Re: Audacity 2.2.0 has been released

2017-11-03 Thread Donald L. Roberts
I have a related question. I note that there is a full install version and a
portable version of Audacity. I have noted that many programs have both a
full install and a portable version. So I conclude that there must be some
advantage of the full install over the portable version of a program. If
this is correct, just what is the advantage specifically in the case of
Audacity?

For a summary of new features see:
http://manual.audacityteam.org/man/new_features_in_this_release.html

One of the new features is that clips are now accessible for users of
screen readers.

For Windows users, these are the direct links for Audacity 2.2.0:
1. The Installer version:
https://www.fosshub.com/Audacity.html/audacity-win-2.2.0.exe
2. The portable version:
https://www.fosshub.com/Audacity.html/audacity-win-2.2.0.zip

I've updated by Jaws guide to Audacity for version 2.2.0, and it's
available here:
http://vip.chowo.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/jaws/Audacity-2.2.0-Guide.html

As previously, nearly all of this guide is also applicable to users of
NVDA

and Window-Eyes.

Unfortunately, there is not a version of Audacity 2.2.0 which is usefully
accessible with VoiceOver on Macs. The most recent accessible version on
Macs is still the screen reader version of Audacity 2.1.1:
https://www.fosshub.com/Audacity.html/audacity-macosx-ub-2.1.1-screen-reader.dmg

have my Samsung Galaxy S6 with “OK Google” and “Google Now” installed and the

For example I can tell the phone to “Play Radio 1070 KNX with Tunein” to which
Google responds, “Playing KNX 1070 News Radio” and that you then hear.
To stop playing all I have to do is to wake up google , “Ok Google” and say,
“Stop Play”, to which Google Responds, “Sure!”.
I have Google do a whole heap of other things besides, I just mentioned this example

it doesn't have a built-in speaker but it does. The sound quality is much like
an old-fashioned transistor radio but I have listened to music from a random
playlist in the background from amazon Prime and it is okay for casual radio
listening. I can also tell it to connect via Bluetooth to my iPhone and play my
book from the Voice Dream app via the Dot. It certainly sounds fine and can
play at a reasonable volume for the equivalent of a transistor radio.

If I should be fortunate to get the bigger Echo for Xmas I'll keep it in the
living room and move the Dot to the bedroom. That way I can use it to control
the heating and lighting from either place by voice and it will serve as an
alarm clock as well. Incidentally, it also tells Jokes and Interesting Facts on
demand. In fact it is quite a good dictionary and calculator too.

now its been fully aligned and you can hear the results for yourself.
Unfortunately weather conditions around the country - as you’ll hear - are a

fantastic job at reception overall.
What makes the RF2200 unique is the rotating ferrite AM antenna on the top so
you can nut out other stations in the background to an extent.
The RF2200 has very finely tuned circuits which make the radio hotter than a fire
cracker when it comes to AM reception, very reasonable on short wave and okay on FM
though not as good as many of today’s modern-Day FM radio sets though that’s to be
expected given most now use DSP technology which certainly wasn’t around 40 years ago
.
The sample was made using the microphones of the Olympus DM4 and you may notice
a little echo since the Olympus recorder was some distance away from the radio
to avoid any additional interference being added to the sample.

some sort of a built in automatic gain control which did not just
increase or decrease the volume at a fixed rate. It was extremely well
suited to voice recordings whose volume level fluctuated widely.

I too have a Goldwave question. However, this question pertains to

Also, can anyone tell me whether it is possible using batch mode to trim

Guidelines.

PC-audio is a list for the discussion of any PC audio related topic
such as PC audio software like sound editors, audio players and audio
formats; and hardware like sound cards, CD and DVD devices and so on.

While the subject matter is wide ranging, this is not a forum for the
discussion of non-pc-audio matters. There are many other lists for
political or other discussions.

There are also some PC audio related topics which are specifically
excluded from the allowable topics. The explicitly prohibited topics
include:

* requests for songs or other audio files * promotion of audio streams
except for occasional announcements of special events * advertising
audio products and service Willfully posting an off-topic message is
strictly prohibited. While it may be considered that one or two
messages that are off topic can't hurt, if everyone on a large list
like this took that approach, we would quickly descend into chaos.
Asking for replies to be sent privately makes no difference.

