Re: Ripping Settings

2008-01-06 Thread Robert Hebert
Personally, I prefer the constant bit rate. Certainly vbr is preferable to
joint stereo in most cases but again, I have done many tests with a variety of
music passages and several instruments and have not been happy with the
results. So, while vbr does save a little space on your drive, disk space is so
cheap these days that for the money it is not worth the sacrifice in quality. I
am speaking of the CDEX ripper here and if there is a vbr option with other
rippers, I have no comment there. For many, I suppose ripping options boils
down to what you hear. I generally rip at 192 kbps but for some classical music
if I know I'm going to be listening to the piece frequently have begun ripping
at 224 kbps.

Yes, I'd recommend using VBR to get the best results in the smallest file
size.

Joint stereo is only really used if you are ripping at extremely low
bitrates so I would avoid using this.

 Plus or minus, please.
 Thanks very much in advance.

Re: High Quality streams.

2007-09-23 Thread Robert Hebert
well now, on my machine, windows reports the bit rate as 320 and the sound was
crisp and full--a much better sound than a 128 bit rate could provide. I have a
very fast modem here--it is a modem designed to receive tv signals so do you
have a high-speed modem--I think possibly you do. You did select the high speed
setting did you? Could it have been that the station was streaming only at 128
kbps at that point. Apparently they were experiencing some streaming issues. I
actually left the stream and came back later and insert-shift T reported 320
kbps on both occasions so it would be interesting to hear what others are
hearing in terms of a bit rate.

Is there a payed or free site on the internet where one can find high
quality streams of classical and jazz with streams higher than 128K?

I know that I can find them through Shoutcast; however, I am looking for
 a
site that hosts exclusively high quality audio streams.

 Thanks.

Re: windows media

2007-09-07 Thread Robert Hebert
Glad to hear that windows media is now fully accessible as I have been trying
to sinc music tracks to a portable media device for which the windows explorer
interface does not work so I am forced to use windows media. The only message I
here is to drag items here and as a totally blind person, the here means
nothing to me. Others have raised the same question on this list and as far as
any posts I have read, noone has an answer for this dilemma for a blind person.
Maybe though you have found a way around this issue and if so, I and no doubt
many others on this list would like to know how to perform this action using
strictly speech prompts. Thanks and sure hope someone finally has an answer for
me.

using version 11 and JFW 6.2 with no problems.
also, as a side note, if you're primarily interseted in quality and will
only playback using the comp, try ripping in WMA format. It sounds beter
than MP3, at least to me it does...

   Hi.

Windows media player has error correction so be sure to set it if you're
using this program to rip audio CD's. It will rip much more slowly when
this is enabled but you will get excellent results.

To set the error correction flag,
go to tools, options and locate the audio tab. Press enter on the
properties button for your CD/DVD drives and then check the checkboxes to
   set error correction on.

The CD transport in your computer is key to getting good results. As
mentioned, EAC will scan until it finds 2 close matches in extracted WAV
forms but that doesn't mean that it's perfect as if your CD transport
isn't
great then you'll get some very close imperfect WAV files and it'll have
just taken you longer to get there.

I've found laptops have the best CD transports as they tend to have a
raised
middle onto which you can press the CD and have it held firmly. CD
transports I've seen on desktops have been quite flimsy at times and the
disc can slide about when spinning. This is a great way to generate lots
of
jitter, particularly on the latter tracks which are on the outside of the
disc and so are therefore being rocked around a lot more than the inner
   tracks on a flimsy transport.

   Regards.

Not necessarily. CDEX doesn't have error correction and wave form
comparison, rescanning the same track two dozen times. EAC can often
salvage a scratched disc. there is much discussion on the Internet

I have 650 audio disks I plan to rip to my external drive. Since I'm going
to sell the disks want the sound to be of really good quality but I can't
afford to make duplicates in CDA format. I'd also like to be in a position
to change the format if a new one comes along that's enough better to

switched because the latest version of their program was less accessible
than Nero. therefore, if anyone has a tutorial or general configuration

I have heard that there is a windows type interface in Windows Media 11 but I

List:

With Winamp excluding book marks from the library, I am reluctant to upgrade
winamp beyond version 5.13. While it's possible to get to bookmarks through the
file menu, once a bookmark is chosen, the list disappears and view returns to
Winamp's main window.

