Re: Thinking seriously on an Imac rather than a new Windows 10
Hi Joe. I'm hoping that my transition will also be seemless, but to be honest with you, I'm not all that bothered or flustered about thewhole change over. Firstly, I'm setting up my load of Windows 7 computers in another room which I'll use for e-mail, recording and burning projects etc, to make some space for my new project. I'll keep this equipment up and running as I learn all about my new imac set-up. As for my new Imac, I'll not be in a position to make the purchase until 17 April, so I've a few weeks to go. I've already contacted a charity organisation in Glasgow, who will be able to give me hands on training, free of charge, starting next Monday and all Monday's afterwords. The Mac Store in Glasgow are also agreeing to at least an hours practicle support in their shop before you make the purchase. and I've a few friends who know a little about the Mac. In addition, I've also got the internet to support me, during this training transition. So to all extent and purposes, my new system will be sitting in my study and all my old equipment will be stored in another location. So I'll have a blank room with my Imac Retina in it and will probably spend a couple of hours a day, getting to know and understand how it works. My expectation is that eventually, I'll ditch all of my Windows equipment and simply go Apple all the way. I'm 62 years old so not going to be all that bothered about wasting time trying to learn something new. Hope I'm not sounding overly optimistic Joe, but I really believe the time is right for me to give it a big go for Apple. Very best wishes. I hope you don't, but depending on what you want to do, you might. Nothing like choice anyways. Apple's prices are far far too high. Products are good, but screw the customer. After sales is second to none, and if you get a good individual in the store then you could be home and dry. My experience running up to mac os10, was, that there were issues, different issues to windows based pcs, but issues just the same. And I was so glad I didn't spend full retail price on my first and last mac. Lots of excellent support though, some really knowledgeable guys and girls out there. Good luck, and enjoy your purchase. Is it possible for an administrator to be able to tell if you are recording a stream as apposed to simply listening to the stream on a program like Winamp, or any other player for that matter? The problem I am having is even after setting a scheduled session for recording a particular program, TR will record for a few minutes, maybe 20 or 30, and though the recording is continuing, at least it appears that way, the audio simply stops being input to the potential recorded product. I have set the program up to reconnect to the stream in an unlimited fashion, but this simply does no good, I still rarely get a complete recording, at least not for the past few weeks. This is a recent Phenomena. I have been making weekly recordings of this program for many years, and have never experienced anything quite like this. If anybody could please give me any insight into just what might be taking place here, it would really be greatly appreciated. It really has me pulling what is left of my hair completely out! Sure hope to hear from someone soon, this is maddening! Larry

Re: Hardware recording...
Hi John. Around November last year I took the plunge and bought a portable didgital recorder of extraduanery quality, called the Zoom H6. In the UK this cost me about £370.00. I didn't tell my wife just how expensive it was, haha. As far as accessability is concerned, it's not too good but I have listened to all Mr. Neal Ewars, a well known blind sound engineer from the US, podcasts on the machine. It is aparently the best such device anywhere on the planet and yes, a blind person can easily record sound at 24 bit sterio. I'm currently recording a local band in Kilcreggan, who meet every Wednesday night. I use Goldwave to edit my recording and Nero to burn onto disk. I must tell you that the quality of the recordings I make blow the minds of my friends. They think that I must really know my stuff as the recordings are as good as you'll get in a recording studio. I'm loving this attention! I'm thinking of helping my small community magazine to make their monthly paper accessable to blind people, by recording it and posting it on memory sticks to people in my community who cannot read print. So, for a portable recording studio, which you can hold in your hand that gives you the best sound quality possible in the world, please consider the Zoom H6. All the very best. I'm thinking that within my gmail account, there must be a file that holds all of my blocked items list. Does anyone know if I go into gmail account/settings, I can revert back to unblocking everything and start a fresh? Any advise would be very welcome. Very best wishes. Andy.
Block senders list
Hi all. I think that I've blocked an important list to my block senders list and no longer enjoy any messages from that particular list. I use a gmail account and my question is if I blocked a particular list rather than a member is this information held on my computer or gmail account. If the latter, is there any way that I can reset and unblock everyone and start again? Thanks for any advise you may have. Very best wishes. Andy.