Some examples of off-topic messages include:

* Virus alerts * Jokes and humor * Advertising items for sale * Test
messages * Non-audio software and hardware

Vulgar language, name calling and other types of flames are strictly
prohibited.

Sometimes a message thread starts with a clearly defined purpose, but
as the discussion develops the subject matter can change. If this
happens, you should take the initiative and change the subject line to
better reflect the subject matter of the thread.

Some people pay by time or volume when they use the Internet. For this
reason, please take care when quoting messages that you're replying
to.

Ideally, keep just enough of the previous message to remind
subscribers about the message to which you're replying, and no more.
Otherwise, one quickly finds a few lines of new text at the beginning
of a message followed by screen after screen of old messages.

If you believe that any of these rules are not being followed, do not
raise this as an issue on the list. Write to the group owner at
pc-audio-ow...@pc-audio.org and express your concern. If you raise
these matters on the group itself, it will generate considerable
off-topic traffic and bad feeling. There is only one moderator. Please
do not post messages asking that a thread stop or accusing someone on
the list of being off topic.

The moderator of the list has the right to remove or restrict anyone
from being able to post to the group as a result of not adhering to
the stated rules.

If you disagree with any of these rules, please unsubscribe now by
sending a message to pc-audio-unsubscr...@pc-audio.org If you do not
unsubscribe, this is taken as an acceptance by you that you will abide
by the rules as outlined.

2015-04-28 Thread Donald L. Roberts
That has not been my experience with AnyDVD 7.5.8.0. When you look for
AnyDVD in the system tray and open it up, there are two options of
interest. One is to copy to hard drive, and the other is to create an
Iso image. I do not have to use Clone DVD at all.

On 4/27/2015 8:44 PM, Robert Nelson wrote:

Any DVD is quite accessible but it depends what you want to do.

Any DVD only allows you to overcome the DRM on DVDs and BlueRay disks.

You would then play the DVD or BlueRay using Media Player Home Cinema or
VLC.

If you want to copy a DVD or BlueRay, you would use the companion program of
Any DVD which is called Clone DVD and it, too, is quite accessible (even if
the interface takes a little experimenting to get used to it). It will, for
example, allow you to pick and choose between the titles on a disk so you
get only the English version rather than the German version.

The programs do cost a small amount of money but they are updated on a
regular basis and I think they are well worth it.

Go to www.slysoft.com for more information.

Why is it called Slysoft? It is not quite what you might think, they are
located in Slygo in Ireland.

Hope this helps,

Re: SiriusXM online

2015-03-12 Thread Donald L. Roberts
I just wanted to comment that this site works reasonably well also with
Window-eyes 9.1 and Internet Explorer 11. One thing which I found
amusing is that there must be a huge buffer somewhere because initially
the song which played was the song indicated. However, somehow my
screen display was always one and sometimes two songs ahead of the
recording which I heard through my sound card.

I do wish there were a way to go directly to the desired channel rather
than having to go through the categories to find what you want. I
especially hope that something can be figured out before the start of
the major league baseball season.

must have an on-line account to be able to listen to the channels on-line.
Once you have logged in, you will see the new player. Granted this is a
beta version, and it may be a little clunky. It has been for me. Across
the top of the page, you have several options that are all clickable. They
are not links, but if you use your arrow keys, you can still click on them
by pressing enter. You have, search, channels, recent, me, favorites etc.
When you select channels, then the page refreshes. If you scroll down, you
will see the list of categories. Let's say you want to listen to music.
Find where JAWS reads Music clickable, and press enter. When you do this,
scroll down, and you see the different types of music categories, like pop,
rock, country etc. Select the category you want, and then press enter. The
list of channels under that category pops up. Just scroll to the one you
want to listen to, and press enter. Now if you want to change channels, go
to the channel clickable option and click it. Then repeat the process
above. Hope this helps!