Having developed a list of more than 400 radio stations as bookmarks, I
appreciated the library list view allowing me to go up and down the list
quickly sampling each station's offering. Perhaps someone with greater
knowledge of Winamps features in it's latest releases might suggest another way
to achieve a similar view without constantly having to go through the file menu.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Tony Swartz

Re: CDex help please

2006-10-27 Thread Robert Hebert
It looks like your output path may be missing.
While in CDEX, hit f-4 to open the configuration section.
You will then need to control tab once to get to the CDDB tab.
I believe the first item here is the path and file name where you want your
ripped tracks to be stored.
For instance, in my case, it is:
f:\my music.
The my music folder is where all my music is stored and f is the name of the
drive where the folder is located.
You likely know most of this but just trying to be thorough.
There will likely need to be other configuration settings to be made and the
keystroke f-1 provides quite a comprehensive help section--I know, it helped me
a lot in setting up CDEX.

If you still have an earlier version of CDEX, take a look at the settings in
your .ini file--at least you will then be able to determine whether or not
you have the version 1.7 configured correctly.
Alternatively, get a friend to send you their .ini file.
The directory where I store my ripped music is F.
I rip my tracks from my E drive.
I use the Freid data base for gathering my CD information.
So, everyone's configuration will be slightly different but, by looking at a
correctly configured .ini file, you will at least be able to rule out
several possible problems.
Finally, if you have an earlier version such as 1.6 that worked correctly,
you might want to try and use that version in the interim.
Another possibility is to get the paid version of Winamp. Incidentally, they
have a tremendous data base and do an excellent job ripping music for about
twenty dollars.

Re: CDex help please

2006-10-27 Thread Robert Hebert
By doing a control tab, you also get to your CD drives page.
On this page do you have the drive selected from which you are ripping?
If windows is not seeing the drive from which you are ripping, it could be
because you have not selected that drive on the drives page or tab.
If this does not work, maybe we can get together on Skype (if you have it) and
go through your settings.

Re: mp3 player that plays wma's

2006-09-19 Thread Robert Hebert
Smaller files would certainly be the appropriate solution and I have suggested
this to the Vancouver Public Library and my local Fraser Valley Library but
they say they only purchase distribution rights from Net Library and have no
input as to the format and file structure they use.
I find this difficult to believe and possibly if someone like the Canadian
Institute for the Blind and similar agencies in the U.S. took up the challenge,
well, then maybe we could get this issue resolved. Net Library is making it
easy for themselves without proper regard for its patrons--well, that is my
opinion anyway. Or, it might cost borrowing libraries more for the services if
more effort went into compiling the books in the smaller file format.
Technology is changing rapidly hence the engineering wizards might find a
solution long before the bureaucratic barons of the various library systems are
able to reach consensus.

Rob,

Thanks for the suggestion. I guess if there is no other way, I will have to
bite the bullet and listen to the low bitrate version. I wish they would
just make the much nicer sounding high bitrate version available in a series
of smaller files. I believe this is what OverDrive does and users of that
service don't have this issue. Thanks again for the advice.

With Net Library, there two options:
The first option is to download radio quality. This file is roughly one
tfifth of the CD quality file which is the second option.
So, if your file was 135 megs the other should be about 30 megs.
I had the same problem on a Iriver t 30 where the cd quality file was too
large for the unit--not in terms of its size--the T 30 is 1 gig but the unit
did not play such a large file properly--played about 2/3 of the file then
stopped. The smaller (radio quality) worked fine.

Kathy,

My local library uses net library for downloadable books and I have signed
up to use the service. The big problem I have encountered is that the books
from Net Library are given to you for download as on huge file. The last
book I downloaded was 135 megs. I am on a very high speed connection, so
that is not a problem. The problem for was with the player I purchased to
read these books. It is a Sandisk Sansa M240. Even though the player has 1
gb of memory, and can take the whole book with no problem, attempting to use
either fast forward or rewind looses your place and brings you back to the
beginning of the book. I called Sandisk about this and was told that this
behavior is due to the size of the file. It simply can't handle the
indexing for that size of a book. That was $75 down the drain
unfortunately, because that was the only reason I had purchased the player.

Can you recommend a player that will work with the huge files available from
net library? The ability to simply play the file with DRM isn't the only
thing needed for net library books, it also has to be able to allow you to
rewind or fast forward through a book without totally loosing your place.
Any suggestions much appreciated.

Hi, Londa! I work at our public library which also now has access to free
downloadable books that are in wma-drm (digital rights management) format,
so I know the search for such an mp3 player quite well. I have found two
players that are more or less accessible. one is the Ilo for about $99; you
can get it from Walmoart on-line but not in their stores. I got mine on
ebay for about $50, I think. The other you can find just about anywhere.
It's called the Disney Mix Stick, I think. It's for little kids, but it's
pretty accessible and costs about $40. I'll be happy to talk more about
them and tell you what I know about advantages and disadvantages of each if
you want to write me off-list. There is also a player, the name of which

With Net Library, there two options:
The first option is to download radio quality. This file is roughly one tfifth
of the CD quality file which is the second option.
So, if your file was 135 megs the other should be about 30 megs.

