i am using version 1.3.4 which is listed as a beta version and has been
this way for several years.

Re: iPhone 7 disappointing audio...?

2016-10-19 Thread pete gurney
hi,

something worth looking at for those that want to improve their sound on
apple devices using the lightning socket is a new device that will come
out soon.
it's called AMP.I.AM
it was a campaign on indiegogo but they didn't need to finish the
campaign as apple saw it and liked it so much they pre ordered 25000 of
them.
it's only a few millimetres longer than the apple lightning headphone
adapter but this has it's own amp and dac built in and has both
lightning and 3.5 headphone outputs.
it also doesn't need any power sorce other than the apple device and
apple have asked them to change the specs slightly so that it will
include a second lightning socket so you can charge your apple device at
the same time as listening through your headphones.

here is the url to read more.

hi jeff,

yes it does.
here are the different bluetooth profiles it supports taken from the
manual.

Supported Bluetooth profiles*:
A2DP (Wireless Stereo Bluetooth), AVRCP (Bluetooth Remote Control), HFP
(Handsfree profile)
Supported Codec: SBC, aptX, AAC

pete.

This Creative speaker sounds quite good. Thanks
for the details. One question is,
Does it have A2DP so VoiceOver is also heard
through the speaker when using an iDevice?
Thanks,

hi mary,

i've got two new bluetooth speakers a week ago both of which are fine one
is
outstanding but costs more and the other has three diferent versions each
one stepping up in size.
both of these have built in speech that tells you when it's pairing and
when
connected and the cheaper one even speaks what battery power is left.
there both made by creative, the dearer one:
sound blaster roar
has outstanding sound with 30 watts output from a unit that is roughly the
size of an A5 sheet of paper and 2 inches tall.
it has bass boost, the ability to expand the sound field, has a micro sd
card slot it's own built in music player and works as a speaker phone.
if you have an sd card inserted you can either play music that is on it,
press a record button to record memos or lectures and such like or if you
are on a phone call via bluetooth to the speaker a press of the record
button will even record your conversation which you can play back using
the
buttons on the speaker.
it also has up to date codex built in so it can play uncompressed audio
via
bluetooth or via the 3.5 aux in socket, it even has an alarm switch that
when activated a press of a button makes it work as a siron.
it works from both the mains or from the built in battery.
in UK pounds it cost £129 but i don't think it's much more in
dollars
in the states.
the second is the:
creative muvo mini.
which i think is also known as the muvo 10.
this is about 7 inches long and 2 inches tall and deep.
it has a rubber coating and is suitable for use in bathrooms, on the beech
and anywhere outdoors even in light rain or where it will get splashed.
it's not as powerful as the roar but still has reasonable sound and works
as
a speaker phone.
this one cost £50 UK pounds.creative do another couple of models of the
muvo
with the rubber coating with each one being bigger and more powerful and i
think they are called the muvo 20 and muvo 30.

Re: Sound bars

2014-05-10 Thread pete gurney
hello all,

i'm a bit late coming in on this but if you get a really good sound bar it
can be as good as a wired surround sound system.
i have both a sound bar in the front room and a wired surround system in
the dining room
they are both made by yamaha and the soundbar sounds every bit as good as
the wired system including you hearing everything around and behind you.
the soundbar i have is model yamaha ysp40d.
admittedly the normal price of this was £1500 or roughly $2500 but i got it
when it was being replaced with a newer model so got it for £500 roughly
$830 but it is a very impressive bit of equipment.
it is about 40 inches long and has 42 individual speakers in it which fire
off the sound in all different directions.
when you set it up you plug a microphone in to it on a long lead and place
it level with the centre of the tv screen and 6 to 8 feet away then tell it
to auto setup and go out of the room and close the door.
from outside it sounds like something from the movie close encounter of the
third kind as you can hear all these odd sounds being bounced off of every
surface in the room.
when it's finished it has programmed all the speakers to give off their
sound fractions of seconds apart bouncing the sound off of the walls,
ceiling, and furniture to give you a full surround effect.
when it sets itself up it can even tell weather you have soft furnishing
and carpets in the room and takes this into account.
it also has a mass of different connections which means you could
have 10 or 12 pieces of equipment all connected to it at the same time.
i prefer this sound bar to the wired systems as obviously it's neater and
you don't need to run wires everywhere, but i do think you need to get a
sound bar that has this type of auto setup with multi speakers in it.
i've seen several over the last 5 years since i got mine that have this
capability but not with as many speakers but they have also been at a much
more reasonable price.