I have the Bose sound wave system purchased a number of years ago. I am
sure some folks will take offense at what I am about to say, and it is
not my intent to offend anyone.

My problem with any of the Bose radios which I have seen is that there
is no such thing as controls for equalization. It has also been my

something which goes boom, boom, boom. Few highs, mostly midrange and

to be something only a 16 year old in a Honda Civic has any interest in.
There is mid-range though and I think it would sound great for the average
Gregorian chant. Also be wary that room size and placement of sthese radios
is critical and there is no automated room correction built in.

I use my Pen Friend for marking my CDS. No braille is shallow enough to play
in any computer or CD player that I have found.

Vicki, Are you familiar with the CD stomper? It is a device which comes
with square CD labels which are perforated in such a way that you can put
them in a Perkins or a slate to write the braille and then remove the
corners via the perforations leaving a circular label which is exactly the
size of a CD. You then place the CD on a circular platform after first
placing the adhesive side of the label face up. You then just press the top
side of the CD against the adhesive, and you have a thin but very legible
braille label on your CD. I used this thing for years and have never had
the adhesive cause an issue. I do agree with your note that adhesives at
least some of them will cause problems.
If you want more info about the CD stomper, just let me know.

probably an even better answer built right into Windows itself which I assume

The answer of course is Windows Media Player which - when I last tried it - was

I didn’t follow the conversation at the time so perhaps someone else on list

First, whenever I play an Audio CD, Winamp wants to look up the CD on a
database. Many of my CDs are home brew, so I do not want Winamp to
commence a database search. How do I squelch it?

Second, I need to change one of the plug ins so that the up and down
arrow keys control Winamp's volume. Is that an output plug in? If so,
which one do I use?

Thanks.

Wireless speaker info needed

2014-10-06 Thread Donald L. Roberts
I'm inquiring about info for a typical stereo speaker setup for wireless
speakers, stated another way, no surround sound. If one doesn't want to
serenade the people in the next house or apartment, do wireless speakers
have sufficient amplification and tone quality to produce good high
fidelity? Also, how far can the signal be picked up from the
transmitter? Lastly, what kind of money are we talking about in U.S.
dollars?

Recommendations please!

Real tech sound cards

2014-08-27 Thread Donald L. Roberts
The only sound cards I have ever used in windows based PCs are
integrated sound cards, and I believe that Real tech is the only brand I
have ever had.

It may be necessary for me to purchase a new windows desktop PC running
windows 8.1. I seem to recall posts from a year or two ago stating that
the quality of integrated sound cards, Real Tech in particular, was
deteriorating. So I am posting this to inquire about what to look for
and what to avoid in an integrated sound card.

I am not about to spend the kind of money that some on this list have
spent for hi end cards, so I would hope that this discussion will be
limited to integrated sound cards. In the past, what I have done is to
use the integrated card for the music and the USB sound card for the
screen reader. I am aware of course that this is the reverse of how
hi-end card owners configure their PC.

Thanks in advance for any pointers.

Tools for playlist creation

2014-08-01 Thread Donald L. Roberts
Please tell me about the easiest way to create audio playlists. I know
that I can do it in Winamp, but I don't remember how to do it. I think

Total recorder, accelerated recording

2014-08-01 Thread Donald L. Roberts
Earlier versions of Total Recorder contained a feature called
accelerated recording. This allowed the user to play a recording on a
media player such as Winamp at a surprisingly fast speed, contingent on
the PC's processor speed, and re-record that file using Total Recorder.

Is that feature still available, and how does one use it? I doubt that
I can use it on a Windows 7 system but think I can use it on an old XP
system if the feature is still available in the current incarnation of
Total Recorder.

Some may be asking why not just use something like Switch to convert the
file. The answer is that the files in question are DRM protected.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Toslink connector question

2014-07-18 Thread Donald L. Roberts
This question pertains to the toslink connector on my Apple TV box. Is
the signal which comes from the Apple TV's toslink connector a digital
signal or an analog signal? If digital, then I need to convert it to
analog as my receiver is quite old and has no digital inputs, only RCA
analog inputs. I do realize that I could listen to the television set's
audio, but I do not choose to do so as my TV has the dubious distinction
of producing the tinniest audio I have ever heard. Thanks.

