Re: An Audio Decision That Requires Some Thought
Yeah Chris, I hear ya. I do my voice recordings with Sound Recorder, and my other recordings with RecAllPro, and then edit with GoldWave. I usually don't use all the features of any software, just the ones I find that work particularly well for me. I'd rather have 1,000 dedicated programs, than 10 multi-function ones. Hi Jamie, Sounds like you have pretty much made your decision. You felt SoundForge was a resource hog, and probably more program than you need. And Studio Recorder is not the only sound editor one will ever need, so, it sounds like you're are left with GoldWave. The price is right, and it is probably as much sound editor as you will ever need, unless you plan to do some really specialized professional recordings. - Original Message - From: "Jamie Pauls" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: Sent: Friday, September 23, 2005 11:08 AM Subject: An Audio Decision That Requires Some Thought > When it was first released, I purchased Sound Forge 6 with noise reduction > and Jim Snowbarger's scripts. Hi Scott, As long as the wav file in question doesn't exceed 76mb, you can use sound recorder. You will have to do the editing manually, because there are no time markers that can be set. Re: questions about music download services
Hi Susan, I can only comment on the Walmart service, since it is the only one of the two you mentioned that I have used. The last time I was there, their selections were available in wma format, and had to be played with windows media player, which has to be at least version9. When you purchase, you are actually purchasing a license for each track, which at the time was 99 cents each, for most single tracks. Either you can't burn them to cd with Nero, or any other burner, or I just didn't have a wma plug in for Nero. At any rate, there is very detailed imformation on the Walmart website. I am looking at the imusic download service but am skeptical about getting into it without more information. Firstly, can anyone tell me what software is involved in listening to and burning the files? I would like to be able to burn the tracks I have downloaded to CD using Nero, is this possible? Also, how is the overall selection? I would probably be looking for country, folk, classical, and classic rock/oldies for the most part, and am hoping to find a good selection and not just little-known independent artists, which of course is impossible to determine without signing up. My other question has to do with the Walmart downloads. I appreciate the fact that you can browse their site and more or less listen to the tracks before downloading. However, I have never tried burning any other format to Nero except for wav or MP3 and was not sure this is possible. If it is not possible, I guess I'd have to record the files to .wav or .mp3 and would be concerned about loss of quality. I am, of course, assuming that there are no problems with hidden fees, legality and accessibility issues, unwanted spyware etc., so would want to know if I've overlooked something. Would like to hear the pros and cons of getting involved with either of these from those of you who have been there. All thoughts and advice much appreciated. Danielle, If you go to the control panel, and multi media, do you have your soundcard set as the preferred device? And there is a chebox for use only preferred device. Tom, You are correct the name is RecAll pro It all depends on how the screen reader pronounces it. Good program, I use it everyday, costs about $30. Re: nero or cd burning question
Hi Tom, CDRW's, should be used for data disks only. For burning audio disks, use CDR's. Several factors come into play here, if you want an audio disk to play on other devices other than your computer, it should be burnt as an audio disk, the format is CDA. This format will play on most CD audio devices, and some DVD players, if the player supports that particular format. Likewise, if you want to make an audio disk, with mp3's on it, this can be done by simply burning a data disk, using a CDR. This type of disk will also play in other audio devices, as long as the device supports that format. No matter what type of disk you are burning, you should always select the slowest speed avbailavle, make sure all other applications are shut down before starting the burn process. The reason for this, is because the burn process is processor intensive, no matter what your processor speed is. Computer activities, can be a little quirky at times, so you want to create the best possible environment for creating CD's. As I mentioned in a previous response to another question, you should do a little testing to find out what brand of disk gives you the best consistent results. I don't mind spendingmore on good quality disks, because it is cheaper than throwing away a lot of poor quality disks. But I just had something happen that's..well..kind of along this same line; a friend of mine burned a CD for me..one that he had bought. It won't play on my CD player that is hooked to my stereo receiver; for that matter..it doesn't seem to want to play in the CD player in the bomb box! After checking this out..I discovered that the CD he used is a CDRW! Does this account for why it didn't burn correctly? The CD will play on my computer..but doesn't seem to want to play on my other CD players. I have also heard that..how slow..or how fast..you burn a CD can have a baring on whether a CD will play on a conventional CD player. Insidently..the CD player I have back here is an old Sony that I got for Christmas in either 90 or 91. I'm told that this can make a difference. Is this correct? Hi Danielle, Total recorder will also record from other audio sources as well the internet. You can also record streaming audio, using most other recorders, although Total recorder handles this function in a different manner. Hi Charles, You can e-mail the mp3 file as an attachment. If you are using Outlook Express, 1. open Outlook Express 2. go thru the process as you would for sending mail 3. press, alt I, for file attachment. 4. press enter, and then browse for the folder where the mp3 file is that you want to send. 5. arrow to the file name, then tab to the attach button, and press enter. Now when you send your message, the file will go along with it. Note, this is just a copy of the file, the original stays on the hard drive. Re: nero or cd burning question