 Hi All,

I'm looking for an accessible mp3 player that also plays WMA files. Our
library system is getting downloadable audio books and wants to be able to
provide some suggestions for blind patrons. they'd also like to be able
 to
purchase players and loan them with books preloaded on them to blind

 also
not sure it will do the job. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I recently upgraded to Windows Media Player 11 and am finding the library tab
very difficult to get to.
I upgraded after purchasing a flash MP3 player which interfaces with WMP11. I
mainly use Winamp for my music needs but transferring files to my flash player
might be easier with WMP11.
At any rate, in earlier versions of Windows Media Player, it was easy to find
the library somewhere in the menu structure but not so with WMP11. I am
eventually able to get to the library but it seems to be a hit and miss path so
I must be doing something wrong.
I do have Classic menus checked and Full mode, I believe it is--control 1.
Now, this is another problem when I do control 1, the box seems to remain
checked. I am aware that this is required for speech--just wondering why it
won't come unchecked--even while in the menu structure where it says full mode
checked I am not able to uncheck this box.
Perhaps if I could chat with someone who uses this program, I could resolve
these 2 issues--if in fact they are resolvable.
I am using Jaws 7.0 and depend entirely on speech.
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Thanks, I realize the product is limited in many ways. Basically, I purchased
it to listen to music and some books while travelling. I also download music to
the T30 and play it through a stereo in another part of the house. The unit was
not expensive--about half the original price so hopefully it will serve as a

Though you will be able to use the T30 as a player, you will find it
impossible to record without needing to go in to the menus, which wrap. Not

I wouldn't have asked if there wasn't a reason I wanted it, would I?
GRIN Seriously, though, yes there's a reason. I love putting gags
together for my radio show and for friends, so the ability to create this
effect would come in handy if I needed to do a gag where a modern
recording was meant to sound old. Just part of the creative process, or at
least my feeble-minded version of the creative process.

However, within the past week or so, I can record 55 minutes maximum before

Anders, you may already are aware of a very simple solution and that is if
playing back your track using Winamp, control tab to the equalizer window and
reduce the output of your pre-amp with the tab key. Generally I keep this
setting in the mid range--between -1.4 and + 1.4 or thereabouts. However, I
have found that if there is distortion on a recording that often decreasing the
pre-amp setting to a - 7 setting or even less will help lower the distortion.
Of course, reducing distortion with a sound editor program is always the best
solution if possible.

Re: Media Player: Ripping/Burning

2006-03-28 Thread Robert Hebert
I have done a few burns using Windows Media--so far, all successfully
thankfully.
1. I rip the songs I want from a CD using CDEX. IMPORTANT: F-8 rips in .wav
format which is what you likely want for a CD. Once I have burned the CD, I
delete the .wav file as it takes up mega space on the hard drive.
2. I move these songs to a designated folder (may not be necessary but I want
to be sure of what I am burning).
3. I find my designated folder and open it with the enter key. I then select
the songs in the folder with Control-A and these will be the songs for my burn
list.
4. Press your applications key and arrow down to add to burn list.
6. Tab until you hear a burn command. Press enter here.(this is usually several
tabs along).
7. Tab again and there is another tab that says something about burning or it
might refer to the letter of the drive you are burning with. Press enter here.
I have found that sometimes the burn starts immediately and other times the
burn may not begin for 2 minutes or more. Just today it appeared that nothing
was happening so I tried to eject the CD and got a message saying that a CD
could not be ejected while Windows was burning. I pressed enter on the burn
command that said something about my E drive and eventually, the burn began.
I am not sure if there is something visually showing on screen or whether the
program is just quirky.
8. There is another box a tab or 2 along after the burn commands where you can
review your burning speed. Sorry, don't remember what it is called but it is
quite obvious it is the settings tab--in fact, that may be what it is called.
Press alt-enter on this tab to open its properties and the second tab brings
you to the combo box for burning speeds. When my last burn today failed to work
I lowered the burn speed to 32 X and waited about 3 minutes and was just about
to give up when the drive began moving and once the process finished--about
another 3 minutes, I had a perfect cd copy with all the songs, no skips and
yes, it even played on a regular CD player.
I apologize if I have left out any specifics--I usually just do this stuff till
it works and I must say that I often forget what it was that worked and what it
was that didn't!
I'm sure that with sight this stuff is a breeze but with speech it is usually
hit and guess--at least for the first few times.- Original Message -

If you can obtain an IRiver IFP799t, you can flash the unit with an UMS

 Subject: Accessible flash mp3 players

 Hello All,

I am sure this topic has been discussed before but I did not follow
the thread at that time. I am looking for an accessible flash based
mp3 player with a capacity of 512 MB or 1 GB. I know iPOD Shuffle does
not have a screen and so can be operated easily but I would like to
avoid the iTunes software for transferring the files.