Hi again Hamit. Yes I did listen to Neil's demo on the LS100 and indeed I was torn as to whither to buy that model or the Zoom. I think that I eventually went with the Zoom after Neil did a mic comparison, under the same studio conditions and it appeared to me that the Zoom just came ahead. Now that I've got it, I regret a little not going for the Olympus as talking menus are almost essential for blind users. But many of the menu functions don't really need to be changed much. I suppose if I was to use the microphone capsules one day then Phantom power through one or two of the XLR's, the next day, then I'd need to be able to turn Phantom power off and on. Now if Zoom and Olympus got together, well then we would all be happy until the next new development. I must say the function for fixing the upper sound level on theLS100 sounds very attractive and along with talking menus, then it must be a fine device indeed. Very best wishes. Zoom H6 Handy Recorder
Hi all. I've just purchased the Zoom H6 Handy Recorder so I can do a bit of podcasting and recording of local bands and events. The Zoom has no speech and I'm just about total, but I know that Mr Neil Ewars for one, has this device and can use it without too much difficulty. Re: 24 bit recording
Hi again Hamit. You were right again my friend. I tried another, pretty old computer that I had stored away and burned all of the 12 tracks onto a single disk and it worked fine. So, it's my other computer that has let me down. Need to get it re-formatted or replaced for sure. By the way, it's Nero Burning Rom vs 8.3 that I use and it works, so no need to upgrade to an all singing all dancing version. Thanks again for all of your suggestions. Incidentally, earlier on you said that you would love to be able to afford a H6! I live in Scotland, don't know about you, probably the States, but anyway, in London you can hire the H6 for about £100 per day, so if you are in the States, then you may be able to locate a similar hire service over there. There must be one, giving all the thousands of DSLR enthusiasts and pro's. Thanks again. Very best wishes. Also almost time for a new PC. Unless you built it or want to put a new burner in it. Maybe for you 96 24 bit may not make much sence after all. I just do know though that your final product would be better since it started out as HD. Were I to get 1 of these or the LS 100s I'd set it to 96 24 bit. But then again, I'm an HD audio guy, I'm a Blu-Ray disk guy, different needs. I love HD audio. The Zoom F8 will do 192 KHZ at 24 bit like the 700 recorders from Sound Devices.
Re: 24 bit recording
Hi again Hamit. Because it worked for you, I tried again to burn the single file on a CD and again it did not work. So I copied a Meatloaf album from my collection of CD's and attempted to burn that. It did not work, so it's looking like there is another problem, probably with this computer, which is about 8 years old. I'm going to try tomorrow and burn it on my wife's computer, so fingers crossed. Incidentally, I looked at the Properties of the file and it was 40.5 mb. A standard track I have from a group called Enya is only 7.6 mb, so you were right right at the start anyway Hamit, you would not get many of these files on a blank CD in any case. I'm thinking of setting the H6 to MP3, 16 bit at 44 Khz on my next recording session. I feel that as I like to give CD's away to friends, there is no point in recording at 24 bit, 96 Khz as WAV. Incidentally, I checked out Nero.com to see their latest version of Nero. It's called, Nero 2016 Platinum - and it's £99.00 to buy, but the system requirements are probably to modering for my computer. Is this the version you have and will JAWS work well on it. I'm total. Re: Sound quality on PC
Hi Hamit. Super epic right enough if you could manage to juggle all the complexities in such a project, particularly with a visual impairment. But I suppose if one had the motivation, then why not. For me, managing the X Y module was difficult enough, haha. I was actually about to purchase an Olympus device, which Neil Ewers also tested and recommended. What that device had something like a limiter, wherein you could ask your subject to be as loud as he can be and the device prevents you accidentally going above that level. That would be a good function on the H6 as it's really quite difficult through headphones when you are beginning to exceed a good volume level. One thing that I wish the H6 had was a method of preventing the volume