try spraying some canned air in there first. you may just have a dirty lazor

Hi.
looking for advice.
my boom box has bit the dust.
thought it was my cds tha were dodgy.
well had this baby for almost 25 years, and handed down by my baby
brother.

now, the cd just started skipping and jumping.
but i knew the cd was good.
so i put one of my dads cds in, and it stutered, and would not play.
so the cd player has died.
not worth getting it replaced.
so, what ghetto blasters or boom boxes, have people purchased.
and some thing for a blind person easy to use.
does it just have a radio and a cd player.
so i can then listen to my cds.
with new models.
which models or brands, the good, bad and down right ugly.
want to get it right.
and will they play 80s minute blank cds.
stores do not sell 74 minute blank cds.
and from leading edge a spindle of 55 blank cdr cds tdk for $15.
if i go the rewriteable.
packs of 10 fo either $18 or $19 a pack.
which is the better way to go.
maybe just cdr.
as got over 800 tracks on my hard disk.
let me know if any one can help.
Marvin.

I'm using JFW 11 and WMP 11, and I can check and uncheck the files in the
list view to be ripped. I just use the space bar. The files are checked by
default. When I hit the space bar, it unchecks the file I was on and moves
to the next file. I can use the arrow keys to review what is and isn't
checked.

Yeh, use F4 to bring up the settings dialog and go over to the Remote CDDB
tab and configure the remote CDDB database you want to use. I'm not sure
what the default is, but I use the remote DB freedb.freedb.org, the protocol
of CDDB and a port of 8880.

Looks like you can use the "Query Sites" button and then just use the arrow
keys to pick the DB you want to use.

Right, first, make sure F4 -> Remote CDDB is filled out correctly. I use
freedb.freedb.org, which may be the default. I do have my email address
filled in.

Then use CDDB -> Read Remote freedb to fetch the tag information from the

I forget which exact menu it is in but it will say read from remote cddb. I
thhink it is. You select all the tracks go into the menus with alt key. Left
arrow a couple times. Look for the thing that says read from remote cddb and
hit enter. It should name all the tracks. To be on the safe side I usually
just select all tracks again and then hit f9 for rip to mp3 and you should
be good and going. I don't have it installed on this laptop right now which
is why I can't say which menu it is in exactly lol. Should not be hard to
find though.

First, before inserting the CD, start WMP and click on the Rip Menu button
and make sure "Rip CD Automatically when Inserted" is not checked.

Now insert your CD. If you need to, click on the Rip button in WMP. Tab down
to the list view. You should see all of the tracks for your CD and they
should all be checked. Uncheck the tracks you don't want copied and tab down
to the "Start Rip" button.

You should be able to find it in the library view and delete it. Another
thing you may want to consider is just deleting your WMP library and
starting from scratch. This won't delete your music and WMP will rescan your

Do you have the SRS Sandbox software, David? Some of the controls don't
work at all till you pay for and activate the full version. The trick to
moving those controls is locking down the left mouse button on the control

At least the free SRS WOW! plug-in in windows media player is totally

Bob,

I have the SRS program installed, and agree that the headphones sound is
enclosed, and lacks focus. There are some inaccessible controls where you
can alter the space etc, but as yet I haven't experimented with them.
What is really needed is something which goes between the sound card and
the

headphones, and has knobs on it so that you can alter things.

Hi,

I spend a lot of time listening to music through headphones, and have
tried
on many occasions to find a piece of software which psycho acoustically
creates a feeling of depth through headphones. I've looked at a couple,
but
none are particularly accessible. D

Does anyone on the list have experience of any hardware/software
solution

to
this problem.

Thanks,

David.

Okay..here's an update for ya: I've established that the CD in question is

What To Do When Windows Media Refuses To Rip A CD

2009-12-02 Thread Tom Kaufman
Hell again list: I've had this happen before..but figured it was because I had
ripped the CDs in question in another format. I completely deleted those
CDs..and it eventually ripped them to MP3s..like I wanted to! Now I have this
CD that I'm trying to rip (using WMP)..and it just refuses to do it; it at
first said it couldn't rip it because, it would be "No artist" (or some such
jazz)..and just kicked the CD out of the drive! Now then..when I try to rip,
it just kicks it out; how do I make it rip? As far as I can tell, there's not
another copy of this CD on my computer or on my external drive! What gives?
Thanks!

I have a possible solution. There is no guarantee this will work. It did
work for me but I wasn't expecting it. It might not work for your card as
it is newer and has different software. I hope it does have the basic tone
controls like mine has or this won't do you any good at all.

I think all the junk Creative installs gets in the way of basic Windows
software. Especially the Creative Surround mixer. I don't know what
program has the Entertainment mode but you don't want that either.

It's a bit of work.

First: You need to download the latest software from Creative. That is a
job. You just want the basic software and driver package. The web site can

automatically find your card but it might be better to choose manually the
software to download. You have to drill down several levels with combo
boxes. And, there are buttons that Jaws doesn't always see that you have to
find with the Jaws cursor.

Now: change your default sound card to the onboard sound device because you

might not get sound for a while.

Next. Make sure your screen reader is also using that default sound device.

OK: Uninstall all the creative software.
If your computer reboots, cancel the found new hardware wizard.

Now install the new package you downloaded. Make sure to do a custom
install. We want to make sure you do not install the Creative Surround
Mixer or any of the stupid helper programs. You basically want the drivers
and the Creative Console.

Be sure to read everything. Both on the we page for the downloads and when
installing the new software.

Fweew! It tires me out reading those instructions. Maybe just rip the
whole thing out.
Bob.

RE: soft synths

2009-12-02 Thread David Reynolds
Soft synths are fine, but quite fiddly. They generally come in the form of a
plugin, which is used as part of midi sequencing software like sonar or
cubase. That being the case, you generally get a picture of a synth with
knobs and sliders which you click. Stay tuned though, because there are
stand alone synths, and I have some links. My computer was stolen a few
weeks back, so you'll have to bear with me whilst I find them.

Hi guys,
Have you guys tried the software versions of the Prophit 5, Minimoog or
CS-80? How accessible are the software synths? I'm using window-eyes 7.11.
For a sighted user, the software synth recreates the front pannel of the
hardware synthesizer on the screen. You can twiddle with the knobs and
switches on the screen. So instead of paying thousands of dollars for an
older synth, for maybe $200 you can get a software version of that
synthesizer. I own a Minimoog model D synth and it sounds great, but if I
could have access to some software synths, that would open up a whole new
world for me. Just curious.

Bob,

I have the SRS program installed, and agree that the headphones sound is
enclosed, and lacks focus. There are some inaccessible controls where you
can alter the space etc, but as yet I haven't experimented with them.
What is really needed is something which goes between the sound card and the
headphones, and has knobs on it so that you can alter things.

The best I've been able to use is the SRS WOW! built in to Windows Media
Player. I find it works best on the large speakers setting. The headphone
setting sounds filtered and closed in to me.

SRS has Windows software but the demo wasn't to Jaws friendly. I believe
they also have hardware. A friend had a hardware unit some years ago. The
quality could have been better.

I previously had Stream FX for Winamp from Spatializer Audio but they appear

to have gone out of business.

All the other 3d audio plug-ins I've tried for WMP were not at all Jaws
friendly. Couldn't find a control anywhere with the Jaws cursor.

I am a nube but I see where there are 2 types of output these days ie...
Analog and Digital. The analog is for things like tape recorders and

be the problem. You could have it set to data also and that would cause many
