Re: Describe Video Service
Hi Paul! Well this is a good point that both you and Bruce hade. The reason I suggested this is because it was suggested at our Michigan Council of the Blind board meeting, that the DVS track should be the default one. I was in favor of that, but didn't quite think of the ramifications. I get DVS from our State Library. They're on video cassettes, not DVD! I get DVD's from a company called Netflix on line. I miss the described tracks, but get the DVD's because I like that DVD sound! - Original Message - From: Paul Henrichsen [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 'PC audio discussion list. Problems downloading and installing Skype
Hi everyone, I have been trying since yesterday to download and install Skype 3.2.0.163 from the Skype website; but as with numerous previous occasions of trying to obtain past versions from this site, I have repeatedly run into the same problem. After choosing to save the file (from within the file download dialog) and picking the folder to save it in and pressing Space on Save etc, hardly any time passes before I get the audible tone and also the dialog showing 100% as though the download were complete. When I try to run the file, I then get an Internet security dialog telling me the publisher could not be verified, and when I try to go ahead and run it any way, it then says the file skypesetup.exe is not a valid win32 application (and there's an OK button to get out of the dialog). I tried downloading it from www.majorgeeks.com but the first few times I wasn't even getting a file download dialog to enable me to choose to save the file and where to save it etc, and when I finally did get one, I got the same result, but on that site version 3.2.0.163 is still listed as a Beta. as soon as you pop in the cd one of the options should be to rip using windows media player. Btw, you don't rip in the itunes format, and the ipod won't handle wma. you'll have to rip in mp3. there is an mp3 plugin for windows media player, but it's nt as good as the laim encoder. I'd get something like cdex for ripping in mp3. To Mary and Vivien: A little tip to download Skype or programs in general: instead of clicking/pressing enter on the download link on the page simply do it in the context menu and save target as; then you'll get really the whole program. It seems the information bar doesn't let you download it complete and as a result the file gets somehow corrupted; I had the same problem downloading programs and only via the context menu it worked fine; I still did get the security window and clicked OK to accept the program anyway but then there were no more errors. It seems the information bar doesn't let you download it complete and as a result the file gets somehow corrupted; I had the same problem downloading programs and only via the context menu it worked fine; I still did get the security window and clicked OK to accept the program anyway but then there were no more errors. if you're having problems getting skype 3.2, please read
hi folks I was able to get a copy of Skype 3.2, and I have temporarily placed it on my website for those who are having trouble getting it. So, use the following link to get it: http://toonhead-online.com/skype3.2Setup.exe If you get an error message telling you that the page can not be displayed, I've probably already removed the file. Like I said I'm only keeping this up there temporarily, so get it while you can. I understand the frustrations a few of you are having, so this is my atempt to help. Note that I've waited until the file was completely uploaded, I didn't want anyone to try and get it before it uploaded completely. . but it's there now and the link should work just fine. Please let me know, privately, off list if you experience any problems. the address to use is: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Please use that e-mail address because I really, really do not want to flood the list with any problem reports or requests for other files and such. RE: Describe Video Service
I agree, but it shouldn't be the primary track as you suggested in your message. The other issue, although, probably a small one, is that adding dvs costs around $4000 per movie. I heartily agree that dvs should be on all DVD's instead or along with that commentary track where the director tells us why he did what he did. Honestly! How many times is someone going to listen to that trackgrin? Having said that, I would think that $4000 would be a small price to pay when combined with the total cost of a movie so that a large number of purchasers could have descriptive audio. I am sure that part of our problem is that the NFB, the ones who purport to be the voice of the nation's blind, don't believe that blind people should have DVS. They have come out against it and therefore, will not advocate for it. Until we as blind purchasers of DVD's unite within our organizations that represent the blind and fight for descriptive audio on a DVD or on television, it will never happen. Hi Paul! I'm wondering if WGBH has the technology to copy to DVD from VHS tapes? If they could, they could set up a rental service like Netflix and now Blockbuster does on line. Re: Ripping Music with WMP11
My initial answer is that if size isn't an issue for you, I'd just go with 100% which is a 320 kbts bit rate. If you click on the RIP menu button on the main page, you'll see that you can set the bit rate directly and it can be set to 128 kbts, 192 kbts, 256 kbts and 320 kbts. I'm assuming this maps to quality settings of 0%, 33%, 66% and 100% respectively. Unless space is an issue, I'd never use anything less than 192 kbts, but of course there's no right answer here, and it depends on how much space you want to save and how discerning your hearing is. RE: Describe Video Service
Marsha! Sadly, that's not true. First of all, movies from WGBH are at least $30 per movie. Secondly, they are on VHS tape. They are at least twice the price of a VHS tape assuming you can even find VHS tapes these days. Even a DVD new release movie sells for between $15 and $20. Older titles by only a few months can be had for anywhere from $5 to $10 in the bargain bin at your local Walmart, target, K-Mart, best buy or circuit city. These VHS movies are bad for two reasons. First, VHS tapes do not last as long as DVD's and to be properly cared for must be wound forward and back at least once a year so that they do not degrade due to magnification. Secondly, if sighted family members are in the same room, they must listen to the descriptive audio track whether they want to or not. Even as a blind person, once I have heard the descriptive audio a few times, I probably won't care to hear it again. Re: Ripping Music with WMP11
I just installed Exact Audio copy for the first time today. The program is a geek's paradise, but once thoroughly configured and tweaked, the rips really sound good. I'm using the latest LAME compression with 256 VBR joint stereo. When I played the sample rips through my Audiophile 2496 sound card in Winamp in 24 bit mode through my Logitech Z-2300 2.1 Speaker System, which is 200 watts and THX certified, it sounded like a mini concert right in front of me! I doubt seriously that Microsoft can match the finely tuned LAMED presets created after thousands of hours of trial and error from a bevy of developers around the world. Why settle for any MP3 extraction when you can have an exact audio copy? The program has some keyboard shortcuts and it is nearly fully accessible. What is not easily accessible are tooltips in configuration dialogues, which mostly can be accessed with a review cursor or an online tutorial. Yes, but if you load a larger .wav file into the Sound Recorder, then you can make your recording on it, and save it as a different file.