knobs being accidentally turned. Perhaps a stiff click motion to the switch so that the volume could only be adjusted deliberately. Also, I know it sounds quite crass, but an automatic function, wherein, once you have attached all your mic's and even a line in, the device does the rest for you, taking out the floor noise as well as limiting the session. Well finally, there is a vast difference between the older H4n and the H6. Just wait for the H7 or H8 and perhaps it will prove impossible to make a poor recording. Very best wishes. I just meantion Rick because of your question mainly dealing with Nero. OH how did I record the 24 bit files I burned to CD you ask? Well fun fact for anyone with an Olympus recorder, even the DM 420 which only did MP3 and WMA had a dirty little secrit. That was that it's a 24 bit sound card. So if in the USB type menue you set it to compisit and set it as your defalt recording device, now you can record in 96 KHZ 24 bit PCM WAV in stereo. What I'd love to try with a Zoom H6 like you now have and Neal Ewers has, is set it as the defalt recording device, hook 4 mikes to the back, get the front part with 2 XLRs and hook 2 more mikes then in SF Pro or I guess apparently now Gold wive will do this set it 2 5.1 channal surround and wala a surround sound recording. This is why the sadly way expensive Zoom F8 kind of interests me. With that if this idea worked you could even do 7.1 surround sound. Re: Sound quality on PC
Hi again Hamit. That's a good idea. Below is a single track, which was part of my recording session last Wednesday. It's a local band practice. During recording they monitored through headphones and were astonished with the quality of what they were hearing. I used the stereo X Y capsule with the wooly mic screan. A sighted friend kindly set up the recording volume to just below 12 db. In all the session lasted 3 hours and either because one of them stopped the recording to listen, or the device starts a new file after an hour, I ended up with 4 files. I copied them from the device via the usb and listened to them on Winamp. Although they were clear, the volume was very low. So I edited each in Goldwave Doubling the volume twice for each file. There was no compression or limiter on. So here is the file for you to have some fun with. Sendspace link: https://www.sendspace.com/file/0ovgbz Very best wishes. If on the PC than that's odd because apparently your pc can indeed handle 24 bit if you could edit the file. Here's another idea just for grins and giggles. Find the file. Then, just play it with Windows Media Player. If it chipmunks or doesn't work then it's the PC this maybe a question for Rick Harmon of the blind-geek-zone. He would know more. I'm not sure. Hi Stephen. No, I'm playing JAWS through my original computer sound card and speakers, and all my audio media comes through the new external sound card. This is quite handy as I can listen to music whilst doing something else on the computer. Andy - Original Message - From: "Stephen Guerra" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "'PC audio discussion list. Hi Stephen. I've got an AV unit in the room next door which has satellite television on it. The Engineer has plugged in 2 Optical cables for me. One for audio out and one for audio in. I was hoping to play music and audio described movies from my computer through the wall to the av unit. I was also wanting to record on my computer, using GoldWave, AD movies that may be showing on the TV. Unfortunately, the sound card I purchased only has an optic out and a line in. USB Sound Card Recommendation
Hi all. I'm looking for a recommendation of an external sound card. I'm looking for an external sound card that can connect to my AV unit and record from it using an Optical in socket. I'm also needing an Optical out socket, so as to play files from my computer to my hi-fi. So it's important that it has both Optical in and Optical out facilities. In addition, and probably the most important, it should be accessible by screen readers, such as JAWS. At present, I have a Creative SoundBlaster, Live, 24 bit external sound card. Unfortunately, although this does have an Optical out, it only has a line in facility. Any advise very welcomed. Best wishes. Re: Creative Soundblaster 24 bitExternalSoundcardUsingtheOpticalConnection