re: wireless headsets

2011-07-27 Thread PETE gurney
hello all,

having followed the descussion about wireless headsets recently, i want to
recommend another make.
i recently bought the:
Trust Freewave Wireless Headset
which works off of 2 AAA batteries and comes with a USB transmitter that is
the same size as a memory stick plus a USB extention cable.
they also make a pro version of this headset which didn't cost a lot more.
my set cost £20 including shipping which i think would be around $30 and
the pro set was about 50 percent more.
i can't tell you how pleased i am with these, they just work there's no
setting up to do just plug the dongle in, turn the headset on and the sound
is automatically transfered to the headset.
the first thing i did was to run the speech recognition wizard in windows
vista go through the basic training and then dictated an email in my email
program and after 6 sentances it had only made one mistake which supprised
me.
i then tried them with skype and after telling skype to use the microphone
in this headset as it's default microphone the sound quality for both
listening and speaking was of very good quality.
but perhaps the best thing about them came to light after i updated my hd
sound card drivers this monday, as after finishing the update and rebooting
the computer i had no sound coming out of my speakers and as i use the sapi
daniel voice obviously i had no speech.
i can't see the screen and i was at home by myself at the time and thought
i would have to wait a few hours until there was someone to look at the
screen for me.
i then thought of this headset and plugged it in in the hope it might work
and sure enough it did and i had speech again, when i checked in the
computers sound settings the new drivers had been named hd audio2 and my
second sound card had been set as the default audio driver.
they were worth buying just for this alone to know that when you get loss
of speech you can plug them in and have a good chance of getting speech
back.
since i installed the new sound drivers and set them as the default i
haven't had any loss of speech with window-eyes, but it will be interesting
to see when window-eyes stops speaking if plugging these in will give me
the speech back.

2007-11-20 Thread pete gurney
hello jason,

yes we both have rockbox installed on a sandisk mp3 player.
i have the c240 and my wife has the c250.
you shouldn't have any trouble installing rockbox so long as you set the
USB mode to msc first.
i've been using rockbox for about six years now and also have it installed
on an archos and iriver mp3 player and have never had any problems with it.
i would make sure you download the rockbox and voice file from the daily
build page of the rockbox website as these will be the versions with the
most features.
and they can have quite big differences in them from day to day.
for example when i first installed the rockbox version for the sandisk
about six weeks ago i found that although the main mp3 player was working
and speaking ok it wouldn't recognise a micro SD card when i put it in the
expansion slot.
at first i thought it was a problem with my player but decided to wait a
while and then update the rockbox files.
so about 3 weeks ago i updated to the latest daily build of the rockbox
files and found that that not only had that problem been solved so my card
is recognised everytime i slot it in but there were a lot of extra speaking
features for the main machine that had been added.

hello all,

there is more than one solution to the problem of charging your mp3 usb
players.
i bought a mp3 and usb charger a while ago.
this is a small device that looks just like a standard mains plug and has a
usb socket on the face, all you do is plug it into the wall socket and plug
any usb powered device into it to either run it off the mains or to charge
it.
i only paid 5.99 UK pounds for it about12 US dollars.
the place i got mine from doesn't have this particular model any more but
they do have an alternative one that has some extras.
mine was for UK use only, but the one they have now is a travel version
which comes with adapters allowing you to use it in the UK, USA, Europe or
Australia.
this model costs 9.99 UK pounds about 21 US dollars

hello anders,

a device which will do what you want to do was shown on QVC UK at the
weekend.
but instead of being just for cassette decks, it connects to your pc by USB
and you can connect whatever you want to the other end including record
decks, cassette decks, tv, radio, dvd and vcr.
it comes with software that automatically recognises different tracks on
lps or gaps between songs on a cassette.
plus it can automatically remove hiss, crackles and pops for you.
it can save the audio in several formats.

