Re: Flac File Question
Hi Dave, I just created a FLAC file to test this. I'm not sure what version of Winamp you're using but I'm using version 5.56 which is currently the latest version and it played the FLAC file without any problems. I didn't need to download a plug-in to play the file, as far as I know version 5.56 comes with a FLAC plug-in by default. Below are the version details of the FLAC plugin that comes with Winamp: Nullsoft FLAC Decoder Plugin 2.08 (c) 2007-2009 Nullsoft, Inc. Written by Ben Allison FLAC 1.2.1 I hope this helps. Thanks Steve. I'll have tu check things out as I have an older version of winamp on an old win-me box. I don't think windows-me will handle the latest winamp version so I'll have to look at other options for that legacy box. What's this crap. You didn't see me anywhere say it wasn't a better recorder. I think I only said that the Stream could already play unprotected wma, so I didn't think that was anything special about the Plextalk Pocket. Really I just wanted to know about the machine and wondered why something that other machines could do for quite some time. Now was special. If I really wanted to get argumentative and unpleasant I would have pointed out to him that a lot of people don't think that updates to the firmware is as good of a thing as he seems to think. Depends what those updates are though. I am quite aware of the fact that none of these recorders can record in wma . I don't think the xtreme had the capability in the beginning also. Now something completely different: I would be most curious to hear recording tests of the book sense. The same discussion is actually going on on a local list here in South Africa. I know neil Ewers did some very extensive tests with many of the other recorders with different microphones. Does anyone know whether such tests have been done with the sense? Re: Flac File Question
Hello, now I didn't know that Winamp now ships with a flac plug-in. I used the flac plug-in for Winamp that I had to download. Everything dealing with flac files, including how to decode them to .wav and how to encode .wav files to flac is contained at http://flac.sourceforge.net Since I'm not sure of your experience with flac files, this will give you a starting point. These are used in the trading of concert recordings, and now a few artists are offering the flac downloads as an alternative to the mp3s. Thanks a lot. Hi, think you're refering to the Sony PMCD50 which is exspensive and a pro level recorder with 24 bit depth recording and 96Khz sampling rate support. It will support pro mics but you have to buy a separate XLR interface if you want to use regular pro-style mics. so no, the Plextor wouldn't be on a par with that, but that's not to decry the virtues of the accessible Plextor recorder we're discussing. Automatic bookmark numbering. If you do not want to determine the number of a bookmark you are going to set, just press the Bookmark Key twice then press the Enter Key, so Pocket PTP1 will automatically give the smallest bookmark number you were not using. If you press the '0' Key and the Enter Key after you press the Bookmark Key twice, Pocket PTP1 will also give you the smallest number automatically. Changed the title/folder/category announcements. When you select a title after pressing the Title Key, Pocket PTP1 makes simple announcements than the previous versions. And when you want to select a folder by pressing the 'Up' Key following the Title Key, Pocket PTP1 announces the folder name. Play text files more naturally when going to the next line. Changed the order of the items in 'System Settings' of the Menu. 'Initialize all settings to default' has been moved to the last item. More Powerful Navigation Added two navigation levels for text playback; 'line' and 'screen'. 1) Forty words or 2) less than forty words before a carriage return have been defined as a 'line'. Forty lines has been defined as a 'screen'. Now you can navigate a text file by screen, paragraph, line, sentence, word or character., and a DAISY title by heading (level 1 to 6), group, page, phrase, screen, paragraph, line, sentence, word or character if such items are defined on the DAISY title. Added a DAISY-like level navigation feature for html files by recognizing H1 through H6 heading levels. Recording and Playing Feature Enhancement Improved the recording sound quality by MP3 for DAISY recording and voice memo. Added MP3 high-quality modes on 'Back-up' of music CD. After pressing the '9' Key to back up a music CD on a CD drive connected to Pocket PTP1, you can select 'MP3 256kbps high-quality' or 'MP3 128kbps high-quality' in addition to the previous modes, 'MP3 256kbps', 'MP3 128kbps' and 'PCM'. When you select either of the two modes, you can back up better sound quality music titles into a SD card. Please note that those modes need 20% to 90% more time to back up the music than the previous MP3 modes. Enhanced the compatibility with variety of MP3 formats. To announce decryption key information on the Menu. After you install a key to decrypt a PDTB title (for example, books from NLS or RFBD), you can check whether the key has been installed properly by hearing this announcement. Does anyone know what speech synthesizer is used in the Plextalk? I'm attracted to the recording ability of the plextalk, I know that the booksense uses neospeech and I'm not fond of the reading voices used by the Stream. I do have a Braille plus which I like a lot, but I would like a backup device, and I'm torn between the Booksense and the Plextalk at this point.
