The xtreme has been on the market much longer.

And I heard some recordings made by the xtreme. They're probably even worse
than that of the olympus.

2009-10-09 Thread Steve Pattison
Hi Dave,

I just created a FLAC file to test this. I'm not sure what version of
Winamp you're using but I'm using version 5.56 which is currently the
latest version and it played the FLAC file without any problems. I
didn't need to download a plug-in to play the file, as far as I know
version 5.56 comes with a FLAC plug-in by default. Below are the
version details of the FLAC plugin that comes with Winamp:

Nullsoft FLAC Decoder Plugin 2.08

Written by Ben Allison
FLAC 1.2.1

I hope this helps.

What's this crap. You didn't see me anywhere say it wasn't a better
recorder. I think I only said that the Stream could already play
unprotected wma, so I didn't think that was anything special about the
Plextalk Pocket. Really I just wanted to know about the machine and
wondered why something that other machines could do for quite some
time. Now was special. If I really wanted to get argumentative and
unpleasant I would have pointed out to him that a lot of people don't
think that updates to the firmware is as good of a thing as he seems
to think.

What's this crap. You didn't see me anywhere say it wasn't
a better recorder. I think I only said that the Stream could
already play unprotected wma, so I didn't think that was
anything special about the Plextalk Pocket. Really I just
wanted to know about the machine and wondered why something
that other machines could do for quite some time. Now was
special. If I really wanted to get argumentative and
unpleasant I would have pointed out to him that a lot of
people don't think that updates to the firmware is as good
of a thing as he seems to think.

Worth pointing out too that mic pre-amps from Fell Audio here in the UK will

Hi, think you're refering to the Sony PMCD50 which is exspensive and a pro
level recorder with 24 bit depth recording and 96Khz sampling rate support.
It will support pro mics but you have to buy a separate XLR interface if you
want to use regular pro-style mics. so no, the Plextor wouldn't be on a par
with that, but that's not to decry the virtues of the accessible Plextor
recorder we're discussing.

OK, this brings up the question is the Plextalk better than the Sony
(and I may have the wrong model number) pcd5m -- which I know is not as
accessible, but it looks like it does a great job of recording.

Bruce, that's very interesting re. recording level meters. that clinches it
for me as I do want something like a semi-pro accessible recorder with raw
 .wav recording.

Worth pointing out too that mic pre-amps from Fell Audio here in the UK will
make the recorder usable with balanced mics. Is it folks like Sound
Professionals in the US that do this sort of thing too?

with the newer firmware upgrade, the Plextalk pocket got just as good if not
better than the Victor stream. it is more responsive than before, and if you
have prepared books in the stream with the companion software, the Plextalk

not that i know
 of.
one thing i wonder though is why neil, never really does any microphone
tests with cheaper microphones that might be in one point and time in a
buddget range for someone who is starting out.
I have tried many microphones as well. and some of the more expensive ones
do sound good; but in some cases i found that some cheaper brands of
microphones that people might pass over cause of their small price of
between three dollars and ten dollars actually do a better job in some
respects of the more expensive ones.

Depends what those updates are though.

I am quite aware of the fact that none of these recorders can record in wma
. I don't think the xtreme had the capability in the beginning also.

Now something completely different: I would be most curious to hear
recording tests of the book sense. The same discussion is actually going
on on a local list here in South Africa. I know neil Ewers did some very
extensive tests with many of the other recorders with different microphones.
Does anyone know whether such tests have been done with the sense?

Thanx

What's this crap. You didn't see me anywhere say it wasn't a better
recorder. I think I only said that the Stream could already play
unprotected wma, so I didn't think that was anything special about the
Plextalk Pocket. Really I just wanted to know about the machine and
wondered why something that other machines could do for quite some time.
Now was special. If I really wanted to get argumentative and unpleasant I
would have pointed out to him that a lot of people don't think that updates
to the firmware is as good of a thing as he seems to think.

MP3
modes.
Enhanced the compatibility with variety of MP3 formats.

The plextalk have their own voice for reading most prompts, but the nuance
vocaliser voices such as Samantha and Tom for US and Daniel and Emmily for
the UK are used for reading text/doc files.

Does anyone know what speech synthesizer is used in the Plextalk? I'm
attracted to the recording ability of the plextalk, I know that the
booksense uses neospeech and I'm not fond of the reading voices used by the
Stream. I do have a Braille plus which I like a lot, but I would like a
backup device, and I'm torn between the Booksense and the Plextalk at this
point.