the url for qvc uk is:

if you enter the number 553108 in their search box the details and order
page will come up for this item, and below the description on this page is
a watch video link that will show you an audio and video demonstration of

hello missy,

sorry i'm so late in replying to your message but i haven't been around
much this week.
unfortunately i gave nebula a call today and they told me that although
their audio description works in several countries around the world it
doesn't work with the broadcasts in the United States .
this is because the USA has decided to use a different system for their
audio description rather than the one the other countries are using.

pete.

Hi! I just went to the web site for nebula electronics, and liked what I
was able to read there, but before I even think about buying anything, I
have some questions. Would the pci card version of their tv tuner work in
the stats, and if so, does it work well with Windows Media center? I'm very

interested in getting it for my new computer if it supports audio
description features.
Missy

hello jim,

yes there are many different versions available.
there are internal pci models plus USB models that are available like a
memory stick or as a box with a USB lead coming off of it.
but probably the best ones on the market are the nebula models.
they all support audio description transmissions for both listening to live
and for recording.
this obviously depends on where you are in the world, but they do work in
several countries and they are listed on their website:
www.nebula-electronics.co.uk
they also are aware of the needs of visually impaired people and make their
software as accessible as possible.
they are also about to launch a new home media centre that has 3 digital

i also believe that their adapters are the only ones on the market that are
able to receive high definition signals.

Re: Another XP Media Center Question.

2007-03-25 Thread pete gurney
hello jim,

yes there are many different versions available.
there are internal pci models plus USB models that are available like a
memory stick or as a box with a USB lead coming off of it.
but probably the best ones on the market are the nebula models.
they all support audio description transmissions for both listening to live
and for recording.
this obviously depends on where you are in the world, but they do work in
several countries and they are listed on their website:
www.nebula-electronics.co.uk
they also are aware of the needs of visually impaired people and make their
software as accessible as possible.
they are also about to launch a new home media centre that has 3 digital
tuners plus a 500 gb hard drive within it that will work by connecting
direct to a tv, via a wired network, or by wi-fi to your pc's or to tv's
around the home if you connect one of their thin client receivers to the
tv.
i also believe that their adapters are the only ones on the market that are
able to receive high definition signals.

the other major manufacturer of digital pc adapters is hauppauge and their
international site is:
www.hauppauge.com
but their models don't support audio description.

Is it possible to acquire a tv tuner card that will record digital TV?

2005-12-26 Thread PETE gurney
hello doc,

it was that a friends daughter was having trouble converting mp3 to cda and
writing the cd at the same time due to buffer under run errors.
she has an old slow external cd writer and probably not a very powerful

burning processes.

I must have missed the original thread. Why are you not going right to the

 hello gerry,

thanks for that, i had a look and found how to do it.
it's a longer method but at least it works.
encase anyone else has the need for such a work around here are the
steps.

1 open nero and choose audio cd and click new
2 select the mp3 files you want to burn and add them to what is to be
burnt
3 go to the recorder menu and select choose recorder, choose image
recorder
 [virtual recorder] and click ok.
4 choose write cd from the file menu the write screen will appear but
when
you click on write a window will pop up asking you for a file name i just
tried it with some westlife tracks so i called it westlife leave the
image
type on it's default and click on ok or save i've forgotten which it was.
5 when the conversion has finished click on ok and then on discard on the
 window that pops up.
6 go back to the recorder menu, click on choose recorder and set it back
to
 your actual burner.
7 choose close from the file menu [not exit]
8 choose burn image from the file menu, when the window pops up asking
for
the image name select the name of the image you just created, put your
blank cd in the drive and click on the appropriate button to start the
 burn.
9 finally perminently delete the image file as it will be taking up the
same amount of space on the hard drive as it does on a cd.

i was checking for a friends daughter who has an external cd writer which
is rather slow and doesn't have buffer protection therefor when she tries

error part way through.
so it's probably a case of her having to get a better and faster cd writer.

