Re: Describe Video Service

2007-06-26 Thread Gary Wood
Hi Paul! Well this is a good point that both you and Bruce hade. The
reason I suggested this is because it was suggested at our Michigan Council
of the Blind board meeting, that the DVS track should be the default one. I
was in favor of that, but didn't quite think of the ramifications. I get
DVS from our State Library. They're on video cassettes, not DVD! I get
DVD's from a company called Netflix on line. I miss the described tracks,
but get the DVD's because I like that DVD sound!

The described track shouldn't be the default track. It's not the blind you

 a dvs track.

Why can't their be a law passed in our national congress saying that

 HI,

Thanks to scripting and to my mate Andrew Hart, my pac Mate can do this.
 A
press of a hotkey brings the clock in focus, you can feal the time
 updating
on the braille display. This will be active until you press the same
 hotkey
which will then turn this feature off. It's pretty cool. It works on my
 pc
 as well.

The Braille N Speak will not work in a broadcast environment and will not
give you a second by second countdown as the hour progresses. What is
 needed

is a realtime touch accessible clock with second hand feedback. Just
 getting

a timer is a simple problem to fix. Just to clarify what is needed I
 think.

The BrailleNote 18 cell is less than $10,000. Another option is an old
braille 'n Speak with a count down timer and stop watch.

It's not really a an expensive problem to solve.

If you have a spare $10,000 you could get a Braille Note which can
 display
 the time by second.
Perhaps a lazy 2 grand could be increased to $10,00 by backing the Hawks

I trust this is not off topic as it does relate to broadcasting in a
digital environment and this list is rich with broadcasters and technical
operators.

I'm looking for a way to monitor the current time by second. This was a
very handy feature of the Braille Lite, but I can't find any other way
 of
 doing it.

Pac Mate does have a stopwatch feature but this is cumbersome when
 you're
wanting a live cue, counting up to mid night etc.

Anyone with any bright ideas. Suggestions off list would be welcome.

I have used Sound forge and i like it for its simple way of editing sound

If it features multitracks thats also fine. Have tried the latest version

Problems downloading and installing Skype

2007-06-26 Thread Vivien Palcic
Hi everyone,

I have been trying since yesterday to download and install Skype 3.2.0.163 from
the Skype website; but as with numerous previous occasions of trying to obtain
past versions from this site, I have repeatedly run into the same problem.
After choosing to save the file (from within the file download dialog) and
picking the folder to save it in and pressing Space on Save etc, hardly any
time passes before I get the audible tone and also the dialog showing 100% as
though the download were complete. When I try to run the file, I then get an
Internet security dialog telling me the publisher could not be verified, and
when I try to go ahead and run it any way, it then says the file skypesetup.exe
is not a valid win32 application (and there's an OK button to get out of the
dialog). I tried downloading it from www.majorgeeks.com but the first few times
I wasn't even getting a file download dialog to enable me to choose to save the
file and where to save it etc, and when I finally did get one, I got the same
result, but on that site version 3.2.0.163 is still listed as a Beta. Any
suggestions/help greatly appreciated. I'm using Jaws 8.0 and Win XP Home.

Forgive me if this is a stupid question, but what are the best settings to

as soon as you pop in the cd one of the options should be to rip using
windows media player.

Btw, you don't rip in the itunes format, and the ipod won't handle wma.
you'll have to rip in mp3. there is an mp3 plugin for windows media player,
but it's nt as good as the laim encoder.

I'd get something like cdex for ripping in mp3.

High Amanda,
You can rip all of your cds with WMP11 as is, but you will need to change
the default settings to MP3.
In spite of what others may or will tell you, you don't need any special
plug ins for this to work for you.
My best regards to you all.

A little tip to download Skype or programs in general: instead of
clicking/pressing enter on the download link on the page simply do it in the

It seems the information bar doesn't let you download it complete and as a

2007-06-26 Thread Chris Skarstad
hi folks
I was able to get a copy of Skype 3.2, and I have temporarily placed
it on my website for those who are having trouble getting it. So,
use the following link to get it:

http://toonhead-online.com/skype3.2Setup.exe
If you get an error message telling you that the page can not be
displayed, I've probably already removed the file. Like I said I'm
only keeping this up there temporarily, so get it while you can. I
understand the frustrations a few of you are having, so this is my
atempt to help.

Note that I've waited until the file was completely uploaded, I
didn't want anyone to try and get it before it uploaded completely.
. but it's there now and the link should work just fine.
Please let me know, privately, off list if you experience any
problems. the address to use is:

Please use that e-mail address because I really, really do not want
to flood the list with any problem reports or requests for other

  I hope this helps folks.
Good luck!

 Hi everyone,

I have been trying since yesterday to download and install Skype
3.2.0.163 from the Skype website; but as with numerous previous
occasions of trying to obtain past versions from this site, I have
repeatedly run into the same problem. After choosing to save the file
(from within the file download dialog) and picking the folder to save it
in and pressing Space on Save etc, hardly any time passes before I get
the audible tone and also the dialog showing 100% as though the download
were complete. When I try to run the file, I then get an Internet
security dialog telling me the publisher could not be verified, and when
I try to go ahead and run it any way, it then says the file
skypesetup.exe is not a valid win32 application (and there's an OK
button to get out of the dialog). I tried downloading it from
www.majorgeeks.com but the first few times I wasn't even getting a file
download dialog to enable me to choose to save the file and where to
save it etc, and when I finally did get one, I got the same result, but
on that site version 3.2.0.163 is still listed as a Beta. Any
suggestions/help greatly appreciated. I'm using Jaws 8.0 and Win XP
 Home.