Hi Mimi, and Marty, Best to stick with name brand media, and burn at the slowest speed for best results. Here is something interesting ,I found out. Some burners work best with certain media, and sometimes, the manufacturer of the burner will say which brands. Although this is more the exception than the rule. Here is what I have done to get the right cd's. I started out buying 5 packs of cd's until I hit on one that gave good results with my burner. Fortunately, I only had to buy 2 different ones, and ended up with Memorex. There is a website which has more imformation about cd's, but I can't remember the name, however, you can get to it from the following website. www.hereonthe.net hth, Richard Justice - Original Message - From: "mimi" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "PC audio discussion list. " <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Sunday, November 28, 2004 12:33 AM Subject: Re: nero or cd burning question Marty, I have had CD's not play properly and had to reburn the mp3 music on a ifferent brand disc which works better. The cheaper the disc, you lose data on the cheaper ones after some time. There is no setting I can find in Nero that will fix this. When I disc does not burn successfully, or completely, what happens is you have some dead tracks, and the dead disc is referred to in my circle as a "coaster." You can either use it as a coaster or throw it away. Some brands are much better than others at holding our data. I'd stick with Imation from Office Max or Regata from Radio Shack. Something that is a more reliable brand and will work every time. The cheaper the disc, well, it's like buying the cheapest cassette, and you know what happens there: bad quality sound and tapes very uneven in recording. Also, I have Nero set to play a trumpet sound when a disc is burned successfuly; a dragon when it is not. When the dragon sounds, I just throw the disc out, because I know there is nothing I can do to fix it. You burn CDR's once. Rewriteable discs, you can burn for a limited amount of time. Some CDRW discs I bought, I found some bad ones in the pack, as well. There is no way for a blind person to tell when a bad one's coming up until it is burned. Yes, it's annoying! The other thing I had to do is slow my burner speed down. 52x is too fast for my processor. When I talked to someone at Radio Shack about this, that's when they told me this. I thought that could be the trouble, but had to have someone else confirm it. Radio Shack sells computers, too. I guess you did not know this. Also, if you are ever in the market for a new computer in the future, why not ring Excell here in Sacramento about it when you're ready? They sell computers to the Society for the Blind here, and won't treat you like a dummy. In fact, I am thinking of getting them to fix me up with my next system. You remember Excel, don't you? And, of course, that's where Curt got his computer. I'm sorry my answer baffles you in some way, but I have to tell you that not all CD's are created equal. I stay away from real cheap ones, even if the deal sounds good. I'd reather pay a little more for good blank discs I can rely on year after year. It's very crucial to me. Hi Mac, I'll be perfectly honest, that tutorial was very painful to listen to. it was long-winded, and really didn't give anymore imformation, than a user could have discovered on their own. Re: Looking for a different animal.
Hi Jim, It sounds like an FM transmitter would do the job. You already have wireless access to control your computer, so you only need to move the sound from the computer to wherever you are in your dwellling. Using a transmitter, you could transmit the sound from the computer, to any FM receiver, whether it be a stereo system, portable radio, or headphone radio. With a good quality headphone radio, you would be free to move about without wires, the same as your keyboard. Re: digital USB powered stereo fm transmitter
Hi Shannon, That is a very legitimate concern. While it is possible, it may not be probable, because the frequencies being used by the transmitter, are selected to fall between the commercial broadcast frequencies. And I have found that if the transmitter is set to a frequency on the low band, most of the commercial broadcasts in that range are usually public radio, and smaller stations. However, you can lessen your concern by looking for a transmitter with a much shorter range. Who will hear your transmission, will be determined by what stations your neighbors listen to. In your particular situation, if you do acquire a transmitter, I would not share that imformation with the neighbors. Some might choose to seek out the frequency you are using. I'm not trying to put a scare into you, or talk you out of getting a transmitter, I am just looking at possible problems that can occur in this not so safe world we live in today. I would look around for a transmitter with a shorter range, taking into consideration, the size of your apartment, and the fact that when a signal has to passthru any obstructions, this will diminish the range slightly. Re: digital USB powered stereo fm transmitter