Hi Keith. Not really sure if you are being supportive orsarcastic mate. The reason why I'm surprised that I have not resolved this problem via the PC Audio list is because, this list is probably the best source of support for computing based audio systems, that I know of, and if I cannot get help from this list, then I'm not really likely to get it at all. In any case, what is this list for if not to assist other blind and visually impaired computer/audio enthusiasts? Okay, I can drop a message to the manufacturer, but what do they know about visual impairment and access technology? Best wishes. Re: Creative Soundblaster 24 bit ExternalSoundcardUsingtheOpticalConnection
Hi Sunshine. Yes, I've done that for line-in to my sound card and was able to make reasonable recordings. However, my Soundblaster does not have a line-out, other than Optical that I can use, in order to play audio from my computer to my hi-fi. Also, the distance is about 5 meters and that is quite a cable length. The Optic connection would I believe, give me much higher quality and I've got a couple of very long cables. The problem I have is that the Optical connection on the Soundblaster serves as both optical in and out, though changing this is I believe, quite difficult for a partially sighted person. Thanks. Hi again Steve. Which amp do you have? I'm thinking of getting a new amp for another room and it must have an optical in or in/out, so I can transfer AD movies from my computer into the system in the second room. I've been asking around and I believe that only very expensive amps have optical connections, but I'd love it if you where to prove me wrong. Thanks again. Best wishes. Re: Creative Soundblaster 24 bit External Soundcard Using theOpticalConnection
Hi Steve and happy new year. I've already tried plugging the plug in and it's quite simple. Like yourself, I am hoping to take the cable through a wall to an AV unit. However, I also want the Optic Connection to work as an input, as I believe it can, in order to record AD soundtracks from SKY, into my computer. I have a leaflet for the card, but this would involve bothering Pauline. I was hoping that perhaps another member on this and the PC Audio list could assist me by talking me through the method of swapping the optic from in, to out. Thanks. Best wishes. AV questions
Hi all. I recently purchased an Arcam AV unit with Quad Lite speaker system. In addition I purchased a 42 inch Plasma TV and a Pioneer DVD Recorder/Player. Unfortunately, despite paying a further £150 for installation, the engineers who visited were unable to set it up correctly for me. I'm currently fighting with them to return to my home and do the job right. However, I am also thinking of another solution, and that is, to split the system up. If I take my TV and DVD Recorder/Player out of the equation, for the meantime, I can use the AV as a standard Hi-fi. So now to my question. The Quad speaker system is 5.1 and I have 2 Satellite Speakers, 2 Rear Satellite Speakers, A central Speaker and a Sub. Can I still use the system without the Sub and rear speakers attached, giving me Left, Right and Centre. I need to demolish the room the system is currently in and set something up for music for about six months or so. Any advise would be very much appreciated. Best wishes. Re: Logging onto computer problem
Hi Chris. Yes, when I go into Documents and Settings, I've got the following: Administrator. All Users Default User, and Owner. However, it gets a bit more complicated than that. Prior to going into Documents and Settings, after I've clicked on Local Disk C, I've got the following: Documents and Settings. Logue. My Downloads. Windows, and Programmes. Logue is my second name, so I'm not sure if the account I am using is Logue, Owner or Default User. However all the stuff in my Start Menu is only found within the Administrator Account. Does any of this make sense to you? I really should not have to Log On at boot up if I am the only user and I don't think that I need all of these accounts. What do you think? Best wishes. Creative Soundblaster Optic connection help
Hi all. I am purchasing an Optic Fibre cable and intend to run this from my AV unit in one room, through the wall, and into my Creative Soundblaster external 24 bit sound card. Re: Audio DVD
Hi David. I normally back-up my mp3 files onto DVD Disks, using Easy CD Creator. Can't say exactly, but I get about 14 albums onto one DVD. Not sure about WAV, as I mainly deal with MP3's, but perhaps someone more experienced will advise you about this. Incidentally, making a back up of all your stuff within My Documents onto a DVD is quite a good idea, as it saves having all those CD's. Best wishes. External Sound Cards