Don Roberts

Re: Toslink connector question

2014-07-18 Thread Donald L. Roberts
The toslink connector is the small rather square indentation immediately
to the left of the HDMI connector if the box is oriented so that the
connectors are facing you. I realize that that is the back of the box,
but when messing with the connections, I turn the box so that the
connectors are facing me.

There are a number of ways to get analog output from your Apple TV. If your TV
is connected using the HDMI cable,
it is also decoding the audio. Even though the TV's sound is not good, it may
have audio outputs that could go to
your stereo receiver.

There are also converters that will convert a digital optical output signal to
an analog signal. Using one of
these will also work.

There are also converters that will convert an HDMI output to analog video and
audio. This would degrade your
picture, though, but the audio is pretty good. I am using one of these since
my TV and receiver are old.

Steve Jacobson

I am using an older version of Burnaware Free as the latest is
completely inaccessible.

When one has loaded all the files into Burnaware and is ready to burn,
when tabbing through the various combo boxes, there is a check box which
gives no indication of its purpose. The screen reader merely says
checked or unchecked, contingent on its status. So just what is this
check box for? I have not done much testing, but I find no change

Re: Digital audio question

2014-04-07 Thread Donald L. Roberts
Thanks to both Gary and to Dane for answering my question. I apparently
did not verbalize correctly. What I am trying to find out is what
digital format I need to use for the inputs. In other words, instead of
connecting the input device to the mini disc via analog connection, I
want to use the digital input mode so that the beginning and end of
track markers will be put in automatically. When transferring pop stuff
to mini disc, the markers work reasonably well. But when attempting to
transfer classical music, because of the quiet passages, sometimes extra
start markers are inserted.

Again, thanks for responding.

XM Roady 2 questions

2014-02-18 Thread Donald L. Roberts
I bought an XM Roady 2 in approximately 2009 and used it for a couple of

The problem is that I don't have a manual and cannot recall how to make

learned how to decrease the volume and restore factory defaults. But I
am still attempting to find the keystrokes for changing the FM transmit

Dictation products for Windows 7 PCS

I am running Window-eyes 8.4 on a Windows 7 64-bit desktop. Thus far,
I have not ventured into the area of message dictation except on my
iPhone. But now I would like to get something to use on this windows
PC.

Can anyone on list provide opinions preferably from first hand
knowledge regarding the latest version of Dragon Dictate and or the
dictation facility built into Windows 7. When referring to Dragon, I
am referring to the lower priced of the two Dragon options, not the
one which allows one to dictate PC commands. Earlier versions of
Dragon required the person doing the dictation to train the program to
get used to the sound and inflection of your voice. Is this still the
case?

Additionally, I know that Jaws users could purchase the very expensive
J say scripts for Dragon, but I doubt there is anything comparable for
Window-eyes. I would like responses from Jaws users also. Remember,
this is for text dictation only, not for issuing PC commands. Thanks
in advance.

Re: Christmas Presents

2013-12-26 Thread Donald L. Roberts
I got it, Dane, and love it, except for one relatively minor irritant.
Specifically, I dislike the mechanism which mutes the audio for half a
second while tuning. I can live with it but wish I could disable it.

One other thing I wanted to mention is that because it runs on 4 D
cells, it appears that one should use brand new D cells since cells
which aren't fully charged don't power the unit nearly as well as
partially used D cells in my super radio 3. Of course, the super radio
3 uses analog tuning which is also a factor.

Also, if anyone is interested, C. Crane has an audio tutorial produced
by Tim Hendel who does a great job of describing all features and
functions of this radio. It was actually done for the CC2 but which is
still applicable for the enhanced radio. If anyone wants it, I will put
it up on Dropbox for download.

I think one of the members here talked about his Wife giving him this excellent

I can tell you that the quality control of these radios is absolutely first

I know someone who ordered one of these radio sets quite some time ago, he has
one for his study and he ordered a second last week for his kitchen, the order
came on Christmas Eve and - although the colours of the radio units are

So to a feature which I didn't know about, you can align the CC II/E which
means the radio can adjust itself to the signal conditions its under to both
minimise interference and to optimise signal reception for any part of the AM
Broadcast band.