 Regards
 Vivien

RE: Describe Video Service

2007-06-26 Thread Paul Henrichsen
I agree, but it shouldn't be the primary track as you suggested in your
message. The other issue, although, probably a small one, is that adding dvs
costs around $4000 per movie. I heartily agree that dvs should be on all
DVD's instead or along with that commentary track where the director tells
us why he did what he did.
Honestly! How many times is someone going to listen to that trackgrin?
Having said that, I would think that $4000 would be a small price to pay
when combined with the total cost of a movie so that a large number of
purchasers could have descriptive audio.
I am sure that part of our problem is that the NFB, the ones who purport to
be the voice of the nation's blind, don't believe that blind people should
have DVS. They have come out against it and therefore, will not advocate for
it.
Until we as blind purchasers of DVD's unite within our organizations that
represent the blind and fight for descriptive audio on a DVD or on
television, it will never happen.

That's not what I'm saying at all.
All I am saying is why can't the blind have a dvs track in a movie so that
we can enjoy the same movie as the sited person?
The problem is that I don't think their is enough demand for dvs and so the
marketers don't listen to the blind consumer.

2007-06-26 Thread Gary Wood
Hi Paul! I'm wondering if WGBH has the technology to copy to DVD from VHS
tapes? If they could, they could set up a rental service like Netflix and
now Blockbuster does on line. I pay about $20 a month to rent DVD's that I
don't have to return until I return them. It could be great if WGBH could
do something like this. If so, I would be glad to rent from them, instead
of Netflix!

Re: Ripping Music with WMP11

2007-06-26 Thread Christopher Chaltain
My initial answer is that if size isn't an issue for you, I'd just go
with 100% which is a 320 kbts bit rate. If you click on the RIP menu
button on the main page, you'll see that you can set the bit rate
directly and it can be set to 128 kbts, 192 kbts, 256 kbts and 320 kbts.
I'm assuming this maps to quality settings of 0%, 33%, 66% and 100%
respectively. Unless space is an issue, I'd never use anything less than
192 kbts, but of course there's no right answer here, and it depends on
how much space you want to save and how discerning your hearing is.

Amanda wrote:
 Thanks very much.

I noticed that in the ripping tab, there was a setting for quality which
went from 0 to 100%. What should I set this to?

as soon as you pop in the cd one of the options should be to rip using
 windows media player.

Btw, you don't rip in the itunes format, and the ipod won't handle wma.
you'll have to rip in mp3. there is an mp3 plugin for windows media player,
but it's nt as good as the laim encoder.

I'd get something like cdex for ripping in mp3.

RE: Describe Video Service

2007-06-26 Thread Paul Henrichsen
Marsha! Sadly, that's not true. First of all, movies from WGBH are at least
$30 per movie. Secondly, they are on VHS tape. They are at least twice the
price of a VHS tape assuming you can even find VHS tapes these days. Even a
DVD new release movie sells for between $15 and $20. Older titles by only a
few months can be had for anywhere from $5 to $10 in the bargain bin at your
local Walmart, target, K-Mart, best buy or circuit city.
These VHS movies are bad for two reasons.
First, VHS tapes do not last as long as DVD's and to be properly cared for
must be wound forward and back at least once a year so that they do not
degrade due to magnification.
Secondly, if sighted family members are in the same room, they must listen
to the descriptive audio track whether they want to or not. Even as a blind
person, once I have heard the descriptive audio a few times, I probably
won't care to hear it again.

I have used Sound forge and i like it for its simple way of editing sound

If it features multitracks thats also fine. Have tried the latest version
of Audacity but that crashed several times.
 All the best and thanks,

concert right in front of me! I doubt seriously that Microsoft can match
the finely tuned LAMED presets created after thousands of hours of trial
and error from a bevy of developers around the world.

Why settle for any MP3 extraction when you can have an exact audio copy?

The program has some keyboard shortcuts and it is nearly fully accessible.
What is not easily accessible are tooltips in configuration dialogues,
which mostly can be accessed with a review cursor or an online tutorial.

as soon as you pop in the cd one of the options should be to rip using
 windows media player.

Btw, you don't rip in the itunes format, and the ipod won't handle wma.
you'll have to rip in mp3. there is an mp3 plugin for windows media
 player,
but it's nt as good as the laim encoder.

I'd get something like cdex for ripping in mp3.

 HI,

I'm about to buy a 60GB Ipod, and want to rip all my CDs using WMP11
 (rather
 than Itunes).

Forgive me if this is a stupid question, but what are the best settings
 to
 use for ripping?
 Regards
 Amanda

Kelly,

I haven't been able to find the download section, for that program; I
googled it, but, I may have been too much of a novice, to tell where I was!
Can you give me a URL and some download tips on that one?

Thanks,

Mac Norins

I just installed Exact Audio copy for the first time today. The program is
a geek's paradise, but once thoroughly configured and tweaked, the rips
really sound good. I'm using the latest LAME compression with 256 VBR
joint stereo. When I played the sample rips through my Audiophile 2496
sound card in Winamp in 24 bit mode through my Logitech Z-2300 2.1 Speaker
System, which is 200 watts and THX certified, it sounded like a mini
concert right in front of me! I doubt seriously that Microsoft can match

Re: Sound editor recommendation

2007-06-26 Thread Ricque
Yes, but if you load a larger .wav file into the Sound Recorder,
then you can make your recording on it, and save it as a different file.

why not you try sound recorder on your xp?
it's readily available on your pc and it's simple to use too.
wave files would be just perfect with this little tool.

 Hi all,
What sound editor would you recommend?
I have used Sound forge and i like it for its simple way of editing
 sound
files. I have tried Goldwave, but got back to SF. Any other tips?
If it features multitracks thats also fine. Have tried the latest
 version
of Audacity but that crashed several times.
 All the best and thanks,
 Christian