Hi all. My knowledge and experience of sound cards is limited to internal cards which I have had on my last few computers. So please excuse this question if it sounds a bit daft. Are there sound cards available which can replace my 75 watt per channel hi-fi and 20 inch speakers? Or are sound cards limited to a lower spec? I'm asking because I need to upgrade both my computer and my hi-fi shortly and I was thinking of combining both, but only if I can get really good quality high wattage sound. Any advise would be very welcomed. Best wishes. Re: Windows Media Center version accessing
Hi again Norma. Sorry for taking this long in replying. Unfortunately, within the UK, we cannot get the TV on a Media Centre as yet. So all I'd be using it for is listening to my music collection. Given that these devices are very quiet, then this would be an improvement. I think I can plug in an analogue Ariel but this limits me to about five channels. I wish the UK would catch up on the USA as I'd love to be able to do the things you are able to do over there at present. Best wishes. Andy - Original Message - From: "Norma A. Windows Media Center version accessing
Hi all. I'm thinking of upgrading from my Windows XP Home edition computer to a Windows XP Media Centre edition. I appreciate that I will have to upgrade from JAWS 6.0 to JAWS PRO 7 or 8. There are a few demonstrations of just how accessible the Media Centre is on the Blind Cool Tec site at: http://www.blindcooltech.com/ These demonstrations were created by Larry Skutchan. However, Larry was using WindowEyes rather than JAWS. So finally to my question. Are there any Media Centre users over there in the USA, who are using JAWS to access it. If so, I'd really appreciate some advise before making such a large purchase. Best wishes. Hi Gang: Has anyone been able to script JAWS so that one can audibly travel around a GoldWave work space via the cursor keys and the PageUp-PaGeDown keys as one can in SoundForge? This is one of the great weaknesses in GoldWave. I have tried to use the same scripting process used in Soundforge with relation to the GoldWave "View to End" option; however, the GoldWave program itself does not respond well to this scripting technique. Hi Rusty. Be careful mate! I bought a second hand one from a list which deals with second hand equipment, and was told that the range was very good. I was hoping to read my mail from the garden but could hardly get further than my study doorway. I paid £35. I think that if you wish something to get out of the house, you will have to pay a lot lot more. Good luck though, perhaps you can let us know how you get on. Best wishes. splitting a large wave file into smaller files using GoldWave
Hi Sunsparkle, Larry and anyone who is interested in this topic. To split a single file which contains multiple tracks into individual files using Goldwave. 1. Open the file you wish to split and if necessary, save it immediately as a WAV file. 2. Press F4 to start listening to the file. 3. When you have reached the point were you wish to split, press F7 to pause, then do a Control Q, to drop a q point at that point. NOTE: If you overshoot the point were you wish to cut, press F5 to rewind back. NOTE. If you wish to slow down the speed of rewind, do the following. 1. Press F11 and TAB until you hear "Fast/Rewind Speed, Rewind. This will be followed by numbers. Change these temporary to 0.10. This will significantly slow down the rewind speed. Press OK. Continue dropping q points until you have reached the end of the file. 4. Press AltE F and arrow up once to Q Points and press Enter. Select Split File from the list of options. 5. You will be prompted for a location to send the individual files to, so complete this and press Enter. All you need do now if necessary is convert the files back to mp3 individually by opening each file and changing the Save As option. Alternatively, there is a Batch process in Goldwave which can convert whole directories of files from one format to another. If anyone would like to know how to do this, please let me know. Hi Larry. I've been messing about with GoldWave for a few months and as it happens, I'm getting reasonably good at splitting long mp3 files. If you wish I can talk you through it, but first, can you tell me which version of GoldWaveyou are using and whither you have downloaded the scripts for GW and JAWS? Best wishes. Re: Wav-files and others in winamp.