Hi Peter, I can't say for sure about the USB transmitter, as to exactly what features and functions it has. I do not have a USB transmitter, I just have an FM transmitter connected to my computer. If you have 2 soundcards, whatever sound comes thru the soundcard that the transmitter is connected to will be transmitted. It seems to me, that if you have a USB transmitter connected to the computer, any sound from the computer will be transmitted. I was merely demonstrating to Shannon the possibilities of what can be accomplished by using a transmitter. Some transmitters come pre-tuned to a specific frequency, most others however, can be tuned to one of usually 7 frequencies, on either a low, or high range. Frequency selection is usually handled thru the use of dp switches, or a small tuning screw. Some transmitters can be set to boost the output, but most of the ones sold in the US, may not have this feature due to FCC regulations. It would be best to compare several transmitters, looking for the features of particular interest to you. Re: digital USB powered stereo fm transmitter
Hi Shannon, All of the audio sources in my house, are connected to my computer The DVD player, the VCR, and the satellite receiver are all connected to my stereo amplifier. And the stereo amplifier is connected to the line-in jack on my computer soundcard. My FM transmitter is connected to the speaker jack on the same soundcard, so any sound that comes thru that soundcard, regardless of the source, is in return sent to the FM transmitter. I also have my microphone plugged into the same soundcard, so if for example, I am at my computer and the phone rings, and it is for someone else in the family, I can let them knowover one of the FM radios in the house without yelling. Sounds complicated, but really it's very simple to do. HTH, Richard Justice - Original Message - From: "shannon work" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "PC audio discussion list. Re: digital USB powered stereo fm transmitter
Hi Shannon, I forgot to mention that if you have one of those headset FM radios you can tune it to the same frequency as your transmitter, and listen in private anywhere within the range of the transmitter. I am using 2 soundcards on my computer, and have the transmitter plugged into 1 and Jaws comes across the other, so while I'm working at the computer, I can hear Jaws on the PC speakers, and have music at a lower volume coming through the transmitter to my FM radio. Then when I get up from the computer, I just take the radio with me. This configuration allows me to work at the computer and hear Jaws, while my family listens to music from my computer, without having to listen to Jaws. I can also listen to the TV anywhere in the house, whether it is a TV station, video tape, or DVD. I hope you can get a transmitter, you'll have fun. Hi Shannon, Using an FM transmitter, connected to the computer, you can listen to any sound from your computer anywhere in your home on any FM receiver. This includes your screen reader, pretty cool! Re: Where's my microphone?
Hi Doug, The microphone doesn't show up in the playback. Press the alt key for the options menu, then arrow to properties, and press enter Tab once, and you will have a dialogue for adjusting the volume. Arrow to the radio button for recording Now you will have to tab to the okay bvutton and press enter. Now as you tab down through the list you should find microphone, if you don't, go back to properties and tab to the list view, arrow to microphone, and press the spacebar Tab to okay, and when you tab thru the list, you will find microphone. You will have to tab the the checkbox and check it to use the microphone HTH, Richard Justice - Original Message - From: "doug leavens" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "PC audio discussion list. Re: recording cassettes to my computer?
Hi Cheryl, Once you have the cable connected to the cassette player, and the sound card, You will need to go to the volume control, and set your recording source to, line-in, then choose what application you are going to use for the recording. You can use GoldWave, however, I am not familiar with the recording setup. But I can tell you that GoldWave has everyfeature you will need. Something to keep in mind, if you are recording voice, you may want to set your recording format to mp3, to conserve disk space, because wav files typically take up about 10mb per minute. MP3's take up only about 1mb per minute. MEDIA PLAYERS THAT CLOSE AFTER PLAY
Hi list, I'm wondering if there are any media players, for Win98, that can be configured to close, after a song, or playlist has finished playing. If so, what are they, and where could I get one. Thanks, Richard Justice ___ PC-Audio List Help, Guidelines, Archives and more... http://www.pc-audio.org To unsubscribe from this list, send a blank email to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: Copying cassettes to computer
Hi Dave, You plug the patch cord into the, line-in, jack on the soundcard. Yes, you can do this with a VCR, but only with the audio output. on the VCR. This will require a different patch cord, with a RCA plug on one end, since the jacks on the VCR are RCA type. The patch cable may need to be, atenuated, so that the output doesn't overdrive the soundcard. Re: I need to know where to find something, please?