Any help in this regard is greatly appreciated.

 Thanks,
 Kiran.

Re: Real Player's Message Centre

2006-03-08 Thread Robert Hebert
When installing Real Player, I believe there was a link to install the program
with accessibility software in mind and I believe it was in that section that
pop-up windows could be disabled. I went through the install once about a year
and that is what I recall of the process but the option is definitely during
the installation of the program. This version of Real Player has never intruded
itself into any application I use--once it is set up correctly, of course and
their instructions for setting it up are very clear.

Hello,

Since installing Real Player 10, I have not been able to stop the Message
Centre and other popup windows from appearing when running Real Player. Is
there any way of disabling the Message Centre and these other popups, or,
better still, getting rid of them altogether? I seem to remember that
deleting a DLL or two will do the job, but don't know which DLLs to remove.

Also, on loading Real Player, I get a popup window inviting me to set up
the Google toolbar, which I don't want to do. Does anyone know how this
can be stopped, please?

Any advice is warmly welcomed!

Cheers,

Re: sirius radio

2006-01-01 Thread Robert Hebert
Not trying to be too picky or maybe I have missed earlier comments but as you
know but maybe haven't thought about is that the direction your antenna is
positioned depends on the location of the satellite from which the Serious
transmission is received. So, on the West Coast of North America where I am, I
would likely have to have my antenna in a window facing south and possibly
south east as I Live in Vancouver Canada. If I lived in Southern California or
Northern Mexico, I would likely have to have the antenna in an east or
north-east facing window. And of course, all this is assuming that their
satellite is parked somewhere over the south central United States as I
understand is where the TV satellites are parked.
Who knows though, maybe that parking lot is full, or all the satellites have
parking tickets so they had to move or that parking lot just got too darn
crowded. I believe that geophysically there is an optimum location for the
satellites then a central location relative to population density is also
factored in.

They must have several satellites then as the arc of any one antenna's
reception ability would be limited to the point where the satellite fell below
the viewing horizon. Thanks for your info, I guess that parking lot must truly
be getting a bit crowded so just as when searching for a parking space in a
busy city sometimes the only solution is to keep rotating round the block.

Actually the Sirius satellites move across the sky in non geo-stationary
locations, lower than the geo-stationary XM satellites. This means that
an outside location where the antenna can see most of the sky is the
preferred location to mount the Sirius antenna.

Dear PC-listers,

I'm not yet sure what the category of problem is, so I'll give you the
symptoms. As a couple of days ago, my computer speakers have developed
slightly more hiss than is normal. More annoyingly, the volume of my Winamp
and WMP media has gone way down. I think my Eloquence volume is lower, too,
but it's hard to tell. Along with the overall lowering of volume has come a
slight background hiss. Anyone have any suggestions to pin this down or fix
it? I have a Creative Sound Blaster sound card.

Thanks,

Re: computer mp3's to hi fi

Stringing so many mini plugs to mini sockets together is going to cause
conductivity problems big time together with loss of sound quality to no end.
Even using gold-plated connectors, you are going to have greatly reduced sound
quality with so many together not to mention your cable quality and length.

Hi Doc.

I'm using a 1 meter quarter inch miniplug to mini-socket, though I have
strung five of these together. The volume of the sound is reduced and if I
try and turn the volume up, I get quite poor quality. If however, I burn
the tracks onto a cd and play these through my amp, there is a vast quality
of sound. Another list member said that it could be the quality of my
on-board sound card that is causing the problem. Perhaps I need a better
sound card as well as a new hi-fi; Need to start saving then I think!

Best wishes.

 Hi all.

I have a large collection of cd's on my computer and I wish to listen to
 these through my hi fi.

I have already tried the wireless path by purchasing a Veronica, but the
quality was quite poor with the signal fading slightly when I broke the
 beam
so to speak. I also tried a wire from my computer to an auxiliary input
 on
my hi-fi, but the quality suffered quite badly.

I'm thinking of upgrading my ten year old 2 speaker hi fi and thought
 that
I'd write to the list to see if there was a particular Amplifier or
 Receiver
which gave better results, perhaps with a usb or similar connection.

Best wishes and Pease at this time.

Re: Winamp equaliser

2005-12-05 Thread Robert Hebert
Alt G opens the graphical equalizer window. and this window must be open before
you can perform the following functions.
A). The letter n toggles the equalizer on and off.
B). Your equalizer consists of ten bands, generally, five per each left and
right channel.
C). The numbers 1 through 0 on the number row keys increase the output of that
particular band while the letters q through p decrease the level of that
particular band.
D) there is also a pre-amp function and the grave key (I believe increases) the
output of the pre-amp while the tab key lowers the output of the pre-amp. Too
much output will create distortion and too little output will have the same
effect as lowering your volume to zero. A setting of about plus or minus 4
generally works best for the pre-amp. A setting other than this range would
likely have specialized or more professional functionality but mid range
setting is what I use.