Hi Pete,
Can't do it.
The CDA extension is just a pointer on the disk to the file.
.CDA files are not playable by audio applications, as you would .wav,
or.mp3.
So why would you want to convert files before you burn them anywaywhen it
is
part of the audio creation process?

Re: Microsoft Windows XP Media Centre Edition.

hello jim,

if you take a look at:
www.blindcooltech.com
there is an mp3 audio demonstration of media centre being used with speech,
and he is able to use the media centre software with windows narrator
successfully including useing the tv program EPG and schedule recordings.
also the shortly to be released windoweyes v5.5 works with media centre
2005.

pete.

OK... I've had the Sony Vaio Media Center computer for about a year now.
Every thing is accessible to Jaws except the Media Center program it self.
However, there are other enhancements to XP that are. For instance, when
dealing with audio files there is a WMA to MP3/WAV converter built right
in.

The TV tuner card is accessible if you don't mind using the Jaws curser to
control it.

All in all it is a great investment for me. But of course my wife is fully
sighted and can user the Media Center program. But even so, I recommend it
for anyone who is into Audio/Video. In my opinion the extra cost is well
worth it.

Below an article from Sydny Morning Herald. I was wondering if this
Microsoft Windows XP Media Centre that the article talks about, and the
software to record and tune to cable is accessible.

 Let me entertain you
 By Valens Quinn
 October 22, 2005

There's a whole world of digital entertainment trying to get into your
living room. By connecting a media centre PC to your TV and stereo, you
 could be
just that little bit closer to living the Jetsons' lifestyle, with all
sorts of digital content at your fingertips.

Imagine setting up automatic recording of an entire season of 24 or
Desperate Housewives with the press of a button, ready to watch once the
 kids are asleep.

You could amaze your friends with a big-screen photo slideshow of a
recent
hiking trip to the Himalayas, complete with Wagner's Flight of the
 Valkyries
trumpeting in the background. It would beat passing around a stack of 8cm

 x
10cm prints that just don't do the scenery justice.

After a long day at work, you could select a movie from the latest
selection of blockbusters, pay electronically and the movie starts
playing
 on your TV
a few minutes later - all without pulling on your uggies and heading to
 the
video shop. You wouldn't have to remember to return the movie when you're
 finished,
 either.

Music lovers can have their complete collections on tap, ready to play
 with
a few clicks of the remote. No more hunting for that special song or
 stacking
up CD cases. You can create customised music compilations and save them
 for
parties, doing housework, or just dancing with the kids.

To get started you don't need anything more than a specially equipped PC
-
called a media centre - and some easy-to-use software. Think of a media
 centre
PC as a home central storage vault for holding and sharing anything
digital, including photos, home videos and music.

A media centre can also tune in TV signals and play CDs and DVDs. It can
pretty much do the job of a VCR, DVD player, CD player, digital set-top
 box
 and
surround-sound decoder. Then you get the added bonus that it can function
like a normal PC too, so you can run your favourite programs, browse the
 internet
and play games from your living room TV set.

You could also put a media centre in your study and connect it to a
conventional computer monitor and speakers, but this type of PC is much
 happier in your
living room, where it can connect to a big-screen TV and stereo. The
benefit is better sights and sounds, and the family doesn't have to crowd
 around a
PC monitor to see your latest photos or watch a video.

