Joe! Maybe the bitrate of those particular MP3s is too slow to play on
your diskman. Players that play MP3s don't necessarily play all MP3s.

Winamp and audio CDs

2007-03-21 Thread Catherine Turner
Hi,

I want Winamp to play my audio CDs. I'm sure last time I put an audio CD in
Windows listed play audio CD in Winamp as one of the options, but not this
time. I'm using Winamp 5.32. I looked in the Winamp preferences in the
file types and there's a check box for launch Winamp for audio CDs which is
checked.

What's the problem? How can I get Winamp to automatically play the CD, or
at least for Winamp to be an option in the dialog which comes up when you
put any disk in?

catherine I had this problem a couple of times. I took me 6 or 7
times installing winamp and the last time I installed itunes and it
fixed the problem, in other words winamp then came up in the dialog.

I didn't want mindows media player to play my cd's as well. I
had the box checked in win amp and still winamp wasn't in the list.
I just kept reinstalling it, and finally after installing itunes i saw it.
No one has a real suggestion for me, I am running xp pro we 60.
I know some day it will show up but till then?

In My Computer, go to the drive that you use to play CD's. Press alt plus
enter to get to the properties. then press control plus tab to get to auto
play. tab through this and you'll find where you can set what program you
want to use and what things you want this drive to do, including the playing

Unless we got hold of sources to feed into a sound card that had less
 noise
than 32 bits could pick up in a recording, it doesn't seem worth wasting
 the
disk space for the larger wave file even if some card might exist that can
record at 32 bits. I heard in a demo that 64-bit recording is available in
Sound Forge, but don't know of hardware that advertises the ability to
 record using it.

Re: Winamp and audio CDs

2007-03-21 Thread Doc
What other media playing program have you recently installed? One way of
doing this is to open windows explorer and go to the list view of your audio
cd. Highlight one of the tracks and then press the applications key. Arrow
to 'open with' and hit enter. Go to 'choose program' then enter. find
winamp tab and check the box that says, always use this program then enter.

Hi Marijan and others,
The newer Goldwave builds will have this kind of ogg support butt if you are
running an older version do a Google search for k-lite-codec and when
installed, this will give you lots of open and save choices you won't
otherwise have.

Btw Dana, I added a JFw dictionary manager entry of your name so I won't

help with soundcard

2007-03-21 Thread Loren buntemeyer
I have a new computer with a SoundBlaster X-Fi card. After many days of
waiting for the techs to get the on board soundcard for the screen reader and
the SoundBlaster PCI card for music working, the headset and microphone plugins
are still not working properly. I am hoping there are some settings to correct
this problem. This is what they are doing.

The speakers and headset in the front are working when connected to the
SoundBlaster card. The microphone plug does not work in the front but does
when connected to the soundcard directly and only if you have the headset
plugged into the front panel. If I unplug the headset from the front, the
microphone will not work anywhere.

Is this a screwup by the techs that built my computer? They are totally
ignorant of the situation.

Hi Marijan and others,
The newer Goldwave builds will have this kind of ogg support butt if you are
running an older version do a Google search for k-lite-codec and when
installed, this will give you lots of open and save choices you won't
otherwise have.

Unless we got hold of sources to feed into a sound card that had less
   noise
than 32 bits could pick up in a recording, it doesn't seem worth wasting
   the
disk space for the larger wave file even if some card might exist that can

Sound Forge, but don't know of hardware that advertises the ability to

Re: sam broadcaster?

2007-03-21 Thread Steve Matzura
On Mon, 12 Mar 2007 07:37:11 -0400, you wrote:

anyone know how to use sam broadcaster? it's realy good!

If you're asking how to use it, how do you know how good it is?

The only thing SAM BC can do that other more accessible packages can't
is it's back-ended by SQL technology rather than a home-grown database
engine. Otherwise, for the money, Station Playlist does the same
thing, but better.

I will, though, have to give credit where credit is due. Spacial
Audio (and that's not a misspelling for those of you who know that the
word spatial is spelled with a t) invented a programming language,
very geeky and full of lots of tokens and keywords and geeky stuff
like that, to control their software, which other products don't seem
to have a need for.

On the minus side, SAM's event scheduler is an extra-cost program.

Now let's talk accessibility.

I've been using, or attempting to use, SAM BC since version 2. Along
with improvements in their screen layout have come improvements in
screenreader technology, so now, SAM BC Version 4 and Window-Eyes V5.5
seem to go together quite nicely. JAWS still has a lot of problems
with the Delphi-based screen forms and layouts which W.E. does not.
Other than standard menu controls, there is not a single control on
the main screen of SAM that either JAWS or Window-Eyes recognizes as a
standard windows control. That being said, however, most of what
Window-Eyes calls custom controls operate as list boxes, but even with
re-classing in JAWS, it's still not right.

