery@acegraphics.com.au Subject: Re: [ozmidwifery] Absolutely horrified! Re: [ozmidwifery] Absolutely horrified!
Kelly I started a thread on NP about why women chose obstetric care since I get tired of answering the qn about home birth LOL. It was very revealing. Most women said Because I didn't know I had any other options and I'll never do it again. Very few were truly happy. I note from your own thread someone being happy despite being denied a VBAC so obviously it's pretty low base line for happiness if being forced into unnecessary major surgery is ok, yk? First, he does a stretch sweep without asking me or any prior warning. Then he says he's booking me in to be induced tomorrow, which when I questioned it he tells me I'm going to kill my baby cos I'm past 41 weeks. The he goes on to say 'I'm not into any of that airy fairy [EMAIL PROTECTED] You'll deliver on the bed, on your back. I'm not a vet.' So I said I was planning an active birth, (which is what my Dr prefers) and he says I'll have to see someone else and good luck getting in to see anyone else at this stage of the game. So now I have no obstetrician, no doctor and I don't know what I'm going to do. I'm seriously thinkg about fronting up tomorrow at the Royal Womens to see if I can have my baby there instead of the hospital I'm booked in at - can they turn you away if its a public hospital? This is appalling - beyond belief. my blood is boiling it really is.. RE: [ozmidwifery] Absolutely horrified!
Thanks everyone for your thoughts and replies, it was a huge shock to me but I guess, sadly, that many of you are well used to this. I haven't heard from the woman since Saturday so chances are she's gone into labour. I pray it all went as well as she hoped. Yes, she can turn up to any public hospital with midwifery services and not be turned away. Tell her to have a copy of antenatal paperwork she has (if she has it!!) and the midwives at the hospital can ring her orginal booking hospital and get any records/pathology faxed over - or at least that has happened to us in the past. This is the sort of obs who needs a complaint written about him!! But it will turn into a he said, she said situation. If she goes back to him, take another person with her!! RE: [ozmidwifery] Absolutely horrified!
Oh my goodness Can you refer this woman to a midwife, doula, midwifery student, birthing centre, anyone out there who might be able to support her? She certainly has every right to rock up to a public hospital in labour, but if shes going to do that unannounced, she might feel more comfortable doing it with some support nearby Hope she finds the strength to make changes this late on in the piece, which might ensure she gets the support, and the birth she deserves Tania From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Kelly @ BellyBelly Sent: Sunday, 20 November 2005 3:15 PM To: ozmidwifery@acegraphics.com.au Subject: [ozmidwifery] Absolutely horrified! Re: [ozmidwifery] Absolutely horrified!
She can certainly go to any public hospital, if she gets a chance it would be better to go in and at least get one appointment so that they have a file for her, but if she goes into labour before that's possible they can't turn her away! I spoke to a woman yesterday who had just her first private OB appointment and he told her he would have to put her in the naughtly corner!!! For asking questions. Thankfully she's not putting up with that sort of treatment and is finding out about her other options and probably going public with a midwives team. I hope she gets all the support she needs.