Hi there Anders. I had a similar difficulty and was advised to highlight the particular file in Windows Explorer then do a Shift plus F10. A menue will appear and the first option is "Play in Winamp". Once you have done this once, that particular type of file will automatically play in Winamp. If you have a problem, please get back to me and I'll ask my brother about it. Good luck. Best wishes. Re: Need help rearranging files
Hi Frank. You say that your books which you have on your computer are now listed out of the order in which you had them in prior to doing a system restore. Am I right in thinking that you had your books in a sub directory of My Documents? And that they are still there but not in the order you prefer? >From the desk-top, you press the Windows Key and the letter E, this will run Windows Explorer. Make your way through the tree-view of directories until you come to My Documents or the directory in which you have stored your books. Once you are at the top of the list of files, in your case, your books, hold down the Alt Key and press the letter V. Now arrow down until you hit "Arrange Icons by". This will bring up a list of options These options enable you to list your books either by Name Size Type or Modified. Play about with any of these and see if you can get your list of books back in the order in which you had them. Re: accessible program for records and cassettes
Hi Tessa. Your friend should consider GoldWave. This is a digital editing program which enables people like your friend to copy all his music collection, CD's, Tapes and Vinyl into his computer. A demonstration of GoldWave can be downloaded from: http://www.goldwave.com/ and scripts for JAWS and GoldWave can be downloaded free from: http://jbauer.no-ip.org/ There is also a very good list for GoldWave users were your friend can get advice and support. I believe that GoldWave costs about £25. Another popular program is Sound Forge but this costs about £200. Here is what John Wilson has to say about Goldwave: For its price, GoldWave has an impressive array of audio creating, converting, special effects and editing features for digital music, analogue music and speech input. It can take digital audio from your CD drives and convert this to more than a dozen alternative formats such as WAV and compressed MP3, WMA and OGG Vorbis formats. It is also able to remaster and fix crackles, his and clicks on music and other sound files you record into it from external sources, such as from vinyl LPs, music cassettes, the radio and other sound sources fed into it via the jack plug on your sound card. As part of its standard installation it provides normalising and noise reduction Best wishes. Re: SONIC STAGE sony software
Hi Hank. I actually swapped my Sony MD for the Denon DMD 1000 Minidisk Recorder / Player on the Recycle it list last year. The machine is very good and easy to use. I use it to copy music from MD disks into my computer. I've not yet attempted copying from my computer, but I'm sure this would be easy stuff. The details I have on the machine are as follows:- Some specs on the Denon: Two optical in terminals (which is great for recording, you don't need to adjust recording levels), one optical out. One coaxial digital in and one pair of analog in and out's. Denon's Advanced Super Linear Converter, a high accuracy D/A conversion system for maximum low Resolution and the widest dynamic range. ASLC provides superb transparency and precise delineation of low level musical information. The DMD-1000 uses a 64-times over sampling, enhanced Dual-bit Delta Sigma 20-bit A/D converter that improves dynamic range compared to the conventional 16 bit A/D converters used in other digital recorders for maximum signal to noise ratio immediately.Another nice feature is the pitch control and fantastic editing capabilities for you musicians out there. Re: MP3 players
Hi Hank. If you visit the ACB Radio's Main Menu site at http://www.acbradio.org/mainmenu.html and click on the link for 8 October 2003, the last item on the show is a review on the iriver IHP-100 hard disk based MP3 player by Michael Lang. Alternatively, you can visit the ACB Radio's FTP site at ftp://ftp.acbradio.org/ and download the particular clip. The code for the show is mmm1565. I really fancied the machine, but at the end of his show Michael advised us of the new machine which you have purchased. I wonder if Michael is considering a Review of this? Best wishes. Re: MP3 players
Hi Peter. Have you listened to Michael Lang's piece on this machines predecessor at the ACB Radio#'s Main Menu? I was considering purchasing the new 20gb machine, but was not convinced that I could navigate my way through hundreds of albums. Do you need to remember the alphabetical order in which albums are stored, and how about external microphone quality,? Is it good enough to record bird song? Finally, the best price I saw for it was £240. One more question, if you don't mind, would you say that it was a better machine than the Archos 20 GB recorder? I ask because there is a lot of chatter on this machine at the moment, with respect to navigation directories. Best wishes. Re: SONIC STAGE sony software
Hi Shannon. I'm afraid that I may be of little assistance to you on this one, but I had great difficulty accessing that software with jaws. Incidentally, I was not aware of it at the time, but the software only allows you to copy from your computer to your md. Apparently, Sony are quite sensitive about copyright. I ended up swapping my Sony MD for a desk-top MD and now copy from the machine into my computer by using the line-in connection. I find that GoldWave is very accessible for my work on such files.