Media centre PCs come in different shapes and sizes, depending on the
 model
you buy. Some are designed to match your existing AV equipment, with
sleek
 gold
or silver metallic front panels, while others look like normal desktop
tower PCs. Popular models include HP's Media Centre m7088a, Optima's
 WorkPro S7
Media Centre PC, Toshiba's portable Qosmio G20, the Acer Aspire T630MCE
or
the Altechs Maestro Pro. Prices vary from $2400 for the HP without
monitor
 to
 $3999 for the Acer.

Whether you tuck it out of the way or position it front and centre, keep
 in
mind that your box will need to be positioned close to your TV and stereo
 so
the cables reach. Generally, media centres use the common S-Video and
composite connections for conventional TVs, or a DVI interface for
 connecting to
plasma and LCD types. For audio, you can run signals into your stereo or
surround-sound amp, or plug in a set of PC speakers. Depending on what
you
 choose,
 you'll need a mini-jack-to-RCA or a digital-audio adaptor cable.

Of course, to get started you first need a media centre PC. These share
most of the same innards as a regular computer, but need a special
version
 of Microsoft

stereo bluetooth headset

2005-04-18 Thread PETE gurney
hello all,

sorry but i can't remember who posted the original question about the
availability of stereo bluetooth headsets, but i came across the following
this morning whilst looking for something else.

Toshiba has unveiled a pair of wireless headphones that hook up to a host
PC across
a Bluetooth 1.2 link.
Designed for the company's Qosmio home entertainment-oriented laptop range,
the 90g
(3.2oz) 'over-the-ear and round-the-back-of-your-head' 'phones will also
work with
any notebook or desktop that sports a Bluetooth 1.2 adaptor, such as the
one Toshiba
sells.
The wireless link gives smooth stereo playback at up to 30ft, the company
claimed.
The 'phones will pair with only one device at a time, though Toshiba said
they can
be re-connected to another device at the push of both volume buttons. That
suggests
the 'phones can store the details of multiple devices, much as today's
Bluetooth
mobile phone headsets can, though Toshiba didn't say how many devices the
'phones
will remember.
The right-hand speaker unit also features volume controls, and track-skip
buttons.
There's room in there for a battery too, one that's large enough to provide
up to
eight hours' play time.
Interestingly, the Toshiba 'phones appear to be virtually identical to the
set HP
announced in November 2004 as a wireless add-on for its multimedia iPaq
PDAs. Toshiba's
Wireless Stereo Headphones go on sale on 9 February in the US for $100. The
company's
Bluetooth 1.2 adaptor costs $50. ®

Hello Peter, so this is the reason why I cannot record this particular CD
album,so just one more question is there such a thing as a bigger CDR?
Other than that I don't know any other way around what I'm trying to do.

hello andrew,

don't forget that the burning process can use upto 25 mb of the disc space
in creating the opening and closing sectors plus the toc.
on an 80 minute cd this means you could loose 2 and a half minutes of
recording time.

Hello Doc, Thank you for telling me how to do the time on the CD album I am
trying to record on to a CDR, I've just check the time and it is 77,39.
Surely this will fit on the CDR 80 minute? The last time I tried to record
this album the disk was on ce again rejected and I got an error message
saying the disk parameters is incorrect, do you know what is saying to me
by giving me this error report.

When you are in the main screen while building your compilation. Go to
the
bottom of the screen with your jaws cursor then arrow up. You should hear

Hello Kenneth, Many thanks for this, now when you say look in the
bottom
right corner is this when I'm in the creative screen or before I get in
there? The disk I'm using are eighty minute and I've tried so far four

an
error with a number but since that I've not had the number come up again.
Can you get larger CD's do you know please. By the way I'm using Jaws

Hi Andrew, the program will handle all sizes of disks. Look in the
lower
right corner and arrow up and you will find out how large your project
is, it will Tel you if you have exceeded your disk space.
If your blind look out for the clear plastic disks that are always in
the
  stack of disks.