Turning the radio to the AM Broadcast band and then holding the clock/frequency
display toggle button down for 5 seconds causes the radio to beep, when the
radio beeps you release the button.

The radio starts scanning down the dial step by step until it reaches the lower
limit of the AM band.

Whilst the radio is stepping you'll hear the radio adjusting its RF gain etc
for each step it moves to.

Note that alignment for each station you set in each preset is stored alongside
that station so if you do a factory reset of the radio, not only are the
presets erased but all the alignment information is wiped too.

turntables

2013-08-27 Thread Donald L. Roberts
I am wondering whether anyone on list can recommend a turntable which
will play 78 RPM records. Not crazy about USB because of the problems
that some folks have had. I have some old 78s saved since childhood
which I would enjoy playing, so I don't want to sink much money into it.
I do have a preamp which has the appropriate equalization settings for a
magnetic cartridge, but I will be lucky to find anything as I am sure
that most low cost turntables will have ceramic cartridges and probably
will be USB.

So I would appreciate ideas.

Re: Sangean WFR-28 Internet Radio Again

2013-07-29 Thread Donald L. Roberts
Although I certainly enjoy reading Dane's reviews of various radios, I
just have to comment that my iPhones are great as internet radios.
Granted, they need external amplification and speakers unless you are
willing to listen through phones, but it is so easy to connect the
iPhone either via blue tooth or via the 3.5 mm. jack to other components.

All of the internet radios I hear about have accessibility issues, some
more than others. As I see it, the shortest distance between two points
is a straight line, and for me the iPhone represents that straight line.

You may need sighted assistance for this, you go into the Help menu of
the radio and obtain the access code from there.

I initially thought that the Access code might be the Mac address of
the radio which can be gotten from your Rooter but this didn't work.

The access code is 7 characters long.

If I find another way of getting the code then I'll let the list know.

The levels are given in percentages, but tabbing to the text box and

Regardless of which screen reader you use, is anyone on this list able
to read reliably the Goldwave V U meter. I am using version 5.67 but
cannot figure out how to read the meter with either Window-eyes or with
Jaws. I am not using scripts for either screen reader for Goldwave. So
if you are able to read the V U meter, please tell me which screen
reader you use, whether you are using some sort of script, and the
specific key presses to read the V U meter.

One more question if I may. In the tools menue, what difference does it

Re: Accessibility of Adobe Audition

2013-02-09 Thread Donald L. Roberts
I do not claim to be knowledgeable regarding noise reduction. However,
most of the time I have dealt with old recordings which have been
subjected to noise reduction software, there are almost no highs
whatsoever. I am thinking of a lot of big band and vocal recordings
made on 78s during the 30s and 40s, and yes I know that the modulating
frequencies were seldom more than 5000 cycles. But I have heard a
number of those recordings on the original vinyl and later heard those
same recordings after going through noise reduction procedures, and the
resulting sound is so bland that I would much prefer the originals,
complete with hiss and a few pops.

As stated earlier, I haven't played with this stuff much, so I am not
bashing. I am just suggesting that good sound is an extremely
subjective thing.

auto noise capture in sound forge is great, and
then the trick is to get it to lower the defaults
to more than one of the saved configurations to more than 12.5 DB.
You can totally get rid of cassette noise, for
example, at about -40 DB or so, any more than
that and it starts to make the typical NR swishy
sounds which are not desirable.

Hi Sam,

My view might be a little subjective but from what I've tried out in the
past when I got myself Adobe Audition just to take a look at it got
totally
worse than e.g. 2.1 version of Adobe Audition when you know they changed
their label from Cool Edit which was the predecessor of that one. I
wasn't
confortable with that as many objects were placed without any
shortcut keys
on the screen beyond the menu so OK it was possible to grab them
using the
virtual mouse and crowling around but it was a real pain. It has the
standard menu from what I remember and maybe they improved some
particular
things of that I can't tell but generally the older version were
incredible
having most of things in menu reachable via the keyboard unlike the
latest
versions. But maybe somebody knowing more of that will chime in. I
say the
most blind-friendly one is Sound Forge:).

