OK, so the Plextalk Pocket and the new Bookport Plus feel the same when held

the same pressable keys? I don't quite understand.

Re: DIGITAL TALKING BOOK PLAYER QUESTION

2010-03-13 Thread DJ DOCTOR P

Hello Kevin,
I have a San Disc 4 GB USB flash drive.
I created a folder that's called, audio+podcast.
I put mostly MP3 files in that folder.
But when I plug that flash drive in to the player, it plays one of the audio
files for a wile.

But then, it stops and gives me a cartridge error message.
But when I plug my wife's MP3 player in to it, the machine plays the files
off of it without any problems.
My question is, why does it act like that with my Sand Disc USB flash drive
and not my wife's MP3 player?

Hi John.

The player will play 3gp, wav and mp3 files. I'm thinking of those three
right off, I may be forgetting one, though. These files need to be in a
folder called audio+podcasts which is on the root of the drive. You can
put

subfolders under this to organize them. The player won't announce the
folders, but when you're in bookshelf mode you'll be able to navigate to
them.

As for playing files in stereo, this may or may not be true. I say this,
because earlier firmware updates to the player didn't play files in
stereo.

You need to have version 2.1 or later of the firmware, and it will play
files in stereo. To find out your player's version, with no media in it,
press the sleep button ten times quickly until you hear the serial number
being announced. Once this announcement starts, just wait, and you'll
hear

the version of your player's firmware announced. My player has version
2.1.3 of the firmware on it.

To download NLS books for your player, you need to be signed up with the
NLS

site. To do this, go to

https://nlsbard.loc.gov

and click on the link on that page. Since you have an NLS player, you'll
be

able to get this service. It's nice to download books from the site, and
anything you get on a cartridge from your library will be on the NLS site.

By the way, you may want to call your local library and tell them you want
digital books on cartridge sent to you. I had to do this for myself, and
in

fact I had to call them again to jolt things into action. I should be
getting my first NLS book from my library any day now.

There is an email list that is specificly set up for the NLS player. You
can find out how to subscribe to it, as well as have some of your
questions

answered. Go to

Hi John.

I'm guessing here, but the San Disc drive may not be totally compatible with
the NLS player. People have reported problems with this brand of drive. I
tried hooking up an SD reader to my player, and it sort of worked. I was
able to play part of an NLS book, but then the player would say I had
reached the end of it. I didn't get a cartridge error, though.

People have reported good results with the Kingston brand of flash drive,
and I purchased a LEXAR 4 gig drive that works fine with the player. Keep
in mind, however, that the player is mainly designed to work with the
cartridges designed for it. You can get blank 2 gig cartridges from

These are more expensive than flash drives, and they don't hold as much.
I've decided to use them, because I know they work with the NLS player, and
they fit into the front of it with little effort.

RE: DIGITAL TALKING BOOK PLAYER QUESTION

2010-03-13 Thread Kevin Minor
Hi John.

First, you can put music onto the blank cartridges. They are essentially
flash drives with a fancy case around them to fit into the NLS player, so
anything you can put onto a flash drive, you can put on the cartridge.
APH sells the cartridges for $11.95, if I remember correctly. You can order
one by going to

http://www.aph.org

The site says they will be selling the cable to hook to your computer, but I
didn't need the cable, since I already had one for my PC. The cartridge
doesn't require a special cable for it. Most extension USB cables will work
with the cartridge. The cartridge has a standard USB plug on it that plugs
into the NLS player, so if you have one of those handy, you can hook the
cartridge to your computer and transfer files to it. If you don't have this
cable, you can order it when you get your cartridge. There are other places
where you can get the blank cartridges, as well as the cable for it. To get
a list of these places, go to

http://bardtalk.com

flash drives with a fancy case around them to fit into the NLS player, so
anything you can put onto a flash drive, you can put on the cartridge.
APH sells the cartridges for $11.95, if I remember correctly. You can
order

one by going to

http://www.aph.org

The site says they will be selling the cable to hook to your computer, but
I

didn't need the cable, since I already had one for my PC. The cartridge
doesn't require a special cable for it. Most extension USB cables will
work
with the cartridge. The cartridge has a standard USB plug on it that
plugs

into the NLS player, so if you have one of those handy, you can hook the
cartridge to your computer and transfer files to it. If you don't have
this
cable, you can order it when you get your cartridge. There are other
places
where you can get the blank cartridges, as well as the cable for it. To
get

a list of these places, go to

http://bardtalk.com

and click on the FAQ link.

If you have more questions, let me know.

You

 Hi John.