SAM's category management system needs a little work, too. They give
you the ability to have two levels of category, one within another,
that is, but they don't allow you to reference a track by using an
outer-level category name. For example, I have a category called
top40, within which I have three subcategories--artists and albums
(which I've abbreviated to AA), 1hit, and instrumentals. I cannot
tell SAM to play me tracks from top40, or even top40.* (standard SQL
syntax for a key matching a top-level hierarchy and any sub-level)
because the inner categories do not roll up into the outer-level
one. I've argued this back and forth and forth and back with Louis
Louw, Spacial Audio's head programmer, and he says it's coming up in a
future version.

Another thing that SAM has trouble with is something that's so easy to
do in Station Playlist, one wonders why SAM just didn't take the same
approach, and that is, marking the intro and outro points for tracks.
With Station Playlist, you can move a pointer along a timeline and
press a button to hear the marked point in the track, then press
another button to lock it into place. With SAM, you have to enter in
the exact time in minutes and seconds that you want the points to be
stored at. Let me just say here that if there exists in SAM the
ability to move a pointer along a time line like there is in SPL, then
I haven't found out how to do it yet, but it sure would make things
easier and faster, especially with a 50,000-track database.

I'm almost to the point where I feel confident enough to use it for a
live interactive show, but almost.

The sound processing presets that SAM comes with are very good.
They've done a lot of work in cleaning up their audio processing over
the versions, and now I can honestly say I like it. Their crossfading
controls are much easier to use, too.

Well, if you're using JAWS, you can easily tell dictionary manager that

As for AAC vs. OGG, I think that's more a matter of learning to listen
carefully to what your synthesizer says. I use Eloquence, and, although they
are rather close (and I often check what I hear against my braille display),
I can hear the difference when I listen closely.

anyone know how to use sam broadcaster? it's realy good!

That's where you need the MusicOne (also known as M1) add-on. You can

Unless we got hold of sources to feed into a sound card that had less
 noise
than 32 bits could pick up in a recording, it doesn't seem worth
   wasting
 the
disk space for the larger wave file even if some card might exist that
   can
record at 32 bits. I heard in a demo that 64-bit recording is available
   in
Sound Forge, but don't know of hardware that advertises the ability to
 record using it.

thanks gary, i'll check that out. i record a lot of drama, and
   listeners
 ask
for it to be in 128 which they can get in goldwave.

I think you need to ask yourself why you're bothering to go over
   16-bit.
After that, see if 32-bit is available for any other format such as
 line-in.

Wireless speakers

2007-03-21 Thread Terri Lynne Pomeroy
Hi all,
I am brand new to the list, so I may be asking a question that has been
discussed ad nauseum, so please bear with me. I put all of my CD's on my
computer and love arranging them into lists of favorites. My computer is
in its own room with other office stuff. I would like to be able to
pipe the music on the computer into other parts of the house. I had
heard of wireless speakers, but when I went looking, what I saw was sets
of 3 or 5 speakers, one or more of which had to stay hard-wired to the
computer. This appeared to mean that your base would be in one room and
your treble in another. Can anyone throw any light on this for me, and
also perhaps tell me if I have other options?

Thanks much,

TerriLynne

Sorry to hear about your bad luck with the latest version of
Skype. I'm definitely not having any problems with the latest version.

I am also having a small problem with installing this version, that is that
when you get the options of,
create a desktop icon, launch skype after installation, launch skype when
the computer starts, and install skype extras manager, these are all
unchecked, and none of them will check.

Re: Wireless speakers

2007-03-21 Thread Bobcat
There are many wireless speakers on the market. Some are designed for
surround sound applications where you would put the wireless set in the back
and not have to run long cables.

I just heard of another option that interests me. It is a wireless
amplifier. You get to choose and use your favourite speakers. The cool
thing is that it uses something called a T amp which is supposed to sound
like a good tube amp but at a real low price. You can read all about it and
buy one at:
http://www.thinkgeek.com/electronics/audio/862c
ThinkGeek does have wireless speakers as well for under $400. I have no
idea how good they are.

Amphony is a company that sells high quality 5.8 GHz wireless headphones
They also have a wireless amplifier option.

 Hi,
 Thanks Steeve,
I just think I want to report that it actually is a bit quicker then
 earlier versions, as they promise.