Hi Robert

It opens Winamp when I enter on it, but there is no sound and the title
doesn't show up also.

Perhaps it's this specific type of wma file winamp doesn't seem to want to
play.

Re: Ipod shuffle and winamp plug-in

2005-11-27 Thread Robert Hebert
Control tab to the windows library.
Tab once here and you will hear library button press spacebar.
(I'm assuming you're using Jaws here since you have not said differently).
Now, arrow down until you hear add media and press enter.
From here you need to brows to the place where you store your music files and
highlight that folder.
Press enter and the process of adding your song titles to your Winamp library
should begin. Note, the music directory itself is not transferred, simply a
listing of the titles in your music folder is added to the library so adding
media to library is not really a space issue. A few people have thought this
was the case but it is definitely not.
This process can take from a few seconds up to a half hour or more depending on
how many files you have in your music folder and the operating speed of your
system.
You can contact me privately if you like should you have any problems but the
process is really very simple--it has to be, even I was able to figure it out.

Hi. I've got this plugin, and after reading the documentation, I think I
know what I did wrong originally. When I first tried it, I tried copying
and pasting tracks but it didn't work.
I then realized that you have to actually add songs to your Winamp
 library,
which I hadn't done before, but can certainly do. The first time, it
messed up my iPod to the point I had to reformat it. Not fun for me.
So i'll give it another try and let you guys know how it works.

Chris, I believe one of the tabs right there in the my new view option is a
tab that asks you if you wish to display album information.
I think there is also another setting in general preferences under titles where
you have to check certain items to display track info and the like in your

If you have Skype, we can discuss this further privately.

Re: 0 stations in the winamp library

2005-11-21 Thread Robert Hebert
The Winamp library is there and it is visible but it is a bit trickier to
find.By default shoutcast radio has a preset number of streams set at 500The
type of connection, genre, plus all 500 stations are there, just as before. I
have not tried to increase the number of streams in this latest download. The
tree structure though isn't as intuitive as in the earlier versions. For a
while with 5.1, I believe, I also thought the library was invisible.

Hi all, I have tried writing the winamp list, and thus far, have gotten
no satisfactory response to this problem, and that is, that it seems
ever since version 5.11, or what ever version where they fixed the bug
with the winamp playlist editor, I can't get the library to search,
even though I go to media library, and shift tab to the tab control,
and locate the on line media tab, and examine the six items which are
all checked, and I even set the number of stations to 1 in the
modify preferences edit box, despite the nullsoft server cap of 1000
stations, and still, I can't get the library to search, I get a custom
control, and nothing else, until I alt tab, and back again, only to
realyze it hadn't searched for anything, and I even reinstalled version
5.112, but no go, and I even changed the number of stations to 1000,
and I even disabled kerio personal firewall, thinking that might be the
problem, but no, and so I'm frustrated as to why the media library
isn't searching for stations. I wonder if comcast is blocking a o l
ports, or something like that, though I doubt it, but I've done
everything I know to do, and still, ever since 5.11, I can't get the
library to search, and I wonder if there are any ideas people have,
this with winamp 5.112, windows 98 se, window-eyes 5.5 192 megs of ram,
and a 400 megs processor, and thanks in advance.

Re: Annoying CDex problems

2005-11-18 Thread Robert Hebert
I believe the changes in CDEX 1.6 were quite minor but I can't recall exactly
what they were.
Yes it works with Jaws 5.0.
As per scripts, again I can't say for sure that there are or not but basically
CDEX works fine with Jaws 5.0 so I would have to check the Jaws help file and
look under the programs with Jaws section.
Actually, I just now opened CDEX and brought up the Jaws configuration manager
and there were no CDEX scripts there. I am using Jaws version 7.035.
CDEX 1.6 is a betga version. If you are happy with 1.51 then I wouldn't bother
upgrading.

I haven't had any problems yet with cdex 1.51. Does 1.6 have any more
conversion from wma or m4a to mp3 or wav and would it work with Jaws 5.0?
Are there any scripts? Thank you.

About 6 months ago I experienced a problem with CDEX 1.51. The problem
seemed to be related to the data base and listing selections to be
 recorded etc.
I was fortunate to get a few knowledgeable folks racking their brains re a
 solution--none was found.
In the end, the easiest thing was to remove CDEX--add/remove--control
panel and I also removed the CDEX directory--if there was still one
remaining, I can't remember but at any rate I removed all traces of CDEX
from my system and installed the version I am currently using--1.6.
A complete reinstall took about 15 minutes and in my case fortunately
completely resolved the problem I had been having.
I wish I had simply done this in the first place.
NOTE: Do those MP3 files play using any other format such as WMA or Real
 Audio--just to name 2 possibilities?
If a reinstall doesn't work then obviously, it is time to call in the

 Hi folks,

Ok, this is really strange. I was using CDex 1.60 successfully until ... I
restarted my Windows XP Home computer. Now, each time I try and start the
program, I get the message telling me that it has found a problem, and
 needs
 to close.

