Hi. The subject line says it all. Can anyone recommend a head set mic that
actually has good full range audio. I find most of them just don't have
much bottom end and are to crisp in the top end. I used to have a labteck
that sounded better than some $50 mikes that I got for $6 but the cord
broke. I'm more interested in the mic part of the head set as I listen
through my speakers and don't plug the head phones side in. Thanks. Joe.
PS. If you have one that you think is good, I would be interested in a
sample recording. Thanks again.

2010-05-04 Thread Jerry Howell

Hi John,

You may be correct, but from the BARD site there are no four digit versions.
They all have three digits. You mension below that you have 2.1.0.3. so I am
not sure what you had.

when I got my player it was version 2.0.3. This didn't have the book shelf
feature.

The BARD site says it started in version 2.1.0 If you did have atleast 2.1
something, and didn't have the bookshelf feature, then it is a very strange
thing.

So if this is true about what you say about the latest version having the

Why did I have to download it and install it on my NLS player.

Hello all,

Let me put my two cents in on the subject of NLS players.

I have had mine since October or November and have used it extensively,
but am no techy expert.

first, if the player is working correctly, the only way I believe it
could tgo from 15 hours to one would be if you forgot to turn off the
book or fell asleep while not using the sleep timer. The player will
play until the book is finished if you don't use the sleep timer. This
could be many hours.

Secondly, on the BARD home page there is a link to check on the newest

each version. The bookshelf feature was programmed in to the latest

2010-05-04 Thread Jerry Howell

Hi Tom,

If the player is actually on, but the play button hasn't been pressed, there
may be a problem with the unit if it doesn't shut off after 30 minutes when
it is on battery power.

I really have to watch it though, because since the book starts if a
cartridge is in and the on button is pressed, If I think I am turning the
unit off when it is actually already off, I may be turning it on and
starting a book that may go on for hours. I may do this if I take my ear
phones out before pressing buttons and don't hear what the player is doing.

2010-05-04 Thread DJ DOCTOR P

High Chris,
I think I know what Tom is getting at here.
Some how, he is getting in inaccurate reading of his battery life or the
kind of charge he has left in it after a time.
If the player isn't playing a book, then it's suppose to turn itself off
after a half-hour.

But Tom's player doesn't do that.
I spoke to a Mr. Dave Bond via email at the Bard Talk website about this
problem.

He says, that maybe the battery checks are messed up.
He suggested that Tom calls his cooperating library and ask them to send hem
a replacement NLS player.
But to me, it sounds like something is wrong with the program or if you
will, the firmware that's on that particular machine.

Maybe the firmware needs to be uninstalled and reinstalled.
But there isn't anything that suggest how to go about doing that to one of
these players.
Tom, if you're reading this, you may wish to call your library and tell them
about the problem you're experiencing with your player.

Maybe they mite have a suggestion for you on what you can do about it.
My best regards.
 John.

2010-05-04 Thread Christopher Chaltain
Interesting, but the file you're referring to is just the latest firmware
for the NLS player, which is currently version 2.1.3. It isn't any special
bookshelf software. Since you said you were already at the latest level of
firmware, I wonder what was going on with your player. I wonder if somehow
the previous upgrade to 2.1.3 didn't fully take but did update the announce
of the FW level. Maybe upgrading again got it to take. Oh well, the bottom
line is that you got it working, and we'll never know what the original
problem was.

the right touch on that button! As for the Firmware..I've checked
that out..and it is 2.1.3; is this the latest one?

Re: Looking For Some Information Concerning NLS Player

2010-05-04 Thread Christopher Chaltain
Ah, OK. I understand. It wasn't my intention to challenge your personal
experience. My experience agreed with the web site, namely I had the
latest FW on my player, and I didn't need to do anything special to
access the bookshelf mode on my player. I'm curious, what special
bookshelf firmware did you have to install? I've only ever seen the
firmware listed on the NLS site.

There is no special book shelf firmware, and if you'd had the latest
version of the firmware, you shouldn't have had to do anything.
Here's what it says at the BARD Talk FAQ at
http://www.bardtalk.com/faq.php:

4. How can I access the player's bookshelf feature and why is this
not mentioned in the built-in user guide?
Answer: The bookshelf feature was added with firmware version 2.1.0
and the built-in user guide has not been updated to discuss this
feature. First, make
sure your player's firmware is version 2.1.0 or higher using the
method discussed in FAQ 5. To access the bookshelf, hold down the
Play key until the player
announces "Bookshelf" and the number of books on your media and the
current book number selected. To move to another book, use the
Forward and Rewind keys
on the standard player and the Next and Previous keys on the advanced
player. When located at the desired book, press Play to start reading.

when I first started playing mp3 files they played but every now and then
the player would announce "cartridge error". It doesn't any more since I
moved them all to the audio+podcasts folder.

Hello Robert,
Just curious but why do your mp3 and other audio files have to be in a
folder that's named audio+podcasts?
I'm asking this question because on one cartridge, I have a folder that is
entitled, music.
I have subfolders with the different types of music such as jazz rock pop
oldies and so on.
On another cartridge, I have all of my NLS books in individual folders
that bares their names.

I don't have any problems playing my audio files and or my NLS books.

Place all of your mp3 files in a folder named
audio+podcasts
then they will play. Be sure to also place your BARD books in their own
folders for the sake of organization.

I read that my zen stone would work when plugged into my nls player. I
get a cartridge error when I try to use it. Am I doing something wrong?
Will it work with bard and mp3's? Will it play my music files also?
Thanks Ike

need sound card recommendations

2010-05-04 Thread Betsy
Hello,

I am in the market for a new internal sound card and would greatly appreciate
any recommendations or thoughts on what not to buy.
I don't need anything too fancy, but want to get the best for my money and need
to keep it around $75 if possible. I am running Jaws10 with XP.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Fwd: on Innovations this Week Tyros, Low-Cost OCR Packages and Winamp

2010-05-04 Thread Steve Pattison
 From:Chrissie Cochrane chris...@theglobalvoice.info
 To: what...@theglobalvoice.info

Once again, another tuesday, time for another Innovations, at 17:00 UTC, 1
pm Eastern, 10 am Pacific.

On this week's program, we hear from Jorgen Hansson who tells us Tyros 3
users how to import .wav files onto the instrument's hard disk.

We then hear once again from Michael Lauff of Serotalk about three
relatively inexpensive scanning and reading packages.

Finally in my discourse on Winamp, I look at the playlist editor.

That's Innovations, at 17:00 UTC on the one and only Global Voice, the most
interactive station on the internet.