For the record I don't think it'll be better with Window Eyes as the
universal way of the layout and localizing the object is identical to
all
screen readers regardless of whether it's NVDA Jaws or Window Eyes etc.

Re: iHeart radio windows app

2012-11-15 Thread Donald L. Roberts
All of this discussion regarding Tapin radio prompts me to inquire as to
whether Radio Sure is gone. At any rate, nothing happens on my system
when I launch Radio Sure, so I suspect that it is no longer viable.

Hi all,

Thank you guys for your responses I really do appreciate it:).

A: Cumulus streams got switched to Streamtheworld company from what I know
because we had hundreds of reports of failed Cumulus streams and all working
flawlessly in Streamtheworld format so I did the trick with our database
through PSPad text editor using regular strings finding
(mms://live.cumulusstreaming.com/)(\w\w\w\w)-(AM|FM)
replacing with
http://provisioning\.streamtheworld\.com/pls/$2$3\.pls

and it's working great now.

B: Every week it's important to update the database in menu - file - update
station listing so all changes made are fresh.

C: The shortcut keys list is available under F1 key where you can arrow up/down.

D: I'm afraid there's no any audio presentation yet, however, if anybody
decides to embark on making the audio presentation for blind or wider community
we offer the license key for free afterwards. I've personally made the
presentation in Czech language only but I don't dare speaking English that long
as my spoken official formal English isn't that excellent though:). Coward huh?
:D

E: OK we also store many big band stations just type
big band
in the search field. I really love All Brass Band Radio out of Indiana (USA)
but there are big band stations from RadioIO network, Gotradio, Calmradio and
who likes jazz and its variety and colors there's jazzradio.com network which
has countless of jazz kinds of music from piano through guitar to saxophone
about 30 channels. I'm done with conservatory and my major was piano so it's a
huge inspiration to me:). Also Calmradio nework mentioned above has so many
fascinating channels from composers themselves Telemann, Mozart, Bach
Stravinski etc. through possitivity, spa, healing sleep etc. to e.g. celo flute
or gregorian channels, all can be written in the search field and shift+tab to
go to the search results. It's a must-have for classical or jazz connoisseurs:).

All networks are alphabetically ordered under Search menu button just after the
search field when tabbing once. Hit enter on the button in main window and
arrowing up/down you'll get the information needed, it's a standard threeview
display.

F: And yes the direct download link for TR is
http://www.tapinradio.com/downloads/tapinradio_setup.exe

Have a nice day

Actually, I think my problem was that I had an outdated version of Tapin
Radio on my Pc, and until this morning, I hadn't tried either Cumulous
or Clear Channel because of my inability to get them previously. That's
why I am grateful to Vitek for mentioning Cumulous and Clear Channel
availability on Tapin Radio. I have used iHeart radio on my iPhone for
Cumulous and clear channel, and I had used iTunes on the iPhone for
   everything else.

I think that Cumulus stations also work in Tapin; I have WMAL in
Washington, D.c. which seems to tbe working fine. I have had a problem
with one station timing out (this would be WSM) but MR. Oldaker was kind
enough to send me a direct link which works for that and helped me get
around that problem too!

Subject: iHeart radio windows app

Very special thanks to Vitek for the info he provided regarding putting
iHeart stations into Tapin radio. I am embarrassed to say that I read
his message first thing this morning, and its content did not sink in
until I read Sunshine's subsequent message. Therefore, thanks much to
both parties. Below is the info which was especially helpful.

you can tune into all stations from Iheartradio.com
using Tapin-radio product by simply typing the call letters or their
moniker
in the search field in the main window available there using e ¨shortcut
key just like browser's edit fields. By shift+tab you land on the search
results and hitting enter will play the station or arrowing up/down you can
choose the station if there are more of them.
We store all almost 800 stations from that website using special stream
URLs
because they can't be sniffed on the website for them using rmtp protocol.
A direct link for the product