Hello Mary Ellen, Go into WinAmp, press control, P, for preferences, you will be in a tree view, which you can arrow thru the items. You will be looking for input, or output. Once you have an item highlighted, use your tab key to move thru the dialogues for that item. If you choose to configure something, when you come to the configure button, press spacebar to activate it. Hi Amrit, In a nutshell, an fm radio is an fm reciever, which recieves fm signals. And as the name implies, an fm transmitter, transmits fm signals. Re: Copying cassettes to computer
Hi Frank, Yes there is, you will need the following: 1. audio recording program 2. stereo patch cable, ( possibly atenuated ) I say this because sometimes the output device may over-drive the soundcard, and an atenuated patch cord usually takes care of that. 3. cassette player. All you need to do is connect the patch cable to the output of your cassette player, to the line-in, on your soundcard. You will have to set your recording source, to, line-in, this is usually done thru the volume control, under recording, and sometimes can be accessed thru whatever recording program you are using. There are the basics, if you need more detail, let us know. Be sure to let us know what operating system, recording program, and soundcard you are using. This imformation is always helpful for givbing detailed instructions. HTH, Richard Justice - Original Message - From: "Frank Deweese" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "PC audio discussion list. Re: Organizing lots of music
Hi Wayne I have over 1500 songs, and I have mine arranged by artist. I just create a folder with the artist name, and then put all selections by that artist in the corresponding folder. Since I have my folders view, set to arrange by name, the folders are in alphabetical order likewise, the files within each folder are also in the same order. For me, it's easier to find a particular song by title, than by genre. Re: putting mp3's on a dvd
Hi Shannon, Just think of a dvd disk as a cd, only with a much greater capacity. You can burn the same type of files to both disks, the dvd disk was primarily designed for video files, due to their size. Of course, where you play that disk, is determined by whether the player supports that format. Re: Removing NearoHow do I take Nero of the start-up menu? Italwaysstart up
Hello, I am not familiar with Windows ME, but it may be similar to other versions, in this respect. Try going to the startup folder, located in the start menu, under programs. Open that folder, if Nero is there, delete it. It's just a shortcut, so no problem. If Nero is not listed there, you will need to go to the run dialogue, from the start menu, and type in,msconfig, and press enter. Once in msconfig, shift, tab to place you on the general tab. >From here either control tabb, or use left or right arrow keys to place you on the start tab, and then tab once. arrow thru the list until you find Nero. and use the spacebar to uncheck the box, so Nero will not load at startup. You will probably need to use insert, numpad 8 to say line, to see if the box is checked, or unchecked. After unchecking the box, tab to the apply button, and press enter. Then tab to the okay button, and press enter, once you do this you will be prompted to re-start your computer so that the changes you made will take effect. Press enter, and wait for your computer to re-boot. If this is not correct for Windows ME, I hope someone will correct me. hth, Richard Justice - Original Message - From: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Friday, October 01, 2004 2:47 PM Subject: Re: Removing NearoHow do I take Nero of the start-up menu? Re: Kazaa Lite
Hi Jim, Part of the problem you are experiencing, are the people uploading files. I have found that alot of the people have found songs on the internet, or somewhere else, and have these songs on their computer, but don't know who the correct artist is, or what the actual title of the song is. So they give the song the title they think is right, or put the artist name to it that they think might be right. Now, to add to the mix some might go as far as to use some of this software, that will search the internet for the imformation , associated with the song that is currently playing on their computer. And the problem with that is, it seems to be maintained with the same standards you find with Kazaa. And to top things off some songs have been poorley recorded by individuals that don't know how! As to the second problem, as I remember I had to go into the tools menu, and select, "clear all downloads as interonious", or something that sounds similar. I used to have the same problems you are describing, that's why I quit using Kazaa, well, that and I demand better quality for music. I would rather go to a sight and pay for my music, that way I stand a better chance of getting what I'm looking for. Ieven tried out WalMart, on-line, the price wasn't bad, and I actually found what I was looking for. Just remember if it's free, you get what you pay for. The price doesn't just reflect the production of the music, and the media it's on, and the royalties that go to the artist, it also assures the consumer that that they are getting what they are paying for. It ends up downloading something totally different. However, if I try and download something else off of the same list of choices, it will download that same file again. Hello, I am interested in fm transmitters, and would like to know if anyone on the list has any suggestions on which brand to buy, and where to get it. Re: a few Nero questions
Hi again Susan, Iam currently using Nero 5.5, and, yes you can burn mp3's to disk to listen to on your pc. Just use the wizard, and burn it as a data disk. As far as a backup program, I use Karen's replicator. I use it to backup files and folders from various locations on my hard drives. These are all backed up to a location, which I burn to disk with Nero everyday. Amixed mode cd contains for example, some data files, and audio files. I haven't used this for some time, so I would have to check it out again, before I can tell you any more. Re: MP3 files
Peter, I went and checked on this, with internet explorer, and tried to do the same on a website. When I clicked on an mp3 file, I got the download dialogue. But, instead of selecting save, I selected open. It did sound like it was going to download , but it didn't . Instead my default player just played it. When I first tried, I did get a dialogue, asking if I wanted to play the media in internet explorer, and I chose, no, and there was a checkbox there, to remember my response. So I'll probably never see that dialogue again. Hope this helps, Richard Justice - Original Message - From: "Peter Bentley" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "PC audio discussion list.