I'm guessing here, but the San Disc drive may not be totally
compatible with the NLS player. People have reported problems with

 I
tried hooking up an SD reader to my player, and it sort of worked. I
was able to play part of an NLS book, but then the player would say I

People have reported good results with the Kingston brand of flash

player. Keep in mind, however, that the player is mainly designed to
work with the cartridges designed for it. You can get blank 2 gig
 cartridges from

These are more expensive than flash drives, and they don't hold as much.
I've decided to use them, because I know they work with the NLS

I wouldn't assume that APH or any reseller catering to the blind is
going to sell something for less than a general public can buy
something. A quick search with Google showed me places where I could get
a USB extension cable for $.69, $1.99 and $2.29, just to name a few.
That being said, if I were to buy a blank NLS cartridge, and I didn't
already have a USB extension cable (note that I already have a few just
lying around because they came free with different MP3 players, USB
sticks and so on) then I would just go ahead and order one from APH the
same time I ordered the NLS cartridge. This would be for convenience
though and not because the APH is able to sell these cheaper than a
mainstream electronics supply store. Remember they're selling a 2G flash
drive for $12.75, all be it in a special form factor for the NLS DTBM.

Hi John.

Currently, 2 gig is the biggest size available. I agree that this isn't
very big, but remember that the player was mainly designed to play NLS
books. A 2 gig cartridge will hold something like 180 hours of content.
That's not a lot of books, but it isn't terrible. I've heard that the
design of things was to make it possible to put a 4 gig cartridge in the
player, and people have had larger flash drives work on the player. With
this in mind, maybe the cartridges will be bigger in the future.

Hi John.

The player will play 3gp, wav and mp3 files. I'm thinking of those
three
right off, I may be forgetting one, though. These files need to be in
a
folder called audio+podcasts which is on the root of the drive. You
can put

subfolders under this to organize them. The player won't announce the
folders, but when you're in bookshelf mode you'll be able to navigate
to

them.

As for playing files in stereo, this may or may not be true. I say
this,
because earlier firmware updates to the player didn't play files in
stereo.

You need to have version 2.1 or later of the firmware, and it will play
files in stereo. To find out your player's version, with no media in
it,
press the sleep button ten times quickly until you hear the serial
number
being announced. Once this announcement starts, just wait, and you'll
hear

the version of your player's firmware announced. My player has version
2.1.3 of the firmware on it.

To download NLS books for your player, you need to be signed up with
the NLS

site. To do this, go to

https://nlsbard.loc.gov

and click on the link on that page. Since you have an NLS player,
you'll be
able to get this service. It's nice to download books from the site,
and
anything you get on a cartridge from your library will be on the NLS
site.

By the way, you may want to call your local library and tell them you
want
digital books on cartridge sent to you. I had to do this for myself,
and in

fact I had to call them again to jolt things into action. I should be
getting my first NLS book from my library any day now.

There is an email list that is specificly set up for the NLS player.

One thing I noticed today. I added a book from bard to my mp3 player. It had
no problems finding the book. It ignored the other folders on the player.
When I connected another player with just mp3 files it would then see the

This is indeed true according to the documentation, but I've had my DTBM
play MP3's that were not in the Audio+Podcasts directory. I found this out
when I plugged in the same flash stick into my DTBM that I was using to
transfer files to my netbook, and I couldn't tell where it was getting

Hello List members,
I just received a new digital talking book player in the mail.
I have a few questions about it.
For starters, this machine can play files from a USB flash drive.
What kind of format will those files need to be in an order for

this machine to play them?

I haven't tried this yet, but can this thing play in stereo?
It has a monaural speaker built in to it.
But I'm asking about its headphone jack.
I have seen some digital playback equipment that had mono

speakers built in to them before.

But when you plug a pare of headphones in to them, the sound came

out in stereo.

Is this digital talking book player one of those machines that

can do this?

Thinks in advance.
My best regards.
 John.

Hi.

The cable that connects the cartridge to the computer can be purchased at
your local computer store. You just need to buy an extension USB cable.

Hello Kevin,
I have a San Disc 4 GB USB flash drive.
I created a folder that's called, audio+podcast.
I put mostly MP3 files in that folder.
But when I plug that flash drive in to the player, it plays one of the
audio files for a wile.
But then, it stops and gives me a cartridge error message.
But when I plug my wife's MP3 player in to it, the machine plays the
files off of it without any problems.
My question is, why does it act like that with my Sand Disc USB flash
drive and not my wife's MP3 player?

Hi John.

The player will play 3gp, wav and mp3 files. I'm thinking of those

three

right off, I may be forgetting one, though. These files need to be in

a

folder called audio+podcasts which is on the root of the drive. You

can

put
subfolders under this to organize them.