I could post the entire error report here, but it seems to have an
encyclopedia of information, with exception codes and other numbers. LOL!

And, the saga continues. I thought it might be some kind of oddity with
 this
version of CDex, so I installed the last stable version, which was I think
1.51. It seemed to be working fine until I checked my MP3 files, and found
 that they were completely silent.

In both versions of CDex. I was using something called the native NT SCSI
Library, and this worked with v1.60 until it somehow broke.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what the heck is going on here?

 Thanks.

I just came across what seems to be a speech-friendly automation program. It
is called ZaraRadio. Get it at http://www.zararadio.com The program is free.
It does live assist, playlists, satellite feeds, internet streams, jingles and
the like. It uses loads of keyboard commands. One of the problems however is
that the documentation in the help file is in Spanish. When you install the
software you can get pulldown menus in English. If anyone has played with this
program I would appreciate input. This seems like an interesting accessible
package. Have at it gang.

Re: The Good Old Days (Was Mp3 players)

2005-11-14 Thread Robert Hebert
David, the time marker feature has been a very useful one for me.
When I first began using net library their WMA files would not play in Winamp
and placing a time marker using Real Audio or Windows Media Player was a rather
more complicated and much less accurate task for a totally blind user.
Therefore, I was very pleased when Winamp gave us the ability to play WMA files
and thereby, co-incidentally, the ability to use your time marker facility in
Winamp.
I thank you for providing myself and others with these scripts.

Subject: RE: The Good Old Days (Was Mp3 players)

Hi There,

The folllowing is from our Winamp scripts manual and describes the time
marker features.

The Winamp scripts include a feature that allows you to set, jump to and
remove multiple audio bookmarks on your currently playing track from any of
the
Winamp Windows. You can also find out the elapsed, remaining and time length
of the currently playing track. You can even export your time markers to
Time
Marker Set files (.tms files)and import time markers from .tms files into
your Winamp time marker file file (winamp.tmf). Note: Winamp already has a
bookmark
feature which allows you to store favourite streams so you can go back to
them later. To save confusion, the audio bookmarks are called time
Markers.

The idea of time markers is to allow you to set a time marker in a currently
playing track and then be able to come back later and have the track play
from
the point where the time marker was set. This way you can close Winamp, play
another track or even if you get caught up on the phone etc., you will know
that you won't have to start the track from the beginning again. You can
also set more than one time marker in a track.

The keystrokes are as follows and they can genrally be used from anywhere in
Winamp.
List of 7 items (contains 1 nested list)
. m: Set a Time Marker. Sets a time marker on the currently playing track.
There must be a track playing for it to work, but it will warn you that no
track
is playing if you try to invoke it when no track is playing. If a track is
playing and you activate the set time marker command, you will be presented
with a dialogue box and focused on an edit field where you can label the
time marker to be set. Simply type the desired label and press enter. If you
leave
this field blank and press Enter, the time marker will still be set but
without a label. After the time marker is set, Jaws announces the number
assigned
to the time marker and the time stamp of the position in the currently
loaded track as well as announcing the optional label you gave it. For
example,
if you gave the time marker the label chapter 3, and the positionin your
file was 2 minutes and 30 seconds, you would hear Jaws announce Time
Marker3
set at 2 minutes and 30 seconds, Chapter 3. Due to technical
considerations, the ability to label time markers is not available when
using JAWS versions
prior to Version 3.7. Note: You cannot use m to set time markers from
within dialogs such as the open file or jump to file dialogs. There, the m
key
merely types the letter m. To set a time marker, it is necessary to be in
one of the Winamp windows such as the Playlist or Equaliser, etc.
. Alt+Shift+m: Jump to Time Marker. This script does not require a file to
be playing, but it must be able to determine which file you are wanting to
play.
If the file name is listed in the Winamp title bar, the script will grab it
from there. Otherwise it will announce that there is no track ready to be
played.
If you have just opened a file in Winamp for the first time, but haven't
played it, it's name won't appear in the Winamp title bar. To fix this,
simply
play and stop the file. Stopping the file is optional; playing it will cause
its name to appear in the title bar and then the script will proceed. When
you press Alt+Shift+m, the script will display a list box containing a list
of all the time markers it has recorded for that track. Simply cursor
through
the list and press enter on the time marker you want to jump to. The script
will say nothing after this, but playing will immediately skip to the
selected
time marker. If the file is not playing, it will start playing from the
specified time marker.
. control+Shift+m: remove time marker. This script must also be able to
identify which track you are playing. It does this in the same way as the
Alt+Shift+m
script. A list box will be displayed containing a list of all the time
markers recorded for the current file. To remove one, simply move to it with
the
arrow keys and press enter. The remaining time markers will be renumbered,
etc. If you want to erase all the time markers, move to the last item in the
list Remove all time markers, and press enter. This will only delete all
time markers for the current file, not all the time markers you

Kathy, Winamp will play these WMA files for you. Of course, Winamp is not an
MP3 player as such or specifically at any rate but it will play WMA files.
It is a computer-based program. You may know of the program already but if not,
it is available from
www.winamp.com
You can purchase stand-alone WMA players and the books are supposedly able to
be downloaded, copied and played on WMA players.
I have listened to 3 or 4 books on my computer using Winamp. You can insert
time markers for convenient restarts.

Some of these books are locked and must be played by Window's media. As

function.

I don't think that these books will play on a stand-alone MP3 player.

Hi, all! I work in our local public library system in Louisville, and
recently the decision was made to put downloadable audible books on our

know what players are available, that are relativiely inexpensive and
blind-friendly, to play these things? I know that, blind friendly or no, if
you want players that save your place for you in a file, you have to buy
more expensive stuff. But any help to know which ones to recommend for us

Yes, I am able to play the copywrite protected files on my computer using
Winamp. They ask that you don't download these files to a public computer.
The files time out after 21 days but you are allowed one renewal for another 21
days.
One thing you can't do is copy the file to another format such as from WMA to
MP3 or OG vorbus etc.

I believe it is only the later versions of Winamp that have the ability to play
the WMA format.
If you have an earlier version of Winamp and it does not play your WMA files,
update to the latest version.
Of course, you can have more than one version of Winamp on your computer--just
put them each in a separate directory.
I am currently using version 5.1.

Hi Stephen.

I was not aware that there was any sound file associated to downloading.
Anyway, if you go into Control Panel then to Sounds and audio devices. Then
Control Tab to Sound Schemes. Press Tab twice and you will end on a list of
Window Sounds. If you arrow down to the one you want to change, for the
particular task that Windows is performing, , press tab to browse and you
will be taken to the location of where all sound files are kept.

Hope this is of assistance. get back if you need more assistance. Good

How to select a different sound card

Hi Dana,
Have you tried this?
From the control panel, Select sounds and audio devices,
and then go to the audio tab.
Here your soundcards should be listed.
If the one that is spoken when you open this dialogue, is not the one you
want for your playback device, then arrow thru the list until you highlight
the one you want.
Now tab thru the dialogue and make your settings changes as desired.
Now tab to the apply button, and press enter, and then the okay button and
do same.
Now here's what should happen.
All audio should come thru the soundcard you selected as the preferred
playback device.
This includes Jaws.
Now to move Jaws to the other card, you will need to edit the jfw.ini file.
After doing this, and at least unloading, and re-loading Jaws,
should force Jaws to use the specified card, and leave all other audio on
the other card.
Is this waht you are looking for?

Thanks to Gene Asner, Chris skarstad, Chris Judge, and others who have
contributed
to getting me this far. But, in the venerable traditions of my academic
training, allow me to restate the problem, as I now understand it.

I have two sound cards. I would like to direct the speech from my screen
reader and the Windows system sounds defined in control Panel\Sounds and
Audio Devices through one card, and the output of Winamp and Realplayer
through the other. The problem is that, so far as I have been able to
determine, there is no way to direct either the Windows system sounds or
Realplayer through a sound card other than the Windows system default card.
If anyone knows of any way around either of these limitations, I would VERY
MUCH
appreciate hearing about it.

Thank you, again.

Blessed Be,

Dana

Re: Configuring Real Player 10.5

2005-09-11 Thread Robert Hebert
My feeling is that you have to be at least a good intermediate Jaws user to use
Real Player with any level of competence. There are no actual scripts so it
means using the mouse (Jaws) cursor a lot.
If you enjoy tinkering, it will be lots of fun---if you get frustrated if
things don't work right away---forget it.

,Anita, Robert,

In my experience, after one has opened the library with alt-l and tabbed
once to the library button, one must press the spacebar on the library
button before one can arrow down to the remove missing media, add media to
library, or other functions.

But, in any case, if all one ultimately wishes to do with the library is to
scroll through a list of the media files already on one's computer and
select what to play from there, it is far simpler, I find, to ignore the
library, all together. Instead, from the winamp main window, press shift-l.
One is then presented with a tree view of one's hard drive. browse the
treeview till you come to the folder in which you store your media. You can
click on the folder to load the entire contents of the folder into a
playlist, or you can continue to browse your music folder till you find the
particular subfolder containing just what you want to play. If all you want
to play is a single track, not a folder full of tracks, start the whole
process with the l (rather than shift-l) command, and browse the slightly
different interface till you find the track you want to play, and click on
it.

In either of these ways, you can ignore the continually losing focus and
difficult to negotiate library, all together.

Blessed Be,

Dana

Anita, to add media to library, do the following
 1. Alt l opens the library.
Tab once to remove missing files from library.
Down arrow here and you will come to add media to library--press enter.
In this section a list of songs will likely appear and it may be the last
song you have played or a folder list of recently played songs. Just
 ignore these.
You want to be in the folder where your music is stored. In my case, that
 folder is called mp3.
This section is like a tree view so use your arrow keys until you have
highlighted your music folder then when you have found it, do a right
 arrow to open the folder.
 At this point, press enter.
If you have done everything correctly and if I haven't forgotten any
steps--all the selections in your music folder should be added to your
 library.
This does not mean that all the songs are duplicated again and that you
are using up gigabytes of disk space.
Adding your music files to library simply creats a list of your music
files that you can access from your Winamp library.
If you have your songs recorded in such a way that they are listed by
artist, album, song title and track, you will have a very nice view of all
your music from within your library.
You will be able to see a list of all the artists, albums or song titles
you have and each in a separate list.
There is a bunch more info too but you will see that for yourself.
You will also be able to cue your songs and I believe make a play list but
I for some reason have not done this yet though I keep intending to--I
really must as a little experiment.

They say the sound quality is a bit better.
Skype out especially was a bit like talking on a 2-way radio and I believe this
has improved.
I had purchased Skype out previously but these credits are now used up.
Personally, I found no real problems using Skype but my wife who makes most of
the long distance phone calls in this household hated it. Once the new beta 4
becomes a non-beta I will likely buy more credits and give Skype out another
try.
Skype out just in case you don't know gives one the ability to initiate a call
fron ones computer to someone's actual landline. Using Skype you talk using
your headset and microphone to someone on the other end using a regular
telephone. The cost is about 2 cents per minute Canadian anywhere in the world
at any time.
As Skype changes versions, the Jaws scripts are beginning to lose functionality
but the program is still quite doable.

Re: surround sound in winamp 5.1

2005-09-05 Thread Robert Hebert
Looks like Winamp is putting surround in 2 speakers--i.e. it appears to
automatically change speaker settings.
Yesterday, I noticed my speaker settings had been set to quadraphonic. I put
them back to stereo after experimenting with the latest Winamp 5.1.
Well, today, these settings had been changed again and this time they were on
5.1 surround sound.
I played some songs through 6 speakers using the surround sound setting but my
speakers are not surround sound speakers--i.e. I do not have a surround system
so still didn't notice much difference--if any--though I really wanted to!

It probably wouldn't work too well if you use 2.1 setups. Unless it's able
to use that weird technology that puts surround in two speakers, but how
realistic could that really sound. If the speakers are on your left and

Re: having trouble getting title streaming to work in winamp

2005-09-03 Thread Robert Hebert
I also had to totally remove Winamp from my system about 6 months ago.
However, before doing that, try looking at the title option in general
preferences (Control P). I believe titles is the third from the top--just
under Play Lists.
Once you find it, tab through and there are a number of items to check and
uncheck. There is also a help section at the end--the fourth fifth or sixth tab
along and that may give you some hints re your titles not being displayed while
streaming.
Also, another possibility--but less likely is in the library (alt l) when in
the section called my new view there is a checkbox there that says display
information or something similar. This box should be checked. I know, in my
case, this checkbox somehow became unchecked--I noticed a couple of weeks ago
and I have no idea how this happened--certainly, I never unchecked it.

even an actual title coming up regardless of whether the station has title
streaming enabled or not. What could be causeing this.

Subject: Portable cd/mp3 player plus am/fm tuner recommendation

I have been searching audio stors for the following item and have been
 told
so far that it is not available.
I am looking for a portable A.M./F.M. tuner with memory presets. These can
be on the unit itself or on a remote keypad.
I would also like the unit to be able to play CD's and MP3's.
I am looking for a small portable unit.
I have been able to find the CD/MP3 unit and I have found the portable
 AM/FM
tuner with between 20 and 40 presets but these have been separate units
 but
I can't imagine that someone does not make a unit that combines all
 features.
I have found a Sony DNS 320 or 420 that does just about everything but it
 is
a diskman type unit which means it does not have its own speakers--just
 head
phones. If this unit had speakers it would be perfect.
Can anyone recommend the type of unit I am looking for or or has it not
 been
 built yet?
Thanks to any and all who have a solution for me!
